Trick or Treat Smell my SITH LORD EWOK GAAAAAH – 161031

Image
GAHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Meanwhile:

Image
ITEM: The LIFE trailer looks good, though very derivative. Fortunately, I like all the things it’s derivative OF, ending with a preposition.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Fonzo is an odd duck of a project. About Capone being senile… and filmed by maligned director Josh Trank? Still, Tom Hardy, so it HAS to be good.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Miller says all the right things to me. It’s what I want from a Batman film too. Frankly, I want BatmanL Year One (comic version) and I’d be stoked with that. Not so much those Aronofsky plans…
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Defenders, shocking and awing everyone, will include Karen Page and Misty Knight. And by everyone, I mean no one.
via

:::

Image
Saw this at Toys R Us. Very expensive. However, it DOES include a ship and 4 other figures absolutely free, so…

Image
Saw this also. At $20 or whatever, I wasn’t compelled. But nice piece.

:::

Image
ITEM: Speaking of a nice piece, here’s my latest Birthday Bugga, done for my friend Lorraine.

A for Effort, C for no skull cap.

Not a bad concept… poorly sourced so far… but it could take off…

Scared Tauntaun or not, WANNNNNNNT! It’s all I ever wanted from R/C anything ever.

Finally, this wins for best costume [not hiding a wheelchair] EVER:

More Expensive Than the Armor Itself – 18 Oct 2016

Image

Buried in the bottom third of this article-ette: I hadn’t somehow noted until now that RDJR is purportedly getting $100M PER MOVIE for the next two Avengers films… and one assumes that is on top of the massive back end deal. Good for that guy.
via

Meanwhile…

Image
ITEM: Speaking of RDJR, they set up a full-on writer’s room for Sherlock 3, which is unusual. Probably if nothing else a good sign that they want to cook the best script they can for the next piece.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: New photos have emerged from Alien: Covenant. Now, yes, there are new Xenomorphs and yes, one has a yuck mouth with human teeth in it, and yes, there are very familiar designs for the egg sacs and such… but I’d like to point out that this Facehugger has a massive anus. And that it appears to be YOOGE, judging by those skulls for scale. The Facehugger, not the anus. Well, both. Happy Friday.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Talk about a good sport… this cracked me up…
via

:::

Image
ITEM: I’m nauseated by how the sexist minority of male-dominated comic fanboys debased themselves to the point that writer Chelsea Cain quit Twitter and probably left Marvel. Her Mockingbird series is still a few years out, at the rate I’m reading, but I’ve seen excerpts and it reminds me a lot of Faction’s Hawkeye: unconventional storytelling, great characterization, and novelist-style approach to comic scripting. Apparently an independent, divorced, ass-kicking female spy was too much for that contingent… even before she wore this shirt on the cover of the last issue. Madness. Fortunately a healthy host of creators have been pushing hard on this in social media, showing solidarity towards her, and the ongoing changes to the comics world that have seen a greater number of female written, female led books (particularly at Marvel) than ever before. For my daughter’s, AND my son’s sake, we need more of this.
via

:::

Image
Image
Finally, the best of this concept ever done. EVER. Well-played, Don.

Here’s another example:

Birthday Buggas and Other Things – 27 October 2016

Image
Because, you know, I have nothing else to do, I decided to start doing Copic-based Birthday Buggas for friends who have birthdays upcoming. This was done for talented artist Mel Milton, a swell guy. You can see his stuff here.

In other news…

Image
ITEM: Here’s a nice concise history of Halloween has changed as a cultural holiday in the US. I love all that stuff from the teens and twenties and thirties and such. Back when the scarecrows were human corpses half the time, I figure.
via

:::

Image
EDIT: That one time Stephen King wrote a children’s book… sort of…
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Every time Shane Black talks about Predator, I get more and more optimistic.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: This excellent Oily Moss poster design was unused because they didn’t have the license to use the billing block under the title, which is the compositional core of this layout. What a shame. It’s so good.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: A brief history of all the Knight Rider reboots you never watched.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Surprising precisely no one, Mexico City is moving forward with a Day of the Dead parade since it looked so awesome in Spectre. Granted, calling for a parade and actually getting something like what we saw in the film are two different things…
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Great news in concept: Titanfall II will decidedly NOT require a Season Pass or additional paid downloaded content after you buy the main game, which is satisfying to players like me who find those offensive moves by the game developers. I’m really looking forward to this, now that it will have a single player mode AND be available on the PS4…
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Bryan Fuller has agreed to step back from ST: Discovery, instead putting together a dream team of his previous collaborators to help manage the day to day production of the series. This was driven apparently by his schedule burden rather than general displeasure by the studio, though they aren’t pleased that the main character has not yet been cast…
via

Image
Meanwhile, Variety has some interesting ideas about either Adam Scott or Kelsey Grammar…
via

:::

ITEM: JJ Abrams and co have confirmed that his upcoming, and well cast, God Particle, is connected to the Cloverfield universe. I like this. A LOT.
via

Speaking of Cloverfield, I just noticed something:

Image

=

Image

:::

Image
ITEM: Bad news: Toy Story 4 is delayed a year. Good news: Incredibles 2 has been brought earlier a year. So yay for that! I love the Fantastic Four…
via

:::

Image
ITEM: The more I see of Old Man Logan, the more I like it. He looks awesome all haggard and bearded and scarred and rad. More than his usual look. For me, anyway.
via

:::

Image
And thus, it’s THIS kind of day. I’m fine with it.

Behold the MEHTROOPER – 26 October 2016

Image

Making Star Wars is floating the worst thing I’ve heard fromt he new SW film franchise yet. And I’ve heard very little from it all that I didn’t like when gleamed in spoiler/concept form. But this does not sound great. The drawing they put up of course negatively influences my perception but anyway…
“He has a matte black line that goes over half his mask on one side that sets him apart. The Executioner’s weapon is not unlike FN-2199’s at the handle but it has three spinning blades on the end that are said to be like something out of Phantasm (think of the crazy blades that come out of the spheres in those films). We think he has a shield but we haven’t been able to confirm if he actually uses it in the film or not.”
By the way, I’ve called this the MEHTROOPER, so if that takes off, you heard it here first.
via

Meanwhile…

Image
ITEM: Very much non-news, but apparently the chestbuster is being referred to as a ‘neomorph’… I’m just posting this because I desperately cling to hope that this will be a cool film. Strike that, that it will be a film I will personally enjoy. Prometheus was a pile, but I still found reasons to enjoy it. Even when I didn’t.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: The Punisher series cast has been fleshed out and it has been given a 2017 release date… which seems to conflict with Iron Fist, unless they are on opposing ends of the calendar year…
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Aquaman and Mera will apparently have romantic tension and conflict and grow to be fond of each other, ie. the Romancing the Stone references he has been putting out there all week. Which is all very strange for the Royal Couple. I wonder if they are an arranged coupling or some other sort of system. Huh.
via

Image re: Stanley [Artgerm] Lau, the Singapore wunderkind.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: As far as I’m concerned, this report that Lucas will not be involved in the script for Indy 5 is GOOD NEWS. Let’s be clear: I’m not a Lucas hater. But I’m not a fan of his input into the Indy films. Crystal. Skull.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: So of course Andrew Garfield is probably asked how he feels about Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, not merely from an ego standpoint, but from the perspective of having Spidey 3 canceled out from under him. Regardless of however he actually feels about it, he’s taking the high road consistently, talking about other projects he’s subsequently gotten to do, and how he likes Holland for the role and wishes him well, etc. The thing is, I had problems with both of the Spidey reboot films, the latter more than the former, but I didn’t think Garfield was one of them. He was very watchable to me, and his dynamic with eventual lover and later ex-lover, Emma Stone, was convincing. So, I think it’s a win/win for him. He did fine in the role, but all signs were that Spidey 3 was going to be a disaster, so he got his opportunity to leave the project without leaving the project. Good for him.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: I love superhero listicles, when they aren’t written for mainstream people anyway. So, this one was dear to my heart, as I’m actually a fan of different people taking on the iconic uniforms of major heroes… when done properly. Most of this list is about hot messes that didn’t meet that criteria. But I’ve been a vocal fan of the Dick Grayson-Batman era, and of Bucky’s time as Cap.
via and via

:::

Image
This piece is entitled ‘Homage to Kim Jung Gi’ and I find it mesmerizing and disturbing.

:::

Image
Speaking of those same descriptors… wow Adam Hughes…

That is all. Go pumpkin spice thyself!

Less Chimichangas for Tim Miller – 24 October 2016

Image
This one I initially discounted as rumor, but apparently the fallout stems from, aside from a general power struggle, the fact that Tim Miller wanted to do a stylized sequel, and Reynolds wanted to stick with the 4th wall lunacy of the first film.
via

In other news…

Image
ITEM: Very sad news this weekend: Steve Dillon passed away at age 54. Quite a shock. Makes me a bit nostalgic, and sad for his family certainly. TICKETS WAITING TO BE PUNCHED ABOVE US ALL, friends.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Season 2 of Jessica Jones will include all female directors as a mandate. As a rule, I think that’s pretty awesome.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: So many things over the weekend! This was announced officially later Friday afternoon, ending months of speculation and years of fantasy casting. People were talking about Glover as a young Han even before there was a Han Solo movie.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: I tend to ignore ‘science’ features that include a soundtrack and snippets of interviews with a single source. But I thought the ‘microburst’ concept was interesting, if nothing else. Weather pRn!
via

:::

Image
ITEM: This rad Lego nod to Rogue One is pretty layered in its coolness. It’s a great relief sculpture of K-2SO as it is, but then they framed it like an illustration and built Lego MARKERS. That’s nuts. I love it.

Image
And finally, I made another Lego mech… this time at the lego store in my neighborhood. You can rent time with their bins so I take my son there while my daughter is in ballet sometimes. Concepting/Search/Assembly time, about 35 minutes.

Rad Metal Robots are Rad – 21 October 2016

Image
I keep forgetting to post my micro-review of the Disney Elite Edition K-2SO… so here we go: It’s 100% minimum awesome. I’m pleased I went with this one over the Black Series version. True die-cast (all except the hands) make this a weighty, satisfying hold. I don’t think i will be able to tolerate any droid figure ever again that isn’t metal. Love it. Guards the TRDL Groffice Studio.
Image

In other, far less compelling news, all of this:

Image
ITEM: You KNOW I love building rudimentary LEGO mechs. I’m always stockpiling specialty bricks I need for joints and what not. I’m always delighted to see new examples on the interwebs. This Overwatch-inspired model is cool because of the cockpit especially.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: When I fantasize about buying another moto, it’s generally a cafe racer… but I have to say, Triumph’s new bobber style bike (called, oddly enough, the Bobber) looks SWEET.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Aquaman will be a ‘swashbuckling’ adventure film, a la Raiders, Romancing the Stone, etc. I can get behind that. We need a good solid LINEAR ADVENTURE MOVIE.
via

Also, still love this:
Image

:::

Image
ITEM: Easily build your own Batman anti-Superman helmet cowl! But actually whatever’s the opposite of easy. I’m struck, watching this, by how much the techniques employed are the same I used when painting lead miniatures. Some scratch-build work, base paint, darkwash, dry brush. I mean, it stands to reason, since I was doing all that while training for practical FX work, and the same techniques applied then as they do now. I was just sort of reminded of the distant past. Also, I love that he’s using the same LED technique I used on one of my bikes, though he ganged them together awesomely. He could have solved the discomfort by recessing them in the helmet foam. Anyway, great build video. Thanks Lung.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: All of Kate McKinnon’s outtakes from Ghostbusters in one video. The best part is: she isn’t even TRYING. This is just how she thinks.
Image
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Lung sent this to me at some inappropriate hour. SCURRED.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: This is a good fit: Miguel Sapochnick directing a new Sinbad film… given how amazing his Battle of the Bastards was on GoT…
via

:::

Image
ITEM: I’ve been meaning to draw the Iron Giant ever since we watched the film with the kids for the first time last month (well, their first time)… then again, I’ve been meaning to draw, period. This maquette is pretty great.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: I know I opined about this prior, but I’m still loving this poster art for Lost World or Lost World II or Lost World 23… whatever it is…

:::

Image
ITEM: BTS images from SS keep showing scenes or elements I want to see more of, perhaps in the Extended We Swore We Wouldn’t Edition. Like this.

:::

Image
ITEM: The concept art for Baron Zemo in costumed form, unused in Civil War, is actually pretty feasible. His mask could be a Sakovian special forces standard of some sort, I don’t know, purple for whatever reason. Anyway…

:::

Image
And with that, lil’ armored Bats and I wish you a fond weekend full of verve and vigor!

Very Much Like You – 10 October 2017

Image
By Cthulhu! How is this even possible… how can this be THIS good looking? Even if you take the +100% minimum increase in rad through use of Johnny Cash out of it.
via

In other news…

Image
ITEM: I don’t watch Walking Dead. The pilot freaked me out and then I heard about nothing but doom, gloom, despair, and cannibalism from it thereafter. However, this John Cleese narrated primer leading up to the new season was awesome.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: The one film for which I’ve managed to maintain my blackout after the first trailer is Doctor Strange. Or, as I call him, Doctor ESTRANGE!. Anyway, it has looked from day 1 like they have been taking risks, which made me optimistic. Early reviews are coming in, and are very favorable. Hope!
via

:::

ITEM: The supposed shortlist for the character Domino in Deadpool 2 has been leaked by Collider, and they are almost all attractive and interesting actresses. However, my personal vision of Domino involves a certain confidence, sharp-edged personality, and little sentimentality. Looking at this list, the two that I find most promising are:

Image
Sienna Miller

Image
and Sofia Boutella

via

:::

Image
Item: Speaking of Deadpool: as if the ad compaign wasn’t brilliant enough, and if the 4th wall nature of Deadpool played by Ryan Reynolds wasn’t entertaining enough… we now have a several minute long video of Reynolds, as Deadpool, marveling at the campaign itself… done as a response to their CLIO nomination. I mean. It’s like through the wall and then BACK again.
via

:::

Image
Item: I haven’t rah-rah’d my art pal Paul Moore lately, so here’s a recent Batman he did that, in my view, is the PERFECT Batman. ENVY.
via

:::

Image
That’s all for today. Never fear: our write-ups on Rose City and APE (and for Kris, Sinister Creature Con as well) are forthcoming, now that Kris is home from his journey. FORTHCOMING! In the meantime, to hold you over, here’s an Imperial Scout Droid. Because Star Wars.

Hookachaka HokkohookaHookachaka 19 Oct 2016

Image
Lung sent me this poster at like 6am and it was glorious. Interesting that Mantis isn’t on here, but I love everything I see about Yondu’s new cyber-mohawk.
via

Image
Plus this sneak peak got me all fired up. Again, Yondu is the standout for me, though I see approximately 33,000 other details I enjoy.
via

Meanwhile…

Image
ITEM: This trailer for Planet Earth II from BBC is amazing. Aside for my love of foxes, it was really emotional to watch it, at least for me personally. I think in my headspace I’m feeling closer to death and have more interest in the diversity of life trying to raise two animals of my own (with two more watching)…
via

:::

Image
“I don’t even understand me.”
ITEM: I haven’t gotten around to finishing my Preacher S01 review, but love love love on this blooper reel.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: And this isn’t even the HOT one. I tole my buddy a few months ago that if I ate a Creeper I think I would chestburst. But instead of an alien, it would be my wasted opportunities in life. Just blown against the wall.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: I know this whole thing was a gag, but as maybe the only Ana Kendrick fan over here, I enjoyed it. PUT DOWN THAT SCHOOLBUS!
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Finally, here’s the first look at old man toleyou.
via

He is No Monster! He is a Human Being! – 18 Oct 2016

Image
When Stephen Merchant was cast in Wolverine I was a little bit stymied. I feared a comic relief character was imminent. But this looks AWESOME. Caliban!
via

Meanwhile, this:

Image
ITEM: A few blips about what happens next for young Holland’s Spidey. Sequels? future Avengers films? I MEAN YES COME ON.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: One of the best new Lego kits in a while. It’s perfect in every way. I love the 4-in-a-row torpedo seating.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Now is your chance to get the prosthetic for the Emporer’s noggin from his first appearance (played by Rick Baker’s wife, apparently, which I did not know. Not nerd enough)
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Thanks to this kick-ass licensing deal, you will be able to order 3D kits of your Starfleet ships of choice, complete with custom designation. SICK! My Reliant dreams are renewed!
via

:::

Image
ITEM: FINALLY A SW R/C THING I CAN GET BEHIND.
via[/url

:::

Image
ITEM: I present, 11 minutes of alternate artist interpretations of the 60’s Spidey cartoon credits. It’s EVERYTHING.
[url=https://vimeo.com/187255111]via

:::

Image
ITEM: I don’t like this new canon reasoning for the red Sith lightsaber. Wasn’t the Force supposd to require balance? Why would kyber crystals only bond with ‘Light Side’ Force sensitives?
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Fear of heights or fear of deaths? Then don’t watch.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Bladerunner by way of MS PAINT, because internet.

Rebelling as We Do – 14 October 2016

Image
WELP. I held out watching this second Rogue One trailer for about three entire minutes at 3am. I caved. It’s glorious of course, though it confirms more things I didn’t want to know yet. I think my will is too weak for blackouts. My favorite thing in this trailer full of favorite things is of course, OF COURSE, this tentacled face dude in her cell with her. AWESOME.
via

Meanwhile…

Image
ITEM: Boyd Holbrook may be joining Predator. I have no opinion, but he seems hot right now, and doesn’t look like a model, so, OK. However, that Benicio Del Toro is off the project is a SUCKY thing.
via

:::

Image
This is for those fools among you who have not been preparing. Your skull will be a roadway soon enough!

:::

Image
ITEM: By Cthulhu, it’s happening!
via

:::

Image
ITEM: I’m not one for statues and maquettes (sp) and such but HOT DAMN this vampire Batman is amazing.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: For the graphic designer in your life. But it works on many levels.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Just so we’re clear: this prehistoric wasp JUMPED from victim to victim. Probably at hyperspeed and probably it was the size of a Volvo and probably…
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Abrey Plaza sold a show concept in which a women (I assume her) has a hotel or clinic or whatever where people with nightmares come for therapy and she gets up in there and things get weird. Or something. I don’t know. I’ll watch it because… well… you know why.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: I would ride the hell out of this thing, especially with the HUD and AR goggles… though I could use less THERE there on the forks… but I don’t even know how to process that someone is saying BMW claims you could ride it without a helmet. I mean, you CAN. But self-correcting centripetal balance adjustment doesn’t have any bearing on collision or road condition-based SMASHMOUTH. Just saying. Strange liability statement. Assuming you’re in a jurisdiction that requires helmets per law.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: THIS THIS THIS:
via

:::

Image
Final item: nice nod to the comics in this still from Supergirl…
