Just Wingin It – Robots Root 25 July 2018

OHAI DAUGHTERS OF DRAGONS

Meanwhile, this:

  • I still can’t wrap my head around the fact that Williamson is developing ANOTHER show for Hulu starring the ex husband of the star of his current show. But anyway. Space. I’m in.
  • I’m cool with Sivana not being a mad scientist, which was much more proto-Superman.
  • Dungeons and Doggos. You’re welcome.
  • The one GoT spin-off to make the cut to series is set in the very distant past of this continuity, which on the one hand makes the most sense (otherwise why not just keep telling THIS story; I don’t know how we’re supposed to end with a few final long eps, big winter and zombie army and death everywhere, whith any sort of closure at this point) but it DOES run the risk of feeling more Lord of the Ringsish/generic fantasy. We’ll see.
  • Expanse S04 I cannot wait I cannot FACKING WAIT.
  • I may have posted this before, but it’s a great article exploring how Always Sunny has become more and more progressive even as it remains raucous and offensive. I personally think these ‘progressive’ moves in the story are to piss off just another subset of viewers, which i love.
  • My first time seeing the SDCC poster for Godzilla. Pretty dope, and brand aware. Kris was stunned on the podcast the other night that Ghidora is not my favorite monster, for reasons.
  • I feel like this supposed possible casting interest for Batwoman is a bit on the nose. As I’ve babbled on the podcast several time: it must be Jane Levy.

  • I’m toling you. Well, Batgirl anyway. Batwoman, whose to say.
  • Oh come ON. I get the legacy behind this easily most-famous-giant-robot-anime but it’s just Star Wars, u guise. Not rocket science.
  • We spoke a bit about the James Gunn firing controversy on the podcast we recorded the other day, and referenced Bobcat Goldthwait. Here’s that story. Then yesterday, Dan Harmon is off twitter due to dredged up comedy material he wrote years ago.
  • Apparently Ryan Reynolds originally hoped to play Wally West. SUCH a better fit than Green Toleyou.
  • And now Frances Conroy is on board Joker?
  • yes please.

Thats all for today . Off to go measure my groffice for that new carpet…

You Have 3 Seconds to Comply: Robots Root 11 April 2018

Dig this new Mondo poster: ROBOCOP by Josan Gonzalez

Meanwhile, in space, all of this is happening right now!

  • Taika Waititi confirmed that he’s not adapting the Akira film, but rather going after the voluminous book series. I find that interesting. There’s so much more THERE there, and also gives him more to do than just a remake.
  • Speaking of ambitious, Apple is adapting the I, Robot series of works from Isaac Asimov.
  • Woody Harrelson may or may not be playing Carnage in the Venom film. I say DO IT.
  • Transformers cartoon opening credits, shot with the toys in stop-motion WINNNNNNS.
  • The Deadwood film production just got a tax credit. This gives them a timetable, which is a good thing.
  • Christina Hodson has been named as the new Batgirl writer. This is also a good thing.
  • Boss Level sounds really neat or really terrible.
  • If you want to know secret stuff that isn’t surprising stuff, regarding Iron Spidey in Avengers: Infinity War, read on. In other Marvel news, I think this poster shot shows that Evangeline Lily should have been a Marvel heroine years and years ago. She looks really motivated.
  • Eric Bana is set to star in the first season of Dirty John, some sort of anthology-based true crime show on Bravo that isn’t True Detective on HBO, and inexplicably features a character name as the title, which begs questions about it’s anthology nature.
  • This is pissing all the right people off: Westworld creators said they’d let Reddit superfans in on the active development of S02, which starts later this month… they announced a few days ago that their plan was to circumvent the huge hunt for answers and easter eggs and spoilers by actually giving the subreddit access to a video that explains the S02 plot, so they can opt-in if desired, as long as they keep it to themselves and don’t leak it to mainstream press. Then last night they released a video, which ended up being an elaborate Rick-Roll… LITERALLY… I love it. Speaking of, you know I’m down with S02’s Shogunworld.
  • The Shazam costume may or may not be objectively bad… but I liked Zachari Levi’s comments about the intrinsic insecurity of pre-haters.
  • I was totally into it, until I realized the pilot’s legs are fake and its just a stilt construct. I mean, not JUST, but you know.
  • Moviepass users (aka Deeply Dapper) rejoice: AMC theaters were just unlocked. That’s pretty huge.
  • The BBC is launching a big budget early 20s adaptation of War of the Worlds. I’m 300% on board…
  • I initially dismissed Bosslogic’s manip of Krasinski and Blunt as Reed and Sue of the FF as being too current, given the obsession with their current film… but looking at it more closely, I’d be down with all of these casting ideas. I still think Richards needs to be older, greying and aloof… but even more than that, they need to be a believable couple… and this pair have proven they can be, on screen…
  • More featurette film stuff from Isle of Dogs, this time about the real on-set canine crew….
  • Finally, trailer roundup:
    • The Meg, which I always assumed would be terrible, actually amused me. So much reminding me of Jaws 3 in 3D… but also Deep Blue Sea, which I actually never saw. I do love 4th wall characters like Rainn Wilson’s one here, just saying it like it is.
    • Similarly, I dismissed Upgrade when the teaser came out awhile back as being a B-movie… but it does have some interesting elements in it. Logan Marshall-Green affects an unusual stance when the AI is doing the fighting for him, almost a hangjawed expression and slouched neck against a rigid posture, but he was Shocker #1 in Homecoming and soldier X in Prometheus, so let’s give it a shot.
    • Terminal appears to be based on a pitch like: “Imagine Atomic Blonde but with Margot Robbie and made to look like Lock Stock plus we’ll include one of those actors even, for authenticity“… but I’m still on board.

It Doesnt Look Like Anything To Me – Robots Root 28 February 2018

So, Joss Whedon is out on the Batgirl project… and like Justice League, the reasons stated vs. the reasons behind the reasons, are cause for some speculation. What I find MORE intriguing, however, is the flood of capable, interesting female writers and directors doing open offers to make this project what it actually wants to be… and how DC/WB is  tone-deaf about it. The image above is mine, by the way. Thank you, thank you. Whedon’s original non-script was apparently to be based on a story from the late 60s, the quintessential pre-spine-shattering Batgirl… I would be interested in something a little more like the current comics, frankly.

[Image available as a sweet print by yours truly here.]

Meanwhile, in space:

  • I’m super into Anon, a new film from the director of Gattaca. I love the post-Soviet style and overlays of data. Amanda Seyfried is also killer (so to speak) as a brunette. This could be terrible. But I choose to believe.

  • Polar, an adaptation from a comic from Dark Horse, has been greenlit for Netflix. Spoiler alert: it appears to be the same plot as John Wick 3 will likely be, just with Mads Mikkelsen.
  • Francis Lawrence continues to talk up development on a BSG feature film nodding to both TV series (or both major ones) but going in a more ‘current’ direction… which I take to mean instead of apeing New Hope, it’ll ape whatever’s popular next year. HAR!
  • I appreciated how low-rez R2-D2’s Leia hologram was in Last Jedi, and it did appear to be the original one from New Hope, but I had no idea it was actually rendered more degraded for a 30 years later vibe. I thought it was just the old tech-in-star wars effect from the original film plus the meta old-tech-in modern-film disconnect… kind of meta meta.
  • I see a lot of great cosplays at the shows I do, but man, throw a pro photographer or two at them, and it’s even more impressive
  • Latest in video game interest from the guy who buys them but has no time to play them… Burnout Remastered is coming. LOOOOVE them Burnout games.
  • Which is better: bouquets of donuts, or Pennywise style donut delivery? Why choose!
  • PORG CAKE!
  • Some interesting interview material about Duncan Jones’ Mute, and how it morphed into a sci-fi film from its original noir underpinnings. I wish it was getting better reviews, but I’m still hot to see it.
  • I admit, I’m surprised: test screenings for Aquaman have rated very well, apparently featuring accomplished action sequences. Of course, almost all of these bug supers films have tested well early on because of the demographic for the pre-screening crowd. Justice League and BVS both tested extremely well, as did Age of Ultron.
  • Expanse S03 trailer is finally up, showing little, but readers have a good sense of the story. It’s a doozy.
  • Never enough Yondu
  • this was disturbing. Not surprising, but great to hear he was able to get help in that critical window, which is not common.
  • Did I talk about Outsider already? If so, disregard or nod in affirmation. If not, it’s a Netflix project involving Jared Leto playing a pilot in the 50s trapped in Japan and entering a Yakuza phase. For fun and profit! Looks amazing, to me.
  • Gemma Chan has been cast in the Captain Marvel film as the Kree spy Minn-Erva (hopefully with a name change somewhere down the line because COME ON)
  • First look at Shazam/Captain Marvel’s costume here. Looks very golden age.
  • Not too often that reshoots involve inserting an entirely new character
  • A heavily unsubstantiated rumor is that Winder Woman 2’s villain will be the Cheetah, played by… Emma Stone. Take that as you will. Where are the photomanips?!
  • The trailer for Wreck-It Ralph 2 trailer finally launched. Looks great of course… I admit I wish they weren’t using real app companies… Emoji ruined that forever.
  • Terry Goodkind is a dick.

Bonus: this video game to brief comic adaptation of Peggy Carter as Captain America reminds me of something…

Not the same, but close! And a good seller for me at shows, too…available here, since apparently today I’m just hawkin’ wares…

Haileys and Bumblebees – Robots Root 3 Jan 2018

The only three things I can find to be positive about Bumblebee: The Damn Movie are, in no particular order:

  1. No Michael Bay
  2. Bumblebee is a Bug FFS
  3. Hailey Steinfeld

Maybe that WAS the right order.

Robot’s Root!

  • This comparison between Force Awakens and the Knights of the Old Republic storyline was pretty good. Had I any knowledge of the latter, maybe I would have detected some of this. Or not.
  • Every time Neil Blomkamp posts concept art from his axe-murdered Alien 5 treatment, I get frustrated.
  • I know this isn’t the most popular opinion, but I for one would want to see those extra hours of Blade Runner 2049… speaking of which, Ridley Scott’s elder man ego is spinning out… these comments are nuts.
  • This quote from Guillermo del Toro was amusing mostly because he criticized the design. I feel him.
  • Rian Johnson is supposedly set to begin filming scenes for the new trilogy in 2018… without a script, or even a stated concept… so at most, I hope it’s establishing shot set pieces… I mean, a road is nice. I like roads.
  • The most obvious conclusion reached from the linkbait comments that ‘Thor will undergo a dramatic transformation in Infinity Tole’ is a loss of an arm, as per the comics some years back… I’d like to see Thanos rip a Thor arm off…
  • new octopus alert. ALERT!
  • Hailey Steinfeld wants to be Joss Whedon’s Batgirl, if these misleading interview comments are to be believed. I would not mind. She’s fit, athletic, has a great expressive face, and has been acting since she was a wee one (remember True Grit? Long before the pop singer phase)… I had a different fantasy casting for this role, but maybe we’ll get to that sometime in 2018 on the podcast if a couple of other rubes get their shit together…
  • On the heels of the failed Dark Universe, Paramount is hurtling forward with the Hasbroverse, announcing dates for GI Joe, Micronauts and others… despite not having scripts or a plan. Sounds about right. Dungeons and Dragons AGAIN. Guh.
  • Here’s an interview with Neal Scanlan about creature work on TLJ… if you are into that sort of thing, which I am…
  • I still can’t even with this fever dream. It might be great. Mortal Engines…
  • I have an intense need to clean up and sort this mess… while eating THIS, of course.
  • Lung and I traded finds in this vein… this was my favorite of the Star Wars ones. Still looking for the perfect Deckard one.
  • Mark L Smith has been tasked as writer for Tarantino’s Star Trek film… I mean… someone rubbed a lamp somewhere right?
  • I enjoy radical fan theories where the main character is dead. Works with almost any movie.
  • Would Darkseid have helped or hurt Justice League? I think, as Kevin Smith described it, it would have made an effective tether for the next film.
  • Great honest trailer about Return of the Toleyou… except for the grating mispronunciation of Maori…
  • The new Annihilation trailer is already showing too much. I’m on blackout. But I can’t wait.
  • They do look pretty New Mutanty… love the Lockheed puppet…
  • Cloverfield 3 comes out in April… but with no name yet and no promos. Which is fine. They played it fast and loose with the last “sequel”… I’m still on board, ESPECIALLY if it is indeed space based as rumored. The cast alone!
  • True Detective S03 is shaping up to be pretty exciting to this guy: three time periods, the Ozarks, now Dorff joins Ali? Damn

That’s all for today. Back to cooking them Porgs…

That Will Buff Out – Robot’s Root 28 Nov 2017

I am definitely the target market for a 1:1 scale mutilated and torched Vader helmet. Thanks!

That root, that sweet, sweet root (very minor JL spoilers below)

  • The interesting thing about this casting for Daredevil S03 isn’t the actor, who I’m sure is fine, but the idea that the role sheet alludes to Sin-Eater, which i would vastly prefer to Nuke being involved in a Born Again storyline.
  • I honestly feel like the superhero film mainstream acceptance has allowed smarter people than me to start slipping in solid cyberpunk projects without the snarky types noticing. Altered Carbon at Netflix??? Awesome.

  • What is even.
  • This video of Daisy Ridley being interviewed supposedly building a Lego Millennium Falcon is peak linkbait. It’s everywhere. Unfortunately, it fils for me in several ways.
    • Her mouth freaks me out
    • She laughs at herself a lot, but not in an endearing way
    • I like her in her roles more than as a human being interviewed, which isn’t often the case
    • She has a curious, if admirable in this oversexualized culture, obsession with stodgy, heavily-patterned clothing
    • And most importantly: she neither builds the Lego herself nor appears to really respect it. RESPECT THE LEGOS.
  • Do you know how much I approve of the concept of a Mendo Doctor Doom? 100% MINIMUM.
  • Lots of hyperbole over what does and doesn’t work in Justice League, and I’m saving my comments for the podcast overall. But one thing I thought I’d note here: some fans have clamored for a Zack Snyder cut to be released (which does not exist) and since he apparently ‘liked’ the petition, it has been taken to mean that it does, and should. I think he just liked the sentiment. Who wouldn’t? His son made comments about how the film was ruined by WB meddling and comedy, and I think that’s a valid position. It’s also a valid position to say that the original likely direction in Snydervision would be a disaster without the lighter tone pulled in by Whedon. The biggest legitimate criticism to be leveled against the finished project is that it feels, as you watch it, uneven enough that you detect when the hands change, like you’re watching two different films smashed together. For the record, I think the Whedon adjustments were a good idea. It is a messy landing, but it still lands as a more ‘superheroic’ film and frankly a lot of people were unhappy with the dark tone of the DCEU and wanted more of what they call the ‘Marvel’ vibe, but mean a more traditional, inspirational comic adventure experience. This is of course ironic as hell given that DC comics was traditionally about vanilla comic adventuring and marvel was borne from real-world, serious civic issues and told stories about relatable humans. That all said, a lot of what doesn’t work in the film is because of schedule, not an overarching ideological divide. They just needed more time. More time for finished FX, more time to properly pace and blend the two tones. Marvel movies can be both dark and comedic at the same time, both heroic and troubling. I’m looking at you, Russo Brothers. So, anyway, when I see all this Snyder vs. Whedon blamery over the film, it amuses me, because both voices are valid. And BTW I still like the darker DCEU tone just fine.
  • PS I also believe Joss Whedon is still actively working on a Batgirl film, and that the rumors of his dismissal are about as legit as the rumors of WB canceling the DCEU after JL… propaganda that came out over the weekend that didn’t do anyone any favors.
  • I like the look of some of the new designs, but the photoshoppery is killing me. Interns aren’t the answer to every chore. I do think we’re going to see alternate universe or post-reality manipulated versions of characters in A3 and A4 but we’ll have to wait and see.
  • Looking at these pics of a test suit unused in the final film (featuring a Kingdom Come style red-S) reminds me that I wish we saw a black suit in JL. Cavill teased it months back, and Zod’s look when he still had the cape was just B A D A S S S S S S S S.
  • Supposedly Gambit starts production in early 2018 after years of delays. Listen, I still think Channing Tatum is far better as a comedian than as a dramatic/action actor, though if they pull off the same sort of tone as he had in Logan Lucky, it could work. He’s risen in my book over the last year or so, and I’d LIKE to see this film happen, especially as a heist story, despite hating the character.

  • Now, Lizzy Caplan being involved is of course 99% why it could succeed. But hey. Bias.
  • I have a perverse love for seeing the voice actors recording dialog from cheesy animation.
  • Here’s some great cosplay (with all that fancy post work) of Ventress from the Clone Wars cartoon, a character on my to-draw list and one I’d love to have seen make it to film.

OK, that’s enough for today. Until next time, crush your darlings, and by darlings, I mean granpappy’s helmet!

Ah Said No Peekin – Robots Root 30 May 2017

Last night we completed another session of the Robot-Kraken Podcast recordings for inclusion in the June episode. Special guests! Special liquors! Hot messes!

In the meantime, however, this is Robot’s Root for 30 May 2017:

  • I was talking with One Lung this morning (or typing) about films we’re looking forward to, beyond all the obvious marquee stuff coming out, and that led me back to trailers. So here, have some, for science:  Trailer 1: Baby Driver
  • Trailer 2: Logan Lucky. “ah said no PEEKIN!”
  • Trailer 3: Hitman’s Bodyguard
  • BONUS: Shimmer Lake on Netflix. IN!
  • This supposed brief on the new Silver and Black disaster-in-waiting Sony is cooking up for their Spider-Man Universe Without Marvel or Spider-Man or Something sounds sketchy. Like fanfic stuff.
  • Surprising precisely no one, SW VIII has been postponed while they violently rewrite the entire thing.
  • First look at Lockjaw from Inhumans: yep, giant bulldog. Missing the signature tuning fork and collar though, which is weird. So many weird choices on this project. I still haven’t recovered from the wig.
  • A little less than a month to go and we’ll have new Preacher. YASS.
  • In another (rather odd) example of studios remaking instead of building anew, Amazon just bought a series based on the film Hannah which (I haven’t seen, actually) I hear is based on every other young teen orphan assassin trope. Not that I don’t want to see the film. But I’d rather see original content greenlit.
  • The thicken plots… possibly… now they are admitting Joss Whedon has been quietly working on JL for awhile. This could be a sign that they knew and were planning to transition Snyder stepping down on a schedule, OR that he was already on board for script/shooting corrections. I do think it’s no coincidence that he was randomly announced as the writer/director of Batgirl this spring…
  • I’m half-way through the current glorious season of Silicon Valley, and I can’t conceive of the next season moving forward without TJ Miller. Dammit.
  • Really odd one here: Rosario Dawson is supposedly being courted for the role of Dr. Ceclia Reyes in the New Mutants film. It feels… fan speculationish… given that she’s already in the Marvel Universe (one of them) as a nurse… but hey, +1 always works for me.

And with that, I’m off to see if I can scrape some of this rum off of the inside of my cranial cavity…

Three Mix Tapes Are the Proper Quantity of Mix Tapes – 21 April 2017

Well, good news if you are a Guardians fan… James Gunn is writing and directing the third film. That’s the longest contiguous production in Marvel’s history. I love it.

Robot’s Root, 21 April 2017:

  • ‘Those people who said this was as good as Empire must really be into file formats’ cue Saw throwing stink eye at his thumb drive. Pretty Honest. THEIR WEAKNESS TO STICKS.
  • Great study on ‘What Makes Always Sunny Still Funny’… I mean, YEAH, but I never really thought about how well defined the family lives of the characters were in forming their individual character traits.
  • Earthling Cinema explains The Arrival, I movie I loved, but not as much as this explanation of it.
  • Ian McShane threw HBO under the bus, saying they already have a Deadwood shooting script. GOD DAMN IOT!
  • If you enjoy Game of Thrones, and if you enjoy generating fan theories about WTF, then you may enjoy this Fan Theory Generator. I tried it out. Legit:

Petyr Baelish is secretly dead

Who wants Sansa dead? Cersei, who believes that she had a part in Joffrey’s murder. Who has been spending a lot of time with Sansa lately? Petyr Baelish. It’s possible that Cersei has sent a Faceless Man after Sansa, and this Faceless Man has killed Petyr and taken his face. He fed Sansa to the Boltons because he was dead certain (spot the pun!) that she wouldn’t survive them. She did, so now he’s hatched Plan B of being right next to her in Winterfell so that he can finally eliminate her.

  • No gusto, but I’m not the target market for a teen soap Cloak and Dagger show.
  • Best quote about why it’s better Jeff Goldblum isn’t in blueface in Thor: Ragnatole:
Goldblum has transcended acting to that place where he’s invited to films to basically be himself. Making him blue, while comics accurate, would have just put an artificial barrier between us and what is surely going to be an epic performance.
  • From Lung: The Kraken Piescraper. YUSSSS
  • You may not be the target market, but as someone who routinely plays Hans Zimmer soundtracks nearly every day, I’m disappointed to find out he actually brought the orchestra to SF when I wasn’t looking. Previously when the tour was announced it was only select cities. Anyway, I’d have definitely sprung for it. Check out the Inception performance at Coachella, otherwise known as the Burning Man for Rich Hollywood Types Who Dont Realize The Organizer Funds Anti LGBT Organization and Is Linked to the Kochs.
  • 10 more X-Files will be X-Filing away in the near future. Let’s hope they’re the good kind.
  • A rejiggered Passengers that may solve some plot points. Did I post this? Anyway I liked the film anyway. But here.
  • Much is being made of Joss Whedon saying he’s obsessed with Barbara Gordon’s ‘damage’ that led her to becoming so hardcore as Batgirl, which I think is a misnomer. He was saying it in the context of: what drives a young woman without a tragic past to enter this life, in the absence of the default everyone’s-a-superhero comics world? Not damage so much as drive. But since Gordon is linked to Killing Joke (which, at least temporarily, ENDED her Batgirl role) it immediately means everyone assumes Whedon will make Gordon a survivor of something. On the other hand, one of the best things about the Batgirl Year One series several years ago was that it effectively showed Barbara setting out as Batgirl because she wanted the thrill and the freedom. It was FUN. I’d love to see that on film.
  • The pedigree for Captain marvel is getting interesting. One writer from GoG, one from Inside Out, and co-indie directors from Mississippi Grind.
  • Mireille Enos, Greg Kinnear and Steve Buscemi have joined ‘Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams’ which adds some heft to the anthology series…

  • Lastly, I leave you with this. See you in the bunker.

Robots Root – The Batgirl We Need 30 Mar 2017

Welcome to today’s edition of Robot’s Root, your 3,333rd source for standard nerd news of the moment!

Up top, in a surprise announcement via Variety, Joss Whedon is set to write and direct a Batgirl solo film. The deal isn’t done, but still, that we hadn’t heard anything about it until now is pretty impressive as far as Hollywood scuttlebutt goes.

Meanwhile, in space… this:

– I previously expressed some concern that the third prequel in the Planet of the Apes series looked bland compared to the first two… this trailer gives me more to chew on. I’m fascinated by Bad Ape and a few of the others. New trailer released today…

– Ladies and Gentlemen: Australian Sharknado!

Interesting read on the new MST3000 relaunch, starring a few familiar faces…

– Santa Clarita Season 2? CHECK!

– Here’s some largely unsubstantiated talk about Jordan Peele being courted for Akira, now. I mean hey, could happen.

– Welp, supposedly Brad Pitt was close to Cable for Deadpool 2, as evidenced by solid concept art and a quick takedown notice. But now Leitch said schedule issues pushed him out. However, Michael Shannon recently noted he wasn’t interested. Hm.

Silicon Valley in one month YAASSSSSSSSS!

This of course isn’t the first large scale photorealistic genre sculpture we’ve seen, but man, how many of these will be perched suspiciously in very wealthy nerd hideouts… for untoward attention purposes… admittedly it’s odd that it is less of a likeness of her than many products under the half-a-Yugo-in-1991 price point…

Christina Hobson has been tapped to write the Harley film. But it’s now officially a ‘women of the DC Universe’ film. I wonder if that will survive the development process. In truth, I do think Harley works better in a group dynamic. But I was hoping for a Harley and Joker on the lam story, tying in other villains and heroes but from their narrative perspective.
