Kellys Got My Number – Robots Root 16 January 2018

Look, I haven’t seen ANY of the Ash vs. Evil Dead series, but this photo of a character called Kelly, played by Dana DeLorenzo, sold me.

Meanwhile, some Robot’s Root… as we prepare to prepare for Heroes and Villains Fanfest / Walker Stalker Con…

  • Surprising precisely no one, Krypton looks like garbage.
  • More Altered Carbon, this time a full trailer. I did not expect the man out of time situation.
  • Another day, another Director defection from Gambit. This, just as Fox released the schedule for the upcoming supers films in active development. It’s still pretty strange that Fox is putting Deadpool 2 within two weeks of Han Solo. Even if the negotiations for final contract on the merger/sale are going to take years, you’d think they’d already be moving these projects a bit farther apart…
  • Natalie Portman just hopped onto Pale Blue Dot, replacing Reese Witherspoon who remains producer. I love ‘affected-astronaut’ stories. They sort of remind me of the ‘haunted sailor’ thing from the 1700s-1800s…
  • Duncan Jones’ Mute hits Netflix next month, along with Altered Carbon. I’m never leaving the house. Except for when I leave the house.
  • It’s early yet, so I’ll be convinced when it’s officially greenlit, but the Black Widow film has been assigned a screenwriter, which is 100% more than they’ve done on this project so far. And, while I would prefer an espionage film similar in tone to Winter Soldier, it sounds like it might be a Lady Liberators situation.
  • I watched the entire thing with Maisie Williams on the show, and it was delightful.
  • They Were Never Here looks AAAAAMAZING
  • I missed the window on this, but be advised:
  • A Shane Black Avengers (60s version?) YES PLEASE.
  • More optimistic talk about the Deadwood film… which I’ll totally accept as fact at this point, because I NEED it.
  • I sold a few prints of Superman: Red Son this weekend, probably a little bit driven by this news
  • Ridley Scott’s The Terror series on AMC feels tailor-made for me. 1800s arctic naval suspense thriller with monster stalkery? YES.
  • These are amazing: Desktop dumpsters, sized for magazines and thereabouts. Ready for your graffiti skills. Or skillz, if you are young (or too old)… and while we’re at it, I also need a Vestaboard, THANKS.

We’re recovering from Heroes and Villains Fanfest/ Walker Stalker Con, but more to follow, including a show roundup…

Short Tunic and a Loooooooooong Cape – Robots Root 31 Oct 2017

Robots Root, 64 oz size!

  • Kind of obvious, but I was stoked to see D’Onofrio officially on board in DD S03, especially given the kind of underwhelming, if classic, Born Again plotline. It gives me at LEAST a Kingpin to enjoy.
  • If Gareth Evans does indeed sign on to Deathstroke, that means if nothing else a kick ass fight film. Which seems appropriate.
  • The full Runaways trailer shows some powers, familiar looks, and at least do far isn’t ruining any major surprises comic fans would know.
  • The new Justice League trailer shows Steppenwolf more fully. I wasn’t going to watch, then I realized I’d be overseas when it comes out so things will be spoiled anyway…
  • Um. I mean, I’d still buy one. I love that stuff. But hey, bonuses I guess.
  • Zachary Levi has been confirmed as playing Captain Marvel, I mean SHAZAM I guess at this point, which I’m enjoying. I like the actor, and I think he can bulk up to where it needs to be, as John Krasinski and Chris Prat did. It will be interesting to see if we get a young Billy Batson, or an older one in keeping with the apparent continuity of the DCEU. My favorite of the fan art that came out early this week is above.
  • I don’t watch Supergirl or any of the CW super shows… but wow… check out the costume for new villain ‘Reign’… that’s realllllly badly envisioned. A chattering skull in a super sigil logo on a black version of Supergirl’s costume, plus a Hot Topic mask? GUH.
  • Paramount has been auctioning off costumes and props from the recent Star Trek film. I haven’t talked mush about ST: Discovery yet, as I’m waiting for my cohorts to watch it so we can discuss on the podcast, but one positive, at least in part, has been the overhaul of the Klingon designs. Seeing these Klingon armors, especially the helms, makes me even happier with the show.
  • Best bike-based Star Wars styled Halloween costume anything EVER.
  • This R/C Batmobile is BAD ASS. I still prefer the Tumbler, but hot damn, rotating turrets (for murderdeathkill DCEU Batman!) 24″ of pure powah.
  • He was answering more broadly about his willingness to return to Marvel for another film, not specifically a Black Widow film, but Taika Waititi noted he’d like to see a funny Black Widow. I don’t doubt he’d pull it off, one of those ‘she’s the straight face with lots of eye rolling and groaning at the incompetence of everyone else’ type projects… but I still just want my urgent spy thriller.
  • Speaking of, Olivia Munn has been cast in Hummingbird, which is, you know, that.
  • And here’s the opposite of Olivia Munn, Mads Mikkelsen in Polar. Also awesome. WANT!
  • I forgot to mention this after retweeting it on Twitter… because thats what the cool kids do… but Preacher has been greenlit for S03, which is great news.
  • Our review and discussion (and befuddlement at trying to map out the plotline after seeing it in the middle of the night) of Blade Runner 2049 is forthcoming on the podcast, but this was interesting: they considered making it a two part 4 hour film. There is a definite divide in the narrative, indeed each half begins with the eye, etc. I’m glad they took it the direction they did, though.
  • This is the stuff of superhero or paranormal or alien film prologues…
  • Finally, here’s a Stranger Things candle that I love highly.

Happy Halloween y’all! Enjoy your syringes and bath salts and Charleston Chews!

Ah Said No Peekin – Robots Root 30 May 2017

Last night we completed another session of the Robot-Kraken Podcast recordings for inclusion in the June episode. Special guests! Special liquors! Hot messes!

In the meantime, however, this is Robot’s Root for 30 May 2017:

  • I was talking with One Lung this morning (or typing) about films we’re looking forward to, beyond all the obvious marquee stuff coming out, and that led me back to trailers. So here, have some, for science:  Trailer 1: Baby Driver
  • Trailer 2: Logan Lucky. “ah said no PEEKIN!”
  • Trailer 3: Hitman’s Bodyguard
  • BONUS: Shimmer Lake on Netflix. IN!
  • This supposed brief on the new Silver and Black disaster-in-waiting Sony is cooking up for their Spider-Man Universe Without Marvel or Spider-Man or Something sounds sketchy. Like fanfic stuff.
  • Surprising precisely no one, SW VIII has been postponed while they violently rewrite the entire thing.
  • First look at Lockjaw from Inhumans: yep, giant bulldog. Missing the signature tuning fork and collar though, which is weird. So many weird choices on this project. I still haven’t recovered from the wig.
  • A little less than a month to go and we’ll have new Preacher. YASS.
  • In another (rather odd) example of studios remaking instead of building anew, Amazon just bought a series based on the film Hannah which (I haven’t seen, actually) I hear is based on every other young teen orphan assassin trope. Not that I don’t want to see the film. But I’d rather see original content greenlit.
  • The thicken plots… possibly… now they are admitting Joss Whedon has been quietly working on JL for awhile. This could be a sign that they knew and were planning to transition Snyder stepping down on a schedule, OR that he was already on board for script/shooting corrections. I do think it’s no coincidence that he was randomly announced as the writer/director of Batgirl this spring…
  • I’m half-way through the current glorious season of Silicon Valley, and I can’t conceive of the next season moving forward without TJ Miller. Dammit.
  • Really odd one here: Rosario Dawson is supposedly being courted for the role of Dr. Ceclia Reyes in the New Mutants film. It feels… fan speculationish… given that she’s already in the Marvel Universe (one of them) as a nurse… but hey, +1 always works for me.

And with that, I’m off to see if I can scrape some of this rum off of the inside of my cranial cavity…

Robots Root – 6 April 2017

Above, let’s take a moment to relish Keron Grant’s Gotham City Garage design as executed in this statue. The badass pose, the ink, the translucent bike farings… I mean… I look at this often for inspiration. Gorgeous.

On to Robot’s Root for 6 April 2017

Meanwhile, out there, these:

  • Trip out: One of Ridley Scott’s proposed endings for Alien involved Ripley being facepunched and then the xenomorph, via tentacle(?) using her com panel perfectly mimicking a human voice. I mean. I love it.
  • I know it’s not super cool to be buzzing about the Defenders right now, but that’s how the backlash works. This weird viral teaser involves the team looking wiped out in an elevator… there’s a URL that gets you into interesting territory involved, and it reveals the launch date for the series… but all i can focus on is Matt Murdock’s headpiece. I get it: no one else has a secret identity, but this is the Netflix equivalent of the old ‘spare FF costume’ thing in the 80s when Peter Parker, after ditching the symbiote costume at the Baxter Building (maybe? It’s hazy) left the building in a spare FF jumpsuit minus gloves and boots, and wearing a paper bag on his head. It was surreal. He couldn’t just leave the building in some of Johnny Storm’s spare clothes as Parker?? Like through the lobby? I remember thinking: TOO MUCH DRUG U GUISE. Anyway, there you go. No one would recognize Murdock’s suit I guess. Or rather, ask the basic questions. But whatever, still into it. See you in August.
  • Welp, Rainn Wilson has signed onto the new ST series as… Mudd… so that’s a thing that’s happening.
  • Uh, Marvel’s VP is stepping into it… and then, maybe 24 hours later, two ‘diversity’ titles got Hugos. Nice.
  • Justin Theroux and Tom Hardy supposedly in SW VIII works for me. Entirely works.
  • Give that Mouse laptop company from Japan some due credit: good ad agency. Number one good.
  • Um WHUT. But Yeah Preacher S02, can’t come soon enough.

Lung sent me this poster at like 6am and it was glorious. Interesting that Mantis isn’t on here, but I love everything I see about Yondu’s new cyber-mohawk.

Image
Plus this sneak peak got me all fired up. Again, Yondu is the standout for me, though I see approximately 33,000 other details I enjoy.

Meanwhile…

ITEM: This trailer for Planet Earth II from BBC is amazing. Aside for my love of foxes, it was really emotional to watch it, at least for me personally. I think in my headspace I’m feeling closer to death and have more interest in the diversity of life trying to raise two animals of my own (with two more watching)…

“I don’t even understand me.”
ITEM: I haven’t gotten around to finishing my Preacher S01 review, but love love love on this blooper reel.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: And this isn’t even the HOT one. I tole my buddy a few months ago that if I ate a Creeper I think I would chestburst. But instead of an alien, it would be my wasted opportunities in life. Just blown against the wall.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: I know this whole thing was a gag, but as maybe the only Ana Kendrick fan over here, I enjoyed it. PUT DOWN THAT SCHOOLBUS!

Image
ITEM: Finally, here’s the first look at old man toleyou.

The Carol Danvers we Need – 26 July 2016

Brie Larson finally confirmed as Captain Marvel at SDCC, world gets .00003% better. I’m on board!

While I hope to see a film-based design that takes the foundation of this uniform and tweaks it for the screen, rather than a direct adaptation, this is going to be rad. The early photomanips of her in costume from a few months back were unflattering and awkward. I like this one better.

Meanwhile… mostly from SDCC…

ITEM: In other not-news-to-anyone-paying-attention news, they confirmed Kurt Russell for Starlord’s father in GotG2… however, what WAS news, and frankly, a bad ass idea, was the reveal that he isn’t any of the iterations from the comics that were boring. He’s decidedly not boring. He’s EGO THE LIVING FUCKING PLANET. Refresher on WTF:

Image
Though, I will say, drab outfit for a god-celestial-body. First Mordo and now this.
Fear not color, this be Marvel!

Less appealing: Sly Stallone was also confirmed.

ITEM: People seem upset about Killing Joke. I mean, more upset than when the book came out and Batgirl was critically assaulted. We forget that, in this girlfriends-in-fridges era. Anyway, people are upset because: the animation doesn’t look consistent with the comic, the story has been changed… and now, apparently because, in an attempt to recover some interest in the production, DC had a panel at SDCC and revealed that… Batgirl is a violence fetishist and is (trying to) do the sweet hook-ups. OUTRAGE! Ha

ITEM: My man Aiden Gillen is tapped to play a veteran spy in a new BBC series based on John Le Carré’s ‘The Spy Who Came in from the Cold’. I’m stoked! Can’t wait to see it…

ITEM: The Saint of Killers is coming to Preacher (current day, anyway) FINALLY… although maybe this happened Sunday, not sure, I stream, I’ve been gone, what can I tole you. Still.
RAD!

ITEM: More info on Black Panther…
“Michael B. Jordan will be playing T’Challa’s archenemesis Erik Killmonger, the genius insurgent who’s destabilized Wakanda multiple times in the comics. Nyong’o will be playing the role of Nakia, a member of of the Dora Milaje, Wakanda’s all-female honor guard. Danai Gurira—who plays Michonne on The Walking Dead tv show—will be embodying the character of Okoye, described as the leader of the Dora Milaje.”

How dope is it to see all the diverse casting on stage all at once in some of those Hall H photos? Different ethnicities and genders all over the place. Since I’m not a Nazi, I love it!

ITEM: I’m the first to admit I was heavily disinterested in the Legion series… I don’t like the character, don’t like what this network does to interesting programming, don’t like hearing that it appears to be completely divorced from any other MCU or MTVU continuity… but let me tell you, seeing the trailer? I’m on board.

Image
ITEM: Probably the most interesting thing to come out of the Spider-Man: Homecoming panel was seeing concept art of Vulture.
http://io9.gizmodo.com/weve-seen-the-fi … 1784197623

:::

Image
ITEM: STILL down with Doctor Strange. Even MORE down. Love what I’m seeing in the trailer. Love what I’m seeing of the cast. Love the running on waves of buildings. Love everything.
http://io9.gizmodo.com/the-second-docto … 1784197511

Image
Random detail I LOVE: how his cape flicks up and sort clamps on, magically. Subtle reference to the power he uses being second nature at that point. Like when he’s floating around or sitting in mid-air in the comics.

That’s all from the weekend. And now, whisky for breakfast.

All the Irish Vampirism You Could Ever Want – 29 June 2016

YAY Preacher is renewed for S02. I’m only one episode in, but I plan on loving the hell out of this project.

I don’t want to tread in body shaming controversy waters here (so to speak), but I’m with the apparently minority dissenting opinion, that he isn’t a negative stereotype of Polynesian male bodies, but a cartoon character. Here’s a film where we get another non-white ‘princess’ who happens to not even be emaciated, and this is where the controversy suddenly shifts? My word.

Abraham Attah has been seen in high school garb wandering around in early shooting for SM:Homecoming, and of course everyone has jumped on the Miles Morales thing. I’m kind of hoping not. I love that character, but I’m begging, BEGGING, for this to be a simpler, tighter kind of film. We’ll see. It DOES ave like 33 villains already and a dubious costume.

What dubious costume you ask? These photos came out last night and we talked about them in the Robot-Kraken podcast we were recording soon thereafter. I called it Spider Garters. I mean, what is even. What is EVEN. Everything about this is confusing, coming off of the sweet design in Civil War.

This was an interesting story from last week: in an interview, Affleck seemed to suggest he turned down the hot seat for Force Awakens. I’m very happy with that film, but I have to wonder if he’s nervous about hitching to the wrong train, as far as directing goes. If his Batman kicks ass, it will be a triumphant counter to the negative stigma of BVS (in which he wasn’t even producing, let alone directing) but if not…
