Get this Man a Facet Tool – Robots Root 11 May 2018

Disappointed at the lack of attribution, but this is my current desktop, and I used it in our latest Robot-Kraken Podcast. So good.

  • Looking forward to American Animals, as one does.
  • I’m 100% on board with whatever regarding Birds of Prey, honestly.
  • Thinking about the future of the franchise, what ‘big event’ could replace Avengers movies? I think this is a maguffin, because the narrative had bled into other films already, such as the last two most amazing Captain America films. I was thinking about this last night. Maybe ‘Secret Wars’? Not the stitched-together battle planet, but rather the idea that the heroes and villains would be shunted into an environment forcing them to organize and fight their way out. I can see this fusing concepts from the original Secret Wars, Champions, and frankly, a good dose of what we got from Thunderbolts and Exiles: versions of characters pulled from the multiverse. Makes sense to this guy!
  • This is HIGH TREASON.
  • Donald Glover got wonderfully weird on SNL. But this novelization of the backstory of Lando is even weirder.
  • Captain Marvel already has a very intriguing cast… but they just added Annette Bening, and I’m even more intrigued.
  • Look: I’m horrified by the project, but I LOOOOVE her honesty. Legit.
  • Ron Howard + Arrested Development + Star Wars. Gold! Marketing at its best.
  • Listen, I have too much stuff, and I’m trying to get less stuff. But I’m really having trouble resisting this.
  • TAKE MY MONEY (that I don’t have)
  • I haven’t finished Clone Wars and haven’t started Rebels (kids too young) but this is very interesting to me, stylistically.
  • Everything about this. EVERYTHING. Thanks to C Ferrren for finding it…
  • Jon Favreau’s new SW series will take place during the first years of peace in the New Republic. Interesting territory for the show, I think.
  • While I understand WHY Syfy is dropping the Expanse (bad deal they made) I will just say that this better get picked up by Netflix, fast.
  • Here’s that teaser for Predator that came out yesterday. Optimism abounds, more on Kris’ side than mine. But still, love the cast. Here’s a snap of the current Predator design, in all of it’s sizzlechest, tall headed glory.
  • All the behind the scenes business is done, and Rick and Morty will be back for… 70 EPISODES… FFS that’s good news.
  • 355 is an all-female spy thriller, which is 100% better news than whatever was happening the day before it was revealed to be happening. The cast.
  • LEGO car building factory awesomeness…

And with that, a reminder to listen to our latest episode of Robot-Kraken, and in general, you know, fear not and be just…

Mount The Curb – Robots Root 9 May 2018

This is what the internet is for. STOP LYING, BATMAN.

Meanwhile.

  • I cant make heads or tails of what’s going on with TJ Miller’s implosion, but he won’t be in Deadpool 3, apparently. I do miss his energy in Silicon Valley, though. Not talking about behind the scenes value, just the finished products…
  • I’d be down with an all female Knights of Ren. This is like the rumored post-Avengers all-female supers team-up. You don’t even have to market it that overtly. Just DO it. Such as with Annihilation.
  • Let me just day, for the 333th time: I want a Bucky Barnes Cap. I mean, i NEEDS it. It was great in the comics.
  • So here’s the magical photo full of unicorn sparkles that apparently convinced Snyder to cast Cavill as Superman. And it’s… yeah… well, maybe I’m biased by how bulked he was later, but this isn’t thrilling.
  • I didn’t watch this AD S05 trailer, as I’m just going to dive right in and watch the show directly… but here you go.
  • The amount of misdirection in the Avengers: Infinity War trailers was peak. It does beg the question of how are they going to market the 4th Avengers movie… I’m of the mind they have all the actors do promo and press anyway, because come on… just don’t tell us HOW they come back. It’s like that hot mess of Superman/no Superman in the JL ads.
  • Super into what I’m seeing of Luke Cage S02. TOO much charisma. “They have to know we tried.”
  • As if the Infinity War situation couldn’t get more brutal.
  • Black Widow has gone through some hyperbolic number of director interviews, according to the supernet, so it must be true. More important subtext is the concept that they are looking for the right voice, not JUST an indie, or female, or controversial, voice. Hopefully, though, all those things in the end.
  • Sherlock Holmes 3 is coming, and I’m delighted.
  • It will be interesting to see how the original Wasp suit looks in motion. That helmet and the coat design were always something that barely made sense even in the comics.
  • Good to hear that Artemis actually has some old-school bite to it. The trailers were cut so as to look like every other post-John Wick project. Neat to hear it’s more 80s action movie…
  • Beautiful Last Starfighter art…
  • GUISE: MUTATIONS! ALIENS! DEATH FROM DUST! I mean, not like we ever went to the moon, but still.

OK, go to itunes now and check out or latest podcast which was released yesterday: Black Panther, Jumanji, insouciance…

And Thats Why You Always Leave a Note – Robots Root 03 May 2018

This was pretty inspired Han Solo marketing.

Meanwhile, this happened:

  • This was ALSO pretty good, for different reasons. A CAPE ROOM.
  • I cannot EVEN with this film.
  • WELP (Avengers: Infinity War spoilerish)
  • “John Wick uses the service industry to stay alive.”  … I’m picturing him eating for free before his shifts and being super down with the daily special objective opinions…
  • SJ Clarkson is directing the next ST film: notable for being a breach of the white male club, and also because, directly related, she’s not QT.
  • It’s getting to the point that the virals are as interesting as the films. I love that Jackman was on board. Now, Celine Dion was a bit much…
  • How dope nerd is Winston Duke that he misidentifies Whiplash as the more obscure X-Men villain Omega Red?
  • If you want to see Samuel L Jackson look slightly younger and with two eyes and a tight curl, well, you’re in luck. No need to get the DVDs out.
  • This could be one of the more tweaky easter eggs in Avengers. I mean, for the AD fan… even knowing about something being in the film, in advance, I still didnt spot it.
  • Unnecessary Avengers bleeps and blips. Pretty savvy.
  • Anyone interested in a Ghostbusters sequel?
  • New Ant-Man trailer… still looking forward to this one… though I’m struggling with the ant at the drum set.
  • This was pretty classy. Watching Disney hand the opening weekend record back and forth to its own self.
  • Interesting deviation from the events of Avengers: Infinity War… either misdirection directly pushed into the merchandising, or a deleted scene that completely changes the film thematically.
  • Josh Halloway as Gambit? The movie was a dog, but thats a great casting choice in my view.
  • Misgivings about choices made in the Snyder/Whedonverse over at DC/WB, I would still have liked to see this whole arc pan out as originally intended.
  • Supposedly the Shazam movie may show us the whole family of related heroes. Only important because I may have drawn Mary Marvel 4 or 5 times for no particular reason. Also, suspected casting for the character in question appears to be Michelle Borth, from Hawaii 5-0 and the Forgotten…
  • Well, this headline was sufficient to not need to read the article, but also to get blocked by cybernanny. “allison-mack-was-trying-super-hard-to-get-emma-watson-in-her-sex-cult”
  • Joe Mang, not letting go (on a yacht)…
  • We talked about this on the podcast, but James Cameron, I mean, srsly.
  • Mean Tweets, Avengers Edition. Lovely as usual. I enjoy when they don’t deny it.

That’s all for now. I’ve been on radio silence for several days in a surprisingly successful attempt to avoid Avengers spoilers. I saw it unspoiled!

Whose Soul Is This – Robots Root 28 July 2017

Let me just quickly say that the latest episode of Preacher was devastating. I don’t recall if this Cassidy detail was in the comic, but it was beautiful and tragic and so well done. Gilgun is owning this show. Moving on…

Robot’s Root!

  • Disenchantment, a new animated series from Matt Groening, is coming… at some point… and will be excellent. Postmodern, adult fantasy. I’ll take it!
  • Suburbicon is George Clooney doing his best Coen Brothers impression, but I’m fine with that.
  • This posits that Villenueve is on the shortlist for the next Bond film. While I loved the speculative rumor about Nolan taking on a future version of the franchise, I’d be very interested in a Villenueve version as well.
  • Here’s that infamous suit, which you can, and surely should, own today!
  • The latest in Deadwood non-news: now the script is in, and is excellent, and HBO… just needs to… get all cast together, get a budget worked out… you know, little things.
  • Everything you wanted to know about Batman’s ‘tactical suit’ in JL… including floating armor plates that don’t do anything, and straps to nowhere! It’s not that I don’t like it. It has strengths, too. But still, some odd choices.
  • Spencer Wilding has been discovered working on Han Solo. WHAT DOES IT MEAN.
  • Apparently, the next Arrested Development season will be a whodonit about the murder of Lucille. What a great concept.
  • Still struggle with all the humanoid, smooth armored new Jaegers, but the promo from SDCC looks pretty OK.
  • This is NOT the publicity that WB wanted for JL… sort of like all the other publicity they didn’t want. I love all the Cesar Romero Joker images on Twitter this week…
  • Having flown all week, I’ve been thinking a fair amount about this boondoggle after SDCC, in which United claimed travelers couldn’t check comics, and blamed the TSA, which turned it back around on United again. Can you imagine how upset those congoers must have been? I can.
  • “She’s a robocop with a weird robo-walk with a weakness for being snuck up on by dudes with tasers!” Honest Trailer for GitS. I love it.

Youre Gonna Get Some Hop Ons – Robots Root 17 May 2017

Of course the important news of the day, moreso than impeachable offenses and wonky missiles and health care class warfare and space aliens beached in Indonesia, but no less as inevitable as any of those: officially official confirmation of AD S05. I mean, we knew it was coming, but I’m glad it’s here. In bits and pieces, we’ve learned that Hurwitz is inspired by the election disaster, and that he’s returning to ensemble scenes instead of the ‘follow each character around’ standalones. But also, wow, 2018. I looked it up: the S04 experiment was 2013. I can’t believe it will have been five years.

Meanwhile, THIS HAPPENED:

  • In some strange alternate reality, Robert Zemeckis, Sam Raimi and Matt Vaughn are supposedly in the running for the brutally underdeveloped and problematic Flash film. Why and how is any of that possible.
  • Look. I want Star Trek: Discovery to succeed. I always want these projects to somehow work. And on the face of it, I like this photo. I like the actors, and I really like the old school tricorder in the holster. But really? ENOUGH REY FOR YOU??
  • And look, I have no problem with hyperbole in film promotion… especially when it’s a translation from another language… but this promo material for Last Jedi cracked me up. Everyone’s focusing on how ‘THE BIGGEST SHOCKING REVEAL IN THE HISTORY OF SHOCKING REVEALS EVER EVER WILL BE REVEALED!’ language, but what I thought was funny was the assertion that things got serious once they killed Han Solo. You know, because the deaths of millions in the hand-wavy blowing up of a solar system wasn’t a tragedy or anything.
  • Slaughterhouse Rulez… I mean I’d already be in just because of the pedigree, but I do like that premise. Shithead power schoolkids getting lovecrafted to death while being shitheads? Sounds great!
  • I’m amused by the reference that by the end of Defenders, it will feel like The Hangover… because I don’t know about you, but my drinking increased progressively as I worked through Iron Fist.
  • I wasn’t going to watch any more trailers for Battle for the Toleyou of the Preparation for the Planet of the Apes, but then I did anyway. Looks kick-ass, of course. I didn’t like Woody Harrelson as much in the earlier trailers, other than shaving in front of his troops, which is always a winning move… but here, I love him ranting that (presumably) Caesar is ‘too emotional’ hahahahaha
  • Best quote ever, regarding the sensational lawsuit over blind date texting during GOG2: ““While damages sought are modest, the principle is important as defendant’s behavior is a threat to civilized society,” the suit said.
  • Here’s the first promo material for the new Hellboy film, which features, uh, Hellboy Hellboying around… notable only because hey, it’s new Mike Mignola art, and we need that in this world.
  • For the ultra-rich cosplaying Iron Man fan in your life: dig this concept armor

That’s all for today. Back to mixing your sloshy martinis…

I’ve Always Said Gin Cures All Infections – 15 May 2017

Here is the best Alien: Covenant promo material ever. Never to be topped. Ever.

Meanwhile:

LO, Robot’s Root for 15 May 2016 was born:

  • The words no one likes to hear, really: “You are paddleboarding next to approximately 15 great white sharks. They are advising you exit the water in a calm manner. The sharks are as close as the surfline.”
  • New Mutants casting is now confirmed: Split and GoT are involved. Here’s Phil Noto sketching them up, for science.
  • Agents of SHIELD was just renewed for S05. I thought last season was a mixed bag: Ghost Rider LOOKED good but was boring, LMDs were fun, sort of a back door into the Skrull style storyline I enjoy, and the Framework alternate reality stuff involving Agents of Hydra… well I love that mirror universe type stuff. We’ll see what next season offers. I’m hoping some Marvel fandom entirely new.
  • Shades is back for Luke Cage S02. That’s great news, not only because he was the cool villain, at least after the King was lampshaded… but also because he’s like the only one left.
  • Here’s Joss Whedon’s WW script we’ve heard so much about over the years. You be the judge. If you have that sort of time.
  • I don’t want to dive into GOG2 spoilers just yet (we haven’t recorded our review for Robot-Kraken) but I’m enjoying this bullshit about young Kurt Russell being practical FX. Yeah.
  • Is Taika Waititi trolling the interwebs?
  • Jason Bateman just announced he’s signed on for AD S05. More importantly, his Twitter title is ‘friend of Will Arnett’.
  • Have you gotten enough Heroes? I mean Gifted? If not, here’s more.
  • Zuul makes me very happy. This is where young life and older life merge in pleasant ways, culturally.
  • Here’s that Han Solo hair. Looks pretty good.

And with that, I leave you to continue your anti-facehugger preparations. I’m well on my way…

This Just Happened: Arrested Development S05 and Other Things

Image

AD Season 5 is 99.99999% a Go! Or it’s not. But I think it is.
link!

Meanwhile, these happened:

– The Coen Brothers are venturing into TV, or at least a TV/film hybrid. I’m on board, and they haven’t even revealed anything about the subject matter. `link!

– On the one hand, I’m disappointed that the Lucas Museum’s final home is LA; SF REALLY BLEW IT ON THIS ONE. On the other hand, still accessible. link!

– Woody Harrelson is now officially on board Han Solo. What an interesting cast this is shaping up to be! I do wonder if he will be rotoscoped… link!

– Peter Dinklage circling the next two Avengers films? First: YES. Second: who? Puck? voice work for another character? I’m curious. link!

– I’m not sure there’s much HERE here, but supposedly the new X-Men TV Series in development will dovetail with the MCU. Which MCU: the fox X-Men stuff or the Marvel stuff? Doesn’t really work either way, but presumably will be like Agents of SHIELD and make references in one direction and then run with whatever. They are neck deep in a Jacosta/LMD storyline and just referenced Dr Strange in a subtle way. link!

– The OAV of Ghost in the Shell will have a theatrical release prior to the new film. Good call! link!

– James Gunn has a sweet Moon Knight film concept he says… but no time to do it. #GODDAMNCHARLIE link!

– BRB gotta build one for my bike real quick: link! ADIOS!

LOST DOG
My favorite anything ever from SDCC this past weekend.

In other news:

ITEM: As is the tradition, Huriwtz is providing cagey, grossly general indications that another season of Arrested Development is in the works. And as usual, I EAT IT RGHT UP!

ITEM: Just a random side tangent here. This comic has introduced Stormtroopers that are effective. Stormtroopers with different specializations within the same unit, much like traditional infantry. And we saw a good amount of this in Force Awakens, the different functions, better soldiers, etc. When Rogue One first promo material went out, everyone pointed to the black troopers and declared them to be ‘Death Troopers’ from the old SW Extended Universe. This is all an interesting problem, I don’t know if 4th wall is the way I’d put it. But, it’s this perception that Stormtroopers are terrible soldiers because they never hit anything, fall off ledges, etc. But that was all artifice from the filmmaking of the early films. It was framework allowing the heroes to succeed. Even in New Hope, when the blockade runner is boarded, while neither side demonstrates tactics of any kind, the Stormtroopers do take out all the rebels. But the legend sprung from the jokes about that film. Strormtroopers suck. Can’t hit anything. Same as how GI Joe and COBRA were all terrible because in the cartoon they just shot random lasers in the sky. And another layer to this: over time, most general infantry aren’t crack shots. They are hastily trained, young, scared kids. Disoriented, panicked, etc. So yes, in military structure, you have experienced, highly trained soldiers vs. general soldiers, and you have experienced general soldiers vs. inexperienced, new soldiers. But we don’t think about the military and imagine them all being ineffectual, shooting blanks… the greenest soldier, eyes closed, shitting their fatigues, heavily stressed, can accidentally pop an opponent in the forehead. ANYWAY, what I’n getting at is that the bruhaha about this comic is that the Stormtroopers are ‘worryingly effective’ as the writer noted. While I think there’s room for stories about highly trained, advanced operatives serving the Empire’s military, just as we have such units in conventional real-world militaries, the trope that the general infantry of the Empire are worthless is false, based on the Star Wars setting. The Empire is the EMPIRE. They’ve got unlimited resources, manpower, droidpower, clonepower, have captured, and maintained, countless worlds.
Stormtroopers can shoot.

ITEM: Another random aside.
We’ve talked several times about how I tend to think of Alien 3 more favorably than most, colored by my experience seeing it in the theater as a pre-release edit that was prior to the studio cutting it into oblivion. Anyway, I was reading something that referenced ‘the Assembly Cut’… a rework of the film based on a lot of unused or removed material, based on Fincher’s shooting breakdowns, with new content, lots of remastering… you can read about it in detail here. While I’m certain the pre-release early version I saw is different than this cut, some of the things referenced here jive with my memory: the film being longer, with more development for the characters, greater emphasis on the religion, the lack of chestburster grappling in the suicide scene… though there weren’t any cattle in the version that I remember. Anyway, cool.

ITEM: Interesting article about Tick, specifically the new, upcoming relaunch, on Warburton, why the new one was cast so differently, the tonal changes, etc. I used this image only because we’ve already posted the only content from the new one so far, AND I just miss the design and cast from the original. But I’m definitely looking forward to the reboot.

ITEM: This stunt smells pretty artificial to me: Cavill showing up at Comicon in disguise, then surprising Will Smith at the SS signing, then the later cut of him playing a prank on Batman/Affleck/Whatever… see, I’ve always enjoyed learning that celebs were wandering the con floor in costume, specifically because it seemed to show that they didn’t want to be recognized, just wanted to nerd out in peace. Cavill here looked like he was egging to get called out. Muscles out, Faulkes mask on, that’s it. Like he’s broadcasting precisely 0% nerd interest, more like a jock putting buck teeth in and masquerading as a geek to amuse his friends. It feels obviously staged. Same with the bumper sticker thing. My takeaway was that WB was trying to pad the post-BVS ‘lighter DCCU’ thing they pushed hard in the Justice league footage, by sort of retroactively trying to vibe that BVS, the actors, etc were actually good natured fans of the genre full of smiles and that our collective memory of BVS being overwraught and serious and heavy and unfun (murderverse, as Sight says) is inaccurate in light of the new lighter direction*. WHich feels pandering and unnecessary. Had Cavill seemed to relish being at the con and nerding out about products and creators, the way I’ve seen many genuine nerd celebrities do, I’d have a different feeling about it. Odd part is, Cavill doesn’t have a rep for hating the material. He’s not one of these actors looking down on the work. He’s vocally appreciative of the opportunity and fully enjoying the fame and money. Hes just, apparently, a superjock and partier/womanizer blowing his cash and hooking up and being hedonistic and egotistical. According to the word on the street and the content of his interviews anyway. And there’s NOTHING WRONG WITH ANY OF THAT. it just susprises me when they send him out to pretend to be a comicon participant. Meh!

*That is not another jab at that film, either. I’m talking about general perception and cultural presence of it.

ITEM: Films featuring western leads set in foreign countries are a tough nut sometimes. Fodder for controversy and criticism. But China is a huge market for Hollywood, and this is a first-english-dialog film for a prominant big budget Chinese director, and it’s a neat concept for a movie. Plus Damon. And Pascal. I’m optimistic.

ITEM: I was just saying on our last Robot-Kraken podcast (or one of them, anyway, it’s a blur) that I’d love to see another pass at Rocketeer. I wanted a period one, really awesome, detailed, pulpy Indiana Jones stuff, with, and this is important, A HOT BRUNETTE PINUP GIRL. This Disney reboot will feature a young, female, afirican-american lead, which has already caused some to cry foul, wring hands, complain about the overly-compensating progressive remakes (ie. the Ghostbusters flip-out)… but who’s to say we lose the pinup girl angle? There’s all sorts of directions this could take that keeps it period, pulpy and sexy. You never know. I mean, it wont. But it COULD! But it wont. But maybe.

I even have not one, but THREE aborted sketches in the archives. That all said, I see a lot of good cosplay these days, but I’m particularly impressed when someone makes a design I don’t like actually look good. Great job on this one. I’d still prefer her cosplay any other version of the character or whatever, but she pulled this look off… somehow.

ITEM: Thinking about the tech focus of the new Spidey continuity, how the Vulture appears to be going, and how Stark gave Parker his new suit… the upcoming film is sure to have a suit with gadgets. Look, I don’t like Spidey gadgets. That teaser described awhile back that showed him with a gadety Spidey belt buckle and some sort of horseshit on the shooters bothered me. Just give me the Spidey from Civil War, and 3 hours of it. HOWEVER, if the costume generates web wings a la old Ditko, I’d be down with that!

Ragnarockanrolla – 20 May 2016

Image
Well, looks like Jeff Goldblum wasn’t being courted for the Spider-Man villain after all. Apparently he’s been cast as the Grandmaster, one of Marvel’s space-LSD-era’s wierder demigods, and I’ll hazard a guess, the one responsible for a Planet Hulk type situation in Thor: Ragnarok.

Grandmaster, or as I used to call him, Gamesguy

Inhumans is being bumped indefinitely. Between bringing Spider-Man into the fold and the ongoing war with Permutter’s TV division, I’m not terribly shocked. However, SHIELD has firmly established Inhumans as the MCU/TV version of mutants, and did a good job of it, so there’s no reason this can’t jump to film, if they ever just address the power conflict between Permutter (not my favorite) and Fiege. That said, if they would just move all the Marvel properties to Netflix, I’d be even happier.

Three different actors have indicated that AD S05, whenever that happens, will return the cast to an ensemble process in lieu of the schedule-driven solo character arc thing they did for S04 (which I still loved)… so it could be 2032 before this happens, but it’ll be awesome reGARTless.

Google’s Shaft team just revealed a robot that can climb stairs. It sort of reminds me of TARS from Interstellar, but cornering you in the wine cellar for hot murder.

Alamo Drafthouse just announced the Return of the Trilogy roadshow, with tix going on sale on of course May 4th. Not showing AT the Drafthouse in SF, but quite the spectacle, looks like.

That’s all for today. Our friend Deeply Dapper nearly did himself in in our podcast session last night, so anyone who has a spare liver, let a brother know. Or a spare bookshelf.
