Hell Hathaway No Fury – 22 Dec 2016

Image
As people are rabidly circling the concept of Megan Fox as Poison Ivy (which doesn’t thrill me) this article makes a good case for bringing Anne Hathaway back and introducing her into the DCCU. Normally I’d say keep the Nolanverse separate and leave it all alone. But frankly: she was great, she WANTS to return to the character, and she could offset some of the vampiness off Harley and the presumed oversexualization of Ivy. It’s a thought.
link!

Meanwhile, on earth:

– This early material for the unfortunately titled Lost City of Z is a welcome respite from most of what has come out in 2016: straight up old school retro period adventure movie. I’m in!
link!

– This life-sized articulated and self-automated Iron Man armor fits the bill… or so you’d thing… HOWEVER they are careful to note it is apparently not wearable. And why the… I mean… you went THIS far…link!

– But all hope is not lost: here’s a mech proof of concept actually doing what we always wanted them to do… right before the earth dies.link!

– Denis Villaneuve may actually get his dream project: DUNE. link!

– From yesterday, I thought i’d offer up the Twitter link to the Man That Is You Know Definitely Not a Wolf: link!

– Random news of the day: R. L. Stine (Goosebumps) is apparently writing a Man-Thing series for Marvel. I mean… link!

– NASA Gifs ftw link!

And with that, I may or may not leave you with the last post before the Xmas holiday, during which I may or may not change my mind and post again.

Also, listeners of the Robot-Kraken podcast: fear not! We have something cooking to finish off the year and some exciting stuff planned starting in January. We’ve been burdened by realLife commitments over the last month but we plan on getting back on schedule after the new year.

Wes Anderson Makes Everything Better – 21 Dec 2016

Image

Today is the dawn of a NEW ERA. Hope returns to the world. Behold: Wes Anderson rambles his way through announcing his next project. YAY! link!

Meanwhile:

– Photos of Blade Runner 2 are continuing to seep into the interwebs, further showing Ryan Gosling suited up and fully immersed in the world and Harrison Ford’s Decker (retired) apparently not requiring a costume at all at this point. At least he took the earring out. link! … I do appreciate the effort they are putting into reminding us that Roger Deacon is on the project, and largely, green screens are not. link!

– Matthew McCoughnehhysysyee notes again that he’d be down to reprise his role as Rust Cole, in True Detective, because OF COURSE HE WOULD. It was solid gold. link!

– Lung and I have been lamenting the further superheroification of Batman’s costume in this pic. It’s not all bad: he has two suits in Justice League: one being the same deal as BVS but with more black, and one being the ‘TACTICAL SUIT” which is code for MORE ARMOR BITS AND RANDOM SEAMS. link!

– Another pic of Katherine Waterston on the set of Alien:Covenant is out, and she looks suitable blanched and stark, as she should for this project (it’s like some sort of before/after companion to how she looked in Inherent Vice. While alive. Anyway, also, James Franco is in it? What? link!

Image
-This is a feed you can find if you look for it. NOT A WOLF. Kills me.

– Netflix is tripping me out how they are able to have projects in production without people even knowing about them. For example, here’s another one: Travelers. What??? Anyway, i’m on board, i just can’t believe I didn’t know they had time cops or whatever cooking and we didn’t even know. link!

Image
– Lastly, just in time for the holidays: recreating the more dangerous scenes from Home Alone. We just watched this with the kids. Zoe is the target age and was cackling and rolling around. Matteo was too young and just stared at it and said things like ‘is that ALLOWED?’ (answer: no)… link!

Home Again Home Again Jiggity Jig – 20 Dec 2016

Image

Welp, while I would argue that visuals would be the LEAST of the risk factors in bringing a Blade Runner sequel to life, I’m 100% on board and plan to love it. link!

Meanwhile, in space:

– The lead (1st officer) in ST: Discovery has been cast. A favorite of fans of Walking Dead: Sonequa Martin Green…
link!

:::

– Pretty good example of nerd press going apeshit as they’ve been manipulated into doing: Megan Fox buys some Poison Ivy/Harley books and expresses interest in the role, and all of a sudden it’s a thing. I could generate a pretty solid list of projects Megan Fox might have an interest it. Not that I have any particular issue with her or her in that role. Though I prefer when she’s not playing the ‘hottest girl in the room’ character type. She HAS played other variations. Such as ‘hottest girl in the room who is actually somewhat nerdy’. hahaha. link!

:::

– I still have no idea if Aquaman will be good or not. But he DOES look good. That’s at least something, right? link!

– Build your own mecha gloves. And do me a favor, build me some too. link!

– Ouch. Smearing Tilda Swindon can backfire. link!

– The word on the street is that Han Solo starts filming in Spring. Rogue One pulled off retconning in the best possible way, not hashing into the story that pre-existed, but supplementing it. Much more difficult challenge ahead for this film. link!

– I have very little confidence in this film. But the reason i bring it up is that it makes me think that the costume designers must rejoice when modern John Cusack is cast, because they can take the time allocated to him and spend it on Angry Birds or whatever. Because same. Every time. And he dresses this way in realLife by the way. I saw him at Rose City Comic Con, same deal. link!

– Jessica Camacho has been cast as Gypsy on Arrow. Now look, I haven’t seen her work, and I haven’t come across Gypsy as a character since flipping through the DC Who’s Who books in the 80s… this character needs an update badly (even Marvel has bypassed a lot of that cultural trope, at least on film, with Scarlet Witch) but it’s again good to see actors of different ethnicities in these roles. link!

– The teaser was already great, and of course I was presold, but this full trailer for John Wick 2 is GREAT. link!

– Plus, misc. items thus:

Image
Corey Smith’s DD Redesign looks AWESOME, but I’ve always felt it is key that DD’s look not broadcast he is blind. There are plenty of characters where this is a thing, and I love it, but his secret identity and a good chunk of his character concept is based on this being hidden.

Image
Best VENN Diagram ever

Image
I noted this in our Robot-Kraken Instagram (Red Tentacle) but this was one of my favorite parts from the recent Darth Vader comics. He THREW the lightsaber and broke a Y-Wing, like it’s no thing.

Anyway, the force is with you and you are one with the force, if you’re lucky…

At Least They Have a Spare – 14 Dec 2016

Image

“At least they have a spare.”
“Bespin, a planet made of matte paintings…”
Oh, it’s good.
link!

Meanwhile, in space:

– So, Ayers is returning for a Gotham Sirens film, PLUS apparently we have an SS sequel and a Deadshot film on the books. And by books, I mean they wrote it down on a Steno pad somewhere and then circled the words and underlined them furiously. link!

– My favorite wrong thing ever for today: Tsum Tsum Star Wars plushies WITHIN A DISEMBOWELED Tauntaun. link!

– Dunkirk full trailer is out. I’ve tired of war movies, because deaths, but Nolan, so. link!

– Despicable Me 3 trailer is out, only notable here because I have to watch these with my kids 33 times, and frankly I thought the original DM was pretty good, design wise. link!

– Patrick Wilson has been cast as the Ocean Master. THE OCEAN MASTER! See, this is the problem I have with solo films around characters defined by their powers, and set in the environment in which they are the center of the design universe. Flash with a bunch of speedster characters, Arrow with a bunch of archers, etc. An undersea Atlantean movie with goofy Aquaman villains could be tiresome quickly. link!

– The OA is the next secret Netflix show to appear out of nowhere. It’s really astounding they’ve been able to pull off this secret production stuff. So far, anyway. link!

– Powerless (NBC) is now set in an insurance company owned by Wayne Enterprises, which is a heavy-handed way to pull this into the DCU or DCCU or whatever it ends up aligning to… Wayne doesn’t have to own EVERYTHING. link!

Finally:

Image
– Paolo Del Toro’s ‘Strange Wooden Boxes’ are pretty awesome. WANT THE BAT for no reason. link!

That’s all for now! Back to work polishing your Death Trooper armor.

Those Damn Dirty Apes – 9 Dec 2016

Image

The trailer for War for the Planet of the Apes was released, and watching it, I’m quite a bit less interested than with the first two. However, I did find it interesting that, in this brief scene, there’s a gorilla fighting WITH Woody Harrelson’s guys… link!

Meanwhile:

– Having finished Westworld the other day, I went back and rewatched the full Ghost in the Shell trailer. They cyberpunk kid in me is just at full-load excited about this stuff. Take another look, why don’t you…
link!

– Happy holidays: here’s an AI written christmas carol I can completely see being piped through the public speakers while renegade robots slaughter everyone in the plaza, tinsel and organ paste and what not everywhere. Make your time.
link!

– Speaking of Westworld, it’s hard enough to marry Jimmi Simpson’s portrayal of William with his earlier recurring role on Always Sunny… somehow, though, I never noted he was also Lyle the Intern on the Letterman Show… link!

– I watched the latest Logan trailer again in front of Doctor Toleyou, and man, I have to agree, it’s looking great. link!

– oh look: another expensive BB-8 product I MUST HAVE. link!

– well, the good news is apparently Snoke will be animatronic in SW VIII if this is to be believed. That’s happy stuff for me. The bad news is he’s apparently still massive, and I’m not thrilled about that. I was hoping that was just some hologram propaganda thing. Anyway. link!

Its Hot and Wet – Also, Spider-Man 08 Dec 2016

Image

Coming to you from a storm in Honolulu… here’s the new Spidey trailer which you have surely watched 33 times. I’m quite satisfied.
link!

Meanwhile, THIS:

– The incredibly nuanced soundtrack for Westworld is now available for free streamed from Spotify. link!

– More misc. stuff on Ghost in the Shell. I forgot to mention, I thought it was pretty savvy that they used those little scrambled clips from the film we’ve seen before, but interrupting movie theatre bumpers, during Doctor Strange… like, ‘get your popcorn and coke over th—‘ and then it blurs into geishabots… link!

And speaking of Doctor Strange (review and podcast forthcoming) it is killing it in a way I didn’t expect at all, with all the no-punching and much-talking and even-more-drug… even against a Disney film. i mean a Disney Princess film. link!

– The next X-Men movie is apparently starting production on the Dark Phoenix saga… which won’t be a saga, but a highly compressed film… which I’m actually all for because I quite liked Jean and Scott in the most recent semi-hot mess. link! and PS… I was not a fan of James Marsters as Cyclops back then, being all rigid and blank, but on Westworld he’s really great. I can’t help but imagine him playing Scott Summers in a more nuanced role, perhaps something like what happened in the comics over the last few years… the red suit and the global takeovers and the Phoenix business and the basic villainy.

– Great article on one of my favorite Marvel characters in recent years: the Latina, gay, teen Captain America Chavez. link!

Bonus, my last illustration of her:

Image

– If you’re willing to pay for the extra content in the insidious/Darth Sidious system Sony has set up for DLC, you can play Jyn Erso in Rogue One… link!

– Nerd alert: check out the original edition of D&D… I’m always fascinated by those early days unwittingly kicking off an entire industry that was highly formative in my youth. link!

– If you liked Dexter, and you plan to pre-like Iron Fist (as I do) then you’ll find Inhumans in capable hands. link!

– If you know your George Miller Justice League that wasn’t history, you know Armie Hammer was almost in the red undies. Signs might suggest he’s heading for green ones next… link!

– Finally, I had SUCH low expectations, but Legion on FOX looks REALLY GOOD. link!

Now, the eternal sleep. Until morning. Or more TRDL work, not sure yet!

That Must be So Embarrassing! – 5 Dec 2016

Image
– So the GoG2 teaser trailer was the talk of the weekend on the interwebs. I watched it the first few times in difficult listening conditions so it’s only been today that I’ve seen it in full screen with audio. Yeah, it’s pretty glorious. And while the Grootisms are indeed awesome, the takeaway that has me laughing each time I watch is Drax, laughing about Mantis’ ‘inner secrets’ power, gleefully chanting ‘DO ME!’
link!

Meanwhile:

– The other big trailer as of last night was The Mummy. This seemed so dodgy on paper. But I really like Tom Cruise movies and from what I’m seeing here, despite how derivative it looks, it still looks FUN. So I’m supportive. Optimism, I drink it like water and it sustains me. Unless it doesn’t. link!
Plus, bonus stuffs: link!

– Check out the new Netflix documentary on Floyd Norman, the first african-american animator at Disney. It’s a hills and valleys thing, and pretty interesting. I mean, I think it is. I just read the thing, I havent seen the doc yet. But let’s assume so. link!

– I’m not even embarrassed about wanting that snow gear parka: link!

– It’s promo material for the Thai market… so it may not be 100% but it’s close enough to know ME NO LIKEY. But whatever. My general sense is: if they make Thor into a galactic gladiator buddy road trip comedy, it can’t get any worse than the second film tonally. link!

– Spectral is a Netflix film starring James Badge Dale (?) of one time 24 fame. It was made for cinematic release and then sold to Netflix instead. Normally I’d say: not a good sign, right. But Netflix has been spending money hand over fist to buy premium content so you never know. The FX look film-grade at least. Personally, I thought they couldn’t possible make ‘unstoppable/faceless/innumerable alien attack waves’ any more boring or futile… but hey, look, GHOST ALIENS. link!

– Aquaman has a release date. Which is something, but not really. The only reason I bring it up is that it reminded me of something I keep forgetting to mention in the podcast: I get how Snyder and Wan are going for this mysterious badass thing, but thematically shouldn’t he be facing TOWARDS the camera with a giant wave behind him? link!

Thats all for today. Have fun holding your breath for two weeks! ROGUEONEROGUEONEROGUEONE

SEXY MONSTERS ARE A THING – 3 Dec 2016

Image
I’m a sucker for Tom Cruise (film unit, not human unit) and re-imaginingsm or redesigns if you will, or properties. So, all this? I’m on board. Plus, I still lament the way Enchantress’ second crappy cosplay costume overpowered her first rad drrty witch one in Suicide Squad, so looks like we get a redux here. Also, Annabelle Wallis from Peaky Blinders is in this and she’s CUUUUUUUTE.

Meanwhile, other things:

Image
– I’ve never really had a hankering to walk around in a Stormtrooper kit, like at a con or on Halloween or what have you. But seeing the Death Trooper at 1:1 scale, with that asymmetrical shoulder thing, WANT. Granted, for the record, i think the Beach Trooper is my favorite design from the film. AIM FOR THE THIGHS WE JUST GET ONE SHOT! Because, uh, no thigh armor.

Image
– I’m no fan of Ghost Rider. But hot damn what a cool painting!
I’d wear a sassy fur coat too if I had a demon in my skull.

Image
– From writer Jason LaTour. LOVE IT.

– Confirmation yesterday that Stark Upgrades for Spidey will be DITKORIFFIC. via

– THE SNOW
via

– And it appears that Bryan Fuller has not only pulled away from managing ST: Discovery due to his American Gods commitments, but after the first few scripts and the overall setup of the show, he’s pretty much out of the picture. Sad to hear, given his passion was what got it going in the first place.
