Gosh. When I saw ASM2, my bias against Field and my obsession-ish with Stone made me want sort of an inverse in their experiences.

3. The Evil-Lyn sculpt by these guys might be the best of the Masters of the Universe stuff yet. Lung specifically pointed me to the back tattoos, which is such a great detail. I’ve only seen this as a digital mockup in earlier production, so it’s neat to see the finished piece and the dark colors in the paint choices.

4. Well That Would Have Been a Joke: Had, you know, it been just one more thing crammed into this film. 5. Mquarrieness Sells: I LOVE the fact that the new films are drawing, so to speak, heavily from McQuarrie’s old concept art. It’s an excellent way to tie them together and feel part of a cohesive universe using similar design language, and it’s a nice nerd out element for production art fans.

6. Pliable Upskirts for Science: Lung and I were talking offline about how good Square Enix’s stuff is, and I was commenting on how the pliable material used to simulate fabrics and soft goods makes for increased poseability, such as dramatic superhero landings, and WW’s fighter crouch. Not fighter crotch. You’d be understandable in misreading that. Anyway, pretty great technology for figurines…

7. Insert Gravitas: Justin Lin’s ST may or may not be struggling, and they just added Shohreh Aghdashloo as a Federation bigwig. Now, late in the game major casting elements sound as fishy as hydrants in Nova Scotia, but it still could be a welcome course correction that will improve the production. We just don’t KNOW. Back in the day, prior to interweb spoilers and production details, we never knew about the behind the scenes drama unless discussed publicly later… easy to read too much into things today, and the spoilers and BTS reporting can sink an otherwise potentially good film. Hopefully this one will work out. Love her!

Anyway, when I learned the Amazon Tick series would be going forward, not just without Patrick Warburton, but the rest of the cast as well, I was nonplussed. Then I read Pfister may direct. 1. Well At Least There’s That: I don’t know if the first Lonely Island film, Popstar, will be funny. I can’t tell anymore. It doesn’t really feel funny. This is an example of the kind of feature that previously would have held no value for me, and now sounds amazing. The private access to my living room TV is quite limited, and the kids don’t get access to games at their age by my lovely wife’s request… and she’s watching shows most nights. So that all means that gaming for me is relegated to a night a week I set aside, after everyone is in bed. Now, if I want, I can hop on the PS4 from the Cloffice and have at it.

Sorry this is so massive, but you need to just soak in the details. By the far the best one in this series of unmasking solemn clips from the Civil War promos. The series makes extra sense when you think of the comics’ theme of identity registration specifically. We’ll see how it plays out on (glorious) film.

Image
1. Whats the Point Anyway: Supposedly Rian Johnson’s production will be less secretive about filming the next Star Wars film. I’m fine either way. I avoid spoilers if I want to, or I seek them out if I want to. Adulting on the interwebs!

2. Arrow Deflectors Maybe: On the heels of that blurb the other day about Bryan Singer supposedly working on an (le sigh) R rated Red Sonja project… I’ve been reading a lot of very early back and forth opining from the fans posting to the web… more boobs, more chainmail bikinis, supermodels! vs. real armor, less sex and more violence! But either side seems to be equally interested in that rating. I came across this sample from Gail Simone’s comics run which I liked a lot. Not sexploitative, still R-ish…

4. Beware the D-List! Apparently DC’s Powerless sitcom/comedy whatever show will feature many powered lower-tier characters. As this article posits, you have to work hard to out D-List shows like Flash right now, that feature King Shark and Gorilla Grodd. But the first out of the gate is apparently Crimson Frost. I feel like she was seen in JL: Europe or JLI maybe? That’s Bart Sears there, I think. Anyway, I’m all for it, especially if D-List doesn’t mean zero costume budget. That’s a surprisingly good interpretation of her for live action…
No word yet on if Marvel’s version of the similar concept will include powered folks in some capacity.

Alternate Universe Puddins and other things 7 Mar 2016

This morning I woke up to an earthquake. Well, I thought it was. It turns out there was a global implosion of Harley fans reading these comments from Margot Robbie that they tried a million different Harley costumes before settling on the SS version, meaning those costumes exist, Margot Robbie slinked into them, and somewhere, somehow, there’s a multiversal world where she wore the Jester costume, or the Arkham one, or what have you.

9. Beat Them With Their Own Shoes For a Mile: According to Frank Miller, whom I admittedly don’t often enjoy in his modern works, the original pitch for Batman: Year One, was so dark thanks to Darren Aronofsky’s input, that the studio panicked.

“It was the first time I worked on a Batman project with somebody whose vision of Batman was darker than mine. My Batman was too nice for him. We would argue about it, and I’d say, ‘Batman wouldn’t do that, he wouldn’t torture anybody,’ and so on. We hashed out a screenplay, and we were wonderfully compensated, but then Warner Bros. read it and said, ‘We don’t want to make this movie.’ The executive wanted to do a Batman he could take his kids to. And this wasn’t that. It didn’t have the toys in it. The Batmobile was just a tricked-out car. And Batman turned his back on his fortune to live a street life so he could know what people were going through. He built his own Batcave in an abandoned part of the subway. And he created Batman out of whole cloth to fight crime and a corrupt police force.”

I’d pay good coin for THAT.

There’s more in this interview…

Loved this quote: “nybody who thinks Batman was fascist should study their politics. The Dark Knight, if anything, would be a libertarian. The fascists tell people how to live. Batman just tells criminals to stop.”

It’s a good read. He’s surprisingly humble about his past mistakes and projects that did or didn’t live up to potential.

10. Excuse Me While I Move to the UK Right Quick: And in the best news of my day, The Aliens has been developed for E4 in Europe, and it looks like a spiritual sequel to Misfits.

4. That Took a Few Hours: We live in a wonderful age. Sure, we ave climate change deniers and genocide and systematic rape and plague and so on. But we ALSO have a great cultural moment around Lego… easy interweb access to so much cool Lego stuff, and homegrown kits and builds and such actually making it into (admittedly) nerd feeds. I love it.

6. Negasonic Radness: Looking through these alternate designs for Negasonic was pretty cool. The first batch are closer to something they might cook up for Nicoru from Runaways… but the variations on her look in a proper X-uniform were cool. I really like that they mocked them up based on the actress’ own physique and dressed it up as if they were specific to her. You don’t see that often, with the concept art being done so far in advance. Production art like this is a refreshing change. I also didn’t even realize the costume was largely Josh Middleton’s New Mutants design.
Now I want to see alternates for Ajax and whatserface. They were suitably black leather neutral, because why WOULD they have costumes. But I’d still like to see what could have been…
