Protect Ya Neck – Robots Root 18 July 2018

Man, I like Manta and Oceanmaster, although the latter feels naked without neck armor. I know the talk of today is the sea dragon upgrade and all… I also  like that Fisherman King design. I’m more interested in these other six undersea realms than I am in Aquaman and his false anti-buoyancy. United the seven, indeed.

Meanwhile, in space:

  • Look I don’t know much about Dr. Who, but apparently the new Doctor can generate pizza, so I’m in.
  • Always the eternal idealist, I like to believe, I CHOOSE to believe, the 48 stars were intentional. Like Robin’s armored tunic and little boy shorts. Snyder knew whats up!
  • The History Channel is releasing an Area 52 series called Project: Blue Book. Because history. Aiden Gillen is in it though, so i’m there.
  • I remain optimistic about Bumblebee, but uh, these are starting to look a bit familiar and complicated…
  • Gotta appreciate that first Meg poster. Almost makes up for the Photoshop disaster of the second one.
  • The Starcourt Mall! Best Stranger Things teaser ever. EVER.
  • I was only interested in this fan-made film news because of learning the excellent term… Ludonarrative dissonance: is the conflict between a video game’s narrative told through the story and the narrative told through the gameplay. Ludonarrative, a compound of ludology and narrative, refers to the intersection in a video game of ludic elements – or gameplay – and narrative elements. Thats useful in my daily life! Somehow.
  • Hmmm… Marvel better get that A-Force movie together soon. If DC botches an all-female supers film first, it could become harder to get it pushed through.
  • How surreal is it that The First will feature Sean Penn (it’s a Mars colonization story) but from the creator of House of Cards, featuring his acrimonious ex-wife situation?
  • I like this Lego DB5 build even more than the MINI and the VW Type II, both of which felt hampered by the system’s challenges with compound curves.
  • I can’t tell if Patient Zero is a good movie or a bad movie, but I like intelligent, creepy zombies, and I like the conceit that Matt Smith’s character can talk to zombies only because he was once bitten, but not turned. Seems like the sort of reveal that would have been better in the film itself, rather than the trailer… the thing about music bothering zombies is interesting, too.
  • If Batwoman goes forward, it will be groundbreaking. Assuming executives don’t meddle.
  • While I’m REALLY tired of humanoid aliens in Star Trek, Discovery seems to have landed a second interesting design that outshines it’s TV budget.
  • I love Pena, but I don’t know if this film is going to work.
  • The Overlord trailer is finally out. I hope the new Hellboy film has this vibe of historical horror.
  • Millerverse adaptations are proceeding at Netflix, and they look pretty good on paper.
  • How has this not happened already? I would have thought feature film, but if sufficiently budgeted, a series is more nuanced…
  • Robot poster! Alert!
  • PLEASE let the Chameleon be in the new Spidey film. And Kraven. DO IT! I’m having Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends fever dream flashbacks.

That’s all for now. Back to power-loading on fight milk.

Cheesesteak Cheese Sauce Gumming up My Bricks – Root 5 June 2018

  • BRICSBURGH. That’s inspired.
  • I was expecting to dislike the VANS X MARVEL collaboration, because I was a Vision kid, basically, so how could we not have the synchronicity of Vision Visions?! But anyway, the Black Panther ones are cool, and I’ve seen the Captain Marvel hi tops (apparently for women but you could size them up if you are not one) and those are probably my favorites, with the star symbol wrapping around the heel.
  • It’s astonishing how good a Transformers movie looks when stripped down and non-Bay’d. Lots of wonder here. Also, Starscream (or whichever) steals it for me.
  • This new Jurassic World poster is some of the worst Photoshop Disaster material in recent memory. That Stegasaurus with flailing legs and an expression like it sat on a spear is killing me. Also that mutated goat dino or whatever at 2:00. I mean, wait, maybe this is the best poster ever.
  • This is designed for the smaller GoPro Sessions model, but at $1.09 for the car chassis itself, it’s a no-brainer. I’M ON IT. And by on it, I mean I’m taking an existing car from the bin, pulling the body, and mounting my own Go Pro 4 onto it, as this one is designed for the Session (discontinued) and looks, and I care about neither. Still on it.
  • I’m stoked about the Wreck-it Ralph sequel, especially the Disney Princess situation. I can’t help but wish that disastrous Emoji movie hadn’t come along and burned through these concepts like a really rough trade shitty pr0n to this film’s high budget ladyerotica. If that makes sense.
  • I’m very interested in Widows, from the cast to the director. And of course, the subject matter… in three years we’re going to see Disney/Marvel production artists trying desperately to come up with a sufficiently interesting logotype for the Widow movie of course…
  • This is old, but I still go back to it. We’re a BB-9E household (BB-H8) so the kids love this video. I personally adore pissy robots.
  • This is a GREAT concept for a Boba Fett film. Legacy, not the man. Especially given how lackluster the man actually was. Focusing on the armor passing from guy to guy with different roles is a neat nod to the fact that all any of us of the ESB generation really care about is how the figure looked, anyway.
  • Great treatise on what makes a good action movie. It’s heavy on the DCU criticism, but the points are sound.

Apropos of nothing, I spotted this really bad CGI WW face in that video. Makes the mustache-removal look great!

Miscellaneous Bits and Pieces:

  • Before Expanse was saved by Amazon, someone sent up a model of the Roci into the upper atmosphere. I MEAN.

  • This remains my favorite Mondo poster EBAHHHHH. The skull, guise.

  • On the Robot-Kraken Podcast I referenced the quote that Wakanda looked like Jet Magazine from the 90s (Honest Trailers) … evidence!

  • When writing the TRDL character origins, i do a lot of research. I stumbled across this very interesting Aztec deity. My new neck tattoo!

THOM OUT!

Haileys and Bumblebees – Robots Root 3 Jan 2018

The only three things I can find to be positive about Bumblebee: The Damn Movie are, in no particular order:

  1. No Michael Bay
  2. Bumblebee is a Bug FFS
  3. Hailey Steinfeld

Maybe that WAS the right order.

Robot’s Root!

  • This comparison between Force Awakens and the Knights of the Old Republic storyline was pretty good. Had I any knowledge of the latter, maybe I would have detected some of this. Or not.
  • Every time Neil Blomkamp posts concept art from his axe-murdered Alien 5 treatment, I get frustrated.
  • I know this isn’t the most popular opinion, but I for one would want to see those extra hours of Blade Runner 2049… speaking of which, Ridley Scott’s elder man ego is spinning out… these comments are nuts.
  • This quote from Guillermo del Toro was amusing mostly because he criticized the design. I feel him.
  • Rian Johnson is supposedly set to begin filming scenes for the new trilogy in 2018… without a script, or even a stated concept… so at most, I hope it’s establishing shot set pieces… I mean, a road is nice. I like roads.
  • The most obvious conclusion reached from the linkbait comments that ‘Thor will undergo a dramatic transformation in Infinity Tole’ is a loss of an arm, as per the comics some years back… I’d like to see Thanos rip a Thor arm off…
  • new octopus alert. ALERT!
  • Hailey Steinfeld wants to be Joss Whedon’s Batgirl, if these misleading interview comments are to be believed. I would not mind. She’s fit, athletic, has a great expressive face, and has been acting since she was a wee one (remember True Grit? Long before the pop singer phase)… I had a different fantasy casting for this role, but maybe we’ll get to that sometime in 2018 on the podcast if a couple of other rubes get their shit together…
  • On the heels of the failed Dark Universe, Paramount is hurtling forward with the Hasbroverse, announcing dates for GI Joe, Micronauts and others… despite not having scripts or a plan. Sounds about right. Dungeons and Dragons AGAIN. Guh.
  • Here’s an interview with Neal Scanlan about creature work on TLJ… if you are into that sort of thing, which I am…
  • I still can’t even with this fever dream. It might be great. Mortal Engines…
  • I have an intense need to clean up and sort this mess… while eating THIS, of course.
  • Lung and I traded finds in this vein… this was my favorite of the Star Wars ones. Still looking for the perfect Deckard one.
  • Mark L Smith has been tasked as writer for Tarantino’s Star Trek film… I mean… someone rubbed a lamp somewhere right?
  • I enjoy radical fan theories where the main character is dead. Works with almost any movie.
  • Would Darkseid have helped or hurt Justice League? I think, as Kevin Smith described it, it would have made an effective tether for the next film.
  • Great honest trailer about Return of the Toleyou… except for the grating mispronunciation of Maori…
  • The new Annihilation trailer is already showing too much. I’m on blackout. But I can’t wait.
  • They do look pretty New Mutanty… love the Lockheed puppet…
  • Cloverfield 3 comes out in April… but with no name yet and no promos. Which is fine. They played it fast and loose with the last “sequel”… I’m still on board, ESPECIALLY if it is indeed space based as rumored. The cast alone!
  • True Detective S03 is shaping up to be pretty exciting to this guy: three time periods, the Ozarks, now Dorff joins Ali? Damn

That’s all for today. Back to cooking them Porgs…

Manilla Folder Time – Robots Root 17 June 28

Preacher S02 started this past weekend, but I won’t see it until a few nights from now, after settling down from the last two week’s of cons. But man, I’m stoked. STOKED.

I’m back from Portland and the Heroes and Villains Fanfest/Walker Stalker Con, but it will take a few days to decompress all that and talk about it. In the meantime, I present:

Robot’s Root!

•  In my mind, the biggest news of the weekend was about the Han Solo firing. First, it was that Kennedy didn’t like Lord and Miller’s choices. Then it was about improvisation. Then we learned, after a brief speculative period, that Ron Howard had stepped forward to complete the film. This late in the production, it raises questions. I thought this article offered some insight. I choose to be optimistic. I know the talk of ‘acting coaches’ is alarming, but this is often employed, not simply to bolster a performance, but to tweak it to a specific vision; when you are essentially doing an impression of a well known actor in a famous role, this could be expected, I’d wager.

• This may not be thrilling news for some, or most, but both Brad Pitt and David Fincher are confirmed for WWZ 2. Now, the original strayed far from the book, and I’d be interested to see what direction they take for the sequel, which I really liked, particularly seeing it at midnight in a coffin hotel in Singapore, which makes everything weirder. Meanwhile, Pitt has signed on opposite Rickie Lee Jones in an interesting project about a near-spectrum engineer heading into space to find his astronaut father, which I am 10% into.

• Here’s the best [Hot Toys] look at the Iron Man armor featured in Spidey. I’m of two minds. Make it three minds, for brand awareness. For one, I’m struggling as much with the silver +red/yellow motif nose as I was in Ultimate Iron Man, from a design logic standpoint. I can understand if the gravity of things have led Stark to focus on the tech and less on the ‘hot rod’-ain’t job. But why any red/yellow at all? Two, I want a rational explanation in the script for why he’s wearing this after supposedly dumping the gear after IM 3. Third, science! No, but here’s my thing: I was thinking about an armor post-Civil War. I imagined something black and tactical. I imagined Stark going purpose-built, not the way all of his gallery of disposable armors was in IM3, but a no-nonsense, complete weapon armor. Anyway, there’s that. Meanwhile, here’s Stark on the set of Infinity War wearing curious, deliberate cammo gear with orange striping and what looks like another chest reactor.

• I’m choosing, I mean REALLY choosing, to be optimistic about ST: Discovery. So. Here’s a photo of the proto-transporter and a diagram explaining the uniform delineation, the latter of which being a critical resource for arts. I can’t yet get over the choice to make this the Shatnerverse and not the Pineverse, and how this supposedly takes place AFTER Pike and a few years before Enterprise, but hey. You know I have that strange ability to ignore visual continuity. But I WANT it to be different, anyway.

• Great story of JCVD getting fired from Predator for all the awesomest reasons. Amazing.

• The word of Dazzler’s inclusion in the next X-Men brouhaha appears to have been confirmed, along with quite a bit of vitriol aimed at suggestions that Taylor Swift be cast. I was really on the fence about the 80s X-Men stuff and the setting in the 90’s for the next film. However, I saw some pretty amazing period cosplay this weekend at Fanfest that warmed me to the idea. Well, Izzy was Jubilee, but same point of reference.

• I remain skeptical of the non-dubious application of such a product: Dubious Product.

• I like the casting… well, 99% of that like is on a certain mad brother, but why, WHY, did they release that first image with Medusa’s plastic weird hair to sour everyone on this? Posters, thus.

• I haven’t been able to watch a Bayformers film past the first one, but the 3% hope I have for this Bumblebeee spinoff is the hint that he might have the Bug chassis. Maybe? I mean, guys, U GUISE, all you have to do is exactly what the cartoons did in adapting the toy design language, but dump the mysterious planor sections of gray ‘robot’in the transformed limbs, and just… do… THAT. Anyway, who knows.

Robotech is the first physical comic I’ve committed to in about 10 years. I love what Marco Turini dove into here, after following him on IG for a few years. Really looking forward to the series, and hope it works.
