PROBABLY the greatest detective in the world – Robots Root 8 June 17

Look, I’ll admit, I assumed, probably from leftover Grand Budapest fever dreaming, that Murder on the Orient Express would be a nutty surreal comedy. But I’m still in 133%. Plus, some would say Poirot’s mustache IS comedy. Not me, friends.

Thus, with suitable Kirby Krackle, it’s Robot’s Root!

 • These Hot Toys models are so eerily realistic. I just realized, not having been in the market for such things, that these have some sort of skeleton and a skin/covering system like a Realdoll(tm)… so basically a mini-Realdoll(tm) lacking, theoretically, certain anatomical features. Ugh, I’m creeped out. That said, impressive sculpt on this Amazonian Battle Chestpiece Diana.
 • The Buck Rogers plane is killing me.
 • I think I’d be fully into Ozark on Netflix anyway, but Jason Bateman totally elevates it.
 • I didn’t think I’d be interested in a Get Shorty remake. But the CAST!
 • This looks like a hot mess compilation of every other alien invasion action movie, but done on a 2008 iMac. BUT! I’m a glass half full (of broken glass) kind of guy: as about 1:35 in the trailer, one guy gets vaporized, and Lee pace runs over and catches the weapon the guy was holding and keeps firing it. It’s total Road Runner business. Revolting. Yes I said it.
 • Red Letter Media released the single best review of Covenant ever. And I say that, after recording thirteen hours of Coveant reviewage (rhymes with sewage) for Robot-Kraken. Best part: 5:30 into this majestic video.
 • Battlecat Mittens.
 • Lung pointed out the new Coco trailer, so I pulled up the Book of Life trailer for comparison. Loved the latter, will love the former. So much win all around. Except death. Death-win!
 • Hannah John-Kamen has been cast in a ‘key role’ in Ant-Man and Wasp. Curious… She’s best known for Killjoys, but she’s been in Game of Toles and Force Awakens… and will be in Ready Player One.
 • There’s ANOTHER Trek something something coming, with a serious pedigree (aka Wrath of Khan/Undiscovered Country) and supposedly NOT a rewrite of the new untitled film script for the Pineverse. I wonder if they are plotting out series’ or films set at different points in the timeline? Seems like it would be monumentally confusing to many viewers. I mean, Force Awakens vs. Rogue One was hard enough for mainstream fans to process. Anyway, courtesy of this technicolor yawn of a web page, which makes my eyes burn even as it is often right.
 • Jennifer Connelly is on board (see what I did) the Snowpiercer TV adaptation. Quite a catch for AMC, but while the film was a refreshing surprise in its quality (I haven’t seen the original) yet ANOTHER property makes me return to the basic question os who would build a ‘global’ train track and perpetual train during an ice apocalypse. It’s very Playstation.
 • Thandie Newton just described Han Solo as a ‘dope-a-franchise’ … I love her HARD.

And with that, I leave you to tend to your furious mustache…

Hey Look Theres Jeff Goldblum – Robots Root 6 June 17

As if the Thor: Ragnarok trailer couldn’t get any better

Lo, tis Robot’s Root for 6 June 2017!

 • Charlie Heaton of Stranger Things up for Cannonball in New Mutants? I’ll take it. Meanwhile, Blu Hunt, a relative unknown, has been cast as Dani Moonstar. On the, uh, surface, she looks good to me. Acting? Ethnicity? Can’t say. Finally, Henry Zaga has been cast as Sunspot. Shrug!
 • Here’s a trailer for Preacher S02 I didn’t watch because blackout. Please, let me make it until 20 June…
 • I’ve seen at least 13 different clickbaity articles about the ‘leaked Punisher poster’… let me save you some time. It’s a skull. Sorted! Now, to hold breath until November…
 • So Millie Bobby Brown auditioned for the role of X-23… that’s interesting. I wish we learned that before recording our latest podcast on the subject. An interesting what if? comparison there…
 • John Wick 3 is GO!
 • Janelle Monae is on board for the Phllip P Dick anthology. That’s intriguing to me, as I love her deal, and I love that she wanted to be involved. I still don’t love anthologies, though.*
 • I don’t know if its true or parody that this ‘Paramount’s Dark Universe’ group shot was a composite (damn potochop!) but now I can’t stop staring at Russell Crowe’s hand. But man I still love most of this pic, especially bad as nails Sofia Boutella. When I first saw this pic last week, I cropped her out as pose reference for an upcoming art. I mean damn.
 • Earthling Cinema kills it, so to speak, once again with a review of Ex Machina. “AKA the Pollack Method”
 • Chris Hemsworth isn’t hurt about being left out of the last few films, right?
 • I’m no fan of Todd McFarlane or Spawn, but I love love love seeing the youthful iterations of later commercial properties. Close to my heart, of course.
 • The new Runaways series has been officially announced. I like Anka, but we’ll see how this new creative team, and direction, works in the context of the high standards of the past.
 • Finally, it sounds like the ST: Bridge Crew immersive VR game has stepped up to the promise of both the VR platform and the Star Trek gaming experience. I’m not in the market for more Playstation gear to languish unused in my living room, but I like what I’m reading.

Back to your work friend friending!

Visit Deeply Dapper at FanX in SLC This Weekend

Chris of Deeply Dapper will be at FanX in Salt Lake City, Utah this weekend. He’ll have all of his usual nerdy goods like flasks, soaps, prints, metal plate appliques, etc plus he’s bringing a limited number of copies of his new Princess Bride poster! Check him out at Table GOLD 26

TRDL Convention Schedule 2017

Image

Now that I have the shows arranged, here are my convention appearances planned for 2017.

Note: WW Sacramento, Heroes and Villains Portland, and Rose City, will all be shows that Deeply Dapper and I will table together, so if you are aa Robot-Kraken Podcast fan, now’s your chance to see us in the flesh, prod us for cybernetics, ply us with rum, etc.

This is somewhat subject to change: we are waitlisted on a few shows, and there are a few others we are thinking about, based on how the June shows go. But for now, if you are on the West Coast, you have an opportunity to come visit, talk comics and standard nerd stuff, pick up some art books, prints, and original work, and possibly be featured on the Robot-Kraken Podcast convention feature. Hope to see you in California or Oregon this year!

Deeply Dapper at Saltcon Plus Other Things 3 March 2017

Image
Robot-Kraken fans take note: Deeply Dapper (Kris McClanahan) is tabling at Saltcon in Salt Lake City this weekend. Crack your coffers open and go pay him a visit!

Plus:

Trailer Updatery Commencing:

Image
I like everything I’m seeing from the latest Pirates film… even the new de-aged Jack Sparrow.
Optimisms! From whence there were none. I mean, I loved the first trailer, but based on the last few installments… link!

Image
and then, on the other side of the optimism spectrum, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which we never had any doubts about over here at Robot-Kraken (cue our March broadcast) and this new trailer brings plenty of new yeeee. link!
Even the trailer TEASER was awesome: link!]link!

Image
And then, the film most people wrote off based on Prometheus, but which is looking block-rockin*: Alien: Covenant, has a new trailer: link! Oddly enough, though, the otherwise quite aesthetically pleasing Katherine Waterston has been successfully blanched of interest, and I’m a little bit concerned about the ‘couples’ thing. I get it, Adam and Eve. Let it go, Ridley Scott.
The standout moment for me was the Xenomorph headbutting the cockpit glass.

Image
Finally, the new Kong trailer looks super fun. It’s one of those trailers that would almost seem more stylish than the film itself, except for how much the early reviews are saying this is a kick ass film. Thoughts:
/// The sound fx are amazing. Timed music and beats to elements of imagery.
/// John C Reilly continues to own my attention, which is saying something, since Brie Larson is like RIGHT THERE.
/// the use of ‘Gotta get outta this place’ and then recontextualized twice into different songs
/// that shell drop, so metaphorical and stuff
/// that nixon bobble
/// plus I spy a kraken
I still can’t get behind those dumb as Skull buggas. Why would THAT form evolve in nature? But anyway.
link!

Meanwhile…

– Aquaman Always Uses the Butterfly Stroke: Snyder released some weird, blurry, underwater test footage of Aquaman. Look, that’s actually what I WANT it to be. I’m tired of underwater supershenanigans just looking like Simi Valley but with air bubbles. Or in this case, no air bubbles.
link!

– I’m the Grayist There Is at What I Do. Make That Greyist: I haven’t even seen Logan yet (Sunday) but I’m already chomping at the bit for the black and white iteration, if this comes to pass.
link!

– The Correct Amount of Cyberleather Olivia Wildes is N+1: Reading about the near-dead, moastly dead, pretty much definitely dead Tron 3 makes me have sads.
link!

Image
– I’ll Show YOU a Heat Sink Like You’ve Never SEEN Before: An artist I follow on IG, from WETA (PEARCE) is the hand behind their kickstarter board game. I love this thing. I’d buy in in a hot minute if I wasn’t trying to be reasonable after too many convention related costs. Read about it here:
link!
And here’s the Kickstarter plus more detail. SO GOOD. This guy is my current favorite mecha artist, BTW. And given my obsession with Shirow, that’s saying something. There’s rumblings about the cost, the actual playability of Cryptozooic’s other offerings, and the fact that a WETA-affiliated project doesn’t need crowdfunding. But it looks so fun.

And a sample of his stuff:

– In Brightest Day, In Blackest Night, Marketing is Marketing: Everyone’s teasing Lantern being introduced in the Justice league film in some way. Which Lantern? Who knows? Do they immediately die? Probably. Is Henry Cavill being cheeky on IG? YES. Is Armie Hammer looking involved? Very much. But lets take a step back and Marvel, if you will, that the state of WB is such that they can make teasing the involvement of GREEN LANTERN IN A JUSTICE LEAGUE MOVIE an attempt at viral marketing for pre-release buzz. I mean, seriously. Why WOULDNT he be, and also, what about the three weeks of SEVEN SEVEN UNITE THE SEVEN they committed to (with 6 characters) until they dropped it. link!

– Flinty Actor Needed; Arm Optional: This round robin on Cable casting is hilarious. I like Pierce Brosnan, I can see Russel Crowe… but I especially like the rumor today that David Harbour from Stanger Things screen tested for it. If that’s even remotely true, my money’s on that one. I can see that working in the Deadpool tone much more easily. link! for a photomanip of Crowe, and link! for a cut and paste of Harbour. Just because.

– Or Maybe Change the Wifi Password: This is an amusing story, at least from a parental perspective. Seems severe. But hey, GET A JOB.link!

– Its My Party and I’ll Bat-Tusi if I Want to: Apparently, and again, much of this is rational-sounding speculation, really, like Matt Reeves really put WB over a barrel and got full creative control of Batman. Good on him, if so. link!

– Speaking of Leaping Robots: While we’re at it, let’s improve their freaky spider walking. For more urgent muderdeathkills.link!

– Nolan is Being Nolan: I love that he found a way to make the telling of a war movie in present tense become fractured and complicated. It really makes sense, though, what he’s talking about. I found it fascinating. Merging events that occur either as a week, day or a few hours, depending on POV, but all at once… link!

– Red Skull is Back Oh Wait: Rumor mumblings indicate the Black Mask may be in Gotham City Sirens. I like him more, visually, then the Red Skull, frankly, and I think he could look pretty cool tricked out and bedazzled or whatever in the Ayers-SS-Aesthetic. link!

Also, some casting updates, because happening:

Inhumans Casting Additions: Serinda Swan as Medusa (who I assume will always be preferred in her Zatanna fishnets over this no matter how good the costume and FX are) …
link!

X-Men Casting Addition: Steve Moyer of True Blood has jumped on board, as well as a few others. The girl that was weirdly annoying on Gotham for awhile, etc link!

Thus, I leave you for today. Go forth and apply your nerd standard trade!

Who Is Your Favorite TRDL Character?

Image

As you know, we are hard at work on the new TRDL Sourcebooks. We have an order of magnitude more to share this time than in the first edition. However, many previously-published characters are receiving facelifts. Maybe the design felt a bit dated, or the art wasn’t up to current standards… but hey! Here’s a chance to be involved! Let us know who your favorite Third Rail Design Lab Universe character is, and we will make sure they get a fresh art update for the books. And three (3) participants will receive the line art for the illustration as a bonus!

So, if you have the first edition of the TRDL Sourcebook, crack it open, and if not, peruse the webs for some of the early characters and let us know!

APE Convention Action and Other Things – 5 Oct 2016

Image
Kris BAM! and I BOOM! will be at the Alternative Press Expo (APE)  this weekend, October 8-9, 2016 in San Jose, CA. If you are in Silicon Valley, or feel like a fun drive to SJ, come say hi! We will have a bevy of goods and services at the convention, with an emphasis on printed materials. I will have the TRDL Tribute Art book, two Wrongrobot books, and over 200 prints to choose from, along with a host of original art pieces. Come check it out!
Meanwhile…
Image
ITEM: After David Ayers was taking all that heat about fan frustration with Suicide Squad, and INSISTED there was no extended or director’s cut and that the feature film was HIS vision, not the (obviously) studio-edited version… the studio promptly released a teaser for… and extended edition. I suspect, like BVS, I’ll like the EE better than the theatrical release. It’s only something like 11 minutes longer, so I doubt it has the rumored major abandoned Joker plot in it, or at least to the extent Leto thought it would be. I’m game, though…
via:::

Image
ITEM: Apparently Peter Quill plays a major role in Infinity War. That GoG are involved is not surprising, and that they would use the standout hero is also not surprising. But anyway, there you are. Maybe!
via

:::

Image
ITEM: The first promo material from Wolvie 3 came out this morning, along with a snap of the script. I REALLY like that poster. Says volumes.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: While I don’t agree the poster art thus far has been the sucks, I DO agree this is the best one yet. Side note, scroll to the end of the link, that K2SO shot is my current desktop,so let it be known.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Iron Fist is scheduled to be released on March 17, so file those vacation forms.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: The Punisher principal photography has begun, if you believe what you read. I still think that, based on the production and release schedules, this isn’t his solo series, but actually shots for his inclusion in Defenders. We’ll see if I’m right! Or, if I’m not, we won’t mention it.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: This Silicon Valley lead0in to the Google Keynote the other day was life imitating art imitating life imitating something. Didn’t make me interested in the keynote, but DID make me jones for more SV…

:::

“It’s interesting. It was a huge hit movie that so many more people went to see than any movie I’ve made in my career. It was the biggest hit of my career. And then it had a lot of editorial negativity — fans went, and I got a lot of positive response. It was interesting, that movie, because it was judged not necessarily on execution so much as its tone. People seemed to want to have a lighter tone to the movie, and I thought that was interesting because that’s subjective. Tone is not a qualitative thing. It’s subjective, right? Some tones resonate with me that might not with you. And the tone of the movie was really parallel to the Frank Miller book, which I liked and thought was great. I’m glad that so many people went and so many people liked the movie and it worked out.”
ITEM: Listen, all of the sadfleck memery aside, I think he’s handled the criticism of the film well, without throwing Snyder under the bus, showing how professional a businessman he is. He’s got some major irons in the fire, so he has to keep moving. But I liked the note that it’s his most successful film. Cue Lung pouring an infinite whiskey GIF…
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Karen Gillan posted this photo of ‘three Marthas’ from the set of Jumanji. It’s kind of meta. On the one hand, yeah, stunt doubles, but on the other hand, it’s what would happen if people COULD play her in a game. Everyone on the map would be Marthas following each up ladders.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: This deleted scene from Apocatole features Beast giving Summers his visor. It’s similar to an earlier scene in the movie, but I liked it for the logic.
via

:::

Final Note: as you saw up top, and in any of the art posts I’ve done recently (and actually a good amount of the existing posts, retroactively) I’ve moved to an 800 pixel standard for art related happenings. I have yet to modify the containers for the blog and forum, but soon. In the meantime…
