Precisely what we DIDN’T need from WB in the wake of BvS: overreaction and misplaced compensation for the tone of that film, by reshooting an already darkly funny, but generally urgent, film like Suicide Squad. GREAT.

Even though I liked the Lego Movie, I wasn’t generally thrilled with the prospects of a Batman Lego movie. I figured I’d see it with the kids, but more important things had my attention. However. HOWEVER. The trailer looks great. I love it. MY PARENTS ARE DEAAAAAAD! Callbacks to all the films was fun too.

Preacher is looking good. I’m stoked. First, Daredevil S02 makes BvS look bad… and now Preacher is going to own. I love love LOVE these comic adaptations being allowed to breathe over the duration of a series order.

Kingsman: Golden Circle. That’s the name. Kind of weak. However, traveling to the US to meet the american version of the Kingsman, which is apparently batshit crazy, almost as bad as the domestic villain, that all sounds pretty interesting. Casting, too.

Hans Zimmer claims to be retiring from superhero film scoring… what a strange (and saddening) statement. My sense is that he’s spent a metric ton of time on this, especially on Man of Steel and BvS where he collaborated… and then the films are panned enough that it feels like a slap. His work on the Nolanverse is legendary (and not just my viewpoint; they are widely accepted as part of what established the tone of the film) but look, I wasn’t even a superfan of these last two super scores. His work on Inception was awesome, and his Interstellar is his BEST WORK. So, if less ‘superhero films’ means more Interstellar scores, I’m game. But not more Kung Fu Panda scores. It’s always linked to the type of project, the director’s vision, and the tone. Just like the Batman stuff, Interstellar was Zimmer and Nolan in sync.

Ep 008 of Robot-Kraken is now live!

robotkraken_logo350

Ep 008 of Robot-Kraken is now live!

In Episode eight, Thom and Kris discuss Kris’ recent marathon of the Marvel movies. In this episode, we talk about the first three – IRON MAN, THE INCREDIBLE HULK and IRON MAN 2. We also talk about the new trailer for Civil War and SPIDERMAN.

Thom also abuses himself when he swears. This is a thing that happened.

ROBOT KRAKEN is a semi regular podcast by two indie artists, Kristopher McClanahan of Deeply Dapper and Thom Chiaramonte of the Third Rail Design Lab. We get together and talk about comics, movies, working the table at comic cons, life in this nerdy wonderland, and whatever mumblings from the deep we come across. You can find out more about us, contact us or follow along our journey at robot-kraken.com

Spider-Man-ISH and other things 21 Mar 2016

Image
On Robot-Kraken last time, I mentioned I had a shot of the full Spidey costume from Civil War… well, it turns out, on closer inspection, and by closer inspection, I mean sourcing the photo I had and backing it into the origin post, it was fan-art. Still, not too shabby, and certainly not an offensive design to me. I quite like it.

In other news…

Image
1. I’ll show YOU a Hard-Water Object: Amber Heard is apparently confirmed for Mera, Queen of Atlantis, in the upcoming Aquaman film. From what I read, and being a Marvel Zombie I had to research her, she’s like Aquaman but can use water-based telekinesis, or something. Isn’t that what Aqualad can do? I dunno. Anyway, Amber Heard. Presumably in some sort of bikini.

:::

Image
2. What Could Go Wrong: Netflix won a protracted bidding war for Will Smith’s Bright, a fantasy film that is to be written by Max Landis and directed by David Ayers, snatching it away from Warner Brothers. This is an interesting thing: Netflix gobbled up a mainstream tentpole action movie with the star and director of Suicide Squad and the writer of savvy genre material like Chronicle. They will be spending easily over $100M before this is done, and that’s excluding marketing. NETFLIX.
http://www.theverge.com/2016/3/19/11269 … -finalized

On the other hand:
“In the film, Smith will play a (human) police officer who joins up with an orc played by Edgerton to find a magic wand that could do some damage in the wrong hands. In the world of the film, humans live alongside fantastical beings (like orcs and fairies). Naturally, the police have a unit committed to solving supernatural crime.”

god damn iot I hate Shadowrun.

Meanwhile, spoiler detail about Killer Croc’s powers in SS…

4. Put that Sizzlechest Away: In this bit for Kimmel, Cavill sat around Times Square under a Batman V Superman sign, in a Supes t-shirt, and went unrecognized. Look, he was recognized. He was undressed and sexually savaged by men and women that saw him. This is just New York. They didn’t have time or interest in letting him know about it, that’s all. It’s like how that limber asian dancer was with me in college. WE KNOW WHAT SHE WAS THINKING.

Last item: I’m about half way through Daredevil S02, and Dapper is at least three behind me. We’ve already been getting spoilery comments regarding the podcast. Spare my sensitive eyes and ears, and give me the week to finish the season up, then we can jaw about it…

4. Well That Would Have Been a Joke: Had, you know, it been just one more thing crammed into this film. 5. Mquarrieness Sells: I LOVE the fact that the new films are drawing, so to speak, heavily from McQuarrie’s old concept art. It’s an excellent way to tie them together and feel part of a cohesive universe using similar design language, and it’s a nice nerd out element for production art fans.

Pliable Upskirts for Science: Lung and I were talking offline about how good Square Enix’s stuff is, and I was commenting on how the pliable material used to simulate fabrics and soft goods makes for increased poseability, such as dramatic superhero landings, and WW’s fighter crouch. 7. Insert Gravitas: Justin Lin’s ST may or may not be struggling, and they just added Shohreh Aghdashloo as a Federation bigwig. Now, late in the game major casting elements sound as fishy as hydrants in Nova Scotia, but it still could be a welcome course correction that will improve the production. We just don’t KNOW. Back in the day, prior to interweb spoilers and production details, we never knew about the behind the scenes drama unless discussed publicly later… easy to read too much into things today, and the spoilers and BTS reporting can sink an otherwise potentially good film.
