Hows My Breath – Robots Root 9 Nov 2018

Laika’s Missing Link trailer makes everything almost OK. I so cannot even wait.

Meanwhile, in the Quantum Realm:

  • I love stuff like this. As an artist, I hoard ‘chronological costume reference’ material whenever I find it. Which isn’t often. I committed to drawing every Iron man armor, and I’m woefully behind. Granted I have more prints than most anyone else you’ll come across, but I have many to go.

  • Similarly, this Isle of Dogs poster makes me sweat. I want it framed, badly.
  • This 1:1 scale Venom bust is pretty incredible, and I say that as someone who doesn’t like the Venom design and thought the movie imagery looked ridiculous.
  • What the hell? A final Scooby Doo episode?!?
  • Jeremy Irons as Ozymandias? That’s brilliant casting, actually.
  • I was surprised at the news of a Cassian Andor series on Disney+, but I’m quite pleased with it. Rogue One is my favorite SW project, and a prequel series dipping deeper into the pre-Empire post-Sith era works for me.
  • I am not so enthused about the finally confirmed Loki series. They’d have to be pretty creative to make that show work for me. I don’t like him front and center. I like him as a foil and a conflict agent.
  • Honest Trailer for Incredibles 2, followed by How It Should Have Tole You.
  • I know I’m being overly-critical here, but the addition of Slimer undermines the poster for me.
  • Kingsman 3 without the main lead? Either they’re doing a misdirect (wasted energy, as no one cares) and will pull a Kingsman 2 and bring whomever the want back on a whim (I’m looking at you, Mark Strongbad) or they’re going to focus on the Statesmen, which I wouldn’t mind, though they are better as a side element, not the main show. Who knows, with this random franchise. We bludgeoned it to death in the recent Robot-Kraken podcast discussion…
  • Antoine Fuqua is doing a big budget sci-fi/adventure film called the Infinites, which feels very late aughts indie comic… I’m on board conceptually, based on the vague premise and the skills of the director. But an odd choice!
  • A nice look at the creature design in Guillermo del Toro’s work. Which is a short video, because he uses the same three affectations over and over, ha! I kid.
  • OK, now THAT is a costume skin I didn’t expect out of the new Spider-Man game on the PS4. Right down to the zipatone.

  • Jessica Henwick has joined Godzilla vs. Kong vs. Whomever. Which is just being posted as an excuse to show Jessica Henwick in pigtails with an Iron Sword again. You’re welcome.

With that I leave you. Excelsior!

Boba Fett? WHERE?! – Robots Root 26 October 2018

When the Mandalorian was announced, I thought I could just make out the distant din of the death drums for the Boba Fett film. And so!

ROOT!

  • The latest in the list of films that should not be remade… has an apparent script
  • Brad Pitt as Rasputin? Rachel Weisz as anyone? This Kingsman prequel sounds better than I had ever imagined possible. Which was a low bar, admittedly.
  • This Jimmy Kimmel/Avengers comic took me back to reading those from my youth, like Letterman (the homage) and similar ones. Trippy to see it in a contemporary setting, as it looks so tacky today. I mean, it coasts on the homage, which is at least something, I guess. I’m not one who likes the dips into reality in comics. The Presidents that are obvious references to the real world, or even the 9-11 tie-ins…(grouchy, I know)
  • This Mulan art show has some pretty great projects. Check em out!
  • Alexander Skarsgard has joined Godzilla vs. King Kong, so thats a thing. I’ve lost track. Is this AFTER Planet Kong or Deathmatch of Monsters 3000 or whatever it is? Millie Bobby Brown is in the cast, so that’s what threw me. Same film? Different film?  Who knows. How could we possibly ever know.
  • I can’t believe it took THIS long, but here’s a Gundam kit with a robotics pack. Love it. Where was S.T.E.M. when I was a kid dammit tole.
  • This was kind of a surprise: they found more material from Ray Harryhausen, and are parlaying that into a new film. Of course, it appears to be all of his Grade Echhh material.
  • Cool article on ‘the Monsters of Climate Change‘… I never noticed that Annihilation’s Mimic Bear had a human skull fused up in there! (More on that in our latest Robot-Kraken Podcast!)
  • I’m intrigued by the Big Kill… I mean, it looks like a multiplayer RPG set in the Old West. Hilarious.
  • The Big Lebowski will never not exist. We at least have THAT.

That’s all for tonight. It’s not too early to get your HAL 9000 Xmas Ornament. I’m already on it, cousins.

Just Wingin It – Robots Root 25 July 2018

OHAI DAUGHTERS OF DRAGONS

Meanwhile, this:

  • I still can’t wrap my head around the fact that Williamson is developing ANOTHER show for Hulu starring the ex husband of the star of his current show. But anyway. Space. I’m in.
  • I’m cool with Sivana not being a mad scientist, which was much more proto-Superman.
  • Dungeons and Doggos. You’re welcome.
  • The one GoT spin-off to make the cut to series is set in the very distant past of this continuity, which on the one hand makes the most sense (otherwise why not just keep telling THIS story; I don’t know how we’re supposed to end with a few final long eps, big winter and zombie army and death everywhere, whith any sort of closure at this point) but it DOES run the risk of feeling more Lord of the Ringsish/generic fantasy. We’ll see.
  • Expanse S04 I cannot wait I cannot FACKING WAIT.
  • I may have posted this before, but it’s a great article exploring how Always Sunny has become more and more progressive even as it remains raucous and offensive. I personally think these ‘progressive’ moves in the story are to piss off just another subset of viewers, which i love.
  • My first time seeing the SDCC poster for Godzilla. Pretty dope, and brand aware. Kris was stunned on the podcast the other night that Ghidora is not my favorite monster, for reasons.
  • I feel like this supposed possible casting interest for Batwoman is a bit on the nose. As I’ve babbled on the podcast several time: it must be Jane Levy.

  • I’m toling you. Well, Batgirl anyway. Batwoman, whose to say.
  • Oh come ON. I get the legacy behind this easily most-famous-giant-robot-anime but it’s just Star Wars, u guise. Not rocket science.
  • We spoke a bit about the James Gunn firing controversy on the podcast we recorded the other day, and referenced Bobcat Goldthwait. Here’s that story. Then yesterday, Dan Harmon is off twitter due to dredged up comedy material he wrote years ago.
  • Apparently Ryan Reynolds originally hoped to play Wally West. SUCH a better fit than Green Toleyou.
  • And now Frances Conroy is on board Joker?
  • yes please.

Thats all for today . Off to go measure my groffice for that new carpet…

Permission to Come Aboard – Robots Root 23 July 2018

Points to James Wan for having the stones to make Black Manta(s) a thing in this film.

In the vortex of post-SDCC space madness, these were the highlights for me this weekend:

  • I’m comfortable being the lone voice of optimism about Battle Angel Alita. I’m pretty sure they reduced the eyes since the last trailer 8 months ago or whatever it was. It just looks like a solid session of cyberpunk RPG. Optimism! Then again, they could have just cast . Christina Ricci and called it a day.
  • Deadly Class looks like alt-universe X-Men where everybody is being trained to be villains. I love it. Can’t wait!
  • Stan Against Evil looks really, really fun and weird. As the creator said about the initial premise: “My Dad as Buffy.”
  • I didn’t read Dark Knights: Metal, but I do love me some Jock. I have very little interest in this project overall, but I enjoy the pretty pictures. “Punisher is a broke guy in a van.”
  • Robert DeNiro joining the Joker film? What is even. I get the character he’s playing etc but still this whole project feels very much like we’re watching something from another reality.
  • I need to start watching Misfits & Monsters. With all of my free time.
  • Disenchantment looks pretty much exactly like what you’d expect if someone were to pitch to you: Groening + AD&D + no censors.
  • The Aquaman trailer had some really fun moments, no question.
  • Speaking of fun, or trying to be fun, Shazam is still intriguing, but I fear the neutered-Big situation isn’t going to work as well as they hoped.
  • Godzilla: King of the Toleyous looked dank, dark, and ominous… but I do love those other monsters. Especially Mothra. Those wings!
  • Finally, Glass‘ full trailer, along with Lung yelling at me, convinced me I need to go back and watch Split after all.

In other news, this review of MI: II cracked me up. It did not age well, no.

Cardi B crossed with Star Wars actually works very well. My favorite was the sound of her grunting as the Hoth turret.

The Ennis House is finally on sale, and its a good deal!

Jeff Goldblum can’t cook.

That is truly the limit.
