Be Brave – Robots Root 24 September 2018

How to Draw with Tenacious D is killing me. “a little yeller.” “I don’t know what thats called, but it sure does tell a story.” Dying. NSFW. As usual, their viral marketing may be even better than the product (post-Apocalypto)… I will forever feel a compulsion to paint using a Sharpie as a brush.

Meanwhile, THIS:

  • I do kinda like this anime trailer treatment for the Star War. The ship designs feel jarring because they are very…western… but the character models and Ben Kenobi’s look and voice particularly, really work. Plus I’ve always said Chewie needed a prominent mustache.
  • RIP Sgt. Apone.

  • I can’t, for whatever reason, stop mulling over the concept for a Jon Hamm Batman. I want it. A LOT. I’ve often struggled by how much I didn’t vibe the Bruce Wayne as Batman look. I loved Nolan’s stuff, but it wasn’t the best Batman look, and Bale wasn’t the most Wayne Wayne. The project worked regardless. But thinking of my younger self’s mental image of what it should be… Batfleck (in costume) was close, even without the eye slits… but Hamm works for me as Wayne. Wayne in the bat suit, if that makes sense.

  • I can’t wait for this. I want it to be awesome. Funny that it’s going to be one of those seasons where John C O’Reilly is in bowler hats TWICE (this and the Laurel and Hardy biofilm)… one of THOSE seasons.

  • This piece came from an artist in one of my FB groups, and I love it 33,000 times. You may have to have grown up near, or beyond, the border to understand.

  • I dig these Sideshow ‘reimaginings’ projects. This makes for a damn cool and less bipedal Alien, (so many joints)… but Jonesy remains the highlight.
  • Thats not just Soundwave… it’s the ORIGINAL Soundwave, looks like.
  • Rope hands! That’s a power I need to add to the Posthuman game…

  • I think this was a pretty nuanced argument in favor of Last Jedi… touching on some points I hadn’t really formalized in my own mind. I liked it a lot, so i’m not one of the detractors… but Pat notes ways in which the film delivers on things that I think, big picture, really benefit the franchise.
  • THIS. “By 2022, science says we will have achieved Joker singularity: a Joker movie that reboots itself during the movie”
  • Brie Larson continues to troll those people that told her to smile more. It isn’t old yet.
  • This is only interesting because Sofia Boutella as any supers anyone gets my vote.
  • Chloe Zhao has been tapped to direct Eternals… we were just talking about Ruin on the podcast…

Finally, a new K-hole I didn’t know existed until now, and I’m obsessed: Hot Wheels restoration!

Legend Has it – Robots Root 15 June 2017

Black Panther rules everything around me.

In third place (because BP needed two), we have Robot’s Root for 9 June 2017:

  • Interesting that Blomkamp feels that Chappie is his most personal, best film, but that Elysium wasn’t that great. I felt the opposite.
  • I need more Stranger Things in my life. Immediately. Thessalhydra or not.
  • Ugh, American remake of Misfits. UGH.
  • An absolutely fascinating look at the true history behind Dr. Poison’s life mask in Wonder Woman.
  • Now YOU can own Bill Paxton’s armor from Aliens. I mean, how could you live without this.
  • All this recent talk from Chris Evans about signing on beyond his contract and how Infinity War would change the MCU etc etc: yes, we get it. Cap is getting assassinated.
  • I love how Ian McShane talks up Deadwood every 6 months and how it’s in HBO’s hands. I mean, YEAH, but still, I’d rather see actual progress on the project.
  • Useful.
  • Interesting that Olivia Munn isn’t yet signed up for the new X-Men film (she was woefully underutilized in the last one) but VERY interesting that supposedly Jessica Chastain is being courted for Lilandra of the Shi-ar. I LOVE THE CONCEPT.
  • Shioli Kutsuna has been cast in Deadpool 2. So many options here. Lady Deathstrike sounds like one, but given her Wolverine and X-Men pedigree, seems an odd choice.
  • Try to imagine John Lithgow as the Joker. I can. Wow.
  • Check out this rad Big Trouble in Little China project.

OK, go run your jewels, whils Kris and I prepare for Wizard World Sacramento!

This Just Happened: Arrested Development S05 and Other Things

Image

AD Season 5 is 99.99999% a Go! Or it’s not. But I think it is.
link!

Meanwhile, these happened:

– The Coen Brothers are venturing into TV, or at least a TV/film hybrid. I’m on board, and they haven’t even revealed anything about the subject matter. `link!

– On the one hand, I’m disappointed that the Lucas Museum’s final home is LA; SF REALLY BLEW IT ON THIS ONE. On the other hand, still accessible. link!

– Woody Harrelson is now officially on board Han Solo. What an interesting cast this is shaping up to be! I do wonder if he will be rotoscoped… link!

– Peter Dinklage circling the next two Avengers films? First: YES. Second: who? Puck? voice work for another character? I’m curious. link!

– I’m not sure there’s much HERE here, but supposedly the new X-Men TV Series in development will dovetail with the MCU. Which MCU: the fox X-Men stuff or the Marvel stuff? Doesn’t really work either way, but presumably will be like Agents of SHIELD and make references in one direction and then run with whatever. They are neck deep in a Jacosta/LMD storyline and just referenced Dr Strange in a subtle way. link!

– The OAV of Ghost in the Shell will have a theatrical release prior to the new film. Good call! link!

– James Gunn has a sweet Moon Knight film concept he says… but no time to do it. #GODDAMNCHARLIE link!

– BRB gotta build one for my bike real quick: link! ADIOS!

TWO WEEKS and other things 8 July 2016

I KNEW I recognized Varys from somewhere! ha

In other news…

Image
ITEM: Angourie Rice has been cast in Spider-Man: Homecoming, bringing the new total to 3,333 castmembers. She OWNED her scenes in Nice Guys, so I’m very pleasantly surprised by this revelation.

:::

Image
ITEM: Interesting bits coming out of the GitS production… Japanese actress cast as the Major’s mother, and another Japanese actress cast in a mysterious role… given how ambiguous the Major’s origin has been… is Scarjo playing an AI shell, a mission shell, or something else?
Also, love the show of support in the photo, given the pedigrees of all involved… Mamoru Oshii, Kenji Kamiyama, and composer Kenji Kawai…

Image
ITEM: Thor 3 production snippets are amusing, as one would expect involving this particular director.

:::

Image
ITEM: good cosplay is good. Lung spotted this one in a good roundup of recent con cosplay photos, and I have to agree, battle damaged Wolvie is AWESOME. Plus, look, they pulled off white eyes!

Image
ITEM: I keep failing in shutting down SS related stuff so close to release. From these photos, it looks like Joker actively applies proper lipstick, not just a smear of clown makeup. Also I admit I like a gussied up pre Harley Harley just fine. Also those head shots are great. Lots of good details, like the gator-dude’s face or Katana’s scar or that Boomerang has bruises and a cut lip.

It amuses me that each of these covers sports at least one person doing a shoulder/neck jig-jag…

ITEM: 80s cartoon nemeses as besties? I’m IN!
So many options on this one.
It feels like a G-rated version of Rule 34 pairings, somehow.

ITEM: Look, as you know, I’m three years behind in my reading (but catching up: I’m almost at Summer 2013!) but I’ve been doing my best to avoid spoilers for the Civil War II event. Of course, the mainstream press got involved, thanks to the movie, and I’ve read too much already, about deaths and such. This tidbit I don’t really think of as a spoiler, because the images are everywhere, and it’s sure to be a very short term headline-grabber. But hey, black teen Iron Man sounds fine to me, if we have a good story!

:::

Image
ITEM: Best news in a long time for a lot of folks, Aliens-wise… official-ish confirmation that films 3-4 are getting voided out of continuity.

ITEM: Another one we talked about in last night’s podcast recording, I’m reassured by this snap of Holland in the proper suit. So many questions…

ITEM: DC is getting on the smash-em-together 80’s nostalgia business, with a newly announced He-Man and Thundercats crossover comic. Those two properties actually work well together, I think.

2. SGs Will Fit but Only Creatively: Lung sent me this also. I’ve coveted the ‘petrol’ version, as they call it now, forever, but the electric one is hot shit! Even at whatever maybe $65K plus shipping after options, it’s appetizing.

4. The Super Kitchen Sink Approach: Jena Malone has apparently been cut from the theatrical version of Batman V Superman (she was rumored to play a female Robin) but…

According to EW:

“Furthermore, Malone’s secret character will be joined on the R-rated Ultimate Edition by even more secret cast additions, extended fight scenes and further hints to the future of the DCEU. ”

Hmmmmm…

Meanwhile, Bryan Singer has jumped on the R bandwagon with word of a Red Sonja remake because reasons. WB/DC announced a sequel to the unreleased Suicide Squad which will no doubt be R, because how could it not be. And then, just to remind you what it looks like when a studio has a long view plan, Marvel said:

6. Well, That’s One Less White Actor: Legendary Japanese actor Takeshi Kitano has been cast in Ghost in the Shell. Sure, this is a welcome step towards at the very least making the cast of this Japanese-rooted story more international… but I’m just stoked because he’s bad ass in general.

7. HAN SOLO BAH!: When you fork out too many credits for the Force Awakens Blu-Ray, you will witness, if nothing else (and there’s a lot else, I suspect) this three second clip of Kylo Ren storming the Falcon with some flametroopers (now THAT would have been a cool battle)…

According to GT those features include:

Secrets of The Force Awakens: A Cinematic Journey – For the first time, discover the complete story behind the making of The Force Awakens, revealed through in-depth footage and exclusive interviews with the actors and filmmakers in this feature documentary
The Story Awakens: The Table Read – Cast members familiar and new reflect on the memorable day they all first came together to read the movie’s script

9. Beat Them With Their Own Shoes For a Mile: According to Frank Miller, whom I admittedly don’t often enjoy in his modern works, the original pitch for Batman: Year One, was so dark thanks to Darren Aronofsky’s input, that the studio panicked.

“It was the first time I worked on a Batman project with somebody whose vision of Batman was darker than mine. My Batman was too nice for him. We would argue about it, and I’d say, ‘Batman wouldn’t do that, he wouldn’t torture anybody,’ and so on. We hashed out a screenplay, and we were wonderfully compensated, but then Warner Bros. read it and said, ‘We don’t want to make this movie.’ The executive wanted to do a Batman he could take his kids to. And this wasn’t that. It didn’t have the toys in it. The Batmobile was just a tricked-out car. And Batman turned his back on his fortune to live a street life so he could know what people were going through. He built his own Batcave in an abandoned part of the subway. And he created Batman out of whole cloth to fight crime and a corrupt police force.”

I’d pay good coin for THAT.

There’s more in this interview…

Loved this quote: “nybody who thinks Batman was fascist should study their politics. The Dark Knight, if anything, would be a libertarian. The fascists tell people how to live. Batman just tells criminals to stop.”

It’s a good read. He’s surprisingly humble about his past mistakes and projects that did or didn’t live up to potential.

Dark Knight Art Awesomes and other things 12 Feb 2016

Image
Found a new collection of poster style art recently, and this one I adored. So much so that I’ve made it the film’s cover art in my collection.

In other news…

So, this was an assumed temporary exercise, given the materials involved, but I wanted to play with protecting the surface of these devices from light scuffing and scratches, but not in any way assuming to be true protection, really just that and a bit of an aesthetic change. These matte vinyl sheets are options from the manufacturer, where all the other options are of course various graphic designs. They are designed to cover a certain amount of the surface, but not completely conceal the aluminum casing. I like the one for the MBP because it stops short of the edges. The one for the iPad Pro wraps around and tries to fit the buttons and such, and it’s impossible to get lined up just so. As a result, I have one edge where the vinyl is juuuuuust close enough to the plane of the screen to allow it to lift up when you are holding it with your hand. So that’s impossibly aggravating, and I’m sure I will be Xacto’ing that down soon. The other annoyance on large sheets of vinyl, just like when applying screen protectors to phones, is that in some cases you cant get rid of the air bubbles. On vehicle vinyl wrap they use a heat wrap to ease fitment. Not ideal with electronics. Anyway, if nothing else, you have to appreciate my white vinyl appliques on top of these. I’m using this setting for the devices in my network at the moment. Everything is named after different vehicles, companies, etc from the Aliens universe. Because reasons.

Image
So SW8 has officially begun filming, which is exciting. I know we’re already seeng SW fatigue among some mainstream fan quarters, but not this guy. I especially appreciate the sequencing approach they took, inserting the side films in between the main ones so we don’t have such a wait between SW franchise films. Pretty great!

This is a First Order TIE Fighter I’ve been building with the kids. It has been somewhat delayed because my son took the inner core of the ship and added a bunch of doodads and made it into a jetspeeder bike, so I’m waiting for him to lose interest so we can resume.

Image
I don’t have time to read. It’s killing me. I’m working, drawing, raising kids, doing house improvements, trying to get riding in, etc. and it’s been a thing. I made a point of setting some time aside each week to sit down and do some real, physical media reading, trying to put a dent in my tall stack of books in the queue… but as an aside, I’m still three years behind on my comics reading. This is untenable. It’s so bad that Marvel and DC have relaunched their universes, and then are relaunching them AGAIN, and I’m still two universes back.

I love the concept of sale pricing on wonky vegetables. Especially if they are called wonky vegetables. We tend to buy organic produce and that is invariably smaller, lumpier, less picture perfect than the engineered stuff. But I like the idea that they aren’t just tossing the three legged carrots and the like. Personally, I go AFTER the weird ones. I like heirloom tomatoes because they like Akira act 3 half the time…

Image
BW Wong has been cast as Batman villain Hugo Strange. This is yet one more case where Gotham can’t wrap their head (the show’s head?) around a world without Batman… but anyway, it’s if nothing else an interesting casting decision. I loved him on Law and Order for years.

That’s all for today, my Krakenites. Sink some ships this weekend!
