Mount The Curb – Robots Root 9 May 2018

This is what the internet is for. STOP LYING, BATMAN.

Meanwhile.

  • I cant make heads or tails of what’s going on with TJ Miller’s implosion, but he won’t be in Deadpool 3, apparently. I do miss his energy in Silicon Valley, though. Not talking about behind the scenes value, just the finished products…
  • I’d be down with an all female Knights of Ren. This is like the rumored post-Avengers all-female supers team-up. You don’t even have to market it that overtly. Just DO it. Such as with Annihilation.
  • Let me just day, for the 333th time: I want a Bucky Barnes Cap. I mean, i NEEDS it. It was great in the comics.
  • So here’s the magical photo full of unicorn sparkles that apparently convinced Snyder to cast Cavill as Superman. And it’s… yeah… well, maybe I’m biased by how bulked he was later, but this isn’t thrilling.
  • I didn’t watch this AD S05 trailer, as I’m just going to dive right in and watch the show directly… but here you go.
  • The amount of misdirection in the Avengers: Infinity War trailers was peak. It does beg the question of how are they going to market the 4th Avengers movie… I’m of the mind they have all the actors do promo and press anyway, because come on… just don’t tell us HOW they come back. It’s like that hot mess of Superman/no Superman in the JL ads.
  • Super into what I’m seeing of Luke Cage S02. TOO much charisma. “They have to know we tried.”
  • As if the Infinity War situation couldn’t get more brutal.
  • Black Widow has gone through some hyperbolic number of director interviews, according to the supernet, so it must be true. More important subtext is the concept that they are looking for the right voice, not JUST an indie, or female, or controversial, voice. Hopefully, though, all those things in the end.
  • Sherlock Holmes 3 is coming, and I’m delighted.
  • It will be interesting to see how the original Wasp suit looks in motion. That helmet and the coat design were always something that barely made sense even in the comics.
  • Good to hear that Artemis actually has some old-school bite to it. The trailers were cut so as to look like every other post-John Wick project. Neat to hear it’s more 80s action movie…
  • Beautiful Last Starfighter art…
  • GUISE: MUTATIONS! ALIENS! DEATH FROM DUST! I mean, not like we ever went to the moon, but still.

OK, go to itunes now and check out or latest podcast which was released yesterday: Black Panther, Jumanji, insouciance…

And Thats Why You Always Leave a Note – Robots Root 03 May 2018

This was pretty inspired Han Solo marketing.

Meanwhile, this happened:

  • This was ALSO pretty good, for different reasons. A CAPE ROOM.
  • I cannot EVEN with this film.
  • WELP (Avengers: Infinity War spoilerish)
  • “John Wick uses the service industry to stay alive.”  … I’m picturing him eating for free before his shifts and being super down with the daily special objective opinions…
  • SJ Clarkson is directing the next ST film: notable for being a breach of the white male club, and also because, directly related, she’s not QT.
  • It’s getting to the point that the virals are as interesting as the films. I love that Jackman was on board. Now, Celine Dion was a bit much…
  • How dope nerd is Winston Duke that he misidentifies Whiplash as the more obscure X-Men villain Omega Red?
  • If you want to see Samuel L Jackson look slightly younger and with two eyes and a tight curl, well, you’re in luck. No need to get the DVDs out.
  • This could be one of the more tweaky easter eggs in Avengers. I mean, for the AD fan… even knowing about something being in the film, in advance, I still didnt spot it.
  • Unnecessary Avengers bleeps and blips. Pretty savvy.
  • Anyone interested in a Ghostbusters sequel?
  • New Ant-Man trailer… still looking forward to this one… though I’m struggling with the ant at the drum set.
  • This was pretty classy. Watching Disney hand the opening weekend record back and forth to its own self.
  • Interesting deviation from the events of Avengers: Infinity War… either misdirection directly pushed into the merchandising, or a deleted scene that completely changes the film thematically.
  • Josh Halloway as Gambit? The movie was a dog, but thats a great casting choice in my view.
  • Misgivings about choices made in the Snyder/Whedonverse over at DC/WB, I would still have liked to see this whole arc pan out as originally intended.
  • Supposedly the Shazam movie may show us the whole family of related heroes. Only important because I may have drawn Mary Marvel 4 or 5 times for no particular reason. Also, suspected casting for the character in question appears to be Michelle Borth, from Hawaii 5-0 and the Forgotten…
  • Well, this headline was sufficient to not need to read the article, but also to get blocked by cybernanny. “allison-mack-was-trying-super-hard-to-get-emma-watson-in-her-sex-cult”
  • Joe Mang, not letting go (on a yacht)…
  • We talked about this on the podcast, but James Cameron, I mean, srsly.
  • Mean Tweets, Avengers Edition. Lovely as usual. I enjoy when they don’t deny it.

That’s all for now. I’ve been on radio silence for several days in a surprisingly successful attempt to avoid Avengers spoilers. I saw it unspoiled!

You Have 3 Seconds to Comply: Robots Root 11 April 2018

Dig this new Mondo poster: ROBOCOP by Josan Gonzalez

Meanwhile, in space, all of this is happening right now!

  • Taika Waititi confirmed that he’s not adapting the Akira film, but rather going after the voluminous book series. I find that interesting. There’s so much more THERE there, and also gives him more to do than just a remake.
  • Speaking of ambitious, Apple is adapting the I, Robot series of works from Isaac Asimov.
  • Woody Harrelson may or may not be playing Carnage in the Venom film. I say DO IT.
  • Transformers cartoon opening credits, shot with the toys in stop-motion WINNNNNNS.
  • The Deadwood film production just got a tax credit. This gives them a timetable, which is a good thing.
  • Christina Hodson has been named as the new Batgirl writer. This is also a good thing.
  • Boss Level sounds really neat or really terrible.
  • If you want to know secret stuff that isn’t surprising stuff, regarding Iron Spidey in Avengers: Infinity War, read on. In other Marvel news, I think this poster shot shows that Evangeline Lily should have been a Marvel heroine years and years ago. She looks really motivated.
  • Eric Bana is set to star in the first season of Dirty John, some sort of anthology-based true crime show on Bravo that isn’t True Detective on HBO, and inexplicably features a character name as the title, which begs questions about it’s anthology nature.
  • This is pissing all the right people off: Westworld creators said they’d let Reddit superfans in on the active development of S02, which starts later this month… they announced a few days ago that their plan was to circumvent the huge hunt for answers and easter eggs and spoilers by actually giving the subreddit access to a video that explains the S02 plot, so they can opt-in if desired, as long as they keep it to themselves and don’t leak it to mainstream press. Then last night they released a video, which ended up being an elaborate Rick-Roll… LITERALLY… I love it. Speaking of, you know I’m down with S02’s Shogunworld.
  • The Shazam costume may or may not be objectively bad… but I liked Zachari Levi’s comments about the intrinsic insecurity of pre-haters.
  • I was totally into it, until I realized the pilot’s legs are fake and its just a stilt construct. I mean, not JUST, but you know.
  • Moviepass users (aka Deeply Dapper) rejoice: AMC theaters were just unlocked. That’s pretty huge.
  • The BBC is launching a big budget early 20s adaptation of War of the Worlds. I’m 300% on board…
  • I initially dismissed Bosslogic’s manip of Krasinski and Blunt as Reed and Sue of the FF as being too current, given the obsession with their current film… but looking at it more closely, I’d be down with all of these casting ideas. I still think Richards needs to be older, greying and aloof… but even more than that, they need to be a believable couple… and this pair have proven they can be, on screen…
  • More featurette film stuff from Isle of Dogs, this time about the real on-set canine crew….
  • Finally, trailer roundup:
    • The Meg, which I always assumed would be terrible, actually amused me. So much reminding me of Jaws 3 in 3D… but also Deep Blue Sea, which I actually never saw. I do love 4th wall characters like Rainn Wilson’s one here, just saying it like it is.
    • Similarly, I dismissed Upgrade when the teaser came out awhile back as being a B-movie… but it does have some interesting elements in it. Logan Marshall-Green affects an unusual stance when the AI is doing the fighting for him, almost a hangjawed expression and slouched neck against a rigid posture, but he was Shocker #1 in Homecoming and soldier X in Prometheus, so let’s give it a shot.
    • Terminal appears to be based on a pitch like: “Imagine Atomic Blonde but with Margot Robbie and made to look like Lock Stock plus we’ll include one of those actors even, for authenticity“… but I’m still on board.

You Mess with the Gadot You Get The W Gang Signs – Robots Root 24 Mar 2018

Despite resolving as the lowest moneymaker in the DCEU lineup thus far, fan interest remains strong enough to put Justice League at the top of weekly DVD/Blu-Ray sales, which isn’t surprising: the film may not have had staying power in theaters, but it’s a no-brainer for comic and action movie fans to have at home. Also, this image above.

Meanwhile, in space:

  • Lord and Miller are getting an Executive Producer credit on Han Solo, which is actually a positive thing: easy to imagine them having no credit at all, given how much of the film was reshot. Meanwhile, Ryan Reynolds is getting a writing credit on Deadpool 2, which shows how much his personal sense of humor has helped shape the character’s success, I think.
  • These unfinished shots of the aborted Justice League film costumes are pretty interesting in that Fringe Universe sort of way. I don’t hate them as much as others on the supernet, that’s for sure. I certainly struggle with redesigns of major franchise characters, but the Superman look here reminds me of something hovering between Rance’s redesign and mine. Don’t pay any attention to this Batman design, though. It’s atrocious.
  • The new Deadpool 2 trailer is super fun. Cool to see the X-Force team in action. Plus, a bonus Skarsgard I had no idea was involved.
  • Doug Liman’s Youtube RED series Impulse is basically a redo of his Jumper film… and actually looks compelling, to be honest. And I didn’t hate Jumper.
  • Noah Hawley has hit it out of the park with Legion, so I’m inclined to be optimistic about his incredibly challenging Doctor Doom film challenge, which appears to be challenging.
  • Astro City has been optioned for a live-action TV series, or series of series, as the case may be. Astro City was an inspiration to me in my youth as far as worldbuilding goes, so I’m down with it.
  • Less than one month to go before Westworld S02, and the viral is viral.
  • Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth reuniting in the Men in Black remake? Is this fan casting?! Excellent.
  • Pretty stellar ode to the stache here
  • In keeping with tradition, WB have announced a production schedule for a DCEU film without having the script or casting resolved. Batman, 2019.
  • It’s awesome that Elizabeth Olsen called out Empire on the savage photomanip of her face in these covers.

Thats all for today… off to drag Thor’s head around as I hunt for Infinity Stones in my disassembled bathroom subfloor.

The Kree to Success – Robots Root 20 Mar 2018

Lots of photos of Brie Larson filming Captain Marvel in her first Kree-based suit, this time with far less bunching and ill-fitment, still pre-CGI enhancement. But man, as it is, pretty neat. Have a go.

Meanwhile, in space:

  • More Cloak and Dagger business from the I’m Not Interested in That department.
  • WHOA. Ridley Scott is in talks to take on my favorite espionage comic, Queen and Country.
  • Scuttlebutt abounds that Tom Cruise is being courted for an elder Hal Jordan in Green Lantern Corps, which is interesting on three levels: a) he’s Tom Cruise and generally very entertaining, 2) Hal Jordon was basically Top Gun, and d) he’s being cast in the older, wiser guy roles despite his efforts to pretend he’s 20.
  • Justice League made less gross than any other DCEU movie. I wouldn’t say that makes it the worst DCEU movie, however. Though I’m not sure how I feel about any of them related to each other.
  • Where the hell is Rick and Morty, you ask?
  • DeWanda Wise is being replaced on Captain Marvel, due to scheduling problems, with Lashana Lynch. Talk about a Win Win!
  • Bosslogic has created an all-Hawkeye Avengers poster. Hilarious.
  • Tag offers a pretty incredible cast. I’m down!

THAT IS ALL. If my plane is consumed by a late-90’s disaster movie style typhoon tonight, let me go out simply with this: peace and bike grease, and I remain Team: Iron Man.

The Cavalcade of Helmetless Heroes – Robots Root 9 Mar 2018

Herewith, witness the Calvacade of Helmetless Heroes FFS!

Meanwhile, in space, this may be happening:

  • Honest Trailers does He-Man
  • My favorite How to Dad video yet.
  • I kinda like this promo pic for Daredevil S03… done by Joe Q, even. I’ ve always been a fan of lettering pushed into the environment of the piece.
  • I have to agree: if we couldn’t have an actually FORMIDABLE foes in Phasma, at least give her this scene to show her ruthlessness…
  • Now here’s the full trailer for Prospect, which still adorns my desktop as a background screen…
  • Killmonger concept art shows that the final version was the best choice. I still wish he kept the mask on the whole time… it was awesome.
  • More neural net fun, this time with sentence gradients.
  • Again, not a horror fan, but Endless looks pretty interesting. Lovecraftian doomsday cult business. Sure!
  • Dafne Keen is on board the new big budget take on His Dark Materials… I think they are abandoning the Golden Compass released prior…
  • Krysten Ritter says no Defenders S02 was planned, nor does one look likely. Depending on how you felt about S01, your mileage varies on this news…

  • Official confirmation direct from Patty Jenkins of Kristin Wiig joining WW2 as Cheetah. I’m intrigued!
  • Karl Urban confirmed that, as suspected, Alex Garland not only wrote Dredd, but stepped in and directed it once the director was canned.

  • Welp, pre-FX aside, Shazam’s costume does indeed appear to be the classic one, with the ubiquitous fine texture weave I hate so much. The fake muscles are weird, but I like the way they handled the lightning bolt, and the cool nod to the golden age books with those Talky Tawny symbols at the cape. The cape design itself, with the stiff hood, is creating a weird massing to his upper half, something I’ve worried about when designing a similar vibe on some TRDL characters with hoods…
  • Rumors are afoot that Jessica Drew may be brought into Spider-Man 2 as a female lead. I’d be down with it. Super down!
  • Neat: Jon Favreau has been announced as helming a Star Wars live action show, presumably for the new streaming service.
  • Mackenzie Davis from Halt and Catch Fire (and more recently, Blade Runner 2049) may have been tapped for Terminator 6… which bodes well for Terminator 6…
  • Elseworlds may be dead… but Black Label is new, and is basically the same thing. I like that Wonder Woman, if nothing else.
  • I love that Westworld not only embraces their obsessive fan community of conspiracy theorists and plot hypothesizers (like this guy) they are actively involving them/us in S02.
  • Reshoots on Deadpool 2… after bad test screenings… thats not good. As nice as the current pedigree technically is (re: our recent podcast about Atomic Blonde and John Wick 2) I wonder what we lost when Tim Miller left.
  • NEED
  • I remain uninterested in Superman comics, but I think BMB is right: optimism is what sets him apart from other characters, and needs to be the focus. All Star Superman was successful in this way.
  • I am SO DOWN with the Morrison/Quitely New X-Men costumes happening here. FINALLY.
  • Lastly, Lego Pacific Rim sweding! Excellent. I’d rather watch that.

Super Tole – Robots Root 5 Feb 2018

IT DOESN’T LOOK LIKE ANYTHING TO ME!!!!

I love the Super Bowl. I don’t watch the Super Bowl. But I like the ads. THE ADS!

A selection of nerd items I enjoyed…

  • I still wish the Croc Dundee stunt was a real movie I’d see the SHIT out of. But anyway. The previous trailer was actually better but this was the ‘reveal’ that surprised no one. It was almost like waiting for your lover to break up with you and then it happens and you’re almost relieved its over.
  • I said I wouldn’t watch it. I lay in my bed, tossing and turning (remember, I’m in Indonesia right now, so future) but then I did anyway. I like the Iron Man armor as realized from the concept art. I don’t get Spidey unmasking in the ring gate scene. I do love that Thanos sneer. This was less exciting than several other trailers, which doesn’t speak negatively of Avengers as much as positively of those other properties that we see the FIRST footage of, instead.
  • Another Red Sparrow trailer that chips away further at the Black Widow film to come.
  • I really like watching Dwayne Johnson. But I’m struggling with this project because leave Die Hard alone. Thanxxxx. Also I spent all day on the 63rd floor of my building, so.
  • Jurassic World Fallen Toleyou continues to trade on Chris Pratt’s charm, and it works.
  • I really enjoy the more recent Mission Impossible stuff… usually… Rogue Nation being the exception because Lung’s blueberries. Anyway, this looks looks great. You just can’t unsee the ankle shattering.
  • Holy shit, Cloverfield Paradox went to Netflix instead of theaters and is ALREADY live?!? I mean, not for me. I’m locked out regionally atm. But still. For YOU!
  • And lastly, of COURSE, the promised Solo teaser. I would have put this at the top, I was just so unprepared for how rabidly I want more Westworld. But there’s much to unpack in Solo. I’m waiting for the full trailer tomorrow. Today. Tomorrow. Gah! Anyway, so many things.

Meanwhile, this twitter response, which the kids today call a clap back, was awesome.

Haileys and Bumblebees – Robots Root 3 Jan 2018

The only three things I can find to be positive about Bumblebee: The Damn Movie are, in no particular order:

  1. No Michael Bay
  2. Bumblebee is a Bug FFS
  3. Hailey Steinfeld

Maybe that WAS the right order.

Robot’s Root!

  • This comparison between Force Awakens and the Knights of the Old Republic storyline was pretty good. Had I any knowledge of the latter, maybe I would have detected some of this. Or not.
  • Every time Neil Blomkamp posts concept art from his axe-murdered Alien 5 treatment, I get frustrated.
  • I know this isn’t the most popular opinion, but I for one would want to see those extra hours of Blade Runner 2049… speaking of which, Ridley Scott’s elder man ego is spinning out… these comments are nuts.
  • This quote from Guillermo del Toro was amusing mostly because he criticized the design. I feel him.
  • Rian Johnson is supposedly set to begin filming scenes for the new trilogy in 2018… without a script, or even a stated concept… so at most, I hope it’s establishing shot set pieces… I mean, a road is nice. I like roads.
  • The most obvious conclusion reached from the linkbait comments that ‘Thor will undergo a dramatic transformation in Infinity Tole’ is a loss of an arm, as per the comics some years back… I’d like to see Thanos rip a Thor arm off…
  • new octopus alert. ALERT!
  • Hailey Steinfeld wants to be Joss Whedon’s Batgirl, if these misleading interview comments are to be believed. I would not mind. She’s fit, athletic, has a great expressive face, and has been acting since she was a wee one (remember True Grit? Long before the pop singer phase)… I had a different fantasy casting for this role, but maybe we’ll get to that sometime in 2018 on the podcast if a couple of other rubes get their shit together…
  • On the heels of the failed Dark Universe, Paramount is hurtling forward with the Hasbroverse, announcing dates for GI Joe, Micronauts and others… despite not having scripts or a plan. Sounds about right. Dungeons and Dragons AGAIN. Guh.
  • Here’s an interview with Neal Scanlan about creature work on TLJ… if you are into that sort of thing, which I am…
  • I still can’t even with this fever dream. It might be great. Mortal Engines…
  • I have an intense need to clean up and sort this mess… while eating THIS, of course.
  • Lung and I traded finds in this vein… this was my favorite of the Star Wars ones. Still looking for the perfect Deckard one.
  • Mark L Smith has been tasked as writer for Tarantino’s Star Trek film… I mean… someone rubbed a lamp somewhere right?
  • I enjoy radical fan theories where the main character is dead. Works with almost any movie.
  • Would Darkseid have helped or hurt Justice League? I think, as Kevin Smith described it, it would have made an effective tether for the next film.
  • Great honest trailer about Return of the Toleyou… except for the grating mispronunciation of Maori…
  • The new Annihilation trailer is already showing too much. I’m on blackout. But I can’t wait.
  • They do look pretty New Mutanty… love the Lockheed puppet…
  • Cloverfield 3 comes out in April… but with no name yet and no promos. Which is fine. They played it fast and loose with the last “sequel”… I’m still on board, ESPECIALLY if it is indeed space based as rumored. The cast alone!
  • True Detective S03 is shaping up to be pretty exciting to this guy: three time periods, the Ozarks, now Dorff joins Ali? Damn

That’s all for today. Back to cooking them Porgs…

Get this Man a Shield – Robots Root 29 Nov 2017

Well, the trailer may not have been the creepy, story-telling ‘preface’ style one I was hoping for, rather than a clip show, but what we got was pretty amazing. Highlights for me include Peter’s Spider-Sense, what I’m sure is Banner wearing the Hulkbuster armor (after Ragnorok, being initially reluctant to hulk out makes sense), a great look at Cap in the beard and blacked out Winter Soldier -era uniform but with Wakandan gloves, and Thanos’ smirks. Also, probably most of all, this Iron Man crumpling smackdown above. Watch it here, for the 33rd time. My first three were on an iphone, so it was nice to size up to 30″ at work. THATSWHATSHESAID

Other root:

  • This whole project confounds and delights me. More holiday T than we deserve. I give it a Kah and a Kiyah!
  • Cross-stiched Ultima screencap? Sure! Reminds me of those mandalas you wipe away when completed.
  • So, Brie Larson as Captain Marvel. Meno as the traitorous Kree informant Yon-Rogg. Effing SKRULLS in the first place. Time shunting. And now, Jude Law as Captain Mar-Vell? So good. Plus, if he is truly named that way, more logic gymnastics for the screenwriters to sort out.
  • The Hindenburg Explodes! is one of those fairly high-concept, stony exercises Adult Swim tends to greenlight. It’s a fake pilot by Robb Cordry, featuring many familiar faces and at least three jokes. I sought it out after seeing a soundless GIF of the last three seconds, precisely. I watched the whole thing, though, for science.

  • I loved loved LOVED Blade Runner 2049. I plan to see it, flaws and all, at least 3,333 more times. But this scathing review is my personal favorite review of anything ever. He actually describes birthing replicants as ‘DECANTING.’
  • Guillermo del Toro regrets not helming the Paramount ‘Dark Universe’ films that are now all canceled. So do I, man. Regret that he didn’t, not that I didn’t. I wouldn’t do it.
  • It is suggested that the presumed multi-verse angle of Avengers 4 and the next lifetime of films will be made to happen via quantum realm hopping, a la Ant-Man (and Wasp) which works for me.
  • The CB Cebulski pseudonym controversy is pretty fascinating, coming out at this precise time (him taking over at Marvel, him openly admitting he used a Japanese pseudonym to write comics for Marvel in the 90s, and the culturial appropriation and racism implied though not universally understood) and it’s an interesting zeitgeist for the discussion. At least to me. If he were writing those ninja stories under his real name, would the controversy be as great?
  • This isn’t even from Vivid Video. They already did one.*
  • Finally, LEGO LIGHTCYCLE TAKE MY MONEY that I don’t have.

*I initially mistyped VELMO which seems like something from an adult furry convention.
