Fett’s Vette – 7 October 2018

Quick snap! No sooner than I posted the news from yesterday regarding the Mandalorian, they released the first photo and the director list. Both are pretty awesome. I do wonder at YET ONE MORE BROWN BLECHHH but the armor looks cool and the smooth helmet is a nice touch. I’m into it. It seems like they are going for an anthology vibe in tone, given that we have a wide range of styles present in these directors… Taika Waititi?!? So, optimistically this could be nuanced and pessimistically, worst-case, it will be like X-Files, like Kris said last night, where only the eccentric episodes are worth revisiting.

Thus, in space, this may be happening:

  • Lobo has finally been presented in live action… that Deadpool of the 80s… and he has… a top-knot… this looks very Monster Magnet, doesn’t it?
  • We talked about this on last night’s pod, but Chris Evans is sure heavily sayonara-ing it with his tweet. But I contend thats the sort of thing Marvel would have him do, regardless of what is happening in Avengers 4. Believe nothing. And everything!
  • Here’s 5 minutes of Aquaman for you. I’m trying to not watch any more trailers or content, but it’s probably hopeless…
  • Wait… this guy was working on this Lego model for almost as long as the actual construction. He must have started the minute the images for the planning department presentation were leaked.
  • I don’t make it out to the comic shops these days, but this new anthology of Ghost in the Shell material by guest creators is pretty amazing. I like what I see!
  • I REALLY need to see Ant-Man and Wasp again.

And with that, I leave you with a carefully curated collection of nightmare toilets.

He Even Paid for That Suit – Robots Root 30 July 2018

As rumors of the Batman solo film increasingly draw comparisons to Batman: Year One, I grow more and more cautiously optimistic. I want facking dark gray under-armor, combat boots, hand stitched cowl and cape, an army/navy surplus belt, flash bangs and sharpened steel knives. And I want failure. [Art by the One Dave Johnson ]

Meanwhile…

  • Honest Trailer for Ready Player One is honest.
  • Captain America’s proposed cameo in Ant-Man and Wasp would have actually been pretty good. Though I agree with the choice to exclude it. Not necessary.
  • The logic here is pretty screwy. Them lost all sense.
  • Reading the creators wax optimistic about future Venom films, I’m reminded of a logical but problematic detail: in reports from SDCC it was noted that Venom doesn’t have the chest symbol. Makes sense, in an origin without a Spider-Man connection. Yet, without that white spider across the chest, this will just be a big rubbery black blob with teeth and googly eyes.
  • The latest on again, off again rumors are that New Mutants shit the bed and X-Men is a hot mess, and that both may be scrapped by Disney. Its both premature and hazy, and I don’t yet take them seriously.
  • Henry Cavill says he’d be down to play Bond, because of course he’s a tall white European and he wears a suit well. I’m OK with it.
  • Against all odds, Deadwood as a film has finally been greenlit, and actor schedules have been sorted out.
  • Stoned Alone. This is like that grocery store animated film from a few years ago. The concept is more stoney than the end result could even be, and I love them both for being things.

  • Iron Fist’s twitter has been posting episode names as battered storefront signage. .I’m really in love with this marketing concept.
  • In an interesting development, AMC and their legal representation have vetted Chris Hardwick and are bringing him back. They don’t outright state the claims against him by his ex are unfounded, but they are taking the risk of reinstating him. This not being the certain political world where gross people are doing gross things with impunity, but rather the world of sensitive entertainment business where creators have been sacked in recent days for old tweets.
  • I’m delighted that Denis Villeneuve is planning to shoot Dune as only the first half of the first book, rather than cramming everything in. More room to breathe and build the world with some elegance.
  • The moment the actress was cast, I knew there’d be a racist dust-up over Starfire. After the trailer, it was certain. Some pitiful trolls are on the attack, surprising precisely no one.

  • August 24th, AMC… let’s not let this one slip past us, pals.

Finally, I know it’s an important film in culture, etc etc but I’m just so in love with this shot of Tessa Thompson.

Mount The Curb – Robots Root 9 May 2018

This is what the internet is for. STOP LYING, BATMAN.

Meanwhile.

  • I cant make heads or tails of what’s going on with TJ Miller’s implosion, but he won’t be in Deadpool 3, apparently. I do miss his energy in Silicon Valley, though. Not talking about behind the scenes value, just the finished products…
  • I’d be down with an all female Knights of Ren. This is like the rumored post-Avengers all-female supers team-up. You don’t even have to market it that overtly. Just DO it. Such as with Annihilation.
  • Let me just day, for the 333th time: I want a Bucky Barnes Cap. I mean, i NEEDS it. It was great in the comics.
  • So here’s the magical photo full of unicorn sparkles that apparently convinced Snyder to cast Cavill as Superman. And it’s… yeah… well, maybe I’m biased by how bulked he was later, but this isn’t thrilling.
  • I didn’t watch this AD S05 trailer, as I’m just going to dive right in and watch the show directly… but here you go.
  • The amount of misdirection in the Avengers: Infinity War trailers was peak. It does beg the question of how are they going to market the 4th Avengers movie… I’m of the mind they have all the actors do promo and press anyway, because come on… just don’t tell us HOW they come back. It’s like that hot mess of Superman/no Superman in the JL ads.
  • Super into what I’m seeing of Luke Cage S02. TOO much charisma. “They have to know we tried.”
  • As if the Infinity War situation couldn’t get more brutal.
  • Black Widow has gone through some hyperbolic number of director interviews, according to the supernet, so it must be true. More important subtext is the concept that they are looking for the right voice, not JUST an indie, or female, or controversial, voice. Hopefully, though, all those things in the end.
  • Sherlock Holmes 3 is coming, and I’m delighted.
  • It will be interesting to see how the original Wasp suit looks in motion. That helmet and the coat design were always something that barely made sense even in the comics.
  • Good to hear that Artemis actually has some old-school bite to it. The trailers were cut so as to look like every other post-John Wick project. Neat to hear it’s more 80s action movie…
  • Beautiful Last Starfighter art…
  • GUISE: MUTATIONS! ALIENS! DEATH FROM DUST! I mean, not like we ever went to the moon, but still.

OK, go to itunes now and check out or latest podcast which was released yesterday: Black Panther, Jumanji, insouciance…

It Doesnt Look Like Anything To Me – Robots Root 28 February 2018

So, Joss Whedon is out on the Batgirl project… and like Justice League, the reasons stated vs. the reasons behind the reasons, are cause for some speculation. What I find MORE intriguing, however, is the flood of capable, interesting female writers and directors doing open offers to make this project what it actually wants to be… and how DC/WB is  tone-deaf about it. The image above is mine, by the way. Thank you, thank you. Whedon’s original non-script was apparently to be based on a story from the late 60s, the quintessential pre-spine-shattering Batgirl… I would be interested in something a little more like the current comics, frankly.

[Image available as a sweet print by yours truly here.]

Meanwhile, in space:

  • I’m super into Anon, a new film from the director of Gattaca. I love the post-Soviet style and overlays of data. Amanda Seyfried is also killer (so to speak) as a brunette. This could be terrible. But I choose to believe.

  • Polar, an adaptation from a comic from Dark Horse, has been greenlit for Netflix. Spoiler alert: it appears to be the same plot as John Wick 3 will likely be, just with Mads Mikkelsen.
  • Francis Lawrence continues to talk up development on a BSG feature film nodding to both TV series (or both major ones) but going in a more ‘current’ direction… which I take to mean instead of apeing New Hope, it’ll ape whatever’s popular next year. HAR!
  • I appreciated how low-rez R2-D2’s Leia hologram was in Last Jedi, and it did appear to be the original one from New Hope, but I had no idea it was actually rendered more degraded for a 30 years later vibe. I thought it was just the old tech-in-star wars effect from the original film plus the meta old-tech-in modern-film disconnect… kind of meta meta.
  • I see a lot of great cosplays at the shows I do, but man, throw a pro photographer or two at them, and it’s even more impressive
  • Latest in video game interest from the guy who buys them but has no time to play them… Burnout Remastered is coming. LOOOOVE them Burnout games.
  • Which is better: bouquets of donuts, or Pennywise style donut delivery? Why choose!
  • PORG CAKE!
  • Some interesting interview material about Duncan Jones’ Mute, and how it morphed into a sci-fi film from its original noir underpinnings. I wish it was getting better reviews, but I’m still hot to see it.
  • I admit, I’m surprised: test screenings for Aquaman have rated very well, apparently featuring accomplished action sequences. Of course, almost all of these bug supers films have tested well early on because of the demographic for the pre-screening crowd. Justice League and BVS both tested extremely well, as did Age of Ultron.
  • Expanse S03 trailer is finally up, showing little, but readers have a good sense of the story. It’s a doozy.
  • Never enough Yondu
  • this was disturbing. Not surprising, but great to hear he was able to get help in that critical window, which is not common.
  • Did I talk about Outsider already? If so, disregard or nod in affirmation. If not, it’s a Netflix project involving Jared Leto playing a pilot in the 50s trapped in Japan and entering a Yakuza phase. For fun and profit! Looks amazing, to me.
  • Gemma Chan has been cast in the Captain Marvel film as the Kree spy Minn-Erva (hopefully with a name change somewhere down the line because COME ON)
  • First look at Shazam/Captain Marvel’s costume here. Looks very golden age.
  • Not too often that reshoots involve inserting an entirely new character
  • A heavily unsubstantiated rumor is that Winder Woman 2’s villain will be the Cheetah, played by… Emma Stone. Take that as you will. Where are the photomanips?!
  • The trailer for Wreck-It Ralph 2 trailer finally launched. Looks great of course… I admit I wish they weren’t using real app companies… Emoji ruined that forever.
  • Terry Goodkind is a dick.

Bonus: this video game to brief comic adaptation of Peggy Carter as Captain America reminds me of something…

Not the same, but close! And a good seller for me at shows, too…available here, since apparently today I’m just hawkin’ wares…

A Viable Use for That Trident – Robots Root 22 Nov 2017

Some round-up root for you!

  • Brian Coldrick’s ‘Behind You’ series of one-page ghost stories is now available. Check them out. I’ve pre-ordered.
  • According to a few different primary sources, this amazing poster up top has been making the rounds at some Chinese theaters. I hope its true.
  • Cap needs to stop rolling up his sleeves. Those are just going to flop down in an aggravating fashion as soon as he starts doing anything.
  • An adult-oriented Harley Quinn animated series is in the works that just might be watchable. I mean, despite the fan art and such, not THAT kind of adult-oriented.
  • Next month, the event we’ve been awaiting for will finally be here: the story of moral struggle, identity crisis, family vs power, the oppression of an evil empire, fascinating weapons, white dresses… yes, Peaky Blinders is back!
  • I tend to believe what Christopher Eccleston says. He’s burned too many bridges by being blunt to be editing himself. If he says he did Thor 2 for the money, I do believe him. But when he says he was outraged to learn of hours of makeup prep for the role and that he was not informed, well… you’re embarrassing yourself, man.
  • Superfans are writing petitions and freaking out about what is or isn’t in Justice League. C’mon… I mean, it’s amusing reading, but still.
  • Daisy Ridley and Josh Gad are attached to the latter’s project called Super-Normal, described as a subversive take on the superhero genre. I’m into it.
  • Ellen Page is attached to a Netflix adaptation of Umbrella Academy, which I like very much. Everything about this, actually.
  • This is my favorite of the Star Wars VIII posters so far. The red cape, the color tones, the composition, and the fact that for once only one character is looking at you, and it almost doesn’t even look like a photoshop horror. I mean, almost.
  • This recent surprise thing that was cooked up for Jimmy Kimmel delighted me. Watch the video… PS these look a LOT like my early work.

  • Last time I posted about how good the Sideshow figure of Hela looked, and how saucy she sauntered around in general in the film. I forgot to provide evidence. Thus:
  • And related, you can have your own sex god headdress... head optional…
  • James Franco as Madrox the Multiple Man? OK sure. I’ll bite. Seems like fan casting but at this point, everything does.
  • Look, Zachary Levi is charming, intelligent and passionate. And he seems fully prepared for the gym onslaught. I’m optimistic, even as I have no interest in the character.
  • I love everything about the Deadpool 2 teaser, from the surreal Bob Ross situation to Negasonic’s hawt hair. EVERYTHING.
  • WANT WANT WANT so many times WANT. I’m starting a fund.
  • Fascinating article on why Cuphead’s early animation style can’t be divorced from the cultural trappings of the era. Also, good lord do I want to play this game.
  • Here’s a neat look at all of Blade Runner 2049’s miniature diorama sets.
  • McSweeney’s takes on Indiana Jones

  • Finally, my desktop screen for the week: the glicee print ‘Wellington, 1870’ featuring the cast of What we Do in the Shadows. So damn good, every detail.

Legend Has it – Robots Root 15 June 2017

Black Panther rules everything around me.

In third place (because BP needed two), we have Robot’s Root for 9 June 2017:

  • Interesting that Blomkamp feels that Chappie is his most personal, best film, but that Elysium wasn’t that great. I felt the opposite.
  • I need more Stranger Things in my life. Immediately. Thessalhydra or not.
  • Ugh, American remake of Misfits. UGH.
  • An absolutely fascinating look at the true history behind Dr. Poison’s life mask in Wonder Woman.
  • Now YOU can own Bill Paxton’s armor from Aliens. I mean, how could you live without this.
  • All this recent talk from Chris Evans about signing on beyond his contract and how Infinity War would change the MCU etc etc: yes, we get it. Cap is getting assassinated.
  • I love how Ian McShane talks up Deadwood every 6 months and how it’s in HBO’s hands. I mean, YEAH, but still, I’d rather see actual progress on the project.
  • Useful.
  • Interesting that Olivia Munn isn’t yet signed up for the new X-Men film (she was woefully underutilized in the last one) but VERY interesting that supposedly Jessica Chastain is being courted for Lilandra of the Shi-ar. I LOVE THE CONCEPT.
  • Shioli Kutsuna has been cast in Deadpool 2. So many options here. Lady Deathstrike sounds like one, but given her Wolverine and X-Men pedigree, seems an odd choice.
  • Try to imagine John Lithgow as the Joker. I can. Wow.
  • Check out this rad Big Trouble in Little China project.

OK, go run your jewels, whils Kris and I prepare for Wizard World Sacramento!

ITEM: After the next Bond casting hunt has been rumor-fodder, even before Daniel Craig was shitting on the franchise in interviews for Spectre, it was kind of surprising when this story broke over the weekend. I mean, not surprising that the studio would continue to try and retain him with higher and higher paychecks (he already rejected a king’s sum) but just the SCALE of the thing. As reported, which is probably less than the real deal, $150M for two films. Let that number sink in. Michael Keaton and others have famously made huge sums off of big ticket franchise deals, after all the points and back-end profit deals are counted… but consider this report isn’t even including whatever THOSE arrangements are for him, if he takes it.

ITEM: So, last week, right before I left for the mountains, CW inexplicably released THIS now infamous photo of Tyler Hoechlin in costume as the new Superman as featured on the Supergirl show. The internet cried for 10 hours straight. Admittedly, the backlash memes have been excellent. My favorite reference was: someone move the Kryptonite away from him. He came off as incredibly seedy looking, with a build and posture that said whatever’s the opposite of Superman, and a creepy gaze. I felt like I was seeing some alternate universe thing where one of the Falcones was wearing the suit. Also, my design sensibilities are outraged: loose belt, weird long underwear texture in the bodysuit, and those strange smooth ‘cape ends’ as they attach to the chest (which in other photos are all he wears, the cape being digital) with those gold trim pieces… along with the always-unpleasant stretched-out supercollar.
Image

Reality is, TH can look ruggedly handsome and much more on-model, so I think this may be a fluke. But it takes me back to all the other marketing flubs I can’t grasp: how they could let it out the door. All the eyeballs on it. If its one of those ‘all the designers and marketing folks said it sucked but the executive insisted’ things, I hope it comes to light. The show has shown pretty consistently good costuming, as far as I can tell, and good casting choices… so who knows. But wow, way to FAIL THE WEEK AFTER SDCC.
