Cheesesteak Cheese Sauce Gumming up My Bricks – Root 5 June 2018

  • BRICSBURGH. That’s inspired.
  • I was expecting to dislike the VANS X MARVEL collaboration, because I was a Vision kid, basically, so how could we not have the synchronicity of Vision Visions?! But anyway, the Black Panther ones are cool, and I’ve seen the Captain Marvel hi tops (apparently for women but you could size them up if you are not one) and those are probably my favorites, with the star symbol wrapping around the heel.
  • It’s astonishing how good a Transformers movie looks when stripped down and non-Bay’d. Lots of wonder here. Also, Starscream (or whichever) steals it for me.
  • This new Jurassic World poster is some of the worst Photoshop Disaster material in recent memory. That Stegasaurus with flailing legs and an expression like it sat on a spear is killing me. Also that mutated goat dino or whatever at 2:00. I mean, wait, maybe this is the best poster ever.
  • This is designed for the smaller GoPro Sessions model, but at $1.09 for the car chassis itself, it’s a no-brainer. I’M ON IT. And by on it, I mean I’m taking an existing car from the bin, pulling the body, and mounting my own Go Pro 4 onto it, as this one is designed for the Session (discontinued) and looks, and I care about neither. Still on it.
  • I’m stoked about the Wreck-it Ralph sequel, especially the Disney Princess situation. I can’t help but wish that disastrous Emoji movie hadn’t come along and burned through these concepts like a really rough trade shitty pr0n to this film’s high budget ladyerotica. If that makes sense.
  • I’m very interested in Widows, from the cast to the director. And of course, the subject matter… in three years we’re going to see Disney/Marvel production artists trying desperately to come up with a sufficiently interesting logotype for the Widow movie of course…
  • This is old, but I still go back to it. We’re a BB-9E household (BB-H8) so the kids love this video. I personally adore pissy robots.
  • This is a GREAT concept for a Boba Fett film. Legacy, not the man. Especially given how lackluster the man actually was. Focusing on the armor passing from guy to guy with different roles is a neat nod to the fact that all any of us of the ESB generation really care about is how the figure looked, anyway.
  • Great treatise on what makes a good action movie. It’s heavy on the DCU criticism, but the points are sound.

Apropos of nothing, I spotted this really bad CGI WW face in that video. Makes the mustache-removal look great!

Miscellaneous Bits and Pieces:

  • Before Expanse was saved by Amazon, someone sent up a model of the Roci into the upper atmosphere. I MEAN.

  • This remains my favorite Mondo poster EBAHHHHH. The skull, guise.

  • On the Robot-Kraken Podcast I referenced the quote that Wakanda looked like Jet Magazine from the 90s (Honest Trailers) … evidence!

  • When writing the TRDL character origins, i do a lot of research. I stumbled across this very interesting Aztec deity. My new neck tattoo!

No Good to Me Dead – Robots Root 25 May 2018

Mangold… on board Boba Fett?!? I mean, look: I’m part of the generation of fans that irrationally LOVES Boba Fett, but not part of the generation of fans that loves all those clone business. But if they took the right approach, this could be a pretty innovative piece of the extended SW saga. I want a heist and hunt film, come on!

Meanwhile, these items:

  • Regina King leads a new cast for the Watchmen series on HBO, and while the interwebs seem upset that they aren’t just retelling the same story as the film (and book) I’m looking forward to a story set post-Manhattan in the same continuity. Optimism alert!
  • One of my favorite touches in Deadpool 2 was the inclusion of queer characters where it wasn’t a thing. It wasn’t NOT a thing, either. It was about as controversial as Negasonic moving from one hawt haircut to another, as it should be. More on that when we release the Robot-Kraken Podcast, but look, none of it matters, as far as the haters go, and it REALLY matters, as representation for others, so I’m down.
  • ZOMBIE ALERT!
  • Matt Groening’s Disenchantment. What do you think?
  • Predator = Iron Man 3 + Dark Knight
  • The music is a departure, but everything else is spot on. Preacher S03!
  • Nothing is confirmed until its confirmed, but supposedly non-Batman may be joining previous-Batman in Spidey 2
  • Thanks Comcast. Thanks again. And for SPORTS.
  • One half of this John Wick 3 news is acceptable.
  • OK no joke: the finale of Six Feet Under’s final moments still haunts me. It just wrecked me. Somehow the Simpsons parody STILL has an effect.

Reminder, the latest episode of Robot-Kraken is available now: Legion, Expanse, and more! Please do rate and review us on iTunes…

How are Your Holes? – Robots Root 24 Oct 2017

Why does BRIGHT look like it’s working? It shouldn’t work. No one asked for a Shadowrun buddy cop drama. No one asked for Shadowrun, period. And yet.

meanwhile, GET THAT ROOT:

  • Surprising precisely no one, Captain Marvel will be in Avengers 4. I’m really intrigued about all this. Time travel? Skrullery? Also coming back: Ty Kimpson or similar, the kid from IM3… I’m again smelling time-travel rewriting of history. And good lors, Ben Mendelsohn being courted for the leader of the Skrulls ARE YOU KIDDING ME TAKE MY MONEY.
  • Termocop? Robominator? WHAT?!?
  • Well, writing an X-23 script despite not having a production order beats a world where that doesn’t happen.
  • Best enamel pin ever for today. Relevant for artists everywhere.
  • If the Robot Wars thing was staged… why was it so lame?
  • The legend of Bidlo Kwerve, most important person in the Star Wars universe…
  • Predator is still happening. With lighting! And Olivia Munn. What more do you need.
  • Yes please giant AT-AT no trick or treaters needed.
  • Geez. I haven’t seen War of the Planet of the Tole yet, but want to. Probably on the plane next week to Singapore. Anyway, apparently poor Malcolm from the previous film (Jason ‘John Connor’ Clarke) met an unseemly end off camera.
  • Braun vs. Olivetti?: Then and now… why choose? Love them both.
  • Yep, that’s certainly a Ronin look for Hawkeye, or alt -universe Hawkeye, or timey-wimey changed Hawkeye…
  • I’m a weirdo Monopoly guy. I’m not great at the game or anything like those super-committed players, I just like the boards and the mechanics of it, easy to start and stop thegame with the kids, and I love to collect the genre franchise editions. I’m not allowed to buy any more. Lucky for me this handmade Harry Potter set was a one-off and not for sale. ha!
  • HMMM. Boba Fett DID escape the Sarlaac! Lego proves it. I mean, that’s iron-clad amirite…

That’s all for today. WUBBA WUBBA DUB DUBBB!

More Than Meets the Industrial Designer – Robots Root 9 October 2017

Emerson Tung is an illustrator I’ve been following for years, and I’ve posted his work here before. I was struck by how he casually solves the modern Transformers movie problem: let the tech in the transforming bits be complicated if you need to to make it parse, but leave the body panels and such along, and anachronistic enough that you look at it and think ‘car robot’…

Meanwhile, that Robot’s Root:

  • I’m super down with the new Mondo art book… I love their poster work and this looks to be a nice collection.
  • The New Justice league trailer as a bit of plot in it, which is nice. I’m not sure I’d want to be the one to cover Bowie, but they tried. My buddy Ryan pointed out last night how confusing it is that Aquaman has a good ole boy slash surfer situation going on. I like it. But when he makes me THINK about it, it’s an interesting choice. I think they just let Momoa be Momoa just Momaing about. Here’s an international version with more ‘yee-a-UH!’ in it. Actually, no, less of it. But I like the theme music in the second trailer, and I wonder (optimistically) if it’s real.
  • I’m not convinced on the Mosaic project on HBO. A Choose-Your-Own-Adventure film by Soderbergh… eh. Feels like a video game.
  • You may recall that awesome short, Adam, done on the Unity engine backbone, by Neil Blomkamp? Here’s a sequel.
  • New X-Files S11 trailer has me shrugging. I realize, the last season was so random and disjointed (released in wrong broadcast order etc) and I had sort of forgotten about the hot mess they left it in. Anyway, all the ballyhoo from S10 was basically that their return to creature of the week format was the high point, and the serialized conspiracy eps the lowest. Now, I happen to love the conspiracy stuff… but I can’t imagine they targeted me specifically for S11… so huh.
  • The early reviews of Thor look very promising. Of course, that’s just about whether it will be good, not whether it will do well at the box office. I mean, Thor will. Blade Runner scores extremely high on Rotten Tomatoes and will be tanking (understandably) but I think Thor will have legs. They are very different animals. Speaking of, this is gorgeous.
  • I’m not sure that these photos are indicative of anything (other than that the poster doesn’t know the difference between an arm sleeve and a tattoo sleeve) but I do like the idea that for one reason or another Hawkeye will become Ronin. If that happens.
  • Ridley Scott says the next Alien film will be more about AI action than xenomorphs. I welcome it entirely. “I think the evolution of the Alien himself is nearly over, but what I was trying to do was transcend and move to another story, which would be taken over by A.I.’s. The world that the AI might create as a leader if he finds himself on a new planet. We have actually quite a big layout for the next one.”
  • Gore Verbinski MAY be on board for directing Gambit. That could be good or bad, depending on what you think of the director, and what he thinks of the material, because he’s pretty uneven in my opinion. I was so MEH on this project until I saw the synopsis. Now I want it to succeed.
  • Super bad luck on the Punisher release timing. I mean, the BAD LUCK is the horrible tragedy in Vegas, but I mean, tough time to release this project. Last time I posted about it they were delaying the screeners, but now the whole project may be pushed back. And probably should.
  • I’m a nerd, so I loved this: Hot Toys released a version of Boba Fett from the X-Mas Special. Believe it or not (believe it) I have this on my to-draw queue. HAHAHA. Now the ref material got 1,000x better.
  • If you liked Crank, you may be the target market for Happy on the Sy-Fy channel… I’m not sure where I stand on it. I like that it exists…
  • I wasn’t initially particularly interested in the Phillip K Dick anthology being cooked up. I don’t much like anthologies (though I make them out of necessity)… but having seen the promo, I’m intrigued…
  • Lastly, the Runaways full trailer still smacks of teen soap and doesn’t have the vibe I’m hoping for. EXCEPT. All the word of mouth is positive. So, maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised…

That’s all for today. Just sitting here pounding refresh on my alamo drafthouse page waiting for those Star Wars tickets…

multiPost 001 – 3 Jan 2017

Image

Welcome to multiPost. Your gods are dead.

First up: fear not, semi-true-believers, the Robot-Kraken podcast lives, and the new episode for January 2017 will be released shortly. We’ve made some minor tweaks: we are moving to a long-episode format and an annual release schedule. Wait, monthly. Anyway, everything else is pretty much the same. The longer overall episodes mean less structure and more fiddle faddle, which is a fine thing, friends. On to that which has happened:

1. An oldie but still number-one-goodie: chinese bootleg dvd mistranslations of Revenge of the Sith. So awesome. Considerably more awesome than the original film. link!

2. It’s not the long gestating movie franchise, but Robotech is resurfacing (again) in comic form (again) with accomplished scribe Brian Wood at the helm. Lets be positive. link!

3. Here’s a cool exercise, though not as rad as the Samurai-Star Wars stuff, though also at true scale… my favorite details are in the back. That’swhatshe- link!

4. With this AT-AT, the eyes have it: link!

5. Interesting supposition that there will be a mommy daddy feud over JL ownership… interesting dynamic. link!

6. Not sure I parse why the xonomorph’s skull has internal vertebrae and no brain case, but anyway, I know at least ONE GUY with a new house needing decorating… link!

7. Finally, the truth is out there: the reality behind that Elf spaghetti. Shudder! link!

Happy #2017 which so far is winning over #2016.

The Terrigen Mists of Broadcasting – 17 November 2016

Image
What an interesting development…
Marvel announced a new Inhumans TV series… financed by IMAX and debuting in theaters, fully shot on IMAX cameras (at least the first two eps sandwiched into a film) and then onto ABC as an ongoing… yet this is apparently NOT in continuity with the Marvel Agents of SHIELD series, featuring Inhumans for the last two seasons as its main plotline… even though it is not only the same owner, and the same characters, but even the same network. I have to wonder if this is just because the deal was abusiness arrangement with IMAX and the thing hasn’t been written or sorted out in any way yet. What could go wrong…

Also, these happened:

Image
ITEM: In talking about preparing for GitS, Scarjo included ‘room clearing’ in her list of training regimens… which pleases me greatly. GREATLY.
Room Cleaning. Not with vacuums.

:::

Image
ITEM: The Skull Island trailer was released in full. Lung emailed me about it, disappointed in the direction it has apparently gone. I’m not sure. I have so low expectations. I will say this: On seeing the teasers for it, I thought they were well-crafted (if lifting heavily from other films) but I wasn’t interested in a giant ape movie, and it seemed like something mayyyybe I’d watch on Netflix. With the addition of John C Reilly and the introduction of a giant-creature ecosystem, I’m slightly more interested. Still will need pharma.

:::

Image
ITEM: I never read A Series of Unfortunate Events, but I love everything I see here. Everything.

ITEM: HAGAGAGAGAGAGAGAGAG Peter Jackson’s movie prop collection I want to go here to die.

ITEM: In IG user I follow likes to post concept art that’s been released. Usually it’s stuff we’ve seen before so I blow through it (I follow actual concept artists who post their process work which is much more interesting) however, of all of the iterations from the MCU films, this version of Arnim Zola (not used, Ant Man) was the BEEEEESSSSSST. DamnI love it.

Photo of Don Joe Masseria’s corpse in 1931, Brooklyn restaurant floor… probably the origin of the Ace of Spades trope.

I love, love, LOVE white Boba Fett. I’ve drawn him once, and will again. I have the figure, or my kids do now. Neither on fire. Yet!

Samurai coffee [uncredited] currently my iphone lock screen. Because of course it is.

And totally unrelated, yet related, how about a Japanese commercial featuring a red samurai kicking ass at the leisure sports? HERE.

That is all. This moment has been duly noted and will be deducted from your pay.

Tom Hiddleston has been being cagey about those Bond rumors. You know the ones: about him being the front runner in negotiation to take on the character in the next slate of films. The ones where he’s competing against Idris Elba. The ones where other people are pushing for a female Bond, such as Emily Blunt or Gillian Anderson. The ones where his Night Watchman director is also hot and heavy for the director’s chair. But NOT the ones where I was tricked into believing they awarded the role to the pretty guy from Divergent.

More theoretical detail on the theoretical reshoots of Rogue One:

Some crew initially heard J.J. Abrams was supervising the reshoots.
Gareth Edwards is doing the reshoots himself but with a partner, Christopher McQuarrie.
Christopher McQuarrie, the final writer on Rogue One, will be working extensively with Edwards on set to make sure they’re on the “same page” with the most recent draft of the film.
Christopher McQuarrie’s draft of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was considered superior to the film they shot previously.
It was not Edwards’ fault as McQuarrie’s draft wasn’t completed when much of the film was shot and revisions kept coming in that made the film feel uneven.
32 sets have been re-created for the reshoot.
The crew expects they are reshooting 40% of the film.
They are working six days a week for eight weeks.
None of which is confirmed, and all of which is reasonable considering the film isn’t out for 6 months AND these films often have tweaks like this, particularly when they didn’t have a finished shooting script in the first place.

I suspect, personally, that it’s not about McQuarrie having to save Edwards’ ass… and he posted as much on Twitter, somewhat offended by the suggestion. I bet it’s more about tying some of the uneven elements together with a more finished script, and frankly, unfortunately, I DO buy that Disney would want more of that Barton Fink feeling, I mean that Star Wars adventure mood, rather than an urgent, gritty war movie. Wish they would diversify and allow for more variety in the franchise however, if this were so.

Love or hate Agents of SHIELD, they haven’t been afraid to take risks. This whole season involved a former teammember, who was proven to be a traitor and murderer (in the best Winter Soldier related anything outside of the movie itself) eventually killed on the surface of an alien planet but returned to earth, a corpse hosting a hive intelligence Inhuman comprised of microbeings. His very cells were his collective intelligence. Anyway, in the last few episodes of the season, they spent the money on showing what Hive, as they called him, looked like in his natural, or first form, millennia ago. It was basically Kraken (?) from the Secret Warriors comics from some years back. They really did him justice with the FX. Not far off from the technology and methods used for Davey Jones… but on a TV budget. Most impressive.

I’ll save my comments on X-Men: Apocalypse for Robot-Kraken and a review, but ONE thing I like about it is that it gave some fine artists like Warren Lau an opportunity to draw Olivia Munn. Why they waited for this as an excuse, I don’t know.

Netflix has a new Voltron series coming out in June which is great for a number of reasons: the original series isn’t readily available, and the remake they came out with in the late aughts is painfully bad, so I have to listen to that dreck some evenings, shortening my lifespan. This one also is animated by the team that brought… well, many other popular modern anime to us… and one lion (the bigger guy goes with the bigger character OF COURSE) is voiced by TRDL fave Tyler Labine. So, awesome!

The latest rumors on Justice League et al:

Image
– Steppenwolf will be the big bad of Justice League, and this is the demon dude seein in that Communion deleted scene from B v S that I hoped was actually Darkseid because rad, doesn’t look like a stonefaced uncle from Jersey. But anyway, being a Marvel guy I didn’t know who Steppenwolf was, looked it up, and it’s either a Kirby character from the 70s who led the planetary military of Apokolips and survived a Doomsday encounter; OR, it’s the living embodiment of a 20’s German novel; OR, it’s the singular embodiment of an old progrock band that plagued me in my early childhood. You decide.
http://birthmoviesdeath.com/2016/05/11/ … ice-league

– Affleck is now rumored to be really upset and humiliated after going out on a limb in the press work up for BvS about his performance jokingly being ‘better than Daredevil’ and yet, BvS scores (unfairly) lower on Rotten Tomatoes, which everyone brings up to him now in his driveway; He’s also rumored to have received an Executive producer credit on Justice League, which can often mean HE SHOWED UP, but could also (hopefully) mean WB is leveraging him into a position to take the reins from Snyder at some point.

Here’s some great viral marketing…In other news:

1. Surprising precisely zero people, first out of the gate, not one day after the holiday weekend and Deadpool’s record-busting haul, Wolverine 3 is now carrying an R-Rating as a goal. Because of course it is. At least it wasn’t TMNT 2.

5. Mike Winkelmann’s recent interview led me to his own page, where I lost track of time, and space, and timespace… it’s a great note, where they ask about his floating imagery… something I love in his work as well. He also notes daily projects, which i also think is critical, though sometimes challenging to be consistent.
