It Doesnt Look Like Anything To Me – Robots Root 28 February 2018

So, Joss Whedon is out on the Batgirl project… and like Justice League, the reasons stated vs. the reasons behind the reasons, are cause for some speculation. What I find MORE intriguing, however, is the flood of capable, interesting female writers and directors doing open offers to make this project what it actually wants to be… and how DC/WB is  tone-deaf about it. The image above is mine, by the way. Thank you, thank you. Whedon’s original non-script was apparently to be based on a story from the late 60s, the quintessential pre-spine-shattering Batgirl… I would be interested in something a little more like the current comics, frankly.

[Image available as a sweet print by yours truly here.]

Meanwhile, in space:

  • I’m super into Anon, a new film from the director of Gattaca. I love the post-Soviet style and overlays of data. Amanda Seyfried is also killer (so to speak) as a brunette. This could be terrible. But I choose to believe.

  • Polar, an adaptation from a comic from Dark Horse, has been greenlit for Netflix. Spoiler alert: it appears to be the same plot as John Wick 3 will likely be, just with Mads Mikkelsen.
  • Francis Lawrence continues to talk up development on a BSG feature film nodding to both TV series (or both major ones) but going in a more ‘current’ direction… which I take to mean instead of apeing New Hope, it’ll ape whatever’s popular next year. HAR!
  • I appreciated how low-rez R2-D2’s Leia hologram was in Last Jedi, and it did appear to be the original one from New Hope, but I had no idea it was actually rendered more degraded for a 30 years later vibe. I thought it was just the old tech-in-star wars effect from the original film plus the meta old-tech-in modern-film disconnect… kind of meta meta.
  • I see a lot of great cosplays at the shows I do, but man, throw a pro photographer or two at them, and it’s even more impressive
  • Latest in video game interest from the guy who buys them but has no time to play them… Burnout Remastered is coming. LOOOOVE them Burnout games.
  • Which is better: bouquets of donuts, or Pennywise style donut delivery? Why choose!
  • PORG CAKE!
  • Some interesting interview material about Duncan Jones’ Mute, and how it morphed into a sci-fi film from its original noir underpinnings. I wish it was getting better reviews, but I’m still hot to see it.
  • I admit, I’m surprised: test screenings for Aquaman have rated very well, apparently featuring accomplished action sequences. Of course, almost all of these bug supers films have tested well early on because of the demographic for the pre-screening crowd. Justice League and BVS both tested extremely well, as did Age of Ultron.
  • Expanse S03 trailer is finally up, showing little, but readers have a good sense of the story. It’s a doozy.
  • Never enough Yondu
  • this was disturbing. Not surprising, but great to hear he was able to get help in that critical window, which is not common.
  • Did I talk about Outsider already? If so, disregard or nod in affirmation. If not, it’s a Netflix project involving Jared Leto playing a pilot in the 50s trapped in Japan and entering a Yakuza phase. For fun and profit! Looks amazing, to me.
  • Gemma Chan has been cast in the Captain Marvel film as the Kree spy Minn-Erva (hopefully with a name change somewhere down the line because COME ON)
  • First look at Shazam/Captain Marvel’s costume here. Looks very golden age.
  • Not too often that reshoots involve inserting an entirely new character
  • A heavily unsubstantiated rumor is that Winder Woman 2’s villain will be the Cheetah, played by… Emma Stone. Take that as you will. Where are the photomanips?!
  • The trailer for Wreck-It Ralph 2 trailer finally launched. Looks great of course… I admit I wish they weren’t using real app companies… Emoji ruined that forever.
  • Terry Goodkind is a dick.

Bonus: this video game to brief comic adaptation of Peggy Carter as Captain America reminds me of something…

Not the same, but close! And a good seller for me at shows, too…available here, since apparently today I’m just hawkin’ wares…

Thats Just Lazy Writing – Robots Root 9 Feb 2018

Deadpool 2’s new trailer is pretty much spot on what you’d expect, and it works perfectly. Favorite detail: Chunk’s shirt from Goonies! I love it.

  • In Movies that Aren’t Black Widow News: Milla Jovovich has replaced Olivia Munn in Hummingbird. I think she’ll do a fine job but I was looking forward to Munn, who, for all the other obvious reasons i’d be on board about it, hasn’t had a series role like this to date and I was interested in seeing how she’d work.
  • The magical world of what Netflix buys and for what reason continues to intrigue me: for three different reports I’ve read, it appears Abrams and crew new the whole ‘slap Cloverfield references on a sci fi film’ experiment was collapsing, so they sold the project to Netflix for $50M, putting them in the green, as it exceeded their production budget and more importantly allowed them to sidestep the quagmire of marketing costs. Netflix paid a huge sum (though half of the total for Bright) even though they fully understood what they were getting. To say they bought it for post-Super Bowl buzz alone seems almost cynical to write, but that’s the space Netflix is operating in, with the original content streaming wars. We used to ooh and ahh and tssk  the outrageous prices for Super Bowl ad time, but that’s an incredible sum just to convince the 5 remaining non-Netflix subscribers to join, and the remaining 99.9999999% of the civilized world to stay on the service. Which is not to say I won’t watch the film (I will) and BTW, Robot-Kraken Podcast guest host Blake ‘Begin Again’ Simmons implored me to watch Bright, saying it was actually pretty good. SO! More on both projects in next month’s show, I’m guessing.
  • Drunk History features Nichelle Nichols which is pretty awesome. I’d watch it but something in it tripped the sensors in my current host country, so it’ll have to wait.
  • The most reassuring thing about the details on Harrison Ford’s advisory role on Han Solo is reading that he basically just bullshitted about his experience and what Lucas was always talking about, and then just said, go nuts! Paycheck for light aircraft repair bills… but also, no pushing about the impression or some big speech about looking like a young Harrison Ford, just insights into how Ford felt Solo ticked. Pretty great, actually.
  • Apparently the Venom trailer will be released while I’m flying across the Pacific. Either I’ll land to accolades or scorn. About the trailer, not my arrival. Everyone’s excited.
  • Jessica Jones S02 is imminent, and the full trailer looks great. Tone is consistent, actors remain solid… PLUS the addition of Expanse’s Terry Chen (Prax Meng) in a very different role than we last saw for him. That’s AWESOME.
  • So, not sure, but Titan looks like it might be B-Movie material. However it ALSO reads as a video summary of my entire TRDL Universe situation, more or less, so. There’s that! Accidental marketing.
  • I’m sure you’ve seen this by now, but this fan-made alternate opening for Force Awakens is pretty rad. Not for what it was intended, because the mystery and interest in the setting of Jakku was perfect as-is and didn’t need explaining. But rather, just to see them tow a Star Destroyer carcass to a jumk planet and then dump it. The movie made it feel, without explanations, like it crashed there from an aerial battle… never thought of it as wreckage being cleared from dangerous hyperspace traffic areas or what have you. Star Wars has always played loose with the idea of space junk. It’s only there when serving the plot.
  • Delos Destinations viral is making me HOT HOT HOT!
  • This whole exchange on ‘the mutant cure’ is hilarious.
  • An articulated, jet boot sorta havin, repulsor sorta usin, ultra rad Iron Man cosplay… but doods IT CHARGES HIS IPHONE TOO.

Finally, I leave you with this: yawning is contagious.

That Will Buff Out – Robot’s Root 28 Nov 2017

I am definitely the target market for a 1:1 scale mutilated and torched Vader helmet. Thanks!

That root, that sweet, sweet root (very minor JL spoilers below)

  • The interesting thing about this casting for Daredevil S03 isn’t the actor, who I’m sure is fine, but the idea that the role sheet alludes to Sin-Eater, which i would vastly prefer to Nuke being involved in a Born Again storyline.
  • I honestly feel like the superhero film mainstream acceptance has allowed smarter people than me to start slipping in solid cyberpunk projects without the snarky types noticing. Altered Carbon at Netflix??? Awesome.

  • What is even.
  • This video of Daisy Ridley being interviewed supposedly building a Lego Millennium Falcon is peak linkbait. It’s everywhere. Unfortunately, it fils for me in several ways.
    • Her mouth freaks me out
    • She laughs at herself a lot, but not in an endearing way
    • I like her in her roles more than as a human being interviewed, which isn’t often the case
    • She has a curious, if admirable in this oversexualized culture, obsession with stodgy, heavily-patterned clothing
    • And most importantly: she neither builds the Lego herself nor appears to really respect it. RESPECT THE LEGOS.
  • Do you know how much I approve of the concept of a Mendo Doctor Doom? 100% MINIMUM.
  • Lots of hyperbole over what does and doesn’t work in Justice League, and I’m saving my comments for the podcast overall. But one thing I thought I’d note here: some fans have clamored for a Zack Snyder cut to be released (which does not exist) and since he apparently ‘liked’ the petition, it has been taken to mean that it does, and should. I think he just liked the sentiment. Who wouldn’t? His son made comments about how the film was ruined by WB meddling and comedy, and I think that’s a valid position. It’s also a valid position to say that the original likely direction in Snydervision would be a disaster without the lighter tone pulled in by Whedon. The biggest legitimate criticism to be leveled against the finished project is that it feels, as you watch it, uneven enough that you detect when the hands change, like you’re watching two different films smashed together. For the record, I think the Whedon adjustments were a good idea. It is a messy landing, but it still lands as a more ‘superheroic’ film and frankly a lot of people were unhappy with the dark tone of the DCEU and wanted more of what they call the ‘Marvel’ vibe, but mean a more traditional, inspirational comic adventure experience. This is of course ironic as hell given that DC comics was traditionally about vanilla comic adventuring and marvel was borne from real-world, serious civic issues and told stories about relatable humans. That all said, a lot of what doesn’t work in the film is because of schedule, not an overarching ideological divide. They just needed more time. More time for finished FX, more time to properly pace and blend the two tones. Marvel movies can be both dark and comedic at the same time, both heroic and troubling. I’m looking at you, Russo Brothers. So, anyway, when I see all this Snyder vs. Whedon blamery over the film, it amuses me, because both voices are valid. And BTW I still like the darker DCEU tone just fine.
  • PS I also believe Joss Whedon is still actively working on a Batgirl film, and that the rumors of his dismissal are about as legit as the rumors of WB canceling the DCEU after JL… propaganda that came out over the weekend that didn’t do anyone any favors.
  • I like the look of some of the new designs, but the photoshoppery is killing me. Interns aren’t the answer to every chore. I do think we’re going to see alternate universe or post-reality manipulated versions of characters in A3 and A4 but we’ll have to wait and see.
  • Looking at these pics of a test suit unused in the final film (featuring a Kingdom Come style red-S) reminds me that I wish we saw a black suit in JL. Cavill teased it months back, and Zod’s look when he still had the cape was just B A D A S S S S S S S S.
  • Supposedly Gambit starts production in early 2018 after years of delays. Listen, I still think Channing Tatum is far better as a comedian than as a dramatic/action actor, though if they pull off the same sort of tone as he had in Logan Lucky, it could work. He’s risen in my book over the last year or so, and I’d LIKE to see this film happen, especially as a heist story, despite hating the character.

  • Now, Lizzy Caplan being involved is of course 99% why it could succeed. But hey. Bias.
  • I have a perverse love for seeing the voice actors recording dialog from cheesy animation.
  • Here’s some great cosplay (with all that fancy post work) of Ventress from the Clone Wars cartoon, a character on my to-draw list and one I’d love to have seen make it to film.

OK, that’s enough for today. Until next time, crush your darlings, and by darlings, I mean granpappy’s helmet!

Youre Gonna Get Some Hop Ons – Robots Root 17 May 2017

Of course the important news of the day, moreso than impeachable offenses and wonky missiles and health care class warfare and space aliens beached in Indonesia, but no less as inevitable as any of those: officially official confirmation of AD S05. I mean, we knew it was coming, but I’m glad it’s here. In bits and pieces, we’ve learned that Hurwitz is inspired by the election disaster, and that he’s returning to ensemble scenes instead of the ‘follow each character around’ standalones. But also, wow, 2018. I looked it up: the S04 experiment was 2013. I can’t believe it will have been five years.

Meanwhile, THIS HAPPENED:

  • In some strange alternate reality, Robert Zemeckis, Sam Raimi and Matt Vaughn are supposedly in the running for the brutally underdeveloped and problematic Flash film. Why and how is any of that possible.
  • Look. I want Star Trek: Discovery to succeed. I always want these projects to somehow work. And on the face of it, I like this photo. I like the actors, and I really like the old school tricorder in the holster. But really? ENOUGH REY FOR YOU??
  • And look, I have no problem with hyperbole in film promotion… especially when it’s a translation from another language… but this promo material for Last Jedi cracked me up. Everyone’s focusing on how ‘THE BIGGEST SHOCKING REVEAL IN THE HISTORY OF SHOCKING REVEALS EVER EVER WILL BE REVEALED!’ language, but what I thought was funny was the assertion that things got serious once they killed Han Solo. You know, because the deaths of millions in the hand-wavy blowing up of a solar system wasn’t a tragedy or anything.
  • Slaughterhouse Rulez… I mean I’d already be in just because of the pedigree, but I do like that premise. Shithead power schoolkids getting lovecrafted to death while being shitheads? Sounds great!
  • I’m amused by the reference that by the end of Defenders, it will feel like The Hangover… because I don’t know about you, but my drinking increased progressively as I worked through Iron Fist.
  • I wasn’t going to watch any more trailers for Battle for the Toleyou of the Preparation for the Planet of the Apes, but then I did anyway. Looks kick-ass, of course. I didn’t like Woody Harrelson as much in the earlier trailers, other than shaving in front of his troops, which is always a winning move… but here, I love him ranting that (presumably) Caesar is ‘too emotional’ hahahahaha
  • Best quote ever, regarding the sensational lawsuit over blind date texting during GOG2: ““While damages sought are modest, the principle is important as defendant’s behavior is a threat to civilized society,” the suit said.
  • Here’s the first promo material for the new Hellboy film, which features, uh, Hellboy Hellboying around… notable only because hey, it’s new Mike Mignola art, and we need that in this world.
  • For the ultra-rich cosplaying Iron Man fan in your life: dig this concept armor

That’s all for today. Back to mixing your sloshy martinis…

Just a Flesh Wound – 25 April 2017

I didn’t watch the first bridging minifilm for Alien: Covenant, but I did watch this one. I think it’s relevant.

Meanwhile, in space, this Robot’s Root is happening…

  • Best comment ever, regarding that trident there. Yes, I know the 5 point weapon has been in the comics before. Your argument is invalid.
  • I’m stoked at the Robotech resurgence. And an artist I follow, Marco Turini, was tapped to handle art chores on the new comic by Brian Wood. What a cool team-up! My concern is that they will mimic the tone and style of the anime, rather than do a grittier take that suits their own styles. If left to their own devices it would look a lot more like what Paul Pope did with Batman 100. Turini has a detailed, inky thing going on.
  • These 16th c. redesign cosplays are OUT OF CONTROL

  • The highlight of Iron Fist continues to be Jessica Henwick, who I’ve tried to fantasy-cast as pretty much anyone and everyone on the podcast.
  • Great prohibition era photos, feeling right out of the Coen Brothers playbook… but you can tell, as you go through them, that they were staged, even at the time. Still cool.
  • Spoilers if you didn’t listen to our Robot Kraken podcast review of Powerless, or watch it your own self: no longer an option.
  • Is Once Upon a Time in Venice a good bad movie, a bad bad movie, or just the worst example of trailer editing in the history of the form? I want it to be good.
  • DC just announced a Teen Titans live-action series launch. Which is great for DC fans. However they are using it to launch a streaming service, showing they learned nothing from Paramount.
  • I love James Bond. Which is Kingsman, these days. Just look at it. LOOK AT IT.
  • I also didnt watch Split, but I did learn about the stunt ending, tying it to Unbreakable (sorry, common knowledge now) and saw the awesome film recap here from Earthling Cinema. Anyway, M. Knight Toleyou announced Glass, the third film, will bring them all together. I look forward to it.
  • When Zoe Saldana says she wants to be in Dune, LET HER.
  • Shane Black confirms Predator will use practical FX. Music to my ears. And by eyes. Or something.

That’s all for now! Wipe your eyeballs down and find your center.

You Bring the Silicone I’ll Bring the Sealant – 7 March 2017

Image
link!
Look, you know I’ve thrown my chips in on this film, and it’s not a view shared by everyone I talk to, or even very many. But all this WETA practical work is KILLING me, I love it. All silicone, three layer suit, with no seaming. Makes me think of Ross Gellar and the leather pants scene with all the talcum. Anyway, points for teaching me the term PAULDRON, something I draw and design every day and never knew had a proper name in plate male design, and more points for the use of magnets to hold them on the shoulder so they move properly with the rotator cuff. So much work for something most in the audience will just assume is CGI.

Meanwhile:

– I’m not watching Gotham any longer. I just can’t even. But the best choice they’ve made yet is casting Siddig as Ra’s Al Ghul. I’ve loved this actor in the modern era, so much more than his stint on Star Trek. He was memorable (and underutilized) in Game of Toles, and has surfaced in Peaky Blinders S03 as well. Love him.
link!

– Here’s the first official shots of the punk rock styling of Hela, Thor, and Valkyrie in Thor 3. The short hair on Thor will be polarizing, I’m sure. Almost distracting the complainers from the ethnic shifting on Valkyrie? Probably not, knowing the racist interweb.
link!

– I love the CONCEPT of local real life superhero propaganda figures in the community more than the execution, generally, but this guy actually makes a good case for the ‘homegrown superhero costume’ thing that actually looks reasonable. I can see this as Parker’s first suit, for example.
link!

– Neat video on all the CGI overlayed acting doubles in Logan. i can tell you, you never notice.
link!

– Also, here’s yet another look at that fake comic from the film. SAURON, ha.
link!

– Again, I’m stunned that Netflix greenlit Bright, and against my own bias, I’m going to watch it.
link!

– Michael K Williams has been stealing scenes in a lot of stuff… but wow, he’s going to be a crowd pleaser in Han Solo, no doubt.
link!

– Inhumans roundup for today:
1. Lockjaw being a thing is the best news yet. I have a fondness for the giant teleporting bulldog. Plus, photos from the set show him in pre-CGI massing. Also, Ken Leung joined, which is excellent news. Also, the rest of the casting bores me. It’s a toss up.
link!
link!
link!
link!

– This set of Lego wings is slaying me. I’m so amateur. RAD.
link!

– Jason Issacs has joined ST: Discovery as the Captain. Notable specifically because he won’t be the focus of the narrative, the one conceit that intrigues me about this project.
link!

– Notes from the Beetlejuice that never was.
link!

– Amy Acker joining the X-Men show on Fox is great news, because she’s amazing and desirable. Unfortunately the premise for this show leaves me cold.
link!

– We just talked about Tron 3… now the scuttlebutt is that Disney wants to soft reboot with Jared Leto in the lead role, playing a character that was originally included in the previous Tron 3 script but in a lesser role.
link!

– Here’s the new ‘tamer, lighter’ Batmobile, friends.
link!

-Finally, if you have seen Logan already and want another look, or don’t mind being spoiled if you haven’t, here’s that much ballyhood extra thing:
link!

That’s all for now! I’m hard at work on the TRDL Sourcebooks and Kris is pushing on completing his Princess Bride poster in time for FanX next week. Busy busy. Also, tonight we will begin recording this month’s podcast segments. And hopefully release March’s show.

Practical FX Always Win – 2 March 2017

Image
It’s no secret I’m dying to see this one and am highly, dangerously, optimistic. But this many practical effects? DYING. D Y I N G. So is Adam Savage. PS the cybergeisha is my favorite anything ever. Now… where’s the Fuchikomas?
link!

Sorry for the delay on this post… rL got in the way…

Meanwhle…

– Lung and I were talking about this over the weekend. Hard to believe this project actually went forward, but I’ll five it a shot. I mean, my hatred for Shadowrun is undaunted, but still…
Orc Cops! AMIRITE. link!

– This cosplay of a girl WW with an invisible jet made from clear balloons it the new gold standard. See what I did there. Gold. Standard.
link!

– This image has been floating around. Comics? Film? Probably comics. Still, it’s an old trope at Marvel, but seems to have new blood. So to speak. Many, many young artists have doodled Hulk with claws…
link!

– This collection of photos of the Mad Max Fury Road vehicles before they were butchered on set is very inspiring. #homeremodelgoals
link!

– This is the most touching tribute to Bill Paxton yet:
link!

– So. Suicide Squad… is an Oscar winner now.
link!

– They promised us jetpacks. THEY DELIVERED.
link!

– Meet your Overlords Exhibit 43433: now they can do tricks while killing you. SHRED then DEAD!

Come With Me If You Want to Save the Franchise – 170126

Image
So, what do you think? Tim Miller on Terminator? Any chance of bailing this ship out? We talk about this one on the podcast in February… link!

Meanwhile, this:

– Look, I gave up on Gotham a long time ago. It was never great, but at least had some atmospheric style. It went from soapy cheese to a garbage fire in record time. That said, I will give them this and only this: I’ve been pining for someone to do the Joker thing from the New 52 where his face has been cut off and then haphazardly sewn back on. It’s so unnervingly icky (and infected, presumably)… so, at least they tried it. link!

– From now on, as far as cosplay goes, I will accept NO LESS than a full scale ED-209. link!

– Thomas Jane in Predator? Before seeing Expanse I’d have been against it. Now… link!

– Neill Blomkamp is not encouraging. link!

– I’ve been using these as desktop screens of late: focus on the retro-future GUI in Rogue One: link!

– GIJoe + Transformers… would you have been in? I would not have been in. I would have been more out than I already am. link!

– So, uh, according to this, DC/WB will give the obscure antihero villain of their obscure supers film his OWN film… yet still can’t figure out how to make the DC pantheon work? link!

– I liked the admittedly uneven Amazon Tick pilot… interesting to imagine Warburton back in the costume, though. link!
