That Will Buff Out – Robot’s Root 28 Nov 2017

I am definitely the target market for a 1:1 scale mutilated and torched Vader helmet. Thanks!

That root, that sweet, sweet root (very minor JL spoilers below)

  • The interesting thing about this casting for Daredevil S03 isn’t the actor, who I’m sure is fine, but the idea that the role sheet alludes to Sin-Eater, which i would vastly prefer to Nuke being involved in a Born Again storyline.
  • I honestly feel like the superhero film mainstream acceptance has allowed smarter people than me to start slipping in solid cyberpunk projects without the snarky types noticing. Altered Carbon at Netflix??? Awesome.

  • What is even.
  • This video of Daisy Ridley being interviewed supposedly building a Lego Millennium Falcon is peak linkbait. It’s everywhere. Unfortunately, it fils for me in several ways.
    • Her mouth freaks me out
    • She laughs at herself a lot, but not in an endearing way
    • I like her in her roles more than as a human being interviewed, which isn’t often the case
    • She has a curious, if admirable in this oversexualized culture, obsession with stodgy, heavily-patterned clothing
    • And most importantly: she neither builds the Lego herself nor appears to really respect it. RESPECT THE LEGOS.
  • Do you know how much I approve of the concept of a Mendo Doctor Doom? 100% MINIMUM.
  • Lots of hyperbole over what does and doesn’t work in Justice League, and I’m saving my comments for the podcast overall. But one thing I thought I’d note here: some fans have clamored for a Zack Snyder cut to be released (which does not exist) and since he apparently ‘liked’ the petition, it has been taken to mean that it does, and should. I think he just liked the sentiment. Who wouldn’t? His son made comments about how the film was ruined by WB meddling and comedy, and I think that’s a valid position. It’s also a valid position to say that the original likely direction in Snydervision would be a disaster without the lighter tone pulled in by Whedon. The biggest legitimate criticism to be leveled against the finished project is that it feels, as you watch it, uneven enough that you detect when the hands change, like you’re watching two different films smashed together. For the record, I think the Whedon adjustments were a good idea. It is a messy landing, but it still lands as a more ‘superheroic’ film and frankly a lot of people were unhappy with the dark tone of the DCEU and wanted more of what they call the ‘Marvel’ vibe, but mean a more traditional, inspirational comic adventure experience. This is of course ironic as hell given that DC comics was traditionally about vanilla comic adventuring and marvel was borne from real-world, serious civic issues and told stories about relatable humans. That all said, a lot of what doesn’t work in the film is because of schedule, not an overarching ideological divide. They just needed more time. More time for finished FX, more time to properly pace and blend the two tones. Marvel movies can be both dark and comedic at the same time, both heroic and troubling. I’m looking at you, Russo Brothers. So, anyway, when I see all this Snyder vs. Whedon blamery over the film, it amuses me, because both voices are valid. And BTW I still like the darker DCEU tone just fine.
  • PS I also believe Joss Whedon is still actively working on a Batgirl film, and that the rumors of his dismissal are about as legit as the rumors of WB canceling the DCEU after JL… propaganda that came out over the weekend that didn’t do anyone any favors.
  • I like the look of some of the new designs, but the photoshoppery is killing me. Interns aren’t the answer to every chore. I do think we’re going to see alternate universe or post-reality manipulated versions of characters in A3 and A4 but we’ll have to wait and see.
  • Looking at these pics of a test suit unused in the final film (featuring a Kingdom Come style red-S) reminds me that I wish we saw a black suit in JL. Cavill teased it months back, and Zod’s look when he still had the cape was just B A D A S S S S S S S S.
  • Supposedly Gambit starts production in early 2018 after years of delays. Listen, I still think Channing Tatum is far better as a comedian than as a dramatic/action actor, though if they pull off the same sort of tone as he had in Logan Lucky, it could work. He’s risen in my book over the last year or so, and I’d LIKE to see this film happen, especially as a heist story, despite hating the character.

  • Now, Lizzy Caplan being involved is of course 99% why it could succeed. But hey. Bias.
  • I have a perverse love for seeing the voice actors recording dialog from cheesy animation.
  • Here’s some great cosplay (with all that fancy post work) of Ventress from the Clone Wars cartoon, a character on my to-draw list and one I’d love to have seen make it to film.

OK, that’s enough for today. Until next time, crush your darlings, and by darlings, I mean granpappy’s helmet!

Whose Soul Is This – Robots Root 28 July 2017

Let me just quickly say that the latest episode of Preacher was devastating. I don’t recall if this Cassidy detail was in the comic, but it was beautiful and tragic and so well done. Gilgun is owning this show. Moving on…

Robot’s Root!

  • Disenchantment, a new animated series from Matt Groening, is coming… at some point… and will be excellent. Postmodern, adult fantasy. I’ll take it!
  • Suburbicon is George Clooney doing his best Coen Brothers impression, but I’m fine with that.
  • This posits that Villenueve is on the shortlist for the next Bond film. While I loved the speculative rumor about Nolan taking on a future version of the franchise, I’d be very interested in a Villenueve version as well.
  • Here’s that infamous suit, which you can, and surely should, own today!
  • The latest in Deadwood non-news: now the script is in, and is excellent, and HBO… just needs to… get all cast together, get a budget worked out… you know, little things.
  • Everything you wanted to know about Batman’s ‘tactical suit’ in JL… including floating armor plates that don’t do anything, and straps to nowhere! It’s not that I don’t like it. It has strengths, too. But still, some odd choices.
  • Spencer Wilding has been discovered working on Han Solo. WHAT DOES IT MEAN.
  • Apparently, the next Arrested Development season will be a whodonit about the murder of Lucille. What a great concept.
  • Still struggle with all the humanoid, smooth armored new Jaegers, but the promo from SDCC looks pretty OK.
  • This is NOT the publicity that WB wanted for JL… sort of like all the other publicity they didn’t want. I love all the Cesar Romero Joker images on Twitter this week…
  • Having flown all week, I’ve been thinking a fair amount about this boondoggle after SDCC, in which United claimed travelers couldn’t check comics, and blamed the TSA, which turned it back around on United again. Can you imagine how upset those congoers must have been? I can.
  • “She’s a robocop with a weird robo-walk with a weakness for being snuck up on by dudes with tasers!” Honest Trailer for GitS. I love it.

multiPost 001 – 3 Jan 2017

Image

Welcome to multiPost. Your gods are dead.

First up: fear not, semi-true-believers, the Robot-Kraken podcast lives, and the new episode for January 2017 will be released shortly. We’ve made some minor tweaks: we are moving to a long-episode format and an annual release schedule. Wait, monthly. Anyway, everything else is pretty much the same. The longer overall episodes mean less structure and more fiddle faddle, which is a fine thing, friends. On to that which has happened:

1. An oldie but still number-one-goodie: chinese bootleg dvd mistranslations of Revenge of the Sith. So awesome. Considerably more awesome than the original film. link!

2. It’s not the long gestating movie franchise, but Robotech is resurfacing (again) in comic form (again) with accomplished scribe Brian Wood at the helm. Lets be positive. link!

3. Here’s a cool exercise, though not as rad as the Samurai-Star Wars stuff, though also at true scale… my favorite details are in the back. That’swhatshe- link!

4. With this AT-AT, the eyes have it: link!

5. Interesting supposition that there will be a mommy daddy feud over JL ownership… interesting dynamic. link!

6. Not sure I parse why the xonomorph’s skull has internal vertebrae and no brain case, but anyway, I know at least ONE GUY with a new house needing decorating… link!

7. Finally, the truth is out there: the reality behind that Elf spaghetti. Shudder! link!

Happy #2017 which so far is winning over #2016.

I Will Not Kill You – 11 Aug 2016

Image
Well, I’ve been waiting all day for this one. No disappointments, other than that they should have never revealed Vader, period. But hot damn.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frdj1zb9sMY

Image
Watch carefully for this scene!

Meanwhile, somewhere in space, this is happening:

Image
ITEM: Brad Kremer just released a digital animated homage to the opening sequence in Akira, and it burns, IT BURNS. With white hot rage that i cannot see a digital or live action version of this film that is this faithful to the imagery and tone that made the original OAV so good.

“This project started many years ago when both Dean and I lived on Tybee Island. I came to Dean with the idea to do a tribute “trailer” to Akira. As a long time fan of the original film he of course loved the idea! As we brainstormed the story that we wanted to explore from the film we settled on focusing primarily on the bike. The Akira bike is one of those iconic symbols that still remains relevant today similar to the Millennium Falcon or Marty McFly’s beat up DeLorean.
Since that first day when Dean and I began this journey we have both moved a number of times. But we always kept the project alive with a lot of late nights (mostly from Dean), re-edits and re-renders, and a lot of discussions about how to improve it. And so, after countless hours of modeling and rendering we are ready to share with you this short tribute to the masterpiece that Katsuhiro Otomo created and shared with us so many years ago. We hope you enjoy!”

ITEM: Die Antwoord have taken to IG to accuse David Ayers and his design team of apeing their steez. I think it’s mostly a stretch. But three watches, hey!
http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-enter … ebook-post

:::

Image
ITEM: Meanwhile, Ayers describes SS as an ‘anarchic punk rock art film’ and states it was never envisioned as an R-rated film, which we know. I can’t help but think he is protesting long and hard that there wasn’t a hellstorm of studio interference after BVS in the editing room, but I also think he’s been savvy ie. anti Trank, and resisting the defensive urge to bite the studio hands that fed him. Which actually isn’t very punk rock… but look, I think when they sign on to these big tentpoles they go in knowing the final product will be a mutation beyond their original vision, and some directors, like Ayers, takes it as part of the game, and considers it behind the curtain business not to be vented about, and others are less prepared, and complain. And I say all this, prior to writing or recording my review of the film, as someone who saw many flaws, or particularly missed opportunities, and especially noticed signs of heavy editing… but still REALLY had fun, so haters gon’ hate, and I appreciate Ayers for standing up for the commercial product he created. Additionally, I like his connections between choice and addiction, though it wasn’t as apparent in the film. PS, he indicated Joker killed Robin, not Harley.
http://geektyrant.com/news/david-ayer-d … -art-movie

Also, also, laughably these dudes are trying to sue because of not enough Joker, etc. I love it. Good luck, kids. It is QUITE apparent they cut a lot of Joker out of it, and not just from Leto’s running commentary, either. The trailer material alone, the narrative… and in fact, as an aside I’ll talk more about later, I LIKE that what they DID leave in paints the Joker/Harley romance as a love affair rather than a perpetual mindfuck of domestic violence.

ITEM: As was reported last week, the Tinkerer is apparently in Spidey: Homecoming, and being played by Michael Cherrus. Now, what just started floating around is that the Shocker makes an appearance. Awkward contemporary name references aside, if true, I do hope it is, as we talked about on the Robot-Kraken Podcast, a matter of multiple villains employed to decoy or work together ehind someone else’s agenda, and not just a pile-on. SO MANY MEETINGS.

Moving on… fun stuff….

Image
Good on Nic Cage for going to the con and just rifling through stuff, buying whatever he wants, and getting into it again. The rumor I heard years ago was that he sold his massive comic collection because Lisa Marie Presley asked him to, but after the divorce he wanted to ramp back up but the financial issues he had forced him to rebuild more slowly than he once could. I like the idea of a celebrity being a guy with a hobby. I like that he’s at a con rather than buying from private collectors or visiting shops after hours. He’s not just swooping in and buying everything, but flipping through like the fan he is. Check out that Ghost Rider painting… pretty rad.

Justice league Stuff for Today:

Image
– The Flash uniform is envisioned as being a prototype in development, lots of front armor and aero swept fins and things to the back, different materials. Sound a lot like stuff I’d do, so obviously I approve in concept.
http://geektyrant.com/news/details-on-t … ue-costume

Image***
– New Bat vehicles are described… a dune buggy that has spider-limbs, and a giant cargo plane that carries a Batmobile, a bunch of Batweapons, the non-flying members of the Justice League (though I never understood why fliers would want to hurtle around in the wind instead of ride in the vehicle and check their instagrams or whatever) and then a two-seater cockpit on the third level in the back. The former sounds like a hot mess and the latter sounds interesting, but both could be amazing or terrible, depending on the actual design. Most tech vehicles in anime/manga, if described on paper, would sound like garbage. But look at them. Right? I choose to be optimistic.

The full trailer for Jack Reacher – Never Go Back is out, devoid of the EW commentary, and it looks like a solid Jack Reacher film, even if the trailer shows too much. New Star Wars Rogue One cover image… the bot’s got longer, spindlier limbs than I was expecting. These new posters for Suicide Squad are interesting, with the pop art zaniness and this new marketing push with ‘worst. heroes. ever’ stuff. Trying really hard, though, aren’t they.

Interesting comments from Marvel’s Tom Brevoort about the DC Rebirth twist of…SPOILER… integrating the Watchmen continuity into mainstream DC continuity, and making Dr. Manhattan the big bad. He says he’d have done it too, and sooner. I enjoy when creators aren’t just reflexively shitting on the moves of the competition. We can thank the modern era of creator fluidity among the major companies and their own creator-owned works… not too long ago, creators were encamped in their primary company’s vaults, fed cheesy poofs and chained to a desk. I mean, not really, but it’s never been as soft a border as it is today. Many high level executive decisions are scrutinized, but it’s difficult for fans and creators alike to disparage an entire company’s material, when each company has good talent working for them, that also has or will work for the competitor as well. Interesting side note: I think this has a lot to do with how each company has shifted away from their long-standing ideological or thematic vibe (DC being stuffy, conservative, legacy-minded; Marvel being edgy, street minded)… as the writers have been bringing opposing sensibilities across that border for many years.

Watch the Titanic sink in real time? Who would want to watch that? Actually, it is extremely sobering and frankly, haunting. I skipped ahead to each of the caption moments but still, all in I probably committed about 45 minutes to it over 2 days. I was struck by how SLOW it is. 2.5 hours from strike to sink, and lots of time verrrry slowly failing. Watching the various systems collapse, for example, or how the power reductions meant narrower and narrower telegraph range… the blunders with the lifeboats are well documented and tragic to watch unfold in realtime, and when it sinks, knowing that 1,500 people are still aboard is especially haunting. I was struck by how un-Hollywood it is for the majority of the piece. Slowing, stopping, resuming, stopping, hanging out, gradually engaging in the evacuation… not the sturm and drang of the film… though the last 45 seconds or so are very similar. It’s also creepy that there are no humans rendered in the video. That, along with the calm waters and huge starry sky… make for a chilling viewing. Recommended!

Lastly, I stumbled across this rarity at a local small toy store. TWO SUPERHERO FIGURES, FEMALE, IN THE SAME STORE.
Le sigh.

The controversy over the latest jab at the GitS film seems suspicious to me. The ‘multiple independent insider sources’ claim Lola FX was asked to ‘Asiafy’ Scarlett Johansson as a test, following the negative PR over her casting as Motoko… though immediately I wondered why any studio would suggest that approach in the modern era, let alone as a response to accusations of whitewashing. Then the report was violently disputed, several versions. It’s believable, I guess, that they would be that stupid, and it’s also believable, surely, that they would deny deny deny. But to me this raises larger questions, especially in a year that saw public outrage over several whitewashing casting choices the previous summer: does it matter? It cracks open the whole issue, not only of casting ethnically-specific characters as other ethnicities, but also whether their ethnicity is part of their character at all. I totally understand why the Asian international community would find suspect a film about Japanese characters in Japan casting largely Asian actors but changing the main lead to a non-Asian character and actor. However, is this not about box office draw and star-linkage to a film to make it a reality, financially, above all else? It reminds me of the whole thing about changing black characters white (conservative, cowardly) or white characters black (brave or offensive, depending on who is commenting) when it comes to super hero roles. Personally, I love when interesting actors are cast in these roles, regardless of what the source material called for, if it defined the ethnicity at all. Yet, I’m of course the white male box office majority viewer, who isn’t negatively impacted as an individual, culture, or ethnicity as a whole, by these decisions. I see why people are pissed. I just don’t think they are acknowledging the reality of financing movies and how little the executives and fund managers care about cultural sensitivity, alignment to source material, or anything else. EVERY character would look like a turnip if turnips were the biggest draw internationally. And frankly, some think Scarlett Johansson LOOKS like a turnip.

Personally, I’d have loved to see a truly all Asian cast for this film. So many great actors out there that would fit the bill, not only by ethnicity and look, by talent as well. I’m just not surprised that Hollywood didn’t commit to that concept.

Plus, as Lung said to me offline, the OTHER takeaway from this article that was unnerving was the accusation that VFX were used to thin and curve out actors… much like photo retouching. I knew about the latter, but not about the former. Nauseating.

Meanwhile, this sampling of Japanese viewers commenting on the photo was enlightening. My favorite:

At first $18M sounded steep. Now, having read through it, it seems like a deal.

Well, THAT is interesting… for the new Jon Watts Spidey film with the logotype I’m still in denial about, Feige says Marvel is doing all creative production… so that means Sony is slapping their name on it, and Marvel is making the script, casting, and visual decisions. Thats… that’s VERY good news.

Never say never, but the utter lack of promotion for the soon to arrive Star Trek Beyond the Beyond or Whatever is NOT a good sign. First, helm changes (for the film, anyway), and then accusations of reworks, questionable trailers, radio silence…hm. I want to believe.

Spencer Wilding, from GoT and Guardians, will be the physical form of Darth Vader in Rogue One. He’s even taller than Prouse and I think has the right imposing mass for the character, who should instill fear on approach. I’m delighted.

Natalie Portman is out on Thor 3, which isn’t really surprising, and Tessa Thompson is in, as someone ‘superhero-ish’… let the speculation begin. Nice to see more women of non-white ethnicity in these roles in general. Endorsed.

Inhumans is being bumped indefinitely. Between bringing Spider-Man into the fold and the ongoing war with Permutter’s TV division, I’m not terribly shocked. However, SHIELD has firmly established Inhumans as the MCU/TV version of mutants, and did a good job of it, so there’s no reason this can’t jump to film, if they ever just address the power conflict between Permutter (not my favorite) and Fiege. That said, if they would just move all the Marvel properties to Netflix, I’d be even happier.

Three different actors have indicated that AD S05, whenever that happens, will return the cast to an ensemble process in lieu of the schedule-driven solo character arc thing they did for S04 (which I still loved)… so it could be 2032 before this happens, but it’ll be awesome reGARTless.
