Welp… Danny Rand returning to civilization after his time in Kun Lun is apparently channeling that hacky-sack bro that made you lose your appetite for putting his shoeless feet up at Woodstock’s Pizza in college.

The Hasbro collective universe film concept has gathered quite a writer’s room.
Brian K. Vaughan (Lost, Y: The Last Man, too many awesome things to list here), Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Chabon (Spider-Man 2, Wonder Boys), and Jeff Pinkner (Lost, The Amazing Spider-Man 2) are probably the most recognizable. Geneva Robertson (one of the writers of the new Tomb Raider) is on board, as are Nicole Riegel (Dogfight) and Lindsey Beer (Kingkiller Chronicle). The group also includes a ton of Marvel Studios and Marvel TV veterans: Nicole Perlman (Captain Marvel), Cheo Coker (Luke Cage showrunner), Joe Robert Cole (Black Panther), and John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the pair who wrote the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming.

That said, a similar group was collected to kick-start the Transformers franchise…

Barbary Coast is a show in development about the nitty-gritty early years of the gold and possibly silver rush, which right out of the gate makes me want to watch it. Kurt Russell and Kate Hudson are attached, which is also pleasing… the hitch? Mel Gibson is writing and directing. I’m torn. I keep wanting to ban him. But then my realist side steps in and notes that MANY people in Hollywood are bigots, ageists, sexists, douches… I dunno.

Surprising precisely no one, Inhumans has been pushed back. Between the additions of Spider-Man: Homecoming and Ant-Man and Wasp, the slate was crowded… add Indiana Jones 5… and the fact that Permutter’s TV division is hanging the entire S03 SHIELD hat on Inhumans… it seems like a wise move, to me.

Finally, points for effort on this one, and also, I will never stop talking about Daredevil… this set of billboards generated battle damage as people hashtagged a particular character. That’s a surreal attempt to get the millenials motivated. Interesting though!

ONE PUNCH and other things 21 April 2016

Image
The Bourne trailer that was teased last night is out today, and it’s 100% awesome of course. My favorites are always the quick little actions he does. In this trailer, it’s the snatch of the Molotov Cocktail. My blurry screencap attempts to show this. Anyway, yeeee.
I love Alicia Vikander and this time is no exception… though I didn’t see Cassell anywhere… or I missed it?

In other news…

Image
I really like Denzel’s character hopping behind his horse for cover… poor horse…
That music though, so much right and so much wrong. This is the problem with early trailers or teasers, where they just hijack other music. The woup-woup-woup-wouuuuup wind-down sound is so out of place. Then again, the second half has a great musical selection.
Anyway, I knew I’d want to see this, being a westersn and given the cast and director. I just can’t shake the disappointment that once again it’s another remake. Of a remake.

Meanwhile, in a strange inversion, Ken Watanabe will star in a Japanese remake of Unforgiven.

“Allright, Jorge, rookie mistake…”
I wasn’t planning on watching this on Netflix, as I’m not generally AS’ target market. But I read it’s pretty Grosse Point-esque, and from the trailer, I saw a few things of interest, so what the hell.

When I first saw these photos, I was mostly unnerved by that scalp he’s holding in one of them (SAVAGE EMPIRISTS!) but as this pointed out, also of note is that the cockpit Harry is sitting in is an A-Wing. Cool! Love that ship. And all other ships.

This isn’t going to sit well with all the rabid haters of the non-asian lead in the film, but Sam Yoshiba, director of the international business division at Kodnasha, has indicated being impressed after visiting the NZ production lots (well, so did Gibson after seeing Mnemonic sets) and the company has clarified they are in favor of the casting (because cashmoney) so…

And in the best news I’ve heard in YEARS, there are whispers and hints and such that Goldblum will join a supers film in the near future. I don’t give a SHIT what it is. Have him play Stilt Man. WHATEVER. Take my money.

Apparently they are still retooling the Terminator franchise, but without Emilia Clarke. Let’s be fair, here: she wasn’t the problem with Gensys… and Genesys itself on the whole was a much better movie than people like to make it out to be, I think. We podcasted about that.

Here’s a great piece on one of my childhood favorite films: Boorman’s Excalibur. Lots I didn’t know. Great note about the fallout from Camelot as a savage wasteland is a cipher for post-Christianity civilization’s loss of the connection to nature, ie. pagan ritual. Interesting!

Watch the Titanic sink in real time? Who would want to watch that? Actually, it is extremely sobering and frankly, haunting. I skipped ahead to each of the caption moments but still, all in I probably committed about 45 minutes to it over 2 days. I was struck by how SLOW it is. 2.5 hours from strike to sink, and lots of time verrrry slowly failing. Watching the various systems collapse, for example, or how the power reductions meant narrower and narrower telegraph range… the blunders with the lifeboats are well documented and tragic to watch unfold in realtime, and when it sinks, knowing that 1,500 people are still aboard is especially haunting. I was struck by how un-Hollywood it is for the majority of the piece. Slowing, stopping, resuming, stopping, hanging out, gradually engaging in the evacuation… not the sturm and drang of the film… though the last 45 seconds or so are very similar. It’s also creepy that there are no humans rendered in the video. That, along with the calm waters and huge starry sky… make for a chilling viewing. Recommended!

DONT LOOK AT THIS CHICKEN and other things – 18 April 2016

Image

In other news,

Image
The controversy over the latest jab at the GitS film seems suspicious to me. The ‘multiple independent insider sources’ claim Lola FX was asked to ‘Asiafy’ Scarlett Johansson as a test, following the negative PR over her casting as Motoko… though immediately I wondered why any studio would suggest that approach in the modern era, let alone as a response to accusations of whitewashing. Then the report was violently disputed, several versions. It’s believable, I guess, that they would be that stupid, and it’s also believable, surely, that they would deny deny deny. But to me this raises larger questions, especially in a year that saw public outrage over several whitewashing casting choices the previous summer: does it matter? It cracks open the whole issue, not only of casting ethnically-specific characters as other ethnicities, but also whether their ethnicity is part of their character at all. I totally understand why the Asian international community would find suspect a film about Japanese characters in Japan casting largely Asian actors but changing the main lead to a non-Asian character and actor. However, is this not about box office draw and star-linkage to a film to make it a reality, financially, above all else? It reminds me of the whole thing about changing black characters white (conservative, cowardly) or white characters black (brave or offensive, depending on who is commenting) when it comes to super hero roles. Personally, I love when interesting actors are cast in these roles, regardless of what the source material called for, if it defined the ethnicity at all. Yet, I’m of course the white male box office majority viewer, who isn’t negatively impacted as an individual, culture, or ethnicity as a whole, by these decisions. I see why people are pissed. I just don’t think they are acknowledging the reality of financing movies and how little the executives and fund managers care about cultural sensitivity, alignment to source material, or anything else. EVERY character would look like a turnip if turnips were the biggest draw internationally. And frankly, some think Scarlett Johansson LOOKS like a turnip.

Personally, I’d have loved to see a truly all Asian cast for this film. So many great actors out there that would fit the bill, not only by ethnicity and look, by talent as well. I’m just not surprised that Hollywood didn’t commit to that concept.
http://screencrush.com/ghost-in-the-she … asson-vfx/

Plus, as Lung said to me offline, the OTHER takeaway from this article that was unnerving was the accusation that VFX were used to thin and curve out actors… much like photo retouching. I knew about the latter, but not about the former. Nauseating.

Meanwhile, this sampling of Japanese viewers commenting on the photo was enlightening. My favorite:

Inhumans is being bumped indefinitely. Between bringing Spider-Man into the fold and the ongoing war with Permutter’s TV division, I’m not terribly shocked. However, SHIELD has firmly established Inhumans as the MCU/TV version of mutants, and did a good job of it, so there’s no reason this can’t jump to film, if they ever just address the power conflict between Permutter (not my favorite) and Fiege.
