Does it Come in Black – Robot’s Root 30 Aug 2018

Here’s a great in-depth look at my favorite movie vehicle ever. Ever ever? Ever EVER! Having just rewatched Dark Knight on IMAX, I was geeking out over it anew.

  • Mahershala Ali is one of my favorite go-to actors right now. I’m super stoked to finally catch a glimpse at the first trailer for True Detective S03. I’m completely in.
  • As my french teacher used to sadly mumble: ‘Pauvre Thom, pauvre pauvre Thom.’
  • Approximately 0.00003% of the known world wonders what project Taika Waititi might be meeting Marvel about.
  • Oscar Isaacs in Batman? I hope he plays a conflicted detective. hahahahahahhahaha. He looks good in suits looking troubled. Alec Baldwin, however, is NOT playing Thomas Wayne in Joker, a mere two days after being reported as cast. I love when one of my queued tabs cancels the previous one out.
  • It’s a Monday, so Psylocke is back to being a pink haired anglo saxon
  • Hans Zimmer’s retirement from super hero movies is apparently over. Good.
  • I mean, with that much blood, how could it NOT.
  • Lung sent me this amazing pumpkin carving, straight out of R’Lyeh. Check it out. However, you may need to take advantage of this to get ready to try your hand at it.
  • Don’t tell me Matt Smith won’t be Thrawn. Look at that forehead. LOOK AT IT.
  • Roadrunner was the one cartoon growing up that made me laugh until I cried as a wee one. I’m pretty stoked on the idea of a new COYOTE VS ACME film. I’m sort of bemused they didn’t use COYOTE V ACME just to be cheeky.
  • Though this one-hour gameplay demo was met with at best lukewarm reviews from the gaming community, I thought it looked GREAT. I love old school cyberpunk RPG action. Really takes me back! It’s like Battle Angel Alita… hopefully. But while I’d never have time to play this game, I love that it exists.
  • I Think We’re Alone Now is one of the films I’m most looking forward to right now. Between the pedigree behind the camera (early Handsmaid’s Tale eps) and the wattage of Peter Dinklage’s understated acting, it’s going to be fierce.
  • Soon to be seen under an Xmas tree of a Lung near you.
  • I love watching Dwayne Johnson when he’s in his element but also playing it broad a bit (like Jumanji)… but this is straight out of the DONT DO THIS DEPT.

We are frantically preparing for Rose City Comic Con (and for Kris, multiple cons) so hopefully we’ll see some of you in a week!

What Star Wars Needs is a Memorable Villain, They All Said – Robots Root 6 Aug 2018

The rumor mill speculates that Richard E. Grant will play Thrawn in Star Wars Ep. VIII. I don’t have any emotional attachment to the character, not having read the books, and I always thought his blue skin looked weird with the white uniform… but I DO like the idea of bringing in a new big bad. It’s hard to imagine they’d waste such a big Extended Universe character on one film… and in the timeline of stories they talk about doing, I don’t see how they’d use him elsewhere. It made me think, awhile back, when Rian Johnson got that undefined new trilogy to play with, that Thrawn might be the big bad in THOSE films…

Meanwhile, in space, this could be happening:

  • Claire (Rosario Dawson) brings some real world logic and empathy to the Netflix Marvel series of series. That said, she’s not in IF 2.0, and I assumed it was because she’s got a career and other commitments happening… I read in a few places people are relieved because it’s irrational that she’s in all these stories but has no powers. WHAT? One of the strong points about all of the Marvel Netflix projects is the way the NPC’s, or regular folks, are written into the story in a meaningful way. It’s one of the things I love about them. It’s not just powered people tussling, but the interaction between them and the people they affect. SO while I DO often think ‘why aren’t they calling each other for help’ or ‘why isn’t claire calling in reinforcements’ I do like that they’ve tried to explain it in terms of unavailability or personal issues or ‘this is my fight’ type of stuff. We don’t need five different Defenders arcs, though admittedly those team-ups are what make some of the Marvel MCU films so interesting. But as is often noted about all of the TV projects… this isn’t the MCU.
  • Bryan Callen and Marc Maron are the latest to join this surreal Joker film… what is even.
  • Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson seem to have charisma together, so that’s a thing.
  • In a moment of pure marketing genius, Turkish Airlines have offered a safety video tie in to Lego Movie 2. This sure beats watching Wonder Woman not stow her shield and sword FFS on that other attempt.
  • Everyone’s still rah-rahing about Linda Hamilton in the Aviators, but I’m all about those lines on Mackenzie Davis’ skin. Did we already officially know she was a new Terminator model, or a Terminator period? I LOVE that look.
  • I understand why they deleted this scene between Gamora and Thanos in the final cut, as it drags and is tonally off from what we saw of him the rest of the film more concisely. However it IS cool to see Gamora dressed as his champion. CHAMPION BRAIDS.
  • This too can be yours, for a mere $1200. I’m so in. But not really in. But wish i was in.
  • Here’s a brilliant study on how Bottle Rocket DID set the stage for Wes Anderson’s later more obvious moves. I’m among the Andersonites that saw it, even as a raw version, of being consistent with his catalog, but I’ve heard the argument several times that it wasn’t. I would argue it is closer to his later vision than Blood Simple was for the Coen Brothers to their’s.

Stay Frosty and Alert – Robots Root 16 July 2018

Zombieland 2 is finally happening, with the whole cast returning, and I’m stoked. In an era of unnecessary sequels, this is one I’m actually excited about. MIGHT have something to do with Emma Stone, admittedly.

:::

Meanwhile, in space:

  • Wait, WHUT. A new Robocop is coming… but not a follow-up to the film from a few years ago… but as a sequel or connected film to the original Robocop. I *think* they plan on bypassing Robocop 2 as well. Look, I don’t care, just imagine: Neil Blomkamp doing the patented cavalcade of failing ED-209 designs malfunctioning?! I’m down with that sort of business.
  • Shazam doesn’t look bad at all, visually. The muscles look 3% less plastic, and Zachary Levi’s whimsy is definitely showing here. The choice of this as the first official photo is deliberate, and it reads strongly of the ‘Big’ reference, which I think is a good direction to diversify from other supers films, particularly the DCEU’s current slate.
  • Y the Last Man has been cast, and while I haven’t read the series, I’ve followed the production of this for years now, and I think it sounds like an interesting story. Good casting thus far.
  • I’m only interested if there is curb mounting.
  • I’ve talked about this a lot over the last few months with mainstream folks, but I just can’t get over how tickled I am that 3 years ago, Kristin Wiig (and everyone else) would never have imagined she would be the star villain in a major Wonder Woman film with female leadership. SO cool.

  • Now, I haven’t seen the latest film, but I’m into the development of Glass. The early images are rad… supers therapy!
  • The only thing of interest here is that its the new best manip of Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam.
  • More on the Joaquin Phoenix Joker situation. I mean, the takeaway here is the reminder that Phoenix goes after weird and interesting projects, seems interested in this one, and of course, side-eye at Marvel over the Dr Strange project. We were just talking about this on the podcast last night, but I forgot about his aborted Strange…
  • Joss Whedon is not without his controversy these days, over his infidelity and weird heeby-jeebs about his female characters and how he treats the actresses who play them… however I will say the concept of Victotorian-era supers femmes as an HBO project sounds GREAT!
  • Cate Shortland has beat out apparently 70+ other directors to helm the Black Widow film. I like that it’s a female director with some unique vision in the indie scene, and I like that the project is moving forward, even as the rumored script moves backwards (which is also good to me)…
  • YUSSS William Gibson’s Aliens 3 script has been adapted to comics form, and I cannot wait. It was D O P E and sad that they never went that direction. I saw a treatment years and years ago, and it featured themes we take for granted in SF today, very much like something out of Expanse: dueling governments, space station panic, etc.
  • Titan Comics has apparently been granted a license to tell in-canon stories set in the Blade Runner 2049 universe. I’m not familiar with them, or their pedigree, and no samples have yet been made available, but I hear there’s a big convention this weekend, so…

Thats all for now. STAY FROSTY I says.

Cackling in 3 Frames Per Second – Robots Root 30 June 2018

Now you too can have a laughing Prince Adam figure of your very own. Memetic!

I’m done with my Spring conventions, and now in Washington on a short vacation with the younglings. Here’s a blast of interesting somethings over the last few weeks!

  • Wonder Woman + George Orwell? You decide!
  • Everyone’s talking about that Black Manta helmet, but I’m all about Orm’s sweet hairstyle.
  • Apologists and recontextualists aside, these comments nauseated me.
  • If nothing else, Red Notice sure has an eye-catching cast.
  • You too can build an Alexa-enabled L3-37. But… should you?
  • Preacher 3 is only a week away!
  • Incredibles 2 was a hoot… and the weekend box office sure seems to indicate people realized it. It does look decidedly familiar… by design.
  • Here’s a great video of Andy Serkis discussing mocap’s evolution
  • Here’s an interesting article positing that Shazam should be the path to the future of the DCEU.
  • As someone who works in a small, pressure-cooker environment without HR and with unconventional, lets say, communication from time to time, I’ve been following the discussion on workplace abuse in Hollywood (a mechanism for talking about it not in Hollywood, of course. ie. the real world)… the sexual abuse and sexual politics are very obviously evil, but the verbal abuse has been something that creators in the entertainment industry have been forgiven for (as long as they are ‘successful’ and ‘auteurs’, my emphasis… on the one hand, some people need to be more prepared and clear about the hostile environments they are getting into, and on the other hand, people should be respectful, or there should be consequences. Interesting debate.
  • Everyone’s laughing about how they isolated Iron Fist knowingly. I just loved that they included Colleen Wing!

More to come!

Super Tole – Robots Root 5 Feb 2018

IT DOESN’T LOOK LIKE ANYTHING TO ME!!!!

I love the Super Bowl. I don’t watch the Super Bowl. But I like the ads. THE ADS!

A selection of nerd items I enjoyed…

  • I still wish the Croc Dundee stunt was a real movie I’d see the SHIT out of. But anyway. The previous trailer was actually better but this was the ‘reveal’ that surprised no one. It was almost like waiting for your lover to break up with you and then it happens and you’re almost relieved its over.
  • I said I wouldn’t watch it. I lay in my bed, tossing and turning (remember, I’m in Indonesia right now, so future) but then I did anyway. I like the Iron Man armor as realized from the concept art. I don’t get Spidey unmasking in the ring gate scene. I do love that Thanos sneer. This was less exciting than several other trailers, which doesn’t speak negatively of Avengers as much as positively of those other properties that we see the FIRST footage of, instead.
  • Another Red Sparrow trailer that chips away further at the Black Widow film to come.
  • I really like watching Dwayne Johnson. But I’m struggling with this project because leave Die Hard alone. Thanxxxx. Also I spent all day on the 63rd floor of my building, so.
  • Jurassic World Fallen Toleyou continues to trade on Chris Pratt’s charm, and it works.
  • I really enjoy the more recent Mission Impossible stuff… usually… Rogue Nation being the exception because Lung’s blueberries. Anyway, this looks looks great. You just can’t unsee the ankle shattering.
  • Holy shit, Cloverfield Paradox went to Netflix instead of theaters and is ALREADY live?!? I mean, not for me. I’m locked out regionally atm. But still. For YOU!
  • And lastly, of COURSE, the promised Solo teaser. I would have put this at the top, I was just so unprepared for how rabidly I want more Westworld. But there’s much to unpack in Solo. I’m waiting for the full trailer tomorrow. Today. Tomorrow. Gah! Anyway, so many things.

Meanwhile, this twitter response, which the kids today call a clap back, was awesome.

As the World Turns, So Does Robots Root – 12 April 2017

Thus and therefore, I bring your: Robot’s Root! 12 April 2017. And unless you are reading this from Southeast Asia, this is a time traveling post! Because very likely, it is not the 12th for you just yet. I pity you and your mortal limitations!

  • MI:6 has officially begun production. Here’s what made me laugh about this: I thought it already was. Because I was thinking about the Mummy airplane business. And since the Mummy appears to be Bourne Identity… and MI wants to be Bourne Identity… it just. Well. Ah.
  • Following the previously released Thor 3 trailer, here’s Mr Sunday Movies’ reliably awesome recap and speculation video. Pretty good stuff, right here.
  • Hyper-real Ren and Stimpy masks, which I love, because that was a critical early innovation of the cartoon, the use of creepy painted scenes cut into the animation. Always with stink!
  • I loved this: computer viruses reimagined as cyberpunk characters. Sort of. Great color choices anyway!
  • This is tolly random, but I just found the DVD-released final mini-episode that came out after LOST ended that acts as sort of a tie-up-loose-ends deal. It’s not magic or anything, but reminded me how much I missed the show. Worth a watch if you were a lost fan, and you can even sort of pretend S06 didn’t even happen (I mean, happen to you) and still enjoy this.
  • Lots of Scuttlebutt that Man of Steel 2 might involve Black Adam as the villain. I mean… I don’t buy it. But possible. Possible? Who knows.
  • The Justice League turn right. Because, justice.
  • Exciting news! Jurassic World 2 will feature an Apatosaurus wielding a cordless drill!
  • Part of me sort of didn’t need to see Frank Castle in the overt skull wearing that floppy hair, but hey.
  • How Josh Brolin rolled in and landed Cable I can’t even. This was the best…
  • Finally, Friday at 12:30pm the Last Jedi trailer will apparently be released. Brace yourselves. MEGA STAR DESTROYERS because bigger!

Six Seven Go To Hell or Go To Heaven – 21 Mar 2017

Let me tole you: if I didn’t have kids in the home, and DID have $899 laying around…
link!

Meanwhile:

– As much as I crave new Hans Zimmer soundtracks, this interview, reposted across various sites, warmed my heart a bit, because I share a devotion to the Nolan Batman films as well. It’s a very intimate and purposeful connection, the soundtrack developed for that trilogy and the material itself. Nolan and Zimmer work well together, thematically (witness Inception and Interstellar for examples outside of the superhero genre) and when Zimmer did the Man of Steel soundtrack, while it was excellent and distinct, it was lending some of that former world’s pedigree to the new films in a way I found disconnected. link!

– Sony wants to proceed with fast-tracking Venom, without a script or director… in the post-Marvel-deal era, what do YOU want from a Venom film? I can’t decide. I really don’t like the character outside of Spidey using the suit and then slowly going batty from the symbiote’s influence. Once it jumped to other hosts and became 90seriffic, I was out. I do like the black ops version from recent years in the comics, but I don’t see how it would translate. link!

– Similarly, WB / DC seem intent on keeping the Flash moving forward (heh) despite multiple issues with the pre-production. That’s not a good sign. link!

– RIP Bernie Wrightson. That escalated fast.
Not my artistic influence, and I didn’t read a lot of his stuff, but I always admired it from a technical level and enjoyed reading about his convention persona. link!

– We’re doomed. More. link! Mega-rich oligarches in powered armor!

Image
– random Kraken-related jewelry for the day. AMAZING.

-I’m trying not to read anything about GOG2 these days… but I can’t get enough on Yondu’s cyber mohawk. link!

Image
– Expanse has been greenlit for Season 3, so I can now relax.
link!

– Alicia Vikander may be joining a new Ben Wheatley project involving kicking nocturnal underground beastie ass. His current project looks insane and awesome, so let’s be optimistic.
link!

Image
– Becky Cloonan’s poster for Ghost in the Shell is EVERYTHING. link!

– Reddit is questionable for a lot of things. But the AMA (Ask Me Anything) series is not one of them. Here’s Gareth Edwards… link!

Image
Your random Mike Mignola block-rockin art used as a bossbot’s iphone screen for today.

– I’m generally not a fan of cosplayers photographed and then given a bunch of post FX. I like the craft of the costuming itself, and that’s as far as I go. However, this is really well done. link!

– Apparently Hela knows capoeira in the new Thor film. I appreciate it’s a gladiator road trip movie, but that’s quite a diversion from the comics. Then again, probably a welcome one. Stand around and glower megagod types are boring on film. link!

– Good news for this guy, having just finished Peaky Blinders S03… S04 is due to begin production, and Tom Hardy will return. link!

– So Fox’s X-Men show for broadcast TV? The one with a family on the run with a mutant child, which seems to have little to know recognizable X-anything in it except for Sentinels? Is it going to be called Mutants on the Run? MutantsSuxxxx? Mutant? Nope. GIFTED. Srsly. I was gifted. I had to do more homework. That is all. link!

Image
Here’s your random Black Adam speculative rendering for today, by Chris Diem. Love it. Great proof of concept…

– Henry Cavill is on board for MI: 6. That’s interesting! I hope he’s a villain. Not a team member who betrays them, but a proper villain. link!

– How strange the wheel is… Matt Vaughn gave the X-Men franchise a brief moment of hope, before getting forced out by Bryan Singer. Now, after doing his own thing (Kick Ass, Kingsmen) he’s back in the big studio system’s favor for supehero tentpoles, being supposedly courted for the next Superman film. If true, that’s something to be modestly optimistic about, similar to what happened with batman. link!

Here’s your random Bill S. pic of the day: Dr Doom!

OK, that’s all for now. Fear not and be just!

Come With Me If You Want to Save the Franchise – 170126

Image
So, what do you think? Tim Miller on Terminator? Any chance of bailing this ship out? We talk about this one on the podcast in February… link!

Meanwhile, this:

– Look, I gave up on Gotham a long time ago. It was never great, but at least had some atmospheric style. It went from soapy cheese to a garbage fire in record time. That said, I will give them this and only this: I’ve been pining for someone to do the Joker thing from the New 52 where his face has been cut off and then haphazardly sewn back on. It’s so unnervingly icky (and infected, presumably)… so, at least they tried it. link!

– From now on, as far as cosplay goes, I will accept NO LESS than a full scale ED-209. link!

– Thomas Jane in Predator? Before seeing Expanse I’d have been against it. Now… link!

– Neill Blomkamp is not encouraging. link!

– I’ve been using these as desktop screens of late: focus on the retro-future GUI in Rogue One: link!

– GIJoe + Transformers… would you have been in? I would not have been in. I would have been more out than I already am. link!

– So, uh, according to this, DC/WB will give the obscure antihero villain of their obscure supers film his OWN film… yet still can’t figure out how to make the DC pantheon work? link!

– I liked the admittedly uneven Amazon Tick pilot… interesting to imagine Warburton back in the costume, though. link!
