Wings and Things – Robots Root 23 October 2018

The more I watch the new Daredevil season (which has been SO GOOD) the more I think about the recent cancellations in the Marvel Netflix series, and how much I want a Daughters of the Dragon series next. Hopefully the above image isn’t too spoilery for those who are still watching Iron Fist, because no one is watching Iron Fist, and nothing matters. HA

This! News from the Quantum Whatever!

  • I’m into the new Netflix series Bodyguard. I love the lead, from the Game of Thrones days of course, and I find the subject matter compelling: the protecting of a politician whom you ideologically oppose, and then being sucked into the intelligence part of it. Hope its good! Coming to a Robot-Kraken pod near you soon enough…
  • This piece on disguise theory in the intelligence community was great. I thought a lot about this sort of thing when working on Finit-e… the ways in which dialog and mannerism can betray a spy.
  • Joining lil’ Predator, here comes lil’ Slimer. Unreal how well this works!
  • A study of high-angles used purposefully in cinematography.
  • This isn’t much of a spoiler, if you have ready any Iron Man comics over the years, but here’s a spoilery Pepper Potts pic from Avengers 4 that I like very much. ENDORSED!
  • While all I want to hear now is a Daughters of the Dragon (above) and a Heroes for Hire and a post-Netflix Jessica Jones and Defenders… rumor has it Nick Fury is getting a series…
  • This is just one of many photos to come out of the WB Elseworlds crossover featuring Green Arrow and Flash switching costumed identities. Everyone is worked up about John Wesley Shipp back in the furry Flash suit from the 90s, but I just cant get over how bad Stephen Amell looks in the Flash suit. It’s not just that it’s not a roided up muscle-built uniform like all the others… it’s design and plating is expressly awkward. He looks ridiculous, in a suit that appears designed to be so. Because that guy is RIPPED, otherwise.
  • Wonder Woman 2 is delayed until 2020… so many possible reasons.
  • Finally, Guillermo Del Toro finally gets to make his Pinocchio… at Netflix. Watch for those eye-palms!

Thats all for tonight. Brought to you by the 33% Nation of Iron Fist Katanas.

Deep Fakes and Roguish Rakes – Robots Root 19 Oct 2018

Listen, I’ve been advocating for Han Solo loud and long, but I have to say, it’s surreal and delightful to see this deep fake amalgamation of a youngish Harrison Ford’s face onto this footage.

That said, somewhere in space, this may all be happening right NOW:

  • I wasn’t interested in the Kid Who Would be King until I realized Attack the Block’s Joe Cornish is directing it. So there might be some interesting there there.
  • This piece on nostalgic memory vs reality in comics is a good one: like the writer, I too favored Dakota North at the time, despite not really understanding why. Or rather, for specific reasons beyond the character and story. Because unlike the writer, i DID read the books and still have them, and I hated the art and the story. But I liked the use of a non-supers character in an unusual environment (spy + fashion) for a genre, and also, I really liked the haircut in the banner image. I used her a number of times in the Marvel RPG.
  • Speaking of Marvel, here’s your first live-action view of that new Spidey Suit. Plus parkour. No pressure, dude.
  • What are the chances the Joker film is trolling snoops with this 60’s Batman era Batmobile?
  • I really dig this new Daredevil S03 poster. I LOT. It’s evocative on a number of levels.
  • I only read a few paragraphs of this Prospect review, as I plan to see it with as open mind as possible (already accidentally spoiled something for myself within, dammit tole) but here you go.
  • I’m not a follower of the DC CW stuff, but points for including the black costume for Superman that we should have had in Batman V Superman.
  • Anti-zombie tips you can follow along with at home. I mean, I hope you don’t have to. But still, can’t hurt.
  • I’m not sure what is more news news here: that Flash is delayed, or that WB confirmed they are dumping Cavill and Affleck. I mean, it’s not really news. But still, I’m disappointed. I liked both of those guys.
  • Honest Thief is already an interesting premise (sort of an anti-Heat) but that it comes from the producer’s of the excellent Ozark… even better!

  • Here’s a pretty aesthetically pleasing Battle Angel- Alita poster. I’m into it.
  • Legit fourth wall action here, Sean Bean being the target in the Hitman 2 game.
  • A brief history of Mandalorian representation in canon… it’s all over the place.

That’s all for tonight. Dream of jetpacks and young rogues…

Doug Jones is a National Treasure – Robots Root 5 March 2018

Not that this was necessarily the BEST choice (I’ve long given up on what’s right or wrong in these award shows) but what an interesting and cool surprise that Shape of Water took Best Picture and Best Director! A bit of nerd broke through…

Meanwhile, this:

  • What a random poster. Photoshop is sometimes your friend! Sometimes… not. So much dodgy dirt flying around them. HA!
  • Cheetah miiiiiiiiiiight be played by… Kristin Wiig? She can do anything. But SHOULD she?
  • April 22 can’t come soon enough!
  • Prospect looks really cool and retro styled for a sci fi horror project or whatever it is.
  • Cloak and Dagger has a new trailer… looks better than I expected, though still not my bag, maybe.
  • Here’s a Spotify playlist James Gunn put together as shooting music for the first film. Very interesting choices.
  • Here’s some peak Cage, looks like…
  • Looks like Flash has directors signed on officially. That’s a good step forward. Or hyperstep. Something.
  • All this talk about Captain Marvel being an action comedy… my first blush was that they are trying to apply the GoG/Ant-Man/Ragnorok concept to projects that don’t want it… but then again, the emphasis on her being ‘a sassy smartass’ suggest to me more that they wrote her to give zero fucks, which is something I could get behind.
  • “Set during the Italian Shirt Shortage…” Honest Trailers honest trailers about. In an honest trailery way.
  • Good Cthulu, Maya Thurman-Hawke looks like Uma Thurman. Soon she’ll be looking like Uma Thurman in the scary 80s.
  • That one time Schwartzenegger insisted they are preparing to film T6. Oh, I mean, every time.

OK, thanks for reading, my 33% Nation of Fish Banging!

Kingsman is the Perfect Amount of Lunacy – Robots Root 8 August 2017

How are we supposed to wait two months. God. Damn. IOT.

We recorded a double-episode commentary for our Game of Toles series on Robot-Kraken last night, so expect to see that on itunes shortly!

Meanwhile, Robot’s Root!~

  • DEATH BY TRAY.
  • I sat through the whole thing despite my better judgement. This is one of those deals where I love that it exists, that this polar opposite of grim and gritty is so fully invested… but good lord.
  • In shocking news surprising precisely no one, Flash: Flashpoint of the Flashes or whatever will feature Wonder Woman and everyone else all at once. Because Marvel.
  • These comments about the ‘committee’ involved in story crunching prior to Fiege taking over with the MCU are interesting, not because of the fact that creators like Gunn had trouble with them, but rather because the committee in question was almost entirely the comics writing crew. I would have thought, years ago, that the questionable editorial in supers films would be exclusively from the suits, but that bringing in comics writers and creators would add the authenticity and some sort of continuity to the project. I mean, I know I thought so at the time. Now Gunn’s MCU stuff certainly is a standout, and he had some pretty clear freedom in the sequel, but interesting to imagine guys like Bendis being a PROBLEM in a script like this.
  • Kind of a big deal: Netflix just bought the rights to Millarworld… with Mark Millar involved in the development of content. I’ve been down for a Nemesis adaptation forever…
  • I actually thought these images of Cable from Deadpool 2 were more bosslogic manips… kind of surprised at the choices. Do love that arm. Speaking of, interesting that his stunt double seems to be manifesting the ‘Search for Hope storyline from the comics, which fits with that beater teddy bear on his belt. Hope in Deadpool 2? Sure why not.
  • I STILL cannot believe they brought Young Justice back. We have so many fan campaigns for such things, and I know the creators were pushing hard for the campaign… but wow. Very gratifying for fans.
  • Now look, I haven’t seen the Mummy yet, and I heard it was a hot mess but was hoping to find something entertaining up in there. But I can’t believe they would go to this much effort at trying to build a film franchise, trot out all the players they’ve assembled for the different films, to the press, and then now Mummy falls apart and the whole thing implodes
  • A film I’m watching with interest, Ad Astra, featuring Brad Pitt and Tommy Lee Jones in space, just added Ruth Negga in a mystery role. I’m stoked!
  • Don’t know if this is substantiated yet, but supposedly Daniel Craig elected to ease off of the wrist-slashing and agree to two more Bond films. Not one. Two. At like $100M salary per or whatever.
  • What’s this: Milla Jovovich in the Hellboy relaunch as the Blood Queen? Yes please.
  • Finally, good news for most X-Files fans: mythology episodes are out. I mean, I liked them. But I was in the minority. The SPACE minority.

That’s all for now. All of you reading this on Robot-Kraken, kindly BEND THE KNEE, thank you.

Blame it on SKRULLS! – Robots Root 25 July 2017

It’s gonna be raining SKRULLS IN PLAID soon enough, cousins! Onward… into Robot’s Root:

  • Lots of #SDCC material we haven’t talked about or did so piecemeal, so here:
    • Gifted trailer (fox) – not optimistic, though I do generally prefer Jamie Chung over no Jamie Chung. As much as I love references between films or between TV and film series that show connections in the story, it’s fraught with challenge and often doesn’t work (or goes in one direction only, awkwardly)… so I give them a little bit of credit for making Gifted it’s own continuity, and not sharing with Legion or the films. That said, it’s fraught with mainstream viewer confusion and seems like a matter of time before James Marsten or whomever will show up on one of these shows anyway… that’s a bad example I guess, being a recast victim.
    • New Defenders trailer, with slightly more cohesion. I’m 100% on board. Doubly so, now that they’ve announced a new showrunner for Iron Fist S-2. Granted it’s the guy who brought you the Elektra film, but still. Also, Misty Knight added, so there’s that.
    • Stranger Things S02 trailer completely owned my attention.
    • Talk about coming from behind, so to speak: Star Trek Discovery is looking sharp!
    • Westworld S02 trailer here, which I didn’t watch, because please please please blackout.
    • I saw Spidey with my man Lung the other night, and during the same tired Justice League trailer he turned to me, fueled by some tequila, to be fair, and announced the JL film was going to “kick ass”… I have been far less optimistic just from the monotony of the early trailer images of the dark mucky muck fighting environment and the blah generic dark mucky muck Parademons, and my personal grievance, the horribly written ‘You… me… the others…’ followed by WW asking again about ‘the others’… UGH UGH UUUUUUGH. That said, new trailer brings the hope back, doesn’t it? Plus, news of Flash now being a Flashpoint storyline is encouraging too. I love multiverse stuff. Speaking of, Steppenwolf in the new trailer says a few choice things: he mentions Lanterns… and he says THIS world will fall, like all the others. More multiverse business!

    • And the Alex Ross references are DOOOPE. Meanwhile, the buzz on the supernet is about how Henry Caville’s MI6 mustache is causing much digital post-editing of reshoot material on Whedon’s JL-fixery. Setting aside the fact that this sort of thing isn’t as uncommon as people seem to think, I was amused by a tweet by McQuarry, hard at work on MI6, that basically said that if they had to add a fake mustache to Cavill on MI6 it would need to be held on by staples. Funny, not just because it sidesteps that they could be adding it digitally just as easily (but shouldn’t as it’s their time and contract now, for Cavill, not JL) but because it’s a clever way of reminding people that the MI films are all action and will be fun and kinetic. Good move!
    • So Captain Marvel will be set in the 90s and feature the Skrulls. I’m really, REALLY, enthused about this. Different time period, use of my favorite Marvel alien race, just ripe for drama and betrayal, etc… all the interesting things we get design-wise by going early 90s… I mean, I’m thrilled. Now, how to shunt Carol to the modern era afterward? We aren’t going to be burying Brie Larson’s radiance in makeup… already did that, and understandably so, with Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter.  As for how Marvel is playing in the FF toolbox, remember, all sorts of things have been cooking behind the scenes between Disney Marvel and Sony Marvel and Fox Marvel… here’s concept art, which is quite reassuring, costume-wise.
    • Probably the most exciting material that has been officially released from the show (ie. not Infinity War mumble grumble) is the new Ragnarok trailer, which causes aneurysms of yeee. The idea that a lot of this film was improvised (and not in an IM1 way) despite Disney scrutiny makes me very happy. That’s what you hire Waititi for. I’m looking at YOU, Star Wars Disney.
  • I do like the cinematic Spidey suit a LOT. I’m much less enthused about what people are calling the Iron Spidey but is really just Limited Edition Gold Foil Variant Spidey from Infinity Wars. I wish we were getting the ‘Superior Spider-Man’ concept suit instead.
  • Here’s some generally underwhelming Ant-Man and Wasp poster art. I’m surprised. Meanwhile, Michelle Pfeiffer joins as Janet Van Dyne? Interesting pairing with Michael Douglas. Bring on the de-aging FX!
  • I’m really interested in Ed Piskor’s experimental X-Men project. First, his Hip-Hop Family Tree series was and is amazing. But beyond that, I guess I have a personal interest in the ‘grand summary’ concept of distilling a metric ton of continuity into a single story. I’ve loved mini-series or other projects that poke into different periods in ‘original continuity’ Marvel* and on a highly specific, and self-promoting note, it’s essentially what I’m doing with the TRDL Universe: there’s a huge amount of content in the timeline for this world, described in the sourcebooks… I could never illustrate it all… but I CAN illustrate snapshots in the timeline, weaving a common thread between them, which is what we have cooking. Anyway, I’m stoked on the project.

*I say ‘original continuity’ because all the callbacks seem to be written by writers like me who are my age and have been reading since I have, and are going back to the pre-retcon era of Marvel, ie. prior to the relaunches and rewrites and universe redefinitioning that Marvel succumbed to, the way DC had since the 80s… to me it’s everything from the 60s to the very early 90s, and then more or less into the early 2000s, after which Marvel continuity ate itself, orobouros style. Admittedly, we’ve played fast and loose with continuity from the golden age… but I mean, I don’t even know how time WORKS at Marvel anymore. Even beyond the multiversing and universe rewriting and dimensional folding and all this, and even beyond largely ignoring the lack of aging of many characters and the fix of truncating time so that events in the 60s happened ‘a few years ago’ in current continuity, etc I bristle when we see a retelling of early stories, set in continuity, where people are using cell phones and modern affectations… I get that it’s a paradox, that we can’t let the X-Men be birthed in the 60s while at the same time not have the original X-Men be in their late 60s/early 70s… but I guess for me, that’s what I WANT to see. Aged heroes, young next gen people picking up the costumes, etc. One of the most interesting things in Marvel continuity has been when Steve Rogers would lose the serum and be suddenly a senior (with abs)… and recently, with Old Man Logan shunted into main continuity, same deal. But comics are written, traditionally for tweens and teens in a three year looping window of attention span, and I get that. Anyway.

A Cherry Blossom Urban Moment and Other Things – 29 June 2017

I’m really chuffed about my current iOS background. This too can be yours.

Meanwhile, I present: Robot’s Root!

  • Wow, so, I’m not sure the better takeaway on this one: inspect undercarriage for ticks on the regular, or have a full size water tank on hand for red ant attacks. Either way.
  • I think i see some cues from the Iron man Bleeding Edge armor in these Infinity War drone snaps. All the LEDS! Love it.
  • Lucas’ museum has been approved to go forward in LA, which is generally good news, because i’m in LA all the time, and I want to get up IN there.
  • Bloody, practical FX, Hellboy… these are all on my X-mas list…
  • I’m not going to Game of Toles night at the Giants stadium, but the GOT intro sequence is still one of my favorites, so this was a treat. Thanks, Lung!
  • I think it’s WAYYYY too early to get excited about the new The Batman… but I will say that all this noir Hitchcockian referencing works for me.
  • I really want to see Lord and Miller rejoin the Flash film. Think about it: DC desperately wants to ‘lighten up’ the DCU. Lord and Miller were fired for, among many issues, an overly-comical, improvisational tone to the footage shot and the script deviations taken (raging Kasdan into rage) … and finally, these solo films from DC struggle under the weight of their own imagery and nostalgia… Ezra Miller’s Flash thus far has been witty… how interesting would it be if Lord and Miller SUCCEEDED and made a good film for DC?
  • I can’t even with all this Sony business. Kraven and Mysterio solo films? Really? And Carnage is the big bad of a Venom film? SO MANY TENDRILS.
  • Watchmen as an ongoing on HBO was all anyone wanted in the first place, though I’m no hater of the film by any stretch.
  • You like Legos? And Fuchikomas? HERE
  • I want to like Inhumans. Despite everything. The trailer launched… and it’s devoid of tension. I don’t even. At least Lockjaw has a tuning fork, albeit a surface branded one… the way I like things in general, I guess. Glowy tattoos FTW. More breakdown here.
  • On the other hand, the Jumanji trailer launched and I LOVED IT. ‘you don’t go in the water with a backpack everyone knows that.’
  • I’m surprised by my own self, liking what I’m seeing from the Netflix adaptation of Death Note. It’s all about Willem Defoe + Death God as he’s always looked. Wow.
  • Valerian is getting better early buzz than I anticipated. If nothing else, not surprisingly, it needs to be seen on the big screen…
  • Hey cool, noirish trippy Alan Moore project that he actually wrote for live action so maybe 3% chance he won’t distance himself from it with vitriol. Looks great! On Shudder.
  • Spidey’s early buzz is REALLY good, which is also promising… meanwhile, Tom Holland is apparently an unintentional enthusiastic leaker who hasn’t been given the Infinity War script out of caution. He supposedly got the OK to tell folks it’s Peter parker (retconned) into IM 2… I like that nod. The connection of Stark to Parker was important in the comics, and I think it’s a big part of how the new phase of Marvel movies goes… speaking of, THIS is finally available…
  • So for those of you who’ve seen WW, you know that cool moment where she meets Chief, and speaks with him in Blackhawk? Apparently he introduces himself as Napi, a trickster god, and it was in the script. Also the first time she actually shakes someone’s hand. Interesting! Apparently in canon.
  • You may have read this (quickly debunked) interpretation of the story of Andy’s father in Toy Story… Im not convinced it’s NOT true, given the circumstances. I actually REALLY like it. It’s chilling.
  • Also, this happened: my new spirit animal

Thus and therefore, I leave you to your e-musings.

Youre Gonna Get Some Hop Ons – Robots Root 17 May 2017

Of course the important news of the day, moreso than impeachable offenses and wonky missiles and health care class warfare and space aliens beached in Indonesia, but no less as inevitable as any of those: officially official confirmation of AD S05. I mean, we knew it was coming, but I’m glad it’s here. In bits and pieces, we’ve learned that Hurwitz is inspired by the election disaster, and that he’s returning to ensemble scenes instead of the ‘follow each character around’ standalones. But also, wow, 2018. I looked it up: the S04 experiment was 2013. I can’t believe it will have been five years.

Meanwhile, THIS HAPPENED:

  • In some strange alternate reality, Robert Zemeckis, Sam Raimi and Matt Vaughn are supposedly in the running for the brutally underdeveloped and problematic Flash film. Why and how is any of that possible.
  • Look. I want Star Trek: Discovery to succeed. I always want these projects to somehow work. And on the face of it, I like this photo. I like the actors, and I really like the old school tricorder in the holster. But really? ENOUGH REY FOR YOU??
  • And look, I have no problem with hyperbole in film promotion… especially when it’s a translation from another language… but this promo material for Last Jedi cracked me up. Everyone’s focusing on how ‘THE BIGGEST SHOCKING REVEAL IN THE HISTORY OF SHOCKING REVEALS EVER EVER WILL BE REVEALED!’ language, but what I thought was funny was the assertion that things got serious once they killed Han Solo. You know, because the deaths of millions in the hand-wavy blowing up of a solar system wasn’t a tragedy or anything.
  • Slaughterhouse Rulez… I mean I’d already be in just because of the pedigree, but I do like that premise. Shithead power schoolkids getting lovecrafted to death while being shitheads? Sounds great!
  • I’m amused by the reference that by the end of Defenders, it will feel like The Hangover… because I don’t know about you, but my drinking increased progressively as I worked through Iron Fist.
  • I wasn’t going to watch any more trailers for Battle for the Toleyou of the Preparation for the Planet of the Apes, but then I did anyway. Looks kick-ass, of course. I didn’t like Woody Harrelson as much in the earlier trailers, other than shaving in front of his troops, which is always a winning move… but here, I love him ranting that (presumably) Caesar is ‘too emotional’ hahahahaha
  • Best quote ever, regarding the sensational lawsuit over blind date texting during GOG2: ““While damages sought are modest, the principle is important as defendant’s behavior is a threat to civilized society,” the suit said.
  • Here’s the first promo material for the new Hellboy film, which features, uh, Hellboy Hellboying around… notable only because hey, it’s new Mike Mignola art, and we need that in this world.
  • For the ultra-rich cosplaying Iron Man fan in your life: dig this concept armor

That’s all for today. Back to mixing your sloshy martinis…

Six Seven Go To Hell or Go To Heaven – 21 Mar 2017

Tomenosuke PRO Blaster
Let me tole you: if I didn’t have kids in the home, and DID have $899 laying around…
link!

Meanwhile:

– As much as I crave new Hans Zimmer soundtracks, this interview, reposted across various sites, warmed my heart a bit, because I share a devotion to the Nolan Batman films as well. It’s a very intimate and purposeful connection, the soundtrack developed for that trilogy and the material itself. Nolan and Zimmer work well together, thematically (witness Inception and Interstellar for examples outside of the superhero genre) and when Zimmer did the Man of Steel soundtrack, while it was excellent and distinct, it was lending some of that former world’s pedigree to the new films in a way I found disconnected. link!

– Sony wants to proceed with fast-tracking Venom, without a script or director… in the post-Marvel-deal era, what do YOU want from a Venom film? I can’t decide. I really don’t like the character outside of Spidey using the suit and then slowly going batty from the symbiote’s influence. Once it jumped to other hosts and became 90seriffic, I was out. I do like the black ops version from recent years in the comics, but I don’t see how it would translate. link!

– Similarly, WB / DC seem intent on keeping the Flash moving forward (heh) despite multiple issues with the pre-production. That’s not a good sign. link!

– RIP Bernie Wrightson. That escalated fast.
Not my artistic influence, and I didn’t read a lot of his stuff, but I always admired it from a technical level and enjoyed reading about his convention persona. link!

– We’re doomed. More. link! Mega-rich oligarches in powered armor!

Image
– random Kraken-related jewelry for the day. AMAZING.

-I’m trying not to read anything about GOG2 these days… but I can’t get enough on Yondu’s cyber mohawk. link!

Image
– Expanse has been greenlit for Season 3, so I can now relax.
link!

– Alicia Vikander may be joining a new Ben Wheatley project involving kicking nocturnal underground beastie ass. His current project looks insane and awesome, so let’s be optimistic.
link!

Image
– Becky Cloonan’s poster for Ghost in the Shell is EVERYTHING. link!

– Reddit is questionable for a lot of things. But the AMA (Ask Me Anything) series is not one of them. Here’s Gareth Edwards… link!

Image
Your random Mike Mignola block-rockin art used as a bossbot’s iphone screen for today.

– I’m generally not a fan of cosplayers photographed and then given a bunch of post FX. I like the craft of the costuming itself, and that’s as far as I go. However, this is really well done. link!

– Apparently Hela knows capoeira in the new Thor film. I appreciate it’s a gladiator road trip movie, but that’s quite a diversion from the comics. Then again, probably a welcome one. Stand around and glower megagod types are boring on film. link!

– Good news for this guy, having just finished Peaky Blinders S03… S04 is due to begin production, and Tom Hardy will return. link!

– So Fox’s X-Men show for broadcast TV? The one with a family on the run with a mutant child, which seems to have little to know recognizable X-anything in it except for Sentinels? Is it going to be called Mutants on the Run? MutantsSuxxxx? Mutant? Nope. GIFTED. Srsly. I was gifted. I had to do more homework. That is all. link!

Image
Here’s your random Black Adam speculative rendering for today, by Chris Diem. Love it. Great proof of concept…

– Henry Cavill is on board for MI: 6. That’s interesting! I hope he’s a villain. Not a team member who betrays them, but a proper villain. link!

– How strange the wheel is… Matt Vaughn gave the X-Men franchise a brief moment of hope, before getting forced out by Bryan Singer. Now, after doing his own thing (Kick Ass, Kingsmen) he’s back in the big studio system’s favor for supehero tentpoles, being supposedly courted for the next Superman film. If true, that’s something to be modestly optimistic about, similar to what happened with batman. link!

Here’s your random Bill S. pic of the day: Dr Doom!

Wings in Space Again? – 21 Nov 2016

Image
So, I’m on another attempted Rogue One blackout, ignoring all the promos and bios and the novel etc etc but I did see this image, marketing a SW themed Nissan Rogue (well)… and spotted this interesting Imperial ship that looks like a TIE pod with swept Harrier style wings. This looks not to be the other TIE variants we’ve seen in promos or in the Force Awakens concept art book (from which they’ve cribbed some stuff, or rather they’ve worked from the same source material)…

ITEM: Emilia Clarke hasbeen cast in an unknown role in the Han Solo film. I like her, I plan to like this film. But it points directly to something I think will be very touchy: will this be a romantic lead, or a companion/ rival/ adversary/ opponent? Because when you do a backstory of a character largely defined by their romantic entanglement, bringing in ANOTHER love interest i what constitutes a retcon flashback can misfire. Indiana Jones was established as a serial dater in that each movie had a different love interest, until it didn’t, just as an example. Here, we have four films overall where he is only attached to one love interest. Anyway, who’s to say. I personally hope she isn’t a romantic anything.
