Robot-Kraken Episode 048 – Late- October 2018 “Mimic Bears and Awkward Stares“

Your regular host Thom ‘Third Rail Design Lab’ Chiaramonte is joined by guest host Blake ‘Begin Again’ Simmons to review and discuss Annihilation, as well as current entertainment news of the day.

ROBOT KRAKEN is a MONTHLY podcast by two indie artists, Kristopher McClanahan of Deeply Dapper and Thom Chiaramonte of the Third Rail Design Lab. We get together and talk about comics, movies, working the table at comic cons, life in this nerdy wonderland, and whatever mumblings from the deep we come across. You can find out more about us, contact us or follow along our journey at robot-kraken.com

And Lo, the Details!~

Sucking the Monkey: What we consumed during the thing…

  • Blake: Lime LeCroix and Butterfield Station Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Thom: Kraken Rum and Coke (flat, unacceptable)

Red Sky Roundup: News of the moment – for more detail, see Robot’s Root on robot-kraken.com!

  • Predator and the predator thereon
  • Captain Marvel Trailer
  • Bond 25
  • Taika Waititi and Bryce Dallas Howard onboard The Mandalorian

Robot Review: Annihilation

And yes, the score was Ben Salisbury and Geoff Barrow, not Johann Johansson. But still, I was close.

Planned Plundering:

  • Blake: Glass, Daredevil S03, Expanse
  • Thom: Blade Runner/ Blade Runner 2049 double-feature, Iron Fist S02, Preacher

Rum-Fueled Recommendations:

  • Blake: Hereditary, Tropic Thunder Director’s Cut
  • Thom: Mission Impossible, Iron Fist S02

Please enjoy, hell yes!

Also, you may imagine to yourself that we are applying ‘Born Again’ to Blake… you may even hallucinate and think he did it to himself. I promise you… it’s you, not us. It never happened.

Boba Fett? WHERE?! – Robots Root 26 October 2018

When the Mandalorian was announced, I thought I could just make out the distant din of the death drums for the Boba Fett film. And so!

ROOT!

  • The latest in the list of films that should not be remade… has an apparent script
  • Brad Pitt as Rasputin? Rachel Weisz as anyone? This Kingsman prequel sounds better than I had ever imagined possible. Which was a low bar, admittedly.
  • This Jimmy Kimmel/Avengers comic took me back to reading those from my youth, like Letterman (the homage) and similar ones. Trippy to see it in a contemporary setting, as it looks so tacky today. I mean, it coasts on the homage, which is at least something, I guess. I’m not one who likes the dips into reality in comics. The Presidents that are obvious references to the real world, or even the 9-11 tie-ins…(grouchy, I know)
  • This Mulan art show has some pretty great projects. Check em out!
  • Alexander Skarsgard has joined Godzilla vs. King Kong, so thats a thing. I’ve lost track. Is this AFTER Planet Kong or Deathmatch of Monsters 3000 or whatever it is? Millie Bobby Brown is in the cast, so that’s what threw me. Same film? Different film?  Who knows. How could we possibly ever know.
  • I can’t believe it took THIS long, but here’s a Gundam kit with a robotics pack. Love it. Where was S.T.E.M. when I was a kid dammit tole.
  • This was kind of a surprise: they found more material from Ray Harryhausen, and are parlaying that into a new film. Of course, it appears to be all of his Grade Echhh material.
  • Cool article on ‘the Monsters of Climate Change‘… I never noticed that Annihilation’s Mimic Bear had a human skull fused up in there! (More on that in our latest Robot-Kraken Podcast!)
  • I’m intrigued by the Big Kill… I mean, it looks like a multiplayer RPG set in the Old West. Hilarious.
  • The Big Lebowski will never not exist. We at least have THAT.

That’s all for tonight. It’s not too early to get your HAL 9000 Xmas Ornament. I’m already on it, cousins.

Haileys and Bumblebees – Robots Root 3 Jan 2018

The only three things I can find to be positive about Bumblebee: The Damn Movie are, in no particular order:

  1. No Michael Bay
  2. Bumblebee is a Bug FFS
  3. Hailey Steinfeld

Maybe that WAS the right order.

Robot’s Root!

  • This comparison between Force Awakens and the Knights of the Old Republic storyline was pretty good. Had I any knowledge of the latter, maybe I would have detected some of this. Or not.
  • Every time Neil Blomkamp posts concept art from his axe-murdered Alien 5 treatment, I get frustrated.
  • I know this isn’t the most popular opinion, but I for one would want to see those extra hours of Blade Runner 2049… speaking of which, Ridley Scott’s elder man ego is spinning out… these comments are nuts.
  • This quote from Guillermo del Toro was amusing mostly because he criticized the design. I feel him.
  • Rian Johnson is supposedly set to begin filming scenes for the new trilogy in 2018… without a script, or even a stated concept… so at most, I hope it’s establishing shot set pieces… I mean, a road is nice. I like roads.
  • The most obvious conclusion reached from the linkbait comments that ‘Thor will undergo a dramatic transformation in Infinity Tole’ is a loss of an arm, as per the comics some years back… I’d like to see Thanos rip a Thor arm off…
  • new octopus alert. ALERT!
  • Hailey Steinfeld wants to be Joss Whedon’s Batgirl, if these misleading interview comments are to be believed. I would not mind. She’s fit, athletic, has a great expressive face, and has been acting since she was a wee one (remember True Grit? Long before the pop singer phase)… I had a different fantasy casting for this role, but maybe we’ll get to that sometime in 2018 on the podcast if a couple of other rubes get their shit together…
  • On the heels of the failed Dark Universe, Paramount is hurtling forward with the Hasbroverse, announcing dates for GI Joe, Micronauts and others… despite not having scripts or a plan. Sounds about right. Dungeons and Dragons AGAIN. Guh.
  • Here’s an interview with Neal Scanlan about creature work on TLJ… if you are into that sort of thing, which I am…
  • I still can’t even with this fever dream. It might be great. Mortal Engines…
  • I have an intense need to clean up and sort this mess… while eating THIS, of course.
  • Lung and I traded finds in this vein… this was my favorite of the Star Wars ones. Still looking for the perfect Deckard one.
  • Mark L Smith has been tasked as writer for Tarantino’s Star Trek film… I mean… someone rubbed a lamp somewhere right?
  • I enjoy radical fan theories where the main character is dead. Works with almost any movie.
  • Would Darkseid have helped or hurt Justice League? I think, as Kevin Smith described it, it would have made an effective tether for the next film.
  • Great honest trailer about Return of the Toleyou… except for the grating mispronunciation of Maori…
  • The new Annihilation trailer is already showing too much. I’m on blackout. But I can’t wait.
  • They do look pretty New Mutanty… love the Lockheed puppet…
  • Cloverfield 3 comes out in April… but with no name yet and no promos. Which is fine. They played it fast and loose with the last “sequel”… I’m still on board, ESPECIALLY if it is indeed space based as rumored. The cast alone!
  • True Detective S03 is shaping up to be pretty exciting to this guy: three time periods, the Ozarks, now Dorff joins Ali? Damn

That’s all for today. Back to cooking them Porgs…
