Science isn’t Real! – Robot’s Root 9 Aug 2018

As a lover of both the old Aquateen Hunger Force series, and of surrealism, this made my day yesterday. Several times. [Shaking fries in there]…though this was sobering, indeed. Sadly, tangentially related.

Meanwhile, within the collider, something emerges:

  • Super down with Slaughterhouse Rulez. Pegg and  do great stuff and I like the tone of this. Casting is spot on, too.
  • As an old C64 user (previous, and aged, both) I love it. I’m surprised it isn’t some Raspberry Pi machine at this point…
  • I mean, they could do worse

  • I appreciate what they are trying to do here, goring each other and having the symbiotes reform quickly… but I’d like to never see the hero vs. themselves design ever ever ever again. Thanxxx. At least Topher is graceful about it.

  • I DO quite like The Black Mask. I need to finish some art for this character, in fact.
  • Posted about my enthusiasm for Maniac the other day after the teaser… but hot damn now that the full trailer is out I’m going to just sit here and hold my breath and wait for the release of the series. And drink coffee. I mean. But DAMN.
  • This just makes me want to see The Zazie Beetz Show again. Which is of course the point of blooper reels.

Finally, these are sage rules. SAGE rules.

Speaking of Sticky Strands – Robots Root 7 Aug 2018

I like the Japanese poster Venom more than the trailer Venom. All those sticky strands holding the jaw together…

Speaking of sticky strands, THE NEWS:

  • Vantablack rules everything around me…
  • Good buzz coming out regarding Daredevil S03 coming this fall. I’m into it.
  • In the last year I’ve read three or four articles talking about the business of maintaining old CRT arcade machines. Pretty interesting. Outrun was definitely my jam.
  • Disney doesn’t appear to be responding to calls for Gunn’s return. I’m liking that Dave Bautista has taken a career-risking step further and thrown serious shade at Disney about it.
  • The John Wick and 300 folks are working on an Alcatraz movie. I THINK I’m into it. I don’t enjoy prison films, but I do like pressure cookers with some trickery.
  • What I find most interesting about Alex Garland’s new project is the casting. Sonoya made quite an impression on him… and me, of course. Plus, RON!
  • Shogun is coming back, and I’m all for that.
  • Lots of Birds of Prey casting rumors… which all sound fine. I did like Bosslogic’s Black Canary. I mean, I think I do?
  • UGH UGH UGH with prequels that make no sense. Die Hard prequel??? The events of the first film created the character (and it should have been a done in one)… we don’t need a prequel. And 24?? I mean, come on. Of course, I make an exception for Batman. But only if we never see any MAH PARENTS ARE DEADDDDD moments.
  • CBS is gunning for all Trek, all the time. The fact that Patrick Stewart confirmed at the con that he’s coming back for the new show, featuring an older Picard, struck me as both interesting and exhausting shows to me that they really need to strike a new tone and perspective for this show to make it carry weight. Same producers and writers as the current crop of stuff, though. I don’t mind the idea of an older senior command Picard torn with difficult, ore realistic political problems… I’d like to see him weather gray area military issues (or non-military, depending on what version of Starfleet we’re even talking about) in a way TNG never did. Just no more ‘once more unto the breach! bullshit like the films. Let everyone be dead or older and retired. No away teaming. PLEASE.
  • Well, here’s Todd McFarlane critiquing the new Venom for you. Happy Tuesday.
  • Edward james Olmos cut from Predator? HOW DARE YOU SIR.
  • I’m down with Jessica Chastain’s new spy project. MOAR PLS!
  • Lung sent me this: the best papercraft Darth Vader bust ever. Not that I have time or inclination to make it, but I COULD.

Protect Ya Neck – Robots Root 18 July 2018

Man, I like Manta and Oceanmaster, although the latter feels naked without neck armor. I know the talk of today is the sea dragon upgrade and all… I also  like that Fisherman King design. I’m more interested in these other six undersea realms than I am in Aquaman and his false anti-buoyancy. United the seven, indeed.

Meanwhile, in space:

  • Look I don’t know much about Dr. Who, but apparently the new Doctor can generate pizza, so I’m in.
  • Always the eternal idealist, I like to believe, I CHOOSE to believe, the 48 stars were intentional. Like Robin’s armored tunic and little boy shorts. Snyder knew whats up!
  • The History Channel is releasing an Area 52 series called Project: Blue Book. Because history. Aiden Gillen is in it though, so i’m there.
  • I remain optimistic about Bumblebee, but uh, these are starting to look a bit familiar and complicated…
  • Gotta appreciate that first Meg poster. Almost makes up for the Photoshop disaster of the second one.
  • The Starcourt Mall! Best Stranger Things teaser ever. EVER.
  • I was only interested in this fan-made film news because of learning the excellent term… Ludonarrative dissonance: is the conflict between a video game’s narrative told through the story and the narrative told through the gameplay. Ludonarrative, a compound of ludology and narrative, refers to the intersection in a video game of ludic elements – or gameplay – and narrative elements. Thats useful in my daily life! Somehow.
  • Hmmm… Marvel better get that A-Force movie together soon. If DC botches an all-female supers film first, it could become harder to get it pushed through.
  • How surreal is it that The First will feature Sean Penn (it’s a Mars colonization story) but from the creator of House of Cards, featuring his acrimonious ex-wife situation?
  • I like this Lego DB5 build even more than the MINI and the VW Type II, both of which felt hampered by the system’s challenges with compound curves.
  • I can’t tell if Patient Zero is a good movie or a bad movie, but I like intelligent, creepy zombies, and I like the conceit that Matt Smith’s character can talk to zombies only because he was once bitten, but not turned. Seems like the sort of reveal that would have been better in the film itself, rather than the trailer… the thing about music bothering zombies is interesting, too.
  • If Batwoman goes forward, it will be groundbreaking. Assuming executives don’t meddle.
  • While I’m REALLY tired of humanoid aliens in Star Trek, Discovery seems to have landed a second interesting design that outshines it’s TV budget.
  • I love Pena, but I don’t know if this film is going to work.
  • The Overlord trailer is finally out. I hope the new Hellboy film has this vibe of historical horror.
  • Millerverse adaptations are proceeding at Netflix, and they look pretty good on paper.
  • How has this not happened already? I would have thought feature film, but if sufficiently budgeted, a series is more nuanced…
  • Robot poster! Alert!
  • PLEASE let the Chameleon be in the new Spidey film. And Kraven. DO IT! I’m having Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends fever dream flashbacks.

That’s all for now. Back to power-loading on fight milk.

Get this Man a Facet Tool – Robots Root 11 May 2018

Disappointed at the lack of attribution, but this is my current desktop, and I used it in our latest Robot-Kraken Podcast. So good.

  • Looking forward to American Animals, as one does.
  • I’m 100% on board with whatever regarding Birds of Prey, honestly.
  • Thinking about the future of the franchise, what ‘big event’ could replace Avengers movies? I think this is a maguffin, because the narrative had bled into other films already, such as the last two most amazing Captain America films. I was thinking about this last night. Maybe ‘Secret Wars’? Not the stitched-together battle planet, but rather the idea that the heroes and villains would be shunted into an environment forcing them to organize and fight their way out. I can see this fusing concepts from the original Secret Wars, Champions, and frankly, a good dose of what we got from Thunderbolts and Exiles: versions of characters pulled from the multiverse. Makes sense to this guy!
  • This is HIGH TREASON.
  • Donald Glover got wonderfully weird on SNL. But this novelization of the backstory of Lando is even weirder.
  • Captain Marvel already has a very intriguing cast… but they just added Annette Bening, and I’m even more intrigued.
  • Look: I’m horrified by the project, but I LOOOOVE her honesty. Legit.
  • Ron Howard + Arrested Development + Star Wars. Gold! Marketing at its best.
  • Listen, I have too much stuff, and I’m trying to get less stuff. But I’m really having trouble resisting this.
  • TAKE MY MONEY (that I don’t have)
  • I haven’t finished Clone Wars and haven’t started Rebels (kids too young) but this is very interesting to me, stylistically.
  • Everything about this. EVERYTHING. Thanks to C Ferrren for finding it…
  • Jon Favreau’s new SW series will take place during the first years of peace in the New Republic. Interesting territory for the show, I think.
  • While I understand WHY Syfy is dropping the Expanse (bad deal they made) I will just say that this better get picked up by Netflix, fast.
  • Here’s that teaser for Predator that came out yesterday. Optimism abounds, more on Kris’ side than mine. But still, love the cast. Here’s a snap of the current Predator design, in all of it’s sizzlechest, tall headed glory.
  • All the behind the scenes business is done, and Rick and Morty will be back for… 70 EPISODES… FFS that’s good news.
  • 355 is an all-female spy thriller, which is 100% better news than whatever was happening the day before it was revealed to be happening. The cast.
  • LEGO car building factory awesomeness…

And with that, a reminder to listen to our latest episode of Robot-Kraken, and in general, you know, fear not and be just…

Seppuku by Saarlac – Robots Root 17 April 2018

I’m ALL about this samurai/Mandalorian situation back there. Just give me THAT movie, thanks.

Meanwhile, for science:

  • I’ll be in my bunker.
  • With Gabriel Luna’s casting as the new Terminator, and the most recent casting of other actors of Hispanic culture, I’m suddenly much more intrigued about what they’re up to… this could be interesting, or a garbage fire, or an interesting garbage fire.
  • I love Michael Mann, and how he can turn any subject matter into Heat, which suits me fine. This time, he’s going after Paul le Croix. I smell some Black Hat vibes.
  • I don’t get the sense this is a very serious effort, but a heist film set in the world of comic conventions, released the same day as Avengers? That’s pretty brilliant strategy.
  • Hotel Artemis, because Jeff Goldblum, that’s why.
  • Neuromancer and chemistry, as explained by one who knows, about one who used.
  • Ten years from now, we’ll have chemical attack weapons that obliterate the plastics in enemy armor, weapons and gear. Marked.
  • Cathy Yan has been tapped to direct Birds of Prey… which apparently is not the same movie as Gotham City Sirens. More females behind the pen and the camera, thats a good thing!
  • Things aren’t looking good for the (near) future of the Mad Max franchise… the lawsuit continues.
  • Domhnall Gleeson may take the lead roll in the adaptation of Kitchen, which stokes me. Also, I saw the 4th Harry Potter film for the first time, and kept yelling at my family that Mad Eye Moody was General Hux’s daddy. No one seemed interested.

Another Bat Time and Another Bat Station – 14 Nov 2016

This of course isn’t the first large scale photorealistic genre sculpture we’ve seen, but man, how many of these will be perched suspiciously in very wealthy nerd hideouts… for untoward attention purposes… admittedly it’s odd that it is less of a likeness of her than many products under the half-a-Yugo-in-1991 price point…

Christina Hobson has been tapped to write the Harley film. But it’s now officially a ‘women of the DC Universe’ film. I wonder if that will survive the development process. In truth, I do think Harley works better in a group dynamic. But I was hoping for a Harley and Joker on the lam story, tying in other villains and heroes but from their narrative perspective.

This is the stuff of many a sc-fi movie premise. Particularly Star Treks.

Preacher makes me Sweat – 23 May 2016

Image

I’m stoked: I looked at it thrice before realizing the hero image isa NEW Steve Dillon piece representing the cast as opposed to the original comic looks and characters. RAD.

In other news…

The new Star Trek trailer gives me some optimisms. It gives Lung whatever’s the opposite of optimisms. I don’t like seeing all the things in a trailer, rather than in the film, though.

JoBlo reports rumors that, among the other things we’ve heard recently about the Spidey film, that the Tinkerer will be the one to build Vulture’s crap out of recovered Chitauri gear, and that Stark will be giving Spidey more upgrades including nonsensical web armpit wings a la classic Ditko. That makes no sense. But I like them, so.

Here, Mashable attempts to explain the ‘timey-wimey’ timeline screwyness leading into X-Men Apocatole. I have to say, this was a helpful video for me. Still confusing. But good effort.

Finally, this report suggests that the Harley spin-off may actually be something more of a Birds of Prey or female-themed group dynamic film. Huh.
