Your Next Blockbuster – Robots Root 18 September 2018

So WHOOOOOP! The Captain Marvel trailer is almost 100% what I wanted and expected, in all the right ways. The only thing that gave me pause was that she didn’t affect a deeper vocal pitch. But then I realized that’s a sexist concept anyway, mostly carried over from what i liked about how Gal Gadot sounds as Wonder Woman. THOUGHTS after the requisite three viewings, as Lung and I are wont to do:

  • I love the 10 in the Marvel Studios logo. Great subtlety and knowing nod to their legacy.
  • I love the focus on HER in Hero in the text work
  • I love the tallness of this poster, implying space, flight, potential, even the hanger imagery works with the logo on it. LOVE this poster so much it hurts
  • I love the invasion claxon in the music. I hope this is the final score. I follow the composer on IG and she’s great. This effect works SO well, and it’s one of the first Marvel scores that immediately stuck with me. That’s huge.
  • Punching out Skrull gramma
  • De-aged Fury and Poulson, though they’ve kept Hill from us for now
  • Focus on her, not the Skrulls, other than one glimpse
  • What a clever thing: ‘this isn’t an origin story’… I never expected that she would land on earth and unlock memories of her past. It’s a subversion of the trope
  • KREE HELMETS seen

Bonus: WHAT IS THIS CAT OR SOMETHING DOING IN THE CORNER

So yay, that was a treat for this week…Plus, you know who her fellow Air Force pilot is, right?

Meanwhile, also in space, this might be happening:

  • I like these Auto-Complete Interviews usually. I like watching them improvise. Sometimes they really surprise you. Frequently, less so. That said, something’s up with Olivia Munn’s mouth. She grew extra teeth, or a Tom Cruise tooth, or she’s wearing Invisalign, or she was always a poor annunciator and was well rehearsed on G4. Dunno. This part was good though: “Football players always lie about their height. (They lie about a lot of things.)”; By contrast, watching one like Mila Kunis and Justin Theroux reinforced my minor obsession with the former, and opened my eyes further to the humble charm of the latter, whim I’ve always liked but never really seen casually speaking.
  • I’m sure this is indirectly just one more reason Lung hates bees or bee-like things.
  • I am not a Hawkeye hater. I quite like him in the films. And his (and her) solo book over the last some odd years has been a high mark. This video suggests that Hawkeye’s success rate in the films is one of the most potent on the team. Love it.
  • Prospect continues to be high on my anticipation list. I didn’t watch this trailer, because I’m now on lockdown, but here.
  • What cracked me up about this, as it always does, was ‘Killmonger, WHO WAS RIGHT, …’ in the header. Because he was.
  • I’m sure this is indirectly just one more reason Lung hates spiders or spider-like things.
  • I like the idea of multiple Angels and multiple Bosleys.
  • The new movie may be imploding, but here’s a great video on the Winston folks trying to make the first suit work back in the day. I only recently saw the concept work and the early prototype, which i liked apparently much more than any other human whose seen it, and I’ve been vocal about what I see as the mediocrity in the Predator design (which causes Lung to generally want to smack a bitch up) but there’s no question it was interesting and technically challenging work. (I just wanted less rubbery hands and feet)…
  • Look, I don’t even drink tea, particularly, but now I’m hellbent on one for a coffee mug. This is amazing.
  • I’m only half way through this list, but as Lung recently saw and, like me, liked Solo, I thought I’d post it. You can hear me defend this film against two haters on the current episode of Robot-Kraken Pod in fact.
  • An interesting treatise on why Bryan Singer should not be doing Red Sonja, or anything else really… that goes beyond the post-#metoo entitlement.
  • Something ironic here: this peak Venom poster is zzzzzzzz inspiring like everything about this hot mess, except for the tongue, which is the only thing i like about the design. So many deep, pulsating purple taste buds going on. I loved, in the link, the reference to the ‘impossible accent’ as well.
  • I’m enjoying how Todd Phillips is trolling fans. I hope he trolls all the way to the film’s launch. ‘here’s a Joker film that is nothing like anything you asked for. You’re welcome.’ although Coppola backing out of producing isn’t a super great sign. For the record, I’m 100% behind this film, because I’m not a big continuity baby.
  • 22 things learned about one of the Punisher films I didn’t see.

MAH MAN – Robots Root 19 July 2018

Look, I’m as surprised as you are. I LIKE the classic colors here. What a (rare) successful update of a golden age look! The other statues show details from the costumes that I quite like as well. More, including the costumes on display at SDCC here.

Also, dig the BRINE KING yall.

Meanwhile,

  • Comcast, bless their cold, vindictive hearts, caved and dropped out of their bidding for Fox’s assets. They were mostly after the sports division, I think. But still. The idea of Fox and Comcast being connected displeased me. It was like a landfill filled with corpses. Metaphorically.
  • Shile ST4 having a female crewperson added, a female villain, and a female director, are all welcome things… I’m still not sure about dredging up Kirk’s pappy. Unless he were UNDEAD.
  • So stoked on the Umbrella Academy adaptation.
  • Remember when I was joking (so to speak) about how the Robin promo pic looked all grim and gritty, reminding me of the Snyderverse-version Robin uniform shown in B V S… well, it looks like they dove deep.
  • Meanwhile, the details about the Joker film sound pretty predictable to this guy. Fortunately Zazie Beatz will (presumably) be in it so thats a reason to see it anyway.
  • In this skit about Batman trying to join the cool kids Avengers table, I liked how the laughter from the audience dipped a bit once Andy as Robin started shredding the Marvel characters.
  • James Gunn being fired from GOG3 over his well-established early jack-ass tweets, which were previously cleared by Disney… this is beyond strange and frankly smacks of pandering. Especially given this was all known and resolved prior, and had been dredged up by conservatives in response to his political attacks on the Trump Administration. So, more to the point and less about politics, scandal was created to silence a voice. One more casualty of the current hypocrisy.

Finally, I leave you with a successful piece of targeted marketing for this guy:

Get this Man a Facet Tool – Robots Root 11 May 2018

Disappointed at the lack of attribution, but this is my current desktop, and I used it in our latest Robot-Kraken Podcast. So good.

  • Looking forward to American Animals, as one does.
  • I’m 100% on board with whatever regarding Birds of Prey, honestly.
  • Thinking about the future of the franchise, what ‘big event’ could replace Avengers movies? I think this is a maguffin, because the narrative had bled into other films already, such as the last two most amazing Captain America films. I was thinking about this last night. Maybe ‘Secret Wars’? Not the stitched-together battle planet, but rather the idea that the heroes and villains would be shunted into an environment forcing them to organize and fight their way out. I can see this fusing concepts from the original Secret Wars, Champions, and frankly, a good dose of what we got from Thunderbolts and Exiles: versions of characters pulled from the multiverse. Makes sense to this guy!
  • This is HIGH TREASON.
  • Donald Glover got wonderfully weird on SNL. But this novelization of the backstory of Lando is even weirder.
  • Captain Marvel already has a very intriguing cast… but they just added Annette Bening, and I’m even more intrigued.
  • Look: I’m horrified by the project, but I LOOOOVE her honesty. Legit.
  • Ron Howard + Arrested Development + Star Wars. Gold! Marketing at its best.
  • Listen, I have too much stuff, and I’m trying to get less stuff. But I’m really having trouble resisting this.
  • TAKE MY MONEY (that I don’t have)
  • I haven’t finished Clone Wars and haven’t started Rebels (kids too young) but this is very interesting to me, stylistically.
  • Everything about this. EVERYTHING. Thanks to C Ferrren for finding it…
  • Jon Favreau’s new SW series will take place during the first years of peace in the New Republic. Interesting territory for the show, I think.
  • While I understand WHY Syfy is dropping the Expanse (bad deal they made) I will just say that this better get picked up by Netflix, fast.
  • Here’s that teaser for Predator that came out yesterday. Optimism abounds, more on Kris’ side than mine. But still, love the cast. Here’s a snap of the current Predator design, in all of it’s sizzlechest, tall headed glory.
  • All the behind the scenes business is done, and Rick and Morty will be back for… 70 EPISODES… FFS that’s good news.
  • 355 is an all-female spy thriller, which is 100% better news than whatever was happening the day before it was revealed to be happening. The cast.
  • LEGO car building factory awesomeness…

And with that, a reminder to listen to our latest episode of Robot-Kraken, and in general, you know, fear not and be just…

Legend Has it – Robots Root 15 June 2017

Black Panther rules everything around me.

In third place (because BP needed two), we have Robot’s Root for 9 June 2017:

  • Interesting that Blomkamp feels that Chappie is his most personal, best film, but that Elysium wasn’t that great. I felt the opposite.
  • I need more Stranger Things in my life. Immediately. Thessalhydra or not.
  • Ugh, American remake of Misfits. UGH.
  • An absolutely fascinating look at the true history behind Dr. Poison’s life mask in Wonder Woman.
  • Now YOU can own Bill Paxton’s armor from Aliens. I mean, how could you live without this.
  • All this recent talk from Chris Evans about signing on beyond his contract and how Infinity War would change the MCU etc etc: yes, we get it. Cap is getting assassinated.
  • I love how Ian McShane talks up Deadwood every 6 months and how it’s in HBO’s hands. I mean, YEAH, but still, I’d rather see actual progress on the project.
  • Useful.
  • Interesting that Olivia Munn isn’t yet signed up for the new X-Men film (she was woefully underutilized in the last one) but VERY interesting that supposedly Jessica Chastain is being courted for Lilandra of the Shi-ar. I LOVE THE CONCEPT.
  • Shioli Kutsuna has been cast in Deadpool 2. So many options here. Lady Deathstrike sounds like one, but given her Wolverine and X-Men pedigree, seems an odd choice.
  • Try to imagine John Lithgow as the Joker. I can. Wow.
  • Check out this rad Big Trouble in Little China project.

OK, go run your jewels, whils Kris and I prepare for Wizard World Sacramento!

Shes a Good Secretary – 3 November 2016

Image
ITEM: This new trailer is really good. It lays out the structure of the film and the nature of the Amazonians and their relationship, at least somewhat, to the outside world, and established WW’s conflict with both the world and her own people. Also more amazing up and over leg kicks and knee scrapers and sword swipeys and that great bullet deflection in the alley and Pam doing her kung fu and…Image
well, of course, for me the highlight was this shot of the villain. SYMBOLISM!
via

Meanwhile…

Image
ITEM: I think it’s positively criminal that it’s taken this long for Talia Al Ghul to appear in some sort of live action continuity. I’m not discounting Marion Cotillard’s Miranda… that was a great element to the story, but I mean the Talia from the comics, a trained fighter, eventual mother of Damian Wayne…
via

:::

Image
ITEM: I sure like the idea that we can go for smaller films after Infinity Tole. I don’t know that that’s exactly what he means, but I do believe the group films can stand to not be global extinction events every time.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Christian reviewer warns Doctor Strange is, like Dungeons & Dragons, a gateway to satanism. I love it. IM THERE! Monday night in fact.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: I don’t know the book series, but I liked some of what I saw. Supposedly it’s just a delay based on the post-production schedule, but hopefully that’s ALL it is.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: I’m pre-sold, but still!
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Lung turned me onto this one. Simply brilliant. Haw did it take this long?? Reminds me of my old Nixon watch. But rad.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Titanfall 2 is another game I bought on concept alone, even though I don’t have time to play generally. I haven’t unwrapped it. But they added single player story mode to mech combat both in and out of the mech, AND it’s now on PS4 so I had to. This concept art spread is delightful.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: I may or may not have shuttered the bike news for TLTC these days, but check this out:
via

:::

Image
ITEM: This.
Predator…”plunks the deadly alien hunter, who audiences have seen fight in jungles, concrete jungles, frozen wastelands and alien planets, in the harsh environment of … suburbia.”
Also, as if the film needed the extra juice, Olivia Munn was cast as a ‘scientist’. That’s why I show her in glasses, you see.
via

Image
Also, speaking of the MUNN EFFECT, I was also pre-sold on Office Party, as we talked about when the first trailer came out, but since I laugh EVERY TIME Vance plummets to his probable death, I take it that’s a good sign that ALL THE REST OF THE AWESOME is good. Yet, the best part is once again Kate McKinnon.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: David Leitch is a rumored replacement for Tim Miller on Deadpool. I love John Wick. It’s interesting though, that it’s equally hard to envision his style applied to Deadpool farce as it was Tim Miller going ‘stylized’ and abandoning the fun parts. Dunno. This article Lung sent me, about Junkie XL leaving the project in solidarity, which I can respect if nothing else.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Lastly, I love the concept of an FPS maker FINALLY having the cojones to put a no-respawn mode into one of these games. THAT’s a challenge.
via

More Expensive Than the Armor Itself – 18 Oct 2016

Image

Buried in the bottom third of this article-ette: I hadn’t somehow noted until now that RDJR is purportedly getting $100M PER MOVIE for the next two Avengers films… and one assumes that is on top of the massive back end deal. Good for that guy.
via

Meanwhile…

Image
ITEM: Speaking of RDJR, they set up a full-on writer’s room for Sherlock 3, which is unusual. Probably if nothing else a good sign that they want to cook the best script they can for the next piece.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: New photos have emerged from Alien: Covenant. Now, yes, there are new Xenomorphs and yes, one has a yuck mouth with human teeth in it, and yes, there are very familiar designs for the egg sacs and such… but I’d like to point out that this Facehugger has a massive anus. And that it appears to be YOOGE, judging by those skulls for scale. The Facehugger, not the anus. Well, both. Happy Friday.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Talk about a good sport… this cracked me up…
via

:::

Image
ITEM: I’m nauseated by how the sexist minority of male-dominated comic fanboys debased themselves to the point that writer Chelsea Cain quit Twitter and probably left Marvel. Her Mockingbird series is still a few years out, at the rate I’m reading, but I’ve seen excerpts and it reminds me a lot of Faction’s Hawkeye: unconventional storytelling, great characterization, and novelist-style approach to comic scripting. Apparently an independent, divorced, ass-kicking female spy was too much for that contingent… even before she wore this shirt on the cover of the last issue. Madness. Fortunately a healthy host of creators have been pushing hard on this in social media, showing solidarity towards her, and the ongoing changes to the comics world that have seen a greater number of female written, female led books (particularly at Marvel) than ever before. For my daughter’s, AND my son’s sake, we need more of this.
via

:::

Image
Image
Finally, the best of this concept ever done. EVER. Well-played, Don.

Here’s another example:

He is No Monster! He is a Human Being! – 18 Oct 2016

Image
When Stephen Merchant was cast in Wolverine I was a little bit stymied. I feared a comic relief character was imminent. But this looks AWESOME. Caliban!
via

Meanwhile, this:

Image
ITEM: A few blips about what happens next for young Holland’s Spidey. Sequels? future Avengers films? I MEAN YES COME ON.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: One of the best new Lego kits in a while. It’s perfect in every way. I love the 4-in-a-row torpedo seating.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Now is your chance to get the prosthetic for the Emporer’s noggin from his first appearance (played by Rick Baker’s wife, apparently, which I did not know. Not nerd enough)
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Thanks to this kick-ass licensing deal, you will be able to order 3D kits of your Starfleet ships of choice, complete with custom designation. SICK! My Reliant dreams are renewed!
via

:::

Image
ITEM: FINALLY A SW R/C THING I CAN GET BEHIND.
via[/url

:::

Image
ITEM: I present, 11 minutes of alternate artist interpretations of the 60’s Spidey cartoon credits. It’s EVERYTHING.
[url=https://vimeo.com/187255111]via

:::

Image
ITEM: I don’t like this new canon reasoning for the red Sith lightsaber. Wasn’t the Force supposd to require balance? Why would kyber crystals only bond with ‘Light Side’ Force sensitives?
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Fear of heights or fear of deaths? Then don’t watch.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Bladerunner by way of MS PAINT, because internet.

Now THATS a Bell – 13 Oct 2016

Image
These guys apparently have the license from Dark Horse to make these wonderful things. LOOK AT THE BELL. WANT THE BELL.
via
I actually pre-ordered this. I find myself at a point in my life where i have use for a rad bell.

Meanwhile, many things have happened since we went to the Alternative press Expo this past weekend. Here are some of them, for science…

Image
ITEM: Wasp has been confirmed for the next Avengers film after Infinity War. This coincides with the location of the Ant-Man and Wasp film in the production schedule.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: This deep dive nerd research into the extent of Luke Cage’s invulnerability over the years in the books was pretty cool. I especially, of course, enjoyed watching him damage Iron Man’s chestplate.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Lots of Wolverine 3 buzz came out of NYCC. The poster with the long fingers was released late last week, then lots of speculation about who Boyd Holbrook would be playing, if Richard E. Grant has been assumed to be playing some version of Mister Sinister. According to this snap, he’s apparently going to be some (theoretically more interesting film version of) Donald Pierce, a cyborg Hellfire Club dude. Im just looking forward to an old, less resilient Wolvie pushing a senile Professer X around in a wheelchair.
via

:::

Image
EDIT: You KNOW you always wanted a 12″ Snake-Eyes… in a properly upscaled blister pack, at an unfortunately upscaled price.
via

:::

Image
EDIT: The John Wick 2 trailer was released, and it looks like John Wick, which is a good thing. The poster, however, is a GREAT thing.
via and
via

Image
EDIT: The big buzz release for NYCC was the sizzle reel celebrating the primary film production wrap on Justice League. This was actually a pretty strategic attack intended to push how much everyone is having fun. I have no problem with that. Affleck looks really good as Batman leading the League, and I see no mullets. I see more women (maybe Mera) and there’s a GREAT Batman leap that is quite referential to the comics. Overall, what I appreciated most was that it wasn’t spoilery. Second most: Justice League in an elevator.

Best part for me: grinding away on those arm bands. Gal Gadot and grinding… I mean…
Image
via

:::

Image
EDIT: The news that Sigourney Weaver is going to be in Defenders was AWESOME. She hasn’t formerly been confirmed as the villain, but let’s hope.
via

Image
Somewhat more polarizing was the new Iron Fist full trailer. I thought it was on model with the tone and look of the other Marvel netflix shows, and I like what I’m seeing so far. For me, it’s all about the sick iron fist FX. When it glows from within, and when he takes the steel door down, I feel like I’m seeing them do comic book style powers justice in live action. It looks good. Still not thrilled about the hair. But I’m trusting. I trust.
via

Image
ITEM: So, Ellis is relaunching Wildstorm (I think) still within the DCU that absorbed the imprint prior, now called the Wild Storm… I have no feelings about this really, because I’m not thrilled with most of the post-DC-sale changes and vibe for those characters, but I DO like the design work I’m seeing, pushing them largely into street clothes.
Thus:

via

:::

Image
ITEM: Finally, here’s a shot of Mera from Justice League.
via

That’s all for now… APE post-mortem forthcoming, though Kris is still traveling and I’m catching up with work, so it’ll be a spell before we have it ready, both in podcast and write-up form…

RIP C Martin Croker – 21 September 2016

Image
C. Martin Croker passed away recently in his 50s. He was, among other things, the voice of both Moltar and Zorak from SG:C2C. In honor of his passing, please enjoy my favorite episode “Flipmode” featuring a pre-steroids Busta Rhymes as the guest, and lots and lots of blueberries.
via

Meanwhile:

Image
ITEM: Honest Trailer for TMNT2… I didn’t see the film, I may never see the film, but this was worth a watch.
via

::

Image
ITEM: I have a lot of trouble with the Infinity War thing. The problem is that these big budget supers films have all had world shattering, universe destroying stakes… even Suicide Squad had a planetkiller engine in it. So it’s hard to see Thanos as being a take-your-breath-away scale of bad guy. To have him sucking up souls and throwing the Infinity Gauntlet around in order to woo Death? If true, it feels, at least in summary, as too pedestrian. I don’t know WHAT you do for a galactic super-SUPER-dustup movie. I trust those guys, and I trust Marvel, so I remain optimistic, but I dunno. I have ideas, sort of spawned by the multiversal-collapse thing that Marvel comics had going on a few years ago…
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Josh Gad is developing Toy Wars for Amazon. I’m so down. I’m the target market, absolutely. Surprising no one.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Welp, the project Neil Blomkamp has been e-teasing turns out to be a 15th anniversary special new short for the BMW Driver film series, which is pretty cool, actually. It’s the second best anything Clive Owen ever did.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: I was wary of Jumanji 2… but I like the cast a LOT. Like, the entire cast. So that’s a thing.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: I had no idea every frame of Black Panther in Civil War was a CGI overlay. We saw so much live footage of filming in costume, so that’s interesting. I haven’t watched the commentary yet, but I wonder what happened with Vision. We’ve seen a lot of him in full makeup being filmed, suggesting he’d be at least partly practical FX…
via

:::

Image
ITEM: While I’m still disappointed Star Wars: Battlefront doesn’t include a story mode, I AM chuffed about the Death Star pack. I’ll give it a try, circa 2032.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: A sketchy company in Turkey has your 1:1 scale Transformer needs sorted. Click through for the video…
via

:::

That’s all for today. Kris and I are pushing hard to get ready for the Alternative Press Expo in San Jose in a few weeks. A new episode of the Robot-Kraken podcast went live yesterday, featuring our con report of Rose City CC 2016. And we have been making stuffs.
