A Cape Story – Robot’s Root 7 Feb 2018

The full trailer for Solo is looking really good. I was talking to Lung about this: I really hope they discouraged the actors from trying to do impressions of the older actors we know so well, and just focused on the character and, at most, mannerisms. The picture perfect Ewan McGregor Obi Wan didn’t do our expectations any justice. I really want this film to be more about mining a new story and less about mimicry. I’m super in.

  • Jumanji 2 is happening. And spoiler alert for an upcoming episode of Robot-Kraken: that’s a GOOD thing.
  • Here’s a first look at Rukia from the live-action Bleach film. Which reminds me, here’s a super sweet art print you might like:

OK it’s my last night in Indonesia, so I’s signing off to do more work. See you on the other side!

The Sun is Getting Low in the Sky Big Guy HEY WAIT – Robots Root 10 Jan 2018

Robot’s Root for 10 January 2018 – a roundup of stuff and things that may or may not be happening…

  • Adding Matt the Radar Tech into SW: Battlefront II is the best anything ever for today. I’m sold.
  • Apparently, if you want to avoid some legal difficulty, owning firearms with the Punisher logo on them is a bad idea. Especially pink ones… I guess. What about swords? What are the rules on Punisher logos?
  • Black Lightning isn’t a character I’m overly familiar with, but the fact that the live action show has been launched is a good thing, I think. Now, Thunder, his daughter, has a design element I really appreciate: a TRDL design style high collar! Ha! Stoked.
  • More trailer action for the new Black Widow film, Red Sparrow… WAIT. The poster, up top, I quite like, with the focus on the eye.
  • DeWanda Wise has joined the stellar cast of Captain Marvel. No word on the character, though wouldn’t it be interesting if there’s a Binary component to this script? Anyway, she’s rad as hell, so that’s a thing.
  • How is it that the Workaholics guys can just make whatever film they want at this point? It’s like a tighter band version of the Rogen gang.
  • Listen, I had high hopes for Robin Hood… but it’s starting to give me a Ladyhawke vibe. I mean, I had low hopes. But now I have lower hopes.
  • EVERYTHING about this film.
  • Gifted, which I have not started, has been granted a second season… and has lost the Singer factor, obviously. As has Legion.
  • Ever wanted to play a Bugbear? Now you can.
  • Love Game of Thrones and frostbite? GOOD NEWS.
  • Runaways has been renewed for S02 on Hulu, despite not having finished S01. I feel like it fell apart towards the back half, but it’s still serviceable. Not that this can be said for that abysmal looking Inhumans series. Guh.
  • Here’s a great interview with Mike Mignola on an array of subjects.
  • Collider claims Tim Miller is developing a Kitty Pryde film. I’m OK with it. Supposedly Drew Goddard’s X-Force film is scheduled to begin production soon as well.
  • Han Solo mayyyyyyy have just gone back in for 3 more weeks of reshoots… pretty late in the game. Ron Howard knows what he’s doing, so no panic. Other than the general anxiety about this film existing in the first place, I guess…
  • This one took me by surprise: Derrickson of Doctor Strange may be cooking a live-action adaptation of one of my favorite cyberpunk books of the 80s, Effinger’s ‘When Gravity Fails’, which is set in a futureshock Middle East. INTERESTING.
  • who doesn’t love fake amusement parks?
  • Mantic is preparing a Hellboy tabletop game! Stay tuned for Deeplydapper’s slavish review of said game in a year…
  • Finally, The Tick is returning, meaning I need to catch up in a hurry…

That’s it for today! Kris and I are both smashing atoms to get ready for Heroes and Villains Fanfest/ Walker Stalker Con this weekend in Portland. Come see us at tables 201-202 if you attend!

So Many Hubcaps – Robots Root 30 August 2017

Mondo is once again killing it. KILLING IT like fantasy San Francisco kills hubcaps, and the consistent quantity thereof…

Thus, it’s Robot’s Root!

  • Someone helpfully ran George RR Martin’s work through a neural network, and wrote Winds of Winter for him. It’s A M A Z I N G.
  • Blade of the Immortal excites me. Greatly.
  • Terry Pratchett requested that his unpublished work be destroyed upon his demise. Boy was it.
  • This title cracked me up, and click through and see that they are in fact 100% correct.
  • We haven’t recorded any commentary about Defenders for the podcast just yet, but it shouldn’t be a spoiler for you to see this photo of Misty Knight going forward. I’m pleased with the design resolution.
  • Simon Kinberg “doesn’t want Dark Phoenix to be too intergalactic” according to Total Film… which may or may not be true, but sounds right. Superfans are outraged, but where has Fox shown they could handle a spontaneously revealed sprawling space story? Just because James Gunn pulled it off doesn’t mean we would suddenly have anything that would make ANY sense in the context of the X-Men films…
  • New dark-look Luke looks rad. Buckles and straps have buckles and straps!
  • Supposedly SS2 is delayed until; a production date at least 2 years out, due to ‘schedule conflicts with Will Smith’ which is probably code for ‘we don’t know what we’re doing’ since WB/DC have been looking at multiple concepts for films in this corner of their semi-universe, some believe as a means to have these ideas leaked and see what fan response would be to them and letting the people sort it out.
  • Normally I sort of breeze through these listicles, but there were a few items in this one about Terminator films that interested me. Notably that Arnie gained weight and muscle to return to the exact dims, in T3, as he had 12 years earlier in T2; and that Loken, again in T3, had to lose weight for her role as the weird black metal Terminator NXTVCBDG or whatever it was.
  • Reading up on the post-GoT interwebs in all their sobbery, I was reminded of Dragonlance from my youth… and possibly yours.
  • I’m kind of interested in Johnny Depp’s produced adaptation of The Secret World. It doesn’t hurt that the key art looks like TRDL costuming a little bit.

Thats’ all for today. practice your trick muscle-car management until next time…

Polishing or Cracking the Firmament – Robots Root 29 August 2017

Blade Runner Sequel Prequels? Well, my blackout on the film collapsed last week, so now I’m watching these things with wonton abandon. This mini-film explores Niander Wallace. I am 333% on board and I don’t think Leto has ever been better. EVER.

Thus, Robot’s Root!

  • I never really watched much from the days of the original Strongbad… he mostly amused me in mini clips on Adult Swim and of course we referenced him for awhile on the old TRDL R3 Forum… here, randomly, are art lessons… by Strongbad… I think my favorite details are his invented expressions for linework. In the toilet paper drawing exercise, it’s all ‘curl-em-ups’ and ‘side takes’…
  • Even though I like everyone involved, I just assumed this would be a low-budget straight-to-cable kind of thing. Looks great actually.
  • I’m fascinated by skeuomorphism… but seeing these images of software-interfaces for sound MIDI equipment is killing me. It’s like a double negative of unpleasantness and complication. Pretty great.
  • Interesting concept art from Close Encounters, for a new coffee table book coming out. Interesting how the ship was examined upside-down…
  • I just like the single panel with the train car.
  • Inhumans increasingly looks like the project everyone involved will wish would quietly go away. I can’t fathom the missteps here. That said, let’s give them something: yes the hair in action looks a bit better than expected. Don’t get used to it though. They’ll be shaving her head soon enough in the season.
  • First shot of the completed Wasp costume, with Evangeline Lilly therein. Not bad!
  • This was kind of inspiring yesterday: Ed Skrein walked away from the Hellboy reboot because he had been cast as a character that was Asian in the comic. I’m not sure this was necessary but I liked that it happened.
  • I cannot wait. Hurry up, younglings. Lego Robotics await.
  • Etta Candy focused epilogue will be coming with the WW Blu-Ray… I’m all for that.  Here’s a clip.
  • Here’s a second teaser for Punisher, featuring supporting characters and a hopefully cool theme for the show. I like the urgency of the music a lot. At least he’s not doing sledgehammer art this time. Very therapeutic I know.

Thats all for now. We will be recording our thought on the Game of Toles finale later this week, then my man One Lung and I will be at San Francisco Comic Con this weekend in Artists Alley. Hope to see you there!

Deadwood Meets Hellboy and All is Briefly Right with the World – Robots Root 3 Aug 2017

Ian McShane as the new Professor Broom? Say it isn’t so! No wait, say it IS so. That’s amazing casting!

Robot’s Root thus!

  • Trek giveth and Trek taketh… So, the trailers for ST: Discovery look really promising. And yet then, just to make sure equilibrium takes hold, they are supposedly developing a KHAN prequel series no one needs to see, regardless of the plastic pectorals.
  • Honestly, I expect no less from a feces bot.
  • New Vice Principals is coming soon… second and final (SAD) season… cannot wait.
  • Those newer close-ups of Domino are really impressive. She has a great jawline, and making the circle a birthmark was brilliant.
  • Jessica Chastain as a badass Shi’ar is the best thing that could happen to the Fox X-Men franchise, and at least she’s publicly admitting it’s happening now.

That’s all for now. i’m going camping and given our approximate adjacency to Donner Pass, regionally, there’s a chance I’ll be eaten. if not, I hope to be back Saturday, and prepared to get ON with it.

Welp, much like poor (presumed) Wun-Wun, winter came for us here at Robot-Kraken. Kris has been battling some family strife, and guest-host Blake Simmons and I were supposed to record tonight but entropy won. Slim chance we’ll get an opportunity to review Game of Toles S07 E03 before Sunday’s new episode, so quite possible we’ll be doing a commentary on both episodes next week.
Keep sharpening that obsidian, and check your pies for family members…

PRAY TO ME! – Robots Root 21 July 2017

I’m running out of space on my neck for all the Mondo poster recreation tattoos I need to do.

Robot’s Root!

  • To hell with the Blu-Ray. I don’t do the medias! But give me that ARM. This is how it starts… at least at one point in one of the timelines…
  • The Shape of Water looks like a whimsical cross between Del Toto’s Hellboy work (I mean, Abe Sapien, COME ON) and some sort of Coen Brothers fever dream.
  • This Rick and Morty S03 trailer requires a psych evaluation before viewing.
  • I am, unfortunately, a product of the target market.
  • Unlocked is my kind of jam! However, this oversharing trailer is not.
  • NIGHTMARE FUEL for nightmares that nightmares themselves have.
  • Continuing my theme of being optimistic about ST: Discovery, I love this retro tech. LOVE IOT. The costuming and design work for the Klingons is excellent.
  • Walter Goggins in an undisclosed role in Ant-Man and Wasp? I’m so in… I’m like OVER IN.
  • I know it’s profound and everything… but just look at how gorgeous they are.
  • I lasted three hot minutes in my attempt to not watch the second Kingsman 2 trailer… man I cannot WAIT.
  • Star Wars, but with Owen Wilson’s ‘WOW’ as the light saber sound FX. Brilliant and mesmerizing.
  • The weirdest things from these SDCC views of the Justice League costumes: the fact that the mannequins are shaped, posed, and detailed about 3% as well as the Hot Toys stuff, and that Flash’s hodgepodge is held together with arbitrary flex cabling.
  • This move to shove Shazam out the door before Marvel’s Captain Marvel film is both a little bit ballsy and also pure DC/WB at this point. No script, just an awkward live statement in a Kevin Smith interview.
  • Best ad for GOG2 Blu-Ray ever. EVER.
  • This Defenders promo is composited strangely, hampered by misplaced nostalgia and awkward narration by Stan Lee that doesn’t fit the tone of the Netflix shows… but the core concept of damaged, human heroes IS a Stan Lee base concept, and we DO get a shot of the Punisher, admittedly with a bad haircut.
  • Inhumans is getting worse instead of better. I’m struggling to be optimistic.
  • A recurring theme with the non-Marvel supers films that always bothers me: scheduling them, attaching creators, generating hype… all before a script. Sure, a number of the Marvel films had poor or missing shooting scripts, but especially early on, and they weren’t presented as empty tins with zoomy labels like this. Here we have the Venom people talking about what they plan to do, not about a script in place. That’s just fundamentally wrong.

  • Best Batman Black and White statue ever, courtesy of Becky Clooney, who first got to see it in people’s snaps from the con.
  • And here’s something interesting: Doctor Doom solo film, developed by Crawley and involving Dan Stevens? WOW.

Lastly, Kris and I began our second annual weekly-ish Game of Toles commentary last night, and it’s available today. I’ll post a formal thing about it later tonight, but here’s the itunes link:

I Dreamt Music – Robots Root 5 July 2017

Sure, I posted this header because my man Deckard is demonstrating excellent taste in upholstery. But also, as of tomorrow, we only have to wait a nominal 3, I say 3, months until the new film’s release. That pleases me.

Thus and therefore, Robot’s Root!

  • If you watch Silicon Valley, and you should, one of the best parts is the opening sequence, which features a Sim City style narrative about the setting of the show. It’s changed from season to season (as the tech industry is literally SO volatile that companies come and go from prominence in between seasons) and this 7 minute video does an excellent breakdown, highlighting some cool easter eggs and references.
  • New Mutants: Rosario Dawson is out as Celia Reyes, and Alice Braga is in. I hope this is indicative of Dawson’s ongoing role in the Marvel Netflix universe of shows, as she’s 90% of their value.
  • Best X-Men: Dark Phoenix news thus far: Evan peters is confirmed to return as Quicksilver. It’s really all I need. More important than Jean Grey, in fact. Snap! Meanwhile, the buzz is that Magneto will be (shoehorned) into the Dark Phoenix storyline in a messianic style which means Acolytes and Genosha and everything that has bored me to tears about the X-Men comics of recent decades. So yay.
  • Patty Jenkins is apparently confirmed to direct WW2… which isn’t the foregone conclusion it SHOULD be… so that’s hopefully a true thing. Bonus GIF because Wonder Woman.
  • It’s early yet, but as an unapologetic True Detective fan, hearing that Mahershala Ali could join, and that a third season may still be moving forward are well-received bits of business.
  • What is this even: a six-part western anthology by the Coens… The Ballad of YES IM SOLD TAKE MAH MONEHS.
  • Here’s a relevant but not relevant diversion: new favorite brand-aware graffiti crime spree. I think it might be Torsten.
  • JAWS as viewed in an outdoor pool-based theater? NOPE.
  • I havent watched this yet, because I’m waiting for the new season of Preacher to end first, but when I do, I bet it’ll be spicy.
  • This is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. For today! Shoen, a kimono wedding dress line…
  • Nicolas Cage as every character in GoT because of course.
  • Discussion regarding the Spidey suit, and where it moves from practical to CGI, and how rarely it does…

And finally, because it exists: FELT TARDIGRADE.

A Cherry Blossom Urban Moment and Other Things – 29 June 2017

I’m really chuffed about my current iOS background. This too can be yours.

Meanwhile, I present: Robot’s Root!

  • Wow, so, I’m not sure the better takeaway on this one: inspect undercarriage for ticks on the regular, or have a full size water tank on hand for red ant attacks. Either way.
  • I think i see some cues from the Iron man Bleeding Edge armor in these Infinity War drone snaps. All the LEDS! Love it.
  • Lucas’ museum has been approved to go forward in LA, which is generally good news, because i’m in LA all the time, and I want to get up IN there.
  • Bloody, practical FX, Hellboy… these are all on my X-mas list…
  • I’m not going to Game of Toles night at the Giants stadium, but the GOT intro sequence is still one of my favorites, so this was a treat. Thanks, Lung!
  • I think it’s WAYYYY too early to get excited about the new The Batman… but I will say that all this noir Hitchcockian referencing works for me.
  • I really want to see Lord and Miller rejoin the Flash film. Think about it: DC desperately wants to ‘lighten up’ the DCU. Lord and Miller were fired for, among many issues, an overly-comical, improvisational tone to the footage shot and the script deviations taken (raging Kasdan into rage) … and finally, these solo films from DC struggle under the weight of their own imagery and nostalgia… Ezra Miller’s Flash thus far has been witty… how interesting would it be if Lord and Miller SUCCEEDED and made a good film for DC?
  • I can’t even with all this Sony business. Kraven and Mysterio solo films? Really? And Carnage is the big bad of a Venom film? SO MANY TENDRILS.
  • Watchmen as an ongoing on HBO was all anyone wanted in the first place, though I’m no hater of the film by any stretch.
  • You like Legos? And Fuchikomas? HERE
  • I want to like Inhumans. Despite everything. The trailer launched… and it’s devoid of tension. I don’t even. At least Lockjaw has a tuning fork, albeit a surface branded one… the way I like things in general, I guess. Glowy tattoos FTW. More breakdown here.
  • On the other hand, the Jumanji trailer launched and I LOVED IT. ‘you don’t go in the water with a backpack everyone knows that.’
  • I’m surprised by my own self, liking what I’m seeing from the Netflix adaptation of Death Note. It’s all about Willem Defoe + Death God as he’s always looked. Wow.
  • Valerian is getting better early buzz than I anticipated. If nothing else, not surprisingly, it needs to be seen on the big screen…
  • Hey cool, noirish trippy Alan Moore project that he actually wrote for live action so maybe 3% chance he won’t distance himself from it with vitriol. Looks great! On Shudder.
  • Spidey’s early buzz is REALLY good, which is also promising… meanwhile, Tom Holland is apparently an unintentional enthusiastic leaker who hasn’t been given the Infinity War script out of caution. He supposedly got the OK to tell folks it’s Peter parker (retconned) into IM 2… I like that nod. The connection of Stark to Parker was important in the comics, and I think it’s a big part of how the new phase of Marvel movies goes… speaking of, THIS is finally available…
  • So for those of you who’ve seen WW, you know that cool moment where she meets Chief, and speaks with him in Blackhawk? Apparently he introduces himself as Napi, a trickster god, and it was in the script. Also the first time she actually shakes someone’s hand. Interesting! Apparently in canon.
  • You may have read this (quickly debunked) interpretation of the story of Andy’s father in Toy Story… Im not convinced it’s NOT true, given the circumstances. I actually REALLY like it. It’s chilling.
  • Also, this happened: my new spirit animal

Thus and therefore, I leave you to your e-musings.
