1. Well At Least There’s That: I don’t know if the first Lonely Island film, Popstar, will be funny. I can’t tell anymore. It doesn’t really feel funny. And it’s a strange choice, when Entourage ate itself with seriousness and ended up being a farce. But I will say: any movie with Pink as a unicorn tamer is at least a thing that is happening. A Perdment, as we say at Robot-Kraken.

3. Ready Player Three: A long-awaited upgrade to the PS4 has just launched, for free, that allows users to remotely play off of their console from other devices in the same network. This is an example of the kind of feature that previously would have held no value for me, and now sounds amazing. The private access to my living room TV is quite limited, and the kids don’t get access to games at their age by my lovely wife’s request… and she’s watching shows most nights. So that all means that gaming for me is relegated to a night a week I set aside, after everyone is in bed. Now, if I want, I can hop on the PS4 from the Cloffice and have at it.
Probably wont.
Arting to be done.
But I COULD.

Plus He Runs Panther Fast and other things 9 Mar 2016

Sorry this is so massive, but you need to just soak in the details. By the far the best one in this series of unmasking solemn clips from the Civil War promos. The series makes extra sense when you think of the comics’ theme of identity registration specifically. We’ll see how it plays out on (glorious) film.

1. Whats the Point Anyway: Supposedly Rian Johnson’s production will be less secretive about filming the next Star Wars film. I’m fine either way. I avoid spoilers if I want to, or I seek them out if I want to. Adulting on the interwebs!

2. Arrow Deflectors Maybe: On the heels of that blurb the other day about Bryan Singer supposedly working on an (le sigh) R rated Red Sonja project… I’ve been reading a lot of very early back and forth opining from the fans posting to the web… more boobs, more chainmail bikinis, supermodels! vs. real armor, less sex and more violence! But either side seems to be equally interested in that rating. I came across this sample from Gail Simone’s comics run which I liked a lot. Not sexploitative, still R-ish…

4. Beware the D-List! Apparently DC’s Powerless sitcom/comedy whatever show will feature many powered lower-tier characters. As this article posits, you have to work hard to out D-List shows like Flash right now, that feature King Shark and Gorilla Grodd. But the first out of the gate is apparently Crimson Frost. I feel like she was seen in JL: Europe or JLI maybe? That’s Bart Sears there, I think. Anyway, I’m all for it, especially if D-List doesn’t mean zero costume budget. That’s a surprisingly good interpretation of her for live action…
No word yet on if Marvel’s version of the similar concept will include powered folks in some capacity.

Alternate Universe Puddins and other things 7 Mar 2016

Image
This morning I woke up to an earthquake. Well, I thought it was. It turns out there was a global implosion of Harley fans reading these comments from Margot Robbie that they tried a million different Harley costumes before settling on the SS version, meaning those costumes exist, Margot Robbie slinked into them, and somewhere, somehow, there’s a multiversal world where she wore the Jester costume, or the Arkham one, or what have you.
[https://www.pinterest.com/pin/347199452496834467/ above]
http://geektyrant.com/news/harley-quinn … cide-squad
It’s like reading that that there were ‘dozens of alternate Slave Leia looks tried out, not only in New Hope but on Natalie Portman and Daisy Ridley too.

6. Negasonic Radness: Looking through these alternate designs for Negasonic was pretty cool. The first batch are closer to something they might cook up for Nicoru from Runaways… but the variations on her look in a proper X-uniform were cool. I really like that they mocked them up based on the actress’ own physique and dressed it up as if they were specific to her. You don’t see that often, with the concept art being done so far in advance. Production art like this is a refreshing change. I also didn’t even realize the costume was largely Josh Middleton’s New Mutants design.
Now I want to see alternates for Ajax and whatserface. They were suitably black leather neutral, because why WOULD they have costumes. But I’d still like to see what could have been…

Daredevil rules everything around me.
The Season 02 part 02 trailer just came out, and it’s the Elektra side of things… but also the HAND… and I’m just bowled over. The Punisher promise was enough for a season. Now this! Other projects I would fear too many villains, etc etc but here, I trust they’ve got the balance right.

1. Lucas Museum Heads to Oak- Wait No It Isnt: This was surprising bullshit even for bizjournal. All that happened was that the Lucas Museum project ran into opposition in Chicago and they trotted out the old ‘we’re talking to other cities MEH!’… and then a rep from a development organization in Oakland publicly dropped that they would love to host the museum. This is like when celebrities plant rumors of themselves being in the running for parts by just SAYING they are interest in interviews and talk shows enough times. But it’s Oakland, so it’s more like Sean Young showing up in a Target Catwoman costume. But let’s not forget that SF couldn’t get over it’s own fat head to allow this to happen in the Presidio organically as it should have.

4. That Chicken Fish: This is esoteric, even by our standards. Lung forwarded me this the other day and I popped in for a few minutes, confused as to why the guy looked so familiar. Now I’m sorted: Fishing with John is a surreal series hosted by John Lurie, who I finally realized I recognized from my second favorite Jim Jarmusch film, Down by Law (“Rosemary and OLIVEOILIA!”)… here, taking Tom Waits on an outing. 5. Four-Color Follies: I’m still not really on board with these DC properties on TV, though I want to try a few more of them… but between Legions of Tomorrow doing Quantum Leap with a who’s who of grade B heroes and villains, to Supergirl and Flash doing crossovers, to characters like Hellraiser living on even when their shows are cancelled… on other networks… I have to say, it’s a good time to be a DC fan, if you like this kind of stuff. I’ve been focusing on the Marvel shows so much, I haven’t really thought about how while the Marvel properties are playing it pretty low key with the imagery (costuming is muted for the TV version of the MCU) the DC side of things is veering on cosplay style fanservice for so much of the look and the content.

I mean… why the red at all? I was actually hoping that the reason they didn’t give him the straight up red costume was that they planed on introducing Elektra in the all red get-up. But now I don’t know… I mean, it will be 100% minimum awesome. This is clear. But still…

1. Marco DelFonso has produced a number of fanarts featuring Deadpool and Harley Quinn, which make sense on a surface level I guess, both of them being goofy, irreverent, bloody anti-hero types in their current incarnations. It got me thinking though: setting aside how Margot Robbie’s version will land in Suicide Squad, imagining a Harley solo film… would Miller’s Deadpool technique work for this character. I’ve never been fond of her cutesy, lovestruck, swooning cartoon Jersey thing, but take that away, and have her unhinged, looney, playful and sadistic… given the right plot circumstance (you know plot, right? Missing from Deadpool but they squeaked by on that film) I think the 4th wall component could really be interesting. 3,333 quips launched like area-affect weapons, not so much. The challenge would be that she’s a female character. I feel like even today, audiences are harder on female solo films regardless of format or context, and I can see a backlash on Harley done this way, even if it had happened before DP.

2. COSPLAY CHRIS does incredible rebuilds/repaints of figures. Lung turned me onto a few of the videos. This was my favorite. I’m in a FB group about figure customizations (3.5″) and it takes me back to my scratch-building lead miniature figure days…

3. Jeehyung Lee was featured on GT and AT recently, and going through the gallery, I saw a few I thought I’d share.

Image
Orc trophy something something… just thought her face and the technical detail of her legs and feet were amazing.

Image
HATE X-23 in Wolverine’s costume, but loved this view of it.

Image
Not happy about that hand… it’s something I would do and regret later, but great otherwise.

Image
I’ve drawn three or four big hoods lately, so I was sensitive to how cool this was, cropped short from being a full cape. Also, it was illustration no. 33, so.

Image
Chun-Li’s face, mostly.

4. Look, I’m not shy in saying it: I’m not overly into the MCU Scarlet Witch. I’ve liked Olsen in other roles, but I’m not yet warming to her here, and I think this is an example, a rare example, where there’s neither enough of the comic version, nor enough new redesign innovation, to pull me into this version of the character. I don’t think I need the kinky hair and gypsy stuff necessarily, but the design hasn’t felt fully baked yet. These images of her Cap3 costume aren’t yet winning me over. They read to me like those superhero costumes in TV series where they don’t want to fully commit, like what they used to do on shows like Smallville. Anyway, my eye sees a few changes that would make it more palatable. I think my problem here is matching the costume design to the actress for an overall effect. When I drew the AoU version last year, I was not drawing Olsen the actress, and frankly I liked the look of the design more in that instance. Looking at this refined version, I want changes, and maybe I’ll have time to sketch them out.

5. There’s a huge event coming in March, rocking the supers adaptation world to the core. I cannot wait!

Also, Batman V Whomever comes out…

Image
Speaking of, I haven’t really seen Cavill speaking his native accent since Henry VIII, so it’s kind of refreshing. He’s certainly more charming here than his stern Clark, his solemn eyebrow-cocked Superman, or his douchey Solo from UNCLE. Then again, that’s ACTING FOR YOU! And on the other hand, it’s challenging to a thespian to be told Batman can fly and has heat vision and they’d rather ride in a car than sit on your thigh in a helicopter or whatever.

6. Interesting factoids about whip spiders: blind, cuddly, and smell like cocoa puffs. Well, not the last part. They smell like pure Lovecraft.

7. Here’s a problem: being I suppose jaded and the project having no contextual clues whatsoever, I can’t tell if they are lampooning themselves or serious. But Natalie Portman wears a garter so thats all that will get posted on Buzzfeed.

Everything Old is New Again and other things 19 Feb 2016

Image
Welp, Geoff Johns posted another random ‘announcement video’ in which the camera occasionally cuts to a one third profile of his face, and very little information is provided. I’m sorry, maybe I am the cynic he suggests, but all I’m hearing is: ‘we rebooted the universe, then again, then changed too much and went back, then rebooted, then again, and now we’ve changed too much and are going back.’

1. Peter Mayhew has been posting pics from his old early SW New Hope draft scripts… with ominous hype hints at something coming. Something… ANNOUNCEMENTLIKE.

9. This just noticed by self: Deadpool #1 from 2015 sported a cover by Geoff Darrow!

Also, within, this happened…
Still can’t READ Deadpool. But wow. The cover!

Image
10. I still haven’t seen the show, but another neat thing I noticed about this cool costume they gave her: the pleated skirt has fold cuts so she can be really athletic and not be just flashing like crazy. Pretty savvy.
Edit: It might or it might not. I looked at a few pics. Maybe I’m wrong and it’s just a pleated skirt held down by like little weights, ha.
