The latest Cap trailer came out for thesuperbowls, and we saw many good things. New Ant-man costume. Bucky in stasis. And my favorite part: Stark grabbing a bullet.

7. These comments from George Miller about the collapse of JLI Mortal have been going around, and aren’t very interesting. However, I DO like this fan art. Sharp nosed Batman!

8. Bourne got its first official trailer during thesuperbowls, and I was thoroughly underwhelmed. Which is not to say I won’t love the film, just that, as a trailer, it did little for me other than annoy me with hyperbole ‘WE NEED THE PERFECT WEAPON!’….

Image
9. Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates… I didn’t know anything about this until the trailer was force fed to me by Youtube this morning. Interestingly, what I liked most about it wasn’t the gratuitous Aubry Plaza undie ass shots… but rather, that she continues to take on roles that are different, and interesting diversions, from her Parks character, which is something I wasn’t sure would be possible. Last week it was casting confirmation on X-Men: Legion, and now this. But even better, I’m enjoying the conceit here that the douchey guys are getting out-douched by the girls. Not a bad premise, for this sort of film, if they can pull the tone off right.

10. The Ant-Man movie could have been funnier, maybe, though I quite liked it. But this simple commercial pulled off several things:
1. Reminder of how interesting playing off Ant-Man’s size against normal, or particularly larger, characters could be.
2. More Spider-Man vibe THAN Spider-Man
3. Dextrous way of dealing with a sponsor/ad/product placement integration problem. The desirability of the product is implied, the characters remain reasonably on-model for their personalities, and the commercial uses their powers to great effect in the story. The attention to character specific detail… the craters under Ant-Man when he lands… Hulk fumbling with the pull tab…
not bad!

Image
11. TMNT 2… well, I’ve been vocal that I wasn’t pulled into the TMNT movie, though I didn’t particularly hate it either (except the noses… the noses)… it just felt like a generic Bay/Ratner style film… virtually visually indistinguishable from Transformers. That said, I like the cut of the sequel trailer’s jib quite a bit more. Feels more like the Turtles. I really like the curious proportions on Krang, I’ve seen the art for Bebop and Whomever (Kris mocks me about this on Robot-Kraken, that I can’t get the names right) and you know what, it works. Or it seems to.

12. Two Turkish Air spots from thesuperbowls feature fictional new route announcements to Gotham and Metropolis, which is fine. I wonder if there was one with Gal Gadot they pulled (recall they forced the takedown of those earlier photos of her on a TA flight) or if that’s from the film directly. Also, setting aside the fact that its jarring to see both characters pretending to fly commercial (and coach) what bugged me was the frequent and persistent presence of the ACE CHEMICAL neon sign. Yeah, yeah, we get it. What industrial chemical manufacturer needs a corporate tower int he heart of the business district?! Meh. Knowing movies, they even cook the chems there. On site. MEH! Ok, I’m done.

13. Daredevil S02 can’t come soon enough. However, the one weak link remains that armored costume. I keep saying: ‘just make it RED’. You’ve all heard me whine about. I whine about it frequently. But hey, here’s concept art showing how close they came to doing it right. GAH.

More scuttlebutt today about another villain in Rogue One that ‘will rival the Sith Lord himself’ (which we know is horseshit) and wears a white cape with a slit in it. Sound smore and more like Thrawn, and I sure as hell hope not.

A lot of stuff has been swirling about GoG Vol. 2 (great name, referencing the mix tapes)… will Ego the Living Planet be involved (seems plausible, knowing Gunn)… will Kurt Russell be Starlord’s daddy, and if so, as Starfox or Captain Mar-Vell or what? And of course, how will Gamora and her sister be on the same team, along with Vondu… but all i care about this point is seeing the mesmerizingly exotic looking Pom Klementieff in Mantis garb. I hope that’s what’s happening anyway…

Lastly, a lot is being made about Ike Permutter donating $1M to Trump’s faux-charity. People are calling for marvel boycotts. Let’s get real. It wasn’t a Marvel donation. Disney supports same sex rights and Marvel as a company have put out some great stuff with fairly diverse characters, in comics and film (even if Disney continues to fumble the toys+gender thing) so associating the company that makes product you enjoy, with the personal politics of their least popular yet crucial investor is pretty short-sighted. Boycott companies that produce products that kill children, or use profits to thwart civil rights and push hate agendas as corporate policy. Don’t use Perlmutter’s politics as an excuse to soapbox. He was already pretty vile. But he was a necessary evil to save that company, and frankly, there are worse offenders within a mile of you, I’d wager.

Decapitation by Thrown Lightsaber and other things 2/1/16

Image
1. Rogue One Roundup: Three different “sources” have indicated Vader will be kicking ass in this film. My favorite was the reference to a stunt variant for the costume design, to allow functionally more aggressive movement. I want to see this using of stormtroopers as human shields as well. Awesome!

More details about Forest Whitaker, including a composite costume/armor, a cane, possibly an old cyberleg… I love everything I’m hearing about this film. EVERYTHING…
http://geektyrant.com/news/rogue-one-a- … ter-emerge

…except perhaps a persistent rumor that General Thrawn will be pursuing the Ghost crew. I didn’t follow the EU, so I have no interest in a fan-favorite character emerging.

Image
2. These samurai themed redesigns of the Force Awakens characters fit right in with the beautiful samurai figures of the original characters from Japan (of which I have Boba Fett) and all were nicely done, though turning BB-8 into a Shiba was brilliant. Nikolas A. Draper-Ivey did them all.

Image
3. Captain Phasma will be back in Episode 8 according to Gwendoline Christie, surprising precisely zero people.
http://www.polygon.com/2016/2/1/1088547 … isode-viii

Image
4. This series of ‘Burtonesque’ Disney reimaginings by Andrew Tarusov I feel miss the mark. There’s more to Burton’s design aesthetic than darkness and stick limbs and bug eyes. These don’t feel right to me. Except for Pinnochio up top. THAT worked.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/dis … f?ir=Arts&

Image
5. EA claims the Battlefront game will stay within the Episode 4-6 range for ‘canon’ purposes… which smells wrong. I can understand purists don’t want to have Mace Windu and Captain Phasma fighting on Tattooine, but it’s a GAME. Story mode is one thing. Isolate characters based on certain maps or make context-specific maps and then free for all maps. Who is harmed? Not the franchise. I wonder if this is a bridge to them releasing an entirely different game around the new films. I can understand that I guess. But it’s interesting how arena gaming can be in conflict with the authenticity of story mode gaming. Also, I mean, I know the Jakku map they released was based on the unseen battle that occurred shortly after Endor, and not the Jakku of Force Awakens three decades later… but it’s an obvious marketing tie-in timed for the release of the film. So it’s something of an ingenuous statement, this canon business.

8. This just in: Frank Miller is grouchy about Elektra in Daredevil S02, sight unseen. Look, he’s notoriously dismissive of adaptations of Elektra, much like Alan Moore is of adaptations of anything. And to his credit, Marvel promised to keep her dead and then promptly revived her. But still, man, stop being Mean Uncle at the holiday party.

Unnecessary Hipster Scooby-Doo Redesigns 29 Jan 2016

Image
So DC is launching a series of ‘updated’ Hanna-Barbara action series comics adaptations. I’m most excited, creatively, about Space Ghost and Johnny Quest (the latter apparently being done by one of our favorites around here, Jake Parker) but man, how did Jim Lee manage to come up with THIS for Scooby Doo? That is a bulletproof original series design he’s messing with. My kids love a modern take on the series, animated in a style that is very referential to the original, which I thought was very well done. But here… it’s like his one goal was to try and squelch the rule34 situation on Velma. And even then, I’m sure it wouldn’t.

I’m famously optimistic and generous about a lot of these TV properties, and I’ve stuck by SHIELD (and even though the general public seems to feel it is at its best, I liked it more when it was HYDRA EVERYWHERE and prior to Inhumans, but anyway) and enjoyed it for what it is… and I actually LIKE the indirect references to the larger MCU. Like he said at one point in this video… doing 22 eps a season on 1/10th the budget while being forced to reference the films but not getting any major characters crossing over… and of course, it’s pretty well known that, particularly after the dustup between Fiege and Permutter, the sharing will only get more and more obtuse, with the latter being notoriously stingy with budgeting. But I like the characters and a lot of the concepts, and I LOVED the events surrounding the Hydra reveal and Agent Ward.

I’m only scratching the surface with Star Wars Battlefront, but EA is starting to step up with the DLC stuff. 6. Kevin Smith was another stealth Stormtrooper voice. Not really the reason I posted this. I was just reminded how mych I love how the Stormtroopers in this film have different roles and equipment. They used to, as well, certainly, but more so, this time. It feels that way. I mean plain old Stormtroopers (not the edited out black ones, or the snow troopers, or the old speeder bike scouts…) like here, with the tripod machine gun blaster thing. I have a box of figures I haven’t cracked that offers some of these. Certainly TR8TR is another example, though I did wonder why there would be riot control in a landing craft.

Gyrating Jawas and Other Things 26 Jan 2016

Image
Image
ITEM: So, I’ve watched parts of this hot mess like three times in the last few days, mostly in the process of trying to rickroll friends into watching it. Which doesn’t mean you shouldn’t watch it. You totally should. Otherwise, you’d miss Boba Fett doing a jaunty dance, Padme and her dear daddy Vader doing sexytime dances, and a writhing Slave Leia doing moves I]m surprised Disney authorized. This apparently came from one of the Disney parks. It’s so surreal seeing dancers doing a medley of pop dances in familiar SW costumes… it feels so weird and wrong. I’ve seen those old ones with Vader and Stormtroopers poplocking or whatever, but this one went way beyond. So weird.

The best part of the whole thing? The autotranslation of the blurb that accompanied the post:

ITEM: I have to say, and say, and say: why can’t we just have 95 minutes (not too many) of raging Batman raging hard against Superman. That’s all I want out of this movie. I LOVE how he PUNCtuates his STATEments with EMPHasis. Bad ass! Go Batfleck!
http://geektyrant.com/news/batman-and-s … -superman1

Image
Speaking of, I just saw on thefacebooks that someone screencapped a clip from the Batman Maybe Dream Sequence with Maybe Parademons that appears to show Darkseid’s omega symbol in the earthworks in the background. Assuming this wasn’t photochopped. I don’t remember this scene…

Update: better image:

Image
Also, new trailer is out with very little new content, favorably frankly, but what I thought was most amusing was that the first three times I tried to see it, it had been removed thanks to a copyright claim by Turkish Airlines. I wonder if this is an example of those copyright bots going nuts, even when it was legitimate use.

Oh, and by the way, supposedly WW is 5000 years old, and in ‘retirement’ due to being overwhelmed by man’s brutaility… which is an odd story point. It puts quite a different spin on the events of the WW solo film (that can’t be her first foray into the world during WWI then… this makes no sense)… but hey, Snyder, whatever.

ITEM: Another movie I had no interest in, and MAYYYYBE has elevated to Blu-Ray viewing status if nothing else: WoW. I love Duncan Jones, but I have soooo much fantasy movie fatigue. I didn’t even try and watch the Hobbits. But I DO like that we have a human/orc buddy cop situation happening here. Who will be the love interest they playfully compete over in between extended CGI violence encounters? Another species? I vote Drow. Do they have Drow in WoW?

ITEM: Today’s Rognarok rumor: the film will include Planet Hulk.. which I’m absolutely in favor of (not that I read those books or anything)…

Also, it’s all but confirmed that Hela will be the big bad in Ragnarok, which works for me.
