Decepticon Battles Rule Everything Around Me – 13 April 2016

Since it’s been awhile since I shared it, and it was so popular in my home last night, here’s another look at the Soundwave breakdancing video.

In OTHER news, far less interesting:

The black diving iguana on the Galapagos Islands is pretty rad. It wasn’t a new discovery (Darwin despised them, nicely biased) but once someone posted to rediit or wherever that a godzilla baby was nomming on things underwater it took off.

We’ve seen a lot of cool concept industrial design, since 3D viz tools became so accessible… this Batmobile is no exception. While the numbering is misleading and distracts from seeing the design as a Batmobile and not a race car, it WAS pretty clever as a means of numbering the views. Anyway, I love the red-backed fins and the sweep past the wheels.

Lung has already posted separately, savaging the way the new Dr. Strange trailer looks like a ripoff of Inception, though as is often the case, I’m optimistic. I like, in the poster, how you see his eye through his fingers and the way his hands are prominent.

Meanwhile, Marvel got thirty designers together in one of those Death Star trash compactors, crushing them while they frantically sketched, and then picked the paper out of the gore and taped all the pieces together to come up with this ransom note of a trade dress. Guh.

Inhumans is being bumped indefinitely. Between bringing Spider-Man into the fold and the ongoing war with Permutter’s TV division, I’m not terribly shocked. However, SHIELD has firmly established Inhumans as the MCU/TV version of mutants, and did a good job of it, so there’s no reason this can’t jump to film, if they ever just address the power conflict between Permutter (not my favorite) and Fiege. That said, if they would just move all the Marvel properties to Netflix, I’d be even happier.

Why are they Looking at Harley Changing Dunno -11 April 2016

The new SS trailer, which I again told myself I wouldn’t watch and then immediately watched, gives a good deal more dialog and a few new story beats. I like everything I’m seeng and hearing. After Civil War and Preacher, this next in my hotlist. Speaking of hotlist… that Harley though…

Look, we’ve covered this in three posts plus talked about it like 33 hours worth (and not even on Robot-Kraken podcast yet) so I’ll just leave this here as a reminder that it’s only been two days or so since the trailer was released, and I already am having fever dreams about it.
Here’s a good analysis from the usual suspect:

This Behind The Scenes/ Easter Eggs/Development video by my man Mr Sunday Movies was pretty good. His Easter Egg video for the film was pretty comprehensive as well. In this one, I was struck by how, on the one hand, concept Doomsday was more interesting proportions (I love drawing beasties with hunch musclebacks and long arms) but on the other, STILL MUTED BROWN. Imagine had they given him a striking blue or green look? I’m so tired of drab designs for major characters.

Cloak and Dagger was one of the projects that a poorly realized April Fool’s announcement someone made had been supposedly greenlit (along with She-Hulk and several others)… however, a few days later it was officially announced as a real series deal for the formerly ABS Family channel, Freeform. I doubt the two were related, but it sucked for the project announcement because I ignored it for days, assuming it was fake.

The Honest Trailer for Force Awakens was good. The trope about it being a clone (so to speak) of New Hope, thats kind of tired, but the rest of it was fun. “Han Solong”… and my favorite, above, Rey’s so poor she has to make her own action figures.

I had this whole elaborate rambling conversation with an interfriend about great female superhero film characters, who our favorites were, etc and the friend was positing that Gadot as WW was the best we’ve had yet. I still argue that Hayley Atwell’s Agent Carter takes it. She’s amazing.

Her ROYAL THIGHNESS indeed.

Seriously, though, between Atwell’s acting, her character’s dialog and story arc, and the thematic material, she owns it.

I’m not one to get too worked up about rights to things posted on other services’ sites like FB and IG and such. You put it on the net, it’s in the wild, I say. Sure, they can steal images from my personal pages despite copyright notices and go to town on them, but in the end, what can you do. And social media sites are a more sensitive one because people tend to think of them as private even when they aren’t, and more and more, particularly young people, overshare. Less on FB (as young people have moved on) but still. HOWEVER. I have to admit, the terms on Oculus Rift should give pause. That’s a whole new level of personal data collection, given how little we know yet about the way VR will integrate into personal life.

Leto is doing interviews, going on about reinventing the Joker character as an auteur… to me, there’s not enough humble fun in his responses. I think he sounds like he’s intimidated and defensive in the wake of Ledger. You have to do your own thing, absolutely, and the weirder the better (I wasn’t into it, and now I am) but to me the smart play would have been to say ‘Ledger was the best Joker ever EVER, but I’m just going to make mine a wild garbage fire and have fun with it.’

Precisely what we DIDN’T need from WB in the wake of BvS: overreaction and misplaced compensation for the tone of that film, by reshooting an already darkly funny, but generally urgent, film like Suicide Squad. GREAT.

Hans Zimmer claims to be retiring from superhero film scoring… what a strange (and saddening) statement. My sense is that he’s spent a metric ton of time on this, especially on Man of Steel and BvS where he collaborated… and then the films are panned enough that it feels like a slap. His work on the Nolanverse is legendary (and not just my viewpoint; they are widely accepted as part of what established the tone of the film) but look, I wasn’t even a superfan of these last two super scores. His work on Inception was awesome, and his Interstellar is his BEST WORK. So, if less ‘superhero films’ means more Interstellar scores, I’m game. But not more Kung Fu Panda scores. It’s always linked to the type of project, the director’s vision, and the tone. Just like the Batman stuff, Interstellar was Zimmer and Nolan in sync.
