Thats Just Lazy Writing – Robots Root 9 Feb 2018

Deadpool 2’s new trailer is pretty much spot on what you’d expect, and it works perfectly. Favorite detail: Chunk’s shirt from Goonies! I love it.

  • In Movies that Aren’t Black Widow News: Milla Jovovich has replaced Olivia Munn in Hummingbird. I think she’ll do a fine job but I was looking forward to Munn, who, for all the other obvious reasons i’d be on board about it, hasn’t had a series role like this to date and I was interested in seeing how she’d work.
  • The magical world of what Netflix buys and for what reason continues to intrigue me: for three different reports I’ve read, it appears Abrams and crew new the whole ‘slap Cloverfield references on a sci fi film’ experiment was collapsing, so they sold the project to Netflix for $50M, putting them in the green, as it exceeded their production budget and more importantly allowed them to sidestep the quagmire of marketing costs. Netflix paid a huge sum (though half of the total for Bright) even though they fully understood what they were getting. To say they bought it for post-Super Bowl buzz alone seems almost cynical to write, but that’s the space Netflix is operating in, with the original content streaming wars. We used to ooh and ahh and tssk  the outrageous prices for Super Bowl ad time, but that’s an incredible sum just to convince the 5 remaining non-Netflix subscribers to join, and the remaining 99.9999999% of the civilized world to stay on the service. Which is not to say I won’t watch the film (I will) and BTW, Robot-Kraken Podcast guest host Blake ‘Begin Again’ Simmons implored me to watch Bright, saying it was actually pretty good. SO! More on both projects in next month’s show, I’m guessing.
  • Drunk History features Nichelle Nichols which is pretty awesome. I’d watch it but something in it tripped the sensors in my current host country, so it’ll have to wait.
  • The most reassuring thing about the details on Harrison Ford’s advisory role on Han Solo is reading that he basically just bullshitted about his experience and what Lucas was always talking about, and then just said, go nuts! Paycheck for light aircraft repair bills… but also, no pushing about the impression or some big speech about looking like a young Harrison Ford, just insights into how Ford felt Solo ticked. Pretty great, actually.
  • Apparently the Venom trailer will be released while I’m flying across the Pacific. Either I’ll land to accolades or scorn. About the trailer, not my arrival. Everyone’s excited.
  • Jessica Jones S02 is imminent, and the full trailer looks great. Tone is consistent, actors remain solid… PLUS the addition of Expanse’s Terry Chen (Prax Meng) in a very different role than we last saw for him. That’s AWESOME.
  • So, not sure, but Titan looks like it might be B-Movie material. However it ALSO reads as a video summary of my entire TRDL Universe situation, more or less, so. There’s that! Accidental marketing.
  • I’m sure you’ve seen this by now, but this fan-made alternate opening for Force Awakens is pretty rad. Not for what it was intended, because the mystery and interest in the setting of Jakku was perfect as-is and didn’t need explaining. But rather, just to see them tow a Star Destroyer carcass to a jumk planet and then dump it. The movie made it feel, without explanations, like it crashed there from an aerial battle… never thought of it as wreckage being cleared from dangerous hyperspace traffic areas or what have you. Star Wars has always played loose with the idea of space junk. It’s only there when serving the plot.
  • Delos Destinations viral is making me HOT HOT HOT!
  • This whole exchange on ‘the mutant cure’ is hilarious.
  • An articulated, jet boot sorta havin, repulsor sorta usin, ultra rad Iron Man cosplay… but doods IT CHARGES HIS IPHONE TOO.

Finally, I leave you with this: yawning is contagious.

Haileys and Bumblebees – Robots Root 3 Jan 2018

The only three things I can find to be positive about Bumblebee: The Damn Movie are, in no particular order:

  1. No Michael Bay
  2. Bumblebee is a Bug FFS
  3. Hailey Steinfeld

Maybe that WAS the right order.

Robot’s Root!

  • This comparison between Force Awakens and the Knights of the Old Republic storyline was pretty good. Had I any knowledge of the latter, maybe I would have detected some of this. Or not.
  • Every time Neil Blomkamp posts concept art from his axe-murdered Alien 5 treatment, I get frustrated.
  • I know this isn’t the most popular opinion, but I for one would want to see those extra hours of Blade Runner 2049… speaking of which, Ridley Scott’s elder man ego is spinning out… these comments are nuts.
  • This quote from Guillermo del Toro was amusing mostly because he criticized the design. I feel him.
  • Rian Johnson is supposedly set to begin filming scenes for the new trilogy in 2018… without a script, or even a stated concept… so at most, I hope it’s establishing shot set pieces… I mean, a road is nice. I like roads.
  • The most obvious conclusion reached from the linkbait comments that ‘Thor will undergo a dramatic transformation in Infinity Tole’ is a loss of an arm, as per the comics some years back… I’d like to see Thanos rip a Thor arm off…
  • new octopus alert. ALERT!
  • Hailey Steinfeld wants to be Joss Whedon’s Batgirl, if these misleading interview comments are to be believed. I would not mind. She’s fit, athletic, has a great expressive face, and has been acting since she was a wee one (remember True Grit? Long before the pop singer phase)… I had a different fantasy casting for this role, but maybe we’ll get to that sometime in 2018 on the podcast if a couple of other rubes get their shit together…
  • On the heels of the failed Dark Universe, Paramount is hurtling forward with the Hasbroverse, announcing dates for GI Joe, Micronauts and others… despite not having scripts or a plan. Sounds about right. Dungeons and Dragons AGAIN. Guh.
  • Here’s an interview with Neal Scanlan about creature work on TLJ… if you are into that sort of thing, which I am…
  • I still can’t even with this fever dream. It might be great. Mortal Engines…
  • I have an intense need to clean up and sort this mess… while eating THIS, of course.
  • Lung and I traded finds in this vein… this was my favorite of the Star Wars ones. Still looking for the perfect Deckard one.
  • Mark L Smith has been tasked as writer for Tarantino’s Star Trek film… I mean… someone rubbed a lamp somewhere right?
  • I enjoy radical fan theories where the main character is dead. Works with almost any movie.
  • Would Darkseid have helped or hurt Justice League? I think, as Kevin Smith described it, it would have made an effective tether for the next film.
  • Great honest trailer about Return of the Toleyou… except for the grating mispronunciation of Maori…
  • The new Annihilation trailer is already showing too much. I’m on blackout. But I can’t wait.
  • They do look pretty New Mutanty… love the Lockheed puppet…
  • Cloverfield 3 comes out in April… but with no name yet and no promos. Which is fine. They played it fast and loose with the last “sequel”… I’m still on board, ESPECIALLY if it is indeed space based as rumored. The cast alone!
  • True Detective S03 is shaping up to be pretty exciting to this guy: three time periods, the Ozarks, now Dorff joins Ali? Damn

That’s all for today. Back to cooking them Porgs…

If there’s one area that is particularly gray when it comes to the divide between the MCU and the MCTVU, it’s continuity. We’ve talked about how the shows reference the films, making them enjoyable and feel part of the global MCU picture, but the films never reference the shows directly for several reasons (though Feige has been atypically cagey about, so to speak, Defenders being involved in the upcoming Avengers films) … sometimes events overlap and contradict (I suppose the biggest example is Coulson dying in Avengers and being resuscitated with Kree shit in SHIELD; it isn’t a direct conflict because Coulson hasn’t been referenced in the MCU since, but anyway) but this was an odd one, where Feige talked about the plans for Inhumans now that they were bumped from the immediate film planning schedule… and talked about a TV appearance. We’ve had Inhumans in SHIELD for two seasons now. I think he meant the Inhuman Royal Family.

I Will Not Kill You – 11 Aug 2016

Image
Well, I’ve been waiting all day for this one. No disappointments, other than that they should have never revealed Vader, period. But hot damn.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frdj1zb9sMY

Image
Watch carefully for this scene!

Meanwhile, somewhere in space, this is happening:

Image
ITEM: Brad Kremer just released a digital animated homage to the opening sequence in Akira, and it burns, IT BURNS. With white hot rage that i cannot see a digital or live action version of this film that is this faithful to the imagery and tone that made the original OAV so good.

“This project started many years ago when both Dean and I lived on Tybee Island. I came to Dean with the idea to do a tribute “trailer” to Akira. As a long time fan of the original film he of course loved the idea! As we brainstormed the story that we wanted to explore from the film we settled on focusing primarily on the bike. The Akira bike is one of those iconic symbols that still remains relevant today similar to the Millennium Falcon or Marty McFly’s beat up DeLorean.
Since that first day when Dean and I began this journey we have both moved a number of times. But we always kept the project alive with a lot of late nights (mostly from Dean), re-edits and re-renders, and a lot of discussions about how to improve it. And so, after countless hours of modeling and rendering we are ready to share with you this short tribute to the masterpiece that Katsuhiro Otomo created and shared with us so many years ago. We hope you enjoy!”

ITEM: Die Antwoord have taken to IG to accuse David Ayers and his design team of apeing their steez. I think it’s mostly a stretch. But three watches, hey!
http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-enter … ebook-post

:::

Image
ITEM: Meanwhile, Ayers describes SS as an ‘anarchic punk rock art film’ and states it was never envisioned as an R-rated film, which we know. I can’t help but think he is protesting long and hard that there wasn’t a hellstorm of studio interference after BVS in the editing room, but I also think he’s been savvy ie. anti Trank, and resisting the defensive urge to bite the studio hands that fed him. Which actually isn’t very punk rock… but look, I think when they sign on to these big tentpoles they go in knowing the final product will be a mutation beyond their original vision, and some directors, like Ayers, takes it as part of the game, and considers it behind the curtain business not to be vented about, and others are less prepared, and complain. And I say all this, prior to writing or recording my review of the film, as someone who saw many flaws, or particularly missed opportunities, and especially noticed signs of heavy editing… but still REALLY had fun, so haters gon’ hate, and I appreciate Ayers for standing up for the commercial product he created. Additionally, I like his connections between choice and addiction, though it wasn’t as apparent in the film. PS, he indicated Joker killed Robin, not Harley.
http://geektyrant.com/news/david-ayer-d … -art-movie

Also, also, laughably these dudes are trying to sue because of not enough Joker, etc. I love it. Good luck, kids. It is QUITE apparent they cut a lot of Joker out of it, and not just from Leto’s running commentary, either. The trailer material alone, the narrative… and in fact, as an aside I’ll talk more about later, I LIKE that what they DID leave in paints the Joker/Harley romance as a love affair rather than a perpetual mindfuck of domestic violence.

Have a Bat Snickers and other things 15 July 2016

Good cosplay can help realize how comic costumes might look on film in future projects… it can also help confirm when costumes need changing. This is a great version of Ms. Marvel’s frequent look from back in the day, and I’ve seen other good ones at cons… and it definitely shows that the design needs to change if she’s going to be active and taken seriously. Much like they tried to clean up Psylocke’s look while making it vaguely familiar from the comics.

Hail Who are We Kidding – 27 May 2016

Marvel’s getting flack for this obviously untrue stunt reveal that Cap has always been a HYDRA agent… I think it’s some sort of pushback on how DC hasn’t gotten a break over the last few years in terms of comics storytelling reputation (despite several good writers on several good books) but anyway.

Image

You all know my penchant by know of sorting bricks by color and in separate compartments. The REAL deal is sorting out the joints. The connectimagoos that allow for the setting out of limbs and turrets and necks and such. Everything that allows you to break the cartesian coordinate grid XYZ. That’s my ongoing mission: pulling those parts just as I’ve pulled all the speciality bits I use for antennae and hoses and weirdness.

THE CORRECT NUMBER OF IRON MANS IS N+1 – 160511

Image
I’m no particular fan of how they basically burned off all of those rad armors in IM3… so, hang on real quick while I build a highly custom and elaborate LEGO IM VAULT. DAMN!

Just don’t deep dive into his Flickr gallery of rule34 lego business…

In other news…

Image
Netflix has a new Voltron series coming out in June which is great for a number of reasons: the original series isn’t readily available, and the remake they came out with in the late aughts is painfully bad, so I have to listen to that dreck some evenings, shortening my lifespan. This one also is animated by the team that brought… well, many other popular modern anime to us… and one lion (the bigger guy goes with the bigger character OF COURSE) is voiced by TRDL fave Tyler Labine. So, awesome!

The latest rumors on Justice League et al:

Image
– Steppenwolf will be the big bad of Justice League, and this is the demon dude seein in that Communion deleted scene from B v S that I hoped was actually Darkseid because rad, doesn’t look like a stonefaced uncle from Jersey. But anyway, being a Marvel guy I didn’t know who Steppenwolf was, looked it up, and it’s either a Kirby character from the 70s who led the planetary military of Apokolips and survived a Doomsday encounter; OR, it’s the living embodiment of a 20’s German novel; OR, it’s the singular embodiment of an old progrock band that plagued me in my early childhood. You decide.
http://birthmoviesdeath.com/2016/05/11/ … ice-league

– Affleck is now rumored to be really upset and humiliated after going out on a limb in the press work up for BvS about his performance jokingly being ‘better than Daredevil’ and yet, BvS scores (unfairly) lower on Rotten Tomatoes, which everyone brings up to him now in his driveway; He’s also rumored to have received an Executive producer credit on Justice League, which can often mean HE SHOWED UP, but could also (hopefully) mean WB is leveraging him into a position to take the reins from Snyder at some point.

In a pretty nice meta continuation of the meta continuation of the meta Deadpool film, Ryan Reynolds co-hosts the Honest Trailer for Deadpool as Deadpool being Deadpool.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qIRtFE6aIc

Image
He also features in a pretty awesome ad for the blue-ray release of the film, patterned off of a Viagra ad.

And in both, he mocks the concept people would buy physical media of the film. Ohai Lung.

Image
Boba Fett either was or wasn’t supposed to be the big bad in Return of the Jedi, or was both, depending on who you were talking to and when. But I wish he was more of something, and I hope he will be again.
https://www.inverse.com/article/15123-g … -fett-reve

But, then again, the additional bonus rumor:

Image
Tom Hardy as Boba Fett in SWVIII? I mean, I don’t know, why would he do that. I’ all for it, but…

:::

Image
I’m no fan of Power Rangers. Not even giving them IRON MAN SUITS makes me so.

Now look, I haven’t watched Supergirl. I tentatively figured I was not the target market, after struggling through a few teen-oriented-batman-clone Arrow episodes. But I’m half way through S01 of Flash (on the costume, the charm of the lead, Tom Cavanaugh’s menacing undertones, and whatsername’s fashionable science heels) so who knows… maybe I can stomach enough of this style of (understandably) teen-oriented DC fare… Supergirl LOOKs good… however, according to this, it may move to the CW and get a slashed budget. Apparently it’s higher production values have been a thing, that could not be… less of a thing….

According to Hammil, that rumored intro for SWVII with the hand and lightsaber dropping to Endor or wherever was supposed to be in the film, but was edited out. I liked the idea of it.

Similarly, lots of scuttlebutt about why he’s using a standard raw cyberhand again rather than the synthetic skin…

Amounting to nothing, really, but still.

This started filming…

Image
And THIS is the most excellent casting for young Solo that actually gives me hope on this otherwise questionable film…Alden Ehrenreich!

That’s all for today… return to your cells!

I REBEL and other things 8 April 2016

Image
Look, we’ve covered this in three posts plus talked about it like 33 hours worth (and not even on Robot-Kraken podcast yet) so I’ll just leave this here as a reminder that it’s only been two days or so since the trailer was released, and I already am having fever dreams about it.
Here’s a good analysis from the usual suspect:

In other news…

Image
This Behind The Scenes/ Easter Eggs/Development video by my man Mr Sunday Movies was pretty good. His Easter Egg video for the film was pretty comprehensive as well. In this one, I was struck by how, on the one hand, concept Doomsday was more interesting proportions (I love drawing beasties with hunch musclebacks and long arms) but on the other, STILL MUTED BROWN. Imagine had they given him a striking blue or green look? I’m so tired of drab designs for major characters.

Cloak and Dagger was one of the projects that a poorly realized April Fool’s announcement someone made had been supposedly greenlit (along with She-Hulk and several others)… however, a few days later it was officially announced as a real series deal for the formerly ABS Family channel, Freeform. I doubt the two were related, but it sucked for the project announcement because I ignored it for days, assuming it was fake.

So, it’s going to be hard to beat Doctor Strange buying Doctor Strange while dressed as Doctor Strange… GREAT MARKETING.

This was a great pic from vintageeveryday.com, which I check out, well, every day. Anyway, girls don’t read comics uguise. Except for where they do. And in 1947 even.

Just… look, Game of Thrones is about to start again. DYING CANT WAIT GAHHHH.
April 24th…

The Honest Trailer for Force Awakens was good. The trope about it being a clone (so to speak) of New Hope, thats kind of tired, but the rest of it was fun. “Han Solong”… and my favorite, above, Rey’s so poor she has to make her own action figures.

I had this whole elaborate rambling conversation with an interfriend about great female superhero film characters, who our favorites were, etc and the friend was positing that Gadot as WW was the best we’ve had yet. I still argue that Hayley Atwell’s Agent Carter takes it. She’s amazing.

Image
Her ROYAL THIGHNESS indeed.

Seriously, though, between Atwell’s acting, her character’s dialog and story arc, and the thematic material, she owns it.

:::

Image
Unrelated, this cracked me up.

:::

Image
Unrelated, Kingsman 2 is pushing hard on a supposed return of Colin Firth’s character. I suppose if he didn’t need a brain… or an eye… spoiler alert I guess.
http://nerdreactor.com/2016/04/07/new-k … lin-firth/

Image
Meanwhile, Pedro Pascal has joined the film as Jack Daniels. That takes me back to Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man (WTF WAS THAT EVEN)

This, BTW, was my birthday gift from my lovely wife. Amazing, is it not.

This lifesize AT-ST recreation is desirable. I’d use a retractable ladder I think. Side note, I heard a great reference the other day: why do we call them ‘at-ats’ but not these being ‘at-stttttts’

I don’t even get all these random not in continuity projects Marvel’s been doing, around Gwen Stacy. I liked the look of Spider-Gwen, and I wasn’t surprised they’d bring her into the new continuity… but Gwenpool is killing me here. Sells well, or so I read…
http://geektyrant.com/news/marvel-comic … gwenpool-1

To be fair, I only posted because I LOVE the MODOK plushie, there.

:::

Image
A bunch of posters were released for X-Men Apocatole… and then a bunch more. The four horsemen ones were the best, and this was the best of those. Yet, while I’m sure I’ll enjoy this film, it bodes ill that I’m not even motivated to research when it’s coming out…

:::

Image
Meanwhile, I’m ALL ABOUT CIVIL TOLE. I don’t want any more new trailers or reveals. Just get this month over with already.

:::

Image
This Batman fanart, which I’ve lost the reference to, really struck me because the way the arms and cape wings are structured much like a real bat. I love it.

Finally, the new Wonder Woman has courted controversy because gosh, how DARE they show what happens on an island without males… I mean, 2016, and this is still a problem for people. Le sigh.
