Make Mine McQuarrie: Robots Root 22 Dec 2017

This lovely fan film features the original Mcquarrie designs for Star Wars, and it’s glorious. I love it. I have some of these figures from a series that was released some years back.

Meanwhile, an accidentally delayed Robot’s Root! The scheduling module on the site failed… sorry for the radio silence…

  • Surprising precisely no one, Simon Stålenhag’s Electric State has been optioned, to be adapted/written by the crew from the Russos’ Cap films and helmed by the director of IT. This is all very good. I slavishly adore that book. I don’t even own it, thanks to a shipping mishap. But I will.
  • The new Hawk and Dove designs are OK I guess. Seem pretty consistent with the look of the earlier Robin designed that we saw. I’m nonplussed by the image distortion and filtering in this pic that makes Minka Kelly look like she has a hairy chin, but to be fair, I’m nonplussed by any iteration of a superhero Minka Kelly that covers up this much of her beautiful complexion. Too bad about that wig.
  • Donnie Yen’s Chasing the Dragon was already out when I was in Indonesia last month. It looked really good. I go back in January, and may catch it there, then. Because. Donnie Yen. Wide collars.
  • Of course, the news of the week was that the Disney yard sale collection of Fox’s film properties went through. ‘RAG AN’ BONNNNNE!’ “We can use em!” Sorry. Anyway, everyone’s fixated on X-Men and FF coming to the MCU, but hey, look at all the other properties… Family Guy? Simpsons? Serenity? And what about the fate of streaming services like Hulu, as Disney prepares their own streaming service… it’s an exciting and sobering time for fans and creators alike.
  • I don’t remember if I said it in the podcast, but I certainly have yelled it into abandoned alleys as I staggered around the city… they should have given reincarnated Superman a full beard. That would have solved everything.
  • Ronald D Moore, who revitalized BSG before famously having no plan to resolve the series after the writer’s strike, has been hired to do a space race series for Apple. He also looks different, but hey, so say we all.
  • Brubaker’s Kill or be Killed has been greenlit, to be helmed by the director of John Wick. That’s a good fit!
  • Punisher S02 is greenlit. That may have seemed like a foregone conclusion a year ago, but with all the controversy this year, it’s welcome news. I really enjoyed the bulk of the series.
  • Woody Harrelson has joined the Venom film production. In my book, that generally improves a thing.
  • Two new noir projects are in development by Guillermo del Toro’s production company, one of which being a carnival thriller. Stoked!
  • You’ve seen this by now, but this is the Harry Potter chapter written by predictive type. It’s amazing.
  • You may be able to hear my children squee from here.

I’ve Seen R Rated Material Glitter in the Dark Near the Tannhäuser Gate – Robots Root 11 august 2017

Best news of the day: Blade Runner 2049 has been given an R-Rating. I cannot be more pleased by ratings news related news about Blade Runner. As far as news goes. About ratings.

also…

Episode 035 of the Robot-Kraken Podcast is up: Thom and guest-host Blake ‘Ballista’ Simmons discuss Game of Toles S07 eps 03 and 04…while Kris attempts to evade dragonfire at home. Check it out on itunes, Stitcher, and here.

Meanwhile, Robot’s Root!

  • Avengers 4 has started production. Some say this will be Infinity War Part 2 despite their dodge about it being a two-part film… I hold out hope that it’s a variant on Secret Invasion. We shall see.
  • The word on the street, and by word on the street I mean news in my browser, is that No Man’s Sky is getting an update that offers story mode and some limited multiplayer. Maybe I’ll break the seal on my copy now. With all my free time. COPIOUS free time.
  • Three new characters from the Star Wars universe have been revealed, devoid of context, as part of a media release about a Captain Phasma novel. Marvel at them! Speculate! Be vaguely disappointed later!
  • What standard nerd among us wouldn’t want to fold in sounds from TRAPPIST-1 into their own music mixes? I used to capture source recording samples for electronic artists to use in their ambient works (or ambient chainsaw, as my lovely wife declares) but I never graduated to making my own.
  • Lemmy has been (further) immortalized.
  • I LOVE them Praetor guards in Last Jedi. There’s some really interesting design work going on here, beyond the obvious historical callbacks.
  • Tim Miller has signed on to direct Neuromancer, in 2032… or something… I mean, it’s a way off… probably doomed… but it COULD happen.
  • Jonathan Hickman was particularly candid about Marvel canceling Fantastic Four on the heels of their dispute with Fox over the film franchise butchery. I don’t blame him. He’s made a career out of some of the best modern FF stories ever, and I really loved what he was doing. But it’s kind of a peak into the sausage factory.
  • Kind of a cool bonus scene about Zune management.
  • Listen, I LOVED Jeff Bridges as Stane… but I’m glad they weren’t ambiguous about his bitter end.
  • Inhumans has inevitably become THE project to hate this year… read this regarding the garbage fire panel about the show. It’s highway crash level interesting.
  • The screen tests for RDJR’s early Tony Stark interpretations are, yes, insufferable, but also interesting in that this is how I feel the character would have presented if played by Tom Cruise, as once intended.

That’s all for today. Keep ordering those noodles and watch out for skinjobs!

My Parents Are Totally Evil – 24 August 2016

Image
For those of you playing at home, this was one of my favorite comics for a long time, and the original run still resonates with me. I’ve long argued it was tailor-made for adaptation. We’ll see if the Hulu series strikes the right chord. The nice thing about this series, setting aside the occasional integration of existing MCU characters, is that it doesn’t REQUIRE canon appaearances from known supers. It establishes a supervillain underworld and these kids fleeing from it. All new characters, freedom to create a unique tone… it would have worked for Netflix equally well. What it wants is that vision, that style that is consistent across episodes. Think House of Cards, Daredevil, even Preacher for the most part. I’m choosing to be optimistic because I can SEEEEE it. And interestingly enough, we JUST SO HAPPEN to have a long-gestating fantasy casting exercise on Robot-Kraken, about which Kris continues to struggle.

ITEM: This is the only one of the recent Empire covers I felt compelled to post, because while I have NOMINALLY tried to avoid reading about Rogue One any further, I get sucked in whenever the droid is involved.

ITEM: I LOVE interconnections in the continuity of shows. According to Cox, Claire’s cut over the eye in a S02 sequence is a reference to events in the upcoming Luke Cage season, which apparently occurred simultaneously in the timeline. YEE! And look, even if that’s only partly true, like they put little bon mots in here and there as story hooks for other, future content, I’m good with it, because it shows intent. I do that in my TRDL Universe stuff all the time. I plant seeds, and grow them later.

ITEM: I don’t like 90s comics, I don’t like black costume Superman, I don’t like long hair and mullets… and as I said yesterday, I don’t see the internal logic of any of that in the world DC/WB created for Justice League continuity. HOWEVER. This manip is successful, I’ll give it that. Why his facial hair lags behind his head hair, that’s a Kryptonian mystery.

ITEM: Scurred Parent Warnings for Sausage Party might be even better than the film itself.

ITEM: Oh, the FF film that could have been.

“In addition to Annihilus and the Negative Zone, we had Doctor Doom declaring war against the civilized world, the Mole Man unleashing a 60 foot genetically-engineered monster in downtown Manhattan, a commando raid on the Baxter Foundation, a Saving Private Ryan-style finale pitting our heroes against an army of Doombots in war-torn Latveria, and a post-credit teaser featuring Galactus and the Silver Surfer destroying an entire planet. We had monsters and aliens and Fantasticars and a cute spherical H.E.R.B.I.E. robot that was basically BB-8 two years before BB-8 ever existed. And if you think all of that sounds great…well, yeah, we did, too. The problem was, it would have also been massively, MASSIVELY expensive.”

ITEM: The Arrival full trailer gives you more than you want to know, but not enough to spoil the film. But hey, it’s early yet. I’m so stoked on this one. That ship design is EXCELLENT. People mock it, but I see what it really is.

ITEM: I wasn’t even going to comment on this Zendaya drama, but it just pissed me off too much. If a character is defined by their appearance, then they are shallow and garbage. This goes beyond the tropes of ‘just make them a new character’ that purists, if not outright racists/sexists/etc rely on… we even hit that angle talking about Lex Luthor in BVS. It’s clear that racism drives this whining. Disgusting, and I will have none of it.

Finally: Happy birthday to our own DEEPLY DAPPER, Kris, preparing for his next con appearance and trying to resist the urge to build Legos instead…

An Enjoyer of Life and other things – 8 June 2016

All hail weird-ass Jeff Goldblum being himself on film again!
“He’s a hedonist, a pleasure-seeker,” Goldblum explained to Empire, while promoting his upcoming film Independence Day: Resurgence, “an enjoyer of life and tastes and smells. I thought, ‘ can do that, I’ll bet!’ I’m working on my part every day.”
