Load-Bearing Reference Material – Robots Root 22 Oct 2018

Geoff Darrow is abandoning THIS space in Chicago… and moving to France. HOT DAMN I want to go to there.

Meanwhile, science. Space science:

  • Ana de Armas, 99% of the non-Ryan Gosling sexiness in Blade Runner 2049, has hopped onto Knives Out. I’m telling you, this movie will be a thing.
  • Capture the Lab.
  • With the exception of the ongoing weirdness of the cape straps, the new all-black Superman costume from Supergirl is probably the best looking suit in the modern era yet. So little unnecessary texture…
  • Guardians of the Galaxy 3: Hot Christmas… well, despite using the script, I fear that this movie may be redubbed hot ass if they don’t figure something out. And not in a good way.
  • The millisecond after T’Challa ashed up in Avengers: Infinity War, my first thought was SHURI in the suit.
  • Miss Bala looks good to me. I like the setting and the way Gina Rodriguez is sucked in. Optimism is key. Plus, I liked her before, but really got into her after Annihilation.
  • Saddest thing about the momentary loss of Iron Fist is the lack of Jessica Henwick on screen as Colleen Wing. And now that Luke Cage has also been canceled, signs do continue to point to the Disney service: the contract renewal for the Marvel Netflix shows just so happened to be at the same time as the streaming service launch. Now, let’s just skip to the end and get a Daughters of the Dragon (and a Heroes for Hire, why not) series at Marvel properly.
  • The best thing about Grant Hurlburt’s project to draw one frame from each movie he sees is how he elevates some of the dogs.
  • A well-timed look back at when a Venom on screen was even worse.
  • SPOILER: Only follow if you’ve seen more than the first half of Daredevil S03. PS this season is AMAZING so far. Just next level. Two scenes so far have been legendary. This talks about one of them.

That’s all for today. Brought to you by the 33% Nation of Tumbler wheels.

They Didnt Save Your Life – 30 January 2017

Image
This poster art rules everything around me. Duochrome awesomeness. link!

– Toys are rarely the best foot forward in terms of film costume design, but I will say this: at least Parker’s pre-Stark suit looks like something a kid actually put together, rather than the unexplained suits in the last round of these films. I’m no fan of the Scarlet Spider but it makes sense. link!

– I hope Geoff Darrow will have copies at Rose City in September. His table was sparse last year but can’t wait to get my hands on this book! link!

– Like old timey patterns and violent xenobiological terror? This mug is for you, courtesy of one lung: link!

– Coen Brothers do Easy Rider: link!

– RZA confirmed as director for one of the Iron Fist episodes (#6, which is divisible by three, so) link!

Hopping on a plane… tend to your cybernetics and I’ll see you soon…

Tax Collection I Can Get Behind – 28 Nov 2016

Image
What’s this? Tom Hiddleston potentially joining his High Rise director for an adaptation of Hard Boiled? I’m in just to see them ATTEMPT this. This visual style in and of itself seems impossible to translate to film. And don’t reference Matrix and Pacific Rim. Those are tame designs in comparison. Geoff Darrow is an odd duck and totally awesome by the way as evidenced by my brief conversation with him at Rose City Comic Con. Just giving no shits. I loved it.
(full size here)

Meanwhile, a hail of bullets:

– Pacific Rim has started production. No massive kaijus spotted. What they aren’t real? HOW DARE YOU.
via

-They are remaking Highlander because 2016.
via

-Angela Basset has been cast as T’Challa’s mother in the Black Panther film. So surreal. I’ve wanted her for Storm since the days of our earliest fantasy castings. Hey, at least she’s getting a cool supers part.
via

-Dig this, SW fans: “Portions of the lost Michel Parbot “Making of The Empire Strikes Back” documentary. It’s never been commercially released. There was broadcast of the show once on French TV. Used here with permission from the wonderful Starwarsarchives.com (Take a visit for more treasures).”
via

– And here, the best pool art ever, from @tenhundred: “This David Bowie swimming pool mural was one of the craziest murals I have ever done.”
via

– And here, the world’s longest samurai sword. BEGS for anime style theft and attempted use.
via

– Great review of SS as a horror film, sent to me awhile back by one lung:
via

– Wes Anderson made _____________ see it doesn’t even matter what it is. Just watch:
via

– Mad Sheila might be the best worst chinese blockbuster knockoff ever for today:
via

That is all for today. Return to your Jaeger training immediately. Those asymmetrical limb functions for no reason won’t asymmetrically work by themselves!

STEALTH and SNOWSTEALTH and STEALTHSNOW – 1 Aug 2016

Welp, yet again more highly detailed and gorgeously, erotically painted IM armor variants I cannot haz but covet. MONOCHROME FTW!

:::

Image
ITEM: You know I try to stay apolitical on these communication channels, because life is short and I have no interest in debating. However, regardless of what side of the insanity line you find yourself on, you HAVE to admit Geoff Darrow’s piece here is brilliant.

:::

Image
ITEM: So, last week, right before I left for the mountains, CW inexplicably released THIS now infamous photo of Tyler Hoechlin in costume as the new Superman as featured on the Supergirl show. The internet cried for 10 hours straight. Admittedly, the backlash memes have been excellent. My favorite reference was: someone move the Kryptonite away from him. He came off as incredibly seedy looking, with a build and posture that said whatever’s the opposite of Superman, and a creepy gaze. I felt like I was seeing some alternate universe thing where one of the Falcones was wearing the suit. Also, my design sensibilities are outraged: loose belt, weird long underwear texture in the bodysuit, and those strange smooth ‘cape ends’ as they attach to the chest (which in other photos are all he wears, the cape being digital) with those gold trim pieces… along with the always-unpleasant stretched-out supercollar.
Image

Reality is, TH can look ruggedly handsome and much more on-model, so I think this may be a fluke. But it takes me back to all the other marketing flubs I can’t grasp: how they could let it out the door. All the eyeballs on it. If its one of those ‘all the designers and marketing folks said it sucked but the executive insisted’ things, I hope it comes to light. The show has shown pretty consistently good costuming, as far as I can tell, and good casting choices… so who knows. But wow, way to FAIL THE WEEK AFTER SDCC.

ITEM: From Family Guy, and true. Dying.

Image
ITEM: Matt Taylor sketched classic Harley Quinn, which was subsequently made into a statue and painted, for SDCC. Looking at this, you can sort of get a sense of how Margot Robbie in jester attire might have worked well. Mostly I imagine it not. But here, wow.

:::

Image
ITEM: We talked about all the SDCC stuff in our latest Robot-Kraken podcast due for release later this week, but one of the things I thought strange about Kong Island, despite the trailer being full of many cool images (including this) is that the money shot for the poster is a direct riff on Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla. Now, Kris noted that, especially with the larger Kong, they HAVE to be angling for a monster mash film… I just feel sort of surprised at the blatant nod.

ITEM: Stylishgeek shows that the movie iteration of Psylocke’s costume, with some altered cuts and angles, looks much better, and more comofrtable. I’d still have gone with normal shorts rather than the 80’s high leotard cut, but anyway.

ITEM: While I 100% loath this campaign Marvel has been doing where they photoshop the design onto the actor posing or waling around (not just Marvel, i see it by HBO too) … the shirt itself cracked me up.

That’s all for now. Cuddle thy chestbusters in peace…

On a very bad night for me, spirits are uplifted by:
1. Wu-Tang infused Luke Cage trailer
2. Iron Fist teaser

Look! Geoff Darrow is still at it. I mean REALLY still at it.

Image
This was from a weird unlicensed local monopoly set that we found in my lovely wife’s hall closet, featuring local businesses as the properties, etc. We estimate it was 1979 or 1980. Anyway, DOJR here included, among their features, tear gas sales and training. That’s nice.

Image
LOVED this old school noir cover for International Iron Man. Artist unknown at this time

Image
Another glimpse at X-Men: Apocalypse concept art. I hate them. Except for Jean Grey, where they took some of the lines from some of her 90s looks (vertical color blocking) but changed the colors. I mean, it’s not flattering, but its less aggravating than the other two.

This was a blast from the past. Mousers? Mousoids?

All the Irish Vampirism You Could Ever Want – 29 June 2016

I don’t want to tread in body shaming controversy waters here (so to speak), but I’m with the apparently minority dissenting opinion, that he isn’t a negative stereotype of Polynesian male bodies, but a cartoon character. Here’s a film where we get another non-white ‘princess’ who happens to not even be emaciated, and this is where the controversy suddenly shifts? My word.

Abraham Attah has been seen in high school garb wandering around in early shooting for SM:Homecoming, and of course everyone has jumped on the Miles Morales thing. I’m kind of hoping not. I love that character, but I’m begging, BEGGING, for this to be a simpler, tighter kind of film. We’ll see. It DOES ave like 33 villains already and a dubious costume.
http://movieweb.com/spider-man-homecomi … set-photo/

:::

Image
What dubious costume you ask? These photos came out last night and we talked about them in the Robot-Kraken podcast we were recording soon thereafter. I called it Spider Garters. I mean, what is even. What is EVEN. Everything about this is confusing, coming off of the sweet design in Civil War.

This was an interesting story from last week: in an interview, Affleck seemed to suggest he turned down the hot seat for Force Awakens. I’m very happy with that film, but I have to wonder if he’s nervous about hitching to the wrong train, as far as directing goes. If his Batman kicks ass, it will be a triumphant counter to the negative stigma of BVS (in which he wasn’t even producing, let alone directing) but if not…

Barkhad Abdi is a DOPE LOOKING INDIVIDUAL. Another rad casting choice for Blade Runner 2, the impossible film that should never be but somehow might end up being awesome.

Bosslogic has been going apeshit with the manips lately, and it’s been fun to watch. This one was pretty good: a hypothetical post-rebirth Superman at the end of Justice League. I vote no mullet, definitely.

Here’s the colorized (Dave Stewart) version of a recent Geoff Darrow cover that blew my mind. So many details (well, yeah) and gags in the signage…

And thus…
