They’ll Use Your Bones for Tools – 31 October 2018

In honor of Halloween, here’s a link to the original War of the Worlds broadcast, not to be confused with the two later rebroadcasts within the next 15 years, or any War of the Worlds film or TV projects since. Though, because I am a defender of the movie, I’m using a Tom Cruise War of the Worlds header image because damn, they looked rad. And sounded radder. The rising of the inexplicably buried walker out of a New Jersey intersection is still one of my favorite filmed sequences in the modern era.

Meanwhile, within your treat pail, find these thus:

  • In a somewhat surprise reveal, the Game of Thrones prequel will include and likely feature Naomi Watts. Nice catch!
  • In an optimistic bit of rumor, apparently maybe supposedly Marvel is cooking up a Falcon/Bucky miniseries for the streaming service. That’s a hot one. Their dynamic in Winter Soldier was excellent. Now, allow me to opine: I may be just pushing my own wish fulfillment here, but I suspect Bucky will take the Cap mantle, and this show might be used to bridge or flesh out that transition. Meanwhile, Vision might have a major role in the Scarlett Witch series. I mean, he SHOULD. And meanwhile meanwhile, the rumored Hawkeye project might be a series and include Clint training Kate Bishop. If it followed the story beats and tonal style of the early comic issues, that would lead to one very welcome thing: live action PLESS PLESS!
  • In Mediocre Cosplay News, here’s more pics of the awkward Doom Patrol people with the awkward Titans people. How bad does this project need to be when the promo material is this amateur? I’m weirded out. And, related: here’s Henry Cavill’s costume/makeup tests for Witcher, in which he looks like he wore the black Superman suit we never got to see, but added a Halloween Store wig, and then tried to use the SMOLDER ability from Jumanji.
  • I can’t recall any project like this before: the PG-13 version of Deadpool 2 is to include not ONLY that surreal Princess Bride intro, but a sizable amount of different footage and story beats. It’s like multiversal and stuff.
  • I enjoyed reading this fan theory about Nick Fury knowing the future and setting things up based on Dr. Strange going back in time and warning him, though reading this rambling treatise (sort of an Emporer’s Shanghai Noodles of MCU theories) it’s easy to see how if they weren’t VERY careful we’d have another well-fucked time paradox problem.
  • I keep forgetting to post this youtube video on building Daredevil’s billyclubs… I think Lung found it initially… the thing is, it reminds me that on the show I feel like it’s always been standalone clubs, not connected by wire? Am I misremembering? Because I LOVE when they are connected. Though not when Jimmy Palmiotti draws it and the wire is 333′ of silly string. Editorial over.

Finally, I leave you with this: Bram Stoker’s original defacement of his library source material when writing Dracula. How awesome.

You Mess with the Gadot You Get The W Gang Signs – Robots Root 24 Mar 2018

Despite resolving as the lowest moneymaker in the DCEU lineup thus far, fan interest remains strong enough to put Justice League at the top of weekly DVD/Blu-Ray sales, which isn’t surprising: the film may not have had staying power in theaters, but it’s a no-brainer for comic and action movie fans to have at home. Also, this image above.

Meanwhile, in space:

  • Lord and Miller are getting an Executive Producer credit on Han Solo, which is actually a positive thing: easy to imagine them having no credit at all, given how much of the film was reshot. Meanwhile, Ryan Reynolds is getting a writing credit on Deadpool 2, which shows how much his personal sense of humor has helped shape the character’s success, I think.
  • These unfinished shots of the aborted Justice League film costumes are pretty interesting in that Fringe Universe sort of way. I don’t hate them as much as others on the supernet, that’s for sure. I certainly struggle with redesigns of major franchise characters, but the Superman look here reminds me of something hovering between Rance’s redesign and mine. Don’t pay any attention to this Batman design, though. It’s atrocious.
  • The new Deadpool 2 trailer is super fun. Cool to see the X-Force team in action. Plus, a bonus Skarsgard I had no idea was involved.
  • Doug Liman’s Youtube RED series Impulse is basically a redo of his Jumper film… and actually looks compelling, to be honest. And I didn’t hate Jumper.
  • Noah Hawley has hit it out of the park with Legion, so I’m inclined to be optimistic about his incredibly challenging Doctor Doom film challenge, which appears to be challenging.
  • Astro City has been optioned for a live-action TV series, or series of series, as the case may be. Astro City was an inspiration to me in my youth as far as worldbuilding goes, so I’m down with it.
  • Less than one month to go before Westworld S02, and the viral is viral.
  • Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth reuniting in the Men in Black remake? Is this fan casting?! Excellent.
  • Pretty stellar ode to the stache here
  • In keeping with tradition, WB have announced a production schedule for a DCEU film without having the script or casting resolved. Batman, 2019.
  • It’s awesome that Elizabeth Olsen called out Empire on the savage photomanip of her face in these covers.

Thats all for today… off to drag Thor’s head around as I hunt for Infinity Stones in my disassembled bathroom subfloor.

More Witch Required and other things – 28 June 2016

This Scarlet Witch concept art really hammers home how much I wish she had worn a headdress piece. In fact, I was holding out, throughout Civil Tole, for the proper comic one to appear, and it never did. WORST MOVIE EVER. Might as well have been BVS at that point.

This piece of concept art for Justice League is making the rounds… but not all is what it seems. I think, since we just had that big journalists set visit hullaballoo, people are getting swept up in all the descriptions of things and think this sort of graphic is new. It isn’t. This was released as part of the BVS Ultimate Toleyou Edition, and it’s a snapshot in time of ideas for the film design work. See above, Scarlet Witch… sometimes they make it more or less through to production. Most times, not. I consider this good spin on it, because these costumes bore me. Thanks for loaning Flash your weird electric-weight-loss hip belt thing and thanks Batman for tearing off a Kevlar armor codpiece component and shoving it onto Flash’s sternum. Thanks, Cyborg, for choosing your design in the middle of a Matrix marathon… guh…

I don’t even, on this Transformers: Combiner Wars series coming out.
1. It’s done in some sort of hybrid between South Park and animated comics animation.
2. It’s adult and dark as hell, precisely when they already have a good amount of dark stuff going on in their for-kids lineup.
3. “Myself vs. Megatron!” – one of my biggest pet peeves in grammar. From the Prime himself goddamnIOT.
4. Murder.

Well, Ansel Elgort has been cast in the in-development Dungeons & Dragons movie. You think people got exercised about about the BVS film in development?! There’s 99 ways of fucking this up, and precisely 1 way of doing it right, and that way is the work of Joel Rosenberg (I’ve said this before, I know) and his Guardians of the Flame series, about some role players sucked into the game, immediately slaughtered, raped, sold into slavery, and then fighting to ultimately end slavery in that world through modern techniques. It was nuts. Loved it.

Wake Me Up Before You Nyong’o – 13 May 2016

Image
Supposedly Lupita Nyong’o has been cast in the new Black Panther movie. The early reports suggest love interest, because of course they do, but I’d love to see her as another member of the Dora Milaje, which I assume we saw one of in Civil Tole.

In other news…

Carla Juri has been cast in another unspecified role in Blade Runner 2. I don’t know anything about her other than that she’s Swiss and striking. But more than that, I like that we have no indication of who anyone is playing. The less we know, the better, for as long as possible.

I really like Olivia Munn. Sure, a lot of it stems from personal aesthetic preference and too many Attack of the Show viewings. But I liked that she landed the Psylocke role, and enjoyed reading about all her training and seeing her IG feed videos of same. She stated in an interview published recently that she turned down (or turned down auditioning for) the role of Deadpool’s love interest, Vanessa . As we al know, that role went to Morena Baccarin, and she hit it out of the park. Now, I lamented on our Robot-Kraken podcast that I had wished for less damsel in distress in hooker gear and more active participation, in that role. However, there’s a case to be made that Vanessa was written as a survivor, rather than a victim, as noted here:
http://www.thewrap.com/why-deadpools-pr … han-he-is/
Sadly, early reports from viewers of X-Men: Apocatole indicate that Psylocke isn’t given as much to do as we thought, and that sucks, given that Munn clearly believed she had some THERE there in the X-Men script.

Crackle just landed the Macross series, from Harmony Gold, the single greatest animation influence on my childhood, and the gateway to Japanese anime for years thereafter. I’m looking forward to watching these with my kids… though I wonder if they’ll find Arc 2 befuddling and Arc 3 depressing, as i did.

Rumor has it Professor X will be in the New Mutants film. I’m beyond nauseated at the shoehorning of the original X-Men cast into all these other projects. But, I will admit, if one project needs Professor X, it’s New Mutants. That said, I still don’t understand the role of a New Mutants film when the X-movies set all the characters firmly in school. NM at the time was a return to that story setting, after a few years of Uncanny X-Men’s out-of-school adventures, returning to the sort of background the original X-Men endured: super high school.

I was quite disappointed to learn that Disney just sunsetted Infinity. My kids were too young to play, and we were holding out (at my lovely wife’s request)… but the collector/old miniature guy side of me couldn’t wait to go deep into debt buying $15 figures that unlocked characters and powers within a free roam game where you could design your own maps like LBP. DAMMIT.
It seemed like such a creative and innovative imagination playspace for kids…

1. Marco DelFonso has produced a number of fanarts featuring Deadpool and Harley Quinn, which make sense on a surface level I guess, both of them being goofy, irreverent, bloody anti-hero types in their current incarnations. It got me thinking though: setting aside how Margot Robbie’s version will land in Suicide Squad, imagining a Harley solo film… would Miller’s Deadpool technique work for this character. I’ve never been fond of her cutesy, lovestruck, swooning cartoon Jersey thing, but take that away, and have her unhinged, looney, playful and sadistic… given the right plot circumstance (you know plot, right? Missing from Deadpool but they squeaked by on that film) I think the 4th wall component could really be interesting. 3,333 quips launched like area-affect weapons, not so much. The challenge would be that she’s a female character. I feel like even today, audiences are harder on female solo films regardless of format or context, and I can see a backlash on Harley done this way, even if it had happened before DP.

4. Look, I’m not shy in saying it: I’m not overly into the MCU Scarlet Witch. I’ve liked Olsen in other roles, but I’m not yet warming to her here, and I think this is an example, a rare example, where there’s neither enough of the comic version, nor enough new redesign innovation, to pull me into this version of the character. I don’t think I need the kinky hair and gypsy stuff necessarily, but the design hasn’t felt fully baked yet. These images of her Cap3 costume aren’t yet winning me over. They read to me like those superhero costumes in TV series where they don’t want to fully commit, like what they used to do on shows like Smallville. Anyway, my eye sees a few changes that would make it more palatable. I think my problem here is matching the costume design to the actress for an overall effect. When I drew the AoU version last year, I was not drawing Olsen the actress, and frankly I liked the look of the design more in that instance. Looking at this refined version, I want changes, and maybe I’ll have time to sketch them out.

Speaking of, I haven’t really seen Cavill speaking his native accent since Henry VIII, so it’s kind of refreshing. He’s certainly more charming here than his stern Clark, his solemn eyebrow-cocked Superman, or his douchey Solo from UNCLE. Then again, that’s ACTING FOR YOU! And on the other hand, it’s challenging to a thespian to be told Batman can fly and has heat vision and they’d rather ride in a car than sit on your thigh in a helicopter or whatever.
