I Corpse and I Know Things – Robots Root 5 Nov 2018

Reportedly, the new final season of Game of Thrones will have the ‘biggest battle ever filmed’ which surprises precisely zero followers of GoT. I’ve been thinking a bit lately about how the final act was to be a few full length telefilms, and then they broke it into a string of long episodes over a short season. I fear the original plan would have worked better, because less ‘filler’ to stretch out events, while at the same time, the latter approach allows us more time for character work. I truly love that show, and I’ll take all that i can get. But as much as I have demanded, on the podcast, to know how it is that we can get all the way up to the final few episodes without the whole Winter Having Came… i’m less interested in all the big set pieces and more these final interactions with all of these beloved characters, especially as so many will be corpses well enough. Or worse, like ole’ Wun Wun (maybe)…

Meanwhile, for science:

  • First test screening reports indicate Hellboy was a hot mess. But do they really, is it really, and should this matter? I saw a test screening for Terminator 2 after all. Lots of comments on that card. That’s the POINT. I retain my grip on optimism with a red right hand!
  • Speaking of Hellboy, or older Hellboys, or actually prior Hellboys who are also older, here’s a preview for Asher, a fairly by the book looking ‘hitman retiring’ story, but with an intriguing cast: Ron Perlman and Famke Janssen, among others. I like it. I’ll give it a go.
  • Alien Nation is being remade, and by Jeff Nichols, who I don’t know much about since I never saw any of his films… though I DO get a red flag when I see that he refers to himself in the third person. Not even Barton Fink self-applied ‘that Barton Fink feeling.’…
  • Brianna Hildebrand has joined Persephone, and all you need to know is that it’s spacey and it includes Brianna Hildebrand. Sold.
  • John Cena is sniffing around Captain America, throwing out cryptic hopeful images on Twitter and what have you. Thing is, though: he’d make a great USAgent…
  • Can’t believe the Deadwood film is actually happening. I have to say, reading the premise: that’s a smart move.
  • This video about Pixar Halloween traditions was great. It’s animated, but you get the idea. Love the tech support idea!

Finally, a great article on how to deal with loving video games once you have no time to play them. It didn’t really help ME, because time isn’t technically my problem, it’s competition for scarce resources: I feel like that time needs to be spent on my art projects. But still, good reminder that playing in short bursts, the RIGHT kind of massive game, with lots of smaller side quests, can be satisfying. Looking at you, Red Dead!

These ARE The Villains You’re Looking For – Robots Root 2 Nov 2018

Ewan McGregor as the Black Mask? How is this even? I’m quite on board. I assume we’ll see plenty of the villain without the mask on. I’ve never ready contemporary books with the character, so I wasn’t sure about him having a civilian identiyy, but I’s uper down. I’ve only ever drawn him with the mask.

Meanwhile, for science:

  • I love this project 3,333 times. AI artifact-persons inserted into landscapes. It speaks to me.
  • While there’s been precisely zero info out there about the quality of his script for WW 1984, David Callaham has been tapped to write an undefined Marvel film. The interesting part is that Patty Jenkins selected him, so that adds to the hope that it’s for one of the upcoming female-led projects at the House of M
  • Best Star Destroyer based Halloween costume involving a bike ever. Lung was on board immediately.
  • This dove-tailed nicely with my practice at shows of applying non-trademark diluted names to cosplayers and sometimes my own work… cheeky!
  • HELL YES: 1938 LA for a new Penny Dreadful series!
  • Leo DiCaprio in a Time Machine film from the production team of It? I’m IN! I LOVE old-timey Leo.
  • This Lego Bond AM is amazing. Look at those functional details!
  • Here’s a pic from Jessica Chastain’s sort-of-Bourne film, Eve. I’m in.
  • I love these particular Vans x NASA but I must be frugal.
  • Here’s a look at the What We Do in the Shadows expanded TV series. I’m intrigued, and I originally thought it was a fool’s errand.

And lastly, I leave you with Brie Larson handing out candy as Samus Aran… holy moley.

Mount the Curb To Scale – Robots Root 14 September 2018

I HAVE SO MANY DESIRES FOR THIS R/C TUMBLER I CANT EVEN. Only second to my desires for a fully functional 1:1 scale version. HA.

Meanwhile, for science:

  • I remain on the fence regarding all this Henry Cavill business. I like him, and I’m not convinced that this isn’t all just some contract negotiation or something. His tweet last night was WEIRD. Anyway, the internet is rumbling forward, like those Mortal Engines… here’s some good thoughts about a fresh take on Superman… and here’s the current (apparently) Vegas odds… along with another set of ideas, with some overlap…  of course Bosslogic is already at it, as well, pissing off some people who can’t grasp a non-anglo Supes….
  • Han Solo in carbonite costume! SWEET! Lung was mortified…
  • This actually took me by surprise: Jason Todd and Dick Grayson face to face in Titans. Lots of fans will be into that.
  • I have seen virtually nothing with Aaron Paul, though I’m well aware of him and his pedigree. Sounds like a great add to Westworld!
  • This series of arts featuring warrior versions of Disney Princesses was controversial in my home. It was first seen by my lovely wife, who had a very negative reaction to the weapons “That’s the answer? Arm them?” and I realized that I saw it, positively, coming from the young adult/adult RPG/cosplay perspective, not the viewpoint of young girls. Interesting!
  • I saw this Lego KITT and cracked up, imagining a stop motion thing where you move a red brick left to right along the front to make the light bar. HA. I amuse me.
  • Venom as PG-13? All hope is lost.
  • Oh boy, what have they done. Robot Man was looking cool in profile… but check out his smashed together eyes and jangy mouth. GUH.
  • This fan theory about Iron Man I agree with. I felt similar. Like any good time travel/time revert story, the pivotal character must be faced with losing something. Think that incredible end of Fringe. That it would be Iron Man makes the most sense.
  • I’ve been begging for a Jon Hamm Bruce Wayne since forever. So YES.
  • Accurate.
  • A new Coen Brothers trailer is a reason to celebrate. Break out the frontier whiskey!
  • Finally, Rupert’s new Captive State seems never more relevant, doesn’t it?

Tie X Fighters are the new Hotness – Robots Root 20 Oct 2017

Isn’t it glorious! Meanwhile, that root:

  • old-timey ‘radiated’ rings? WANT
  • No spiders in here.
  • 100% real dragon remains discovered. Stop asking questions.
  • Now you TOO can make Deckard’s monocular from Blade Runner 2049… assuming you have a sweet 3D printer. If not, why don’t you. Meanwhile, Adam Savage tours the Blade Runner 2049 set and I want to go to there.
  • Some great ideas for Halloween themed treats here. Short answer: everything is possible with skull shaped molds.
  • This is an odd duck but I liked it. This Steam game produces highly realistic physics and destruction in this car simulator builder app. Think Burnout but crossed with those web apps where you launch a body at things. Anyway, of course the internet got involved, and there’s a whole culture of players posting themed youtube videos, like ‘vehicles chained together’ and ‘spectacular heavy semi truck crashes’… anyway, I was enjoying this one, featuring the results of a track of 100 closely spaced speed bumps taken at speed. Really pretty fascinating. There are some amazing crashes in it.

  • Plus, bonus, I’d like to note that the 4Runner only wiped out in the last 10′ or so. My link above is specifically pointing at the 4Runner run, which, by the way, is at approximately 3:33 into the video DAMN!
  • Aquaman is wearing some cool armor in these pics from the solo film production. Mera’s green is greener. AND she’s holding what looks like a gauntlet. HOOKS are happening.
  • All the hoopla about the Robot Wars thing is silly. They’re just tractors with shit welded to them. I will say this: no overturning moment resistance? That’s just silly.
  • Jason Battersby’s concept for a Tie Fighter redesign (above) is honestly the sort of thing I wish we were getting in the new films. We’ve been seeing designs that admittedly do like they play in the SW universe, design wise, but they are strangely angular and crushed looking, not really feeling like three decade later evolutions of these concepts. But check THESE out. Witness all my desktop screens after I rotate through my Blade Runner stuff. Amaze.
  • Speaking of which, here’s some somber Blade Runner concept work for yet MORE desktoppery!
  • Lastly, something I REALLY like, seen in both the second Last jedi trailer (below) and then later in the trailer for SW: Battlefront II: something I’ve demanded since I was a wee lad, a glance at the manufacturing and delivery of the AT-ATs. The former, Last Jedi, and the latter, in the game footage, as ships are seen carrying AT-ATs into orbit the way my kids carry one of our cats. YUSS

WE HAVE TO GO BACK! – 1 Nov 2016

Only two people, excluding my lovely wife, to date, have understood my costume. When did LOST become vintage television?

Meanwhile…

Image
ITEM: So they confirmed Eleven for Season 02. I mean, if they DIDN’T, given how much this character broke into the mainstream consciousness, I’d be stunned.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: This was kind of an interesting, short video of an ex-military type analyzing and describing why the alley scene in Collateral is possibly the best (ie. most realistic for weapon experts) gun combat scene in a film, period.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: All of the hubbub has been about whether Hemsworth was effectively apologetic about a party costume a year ago, or about these guys publicly supporting the Dakota Pipeline protesters. I’m just digging on the details of the tunic. I love the simple layering and giving the chest ‘orbs’ purpose. I know how that sounds.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: I find this project surreal, not being by the Coens. On the other hand, Turturro is an accomplished director AND he created the character, prior to the filming of Lebowski, or so I recently read.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: I loved this film and the cast within. I generally like Liman. He can be full of shiot sometimes, and I don’t see how he’s going to revolutionize the sequel concept (any more than he’ll “turn the superhero genre on its head” with Dark Justice Whatever) but I’l STILL pre-sold.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: After the overly-long Luke Cage, maybe a shorter season isn’t a bad thing. I tend to react negatively when I hear about small seasons, but if it’s quality, then cool.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Some hoopla has been made about the casting listing of a Klingon Captain, given that this takes place supposedly prior to the original series. But I suspect it’s simply the captain of a Klingon vessel.
via

Thus and therefore, that’s all for today! Minder OUT.

Trick or Treat Smell my SITH LORD EWOK GAAAAAH – 161031

Image
GAHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Meanwhile:

Image
ITEM: The LIFE trailer looks good, though very derivative. Fortunately, I like all the things it’s derivative OF, ending with a preposition.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Fonzo is an odd duck of a project. About Capone being senile… and filmed by maligned director Josh Trank? Still, Tom Hardy, so it HAS to be good.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Miller says all the right things to me. It’s what I want from a Batman film too. Frankly, I want BatmanL Year One (comic version) and I’d be stoked with that. Not so much those Aronofsky plans…
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Defenders, shocking and awing everyone, will include Karen Page and Misty Knight. And by everyone, I mean no one.
via

:::

Image
Saw this at Toys R Us. Very expensive. However, it DOES include a ship and 4 other figures absolutely free, so…

Image
Saw this also. At $20 or whatever, I wasn’t compelled. But nice piece.

:::

Image
ITEM: Speaking of a nice piece, here’s my latest Birthday Bugga, done for my friend Lorraine.

:::

Image
A for Effort, C for no skull cap.
via

:::

Image
Not a bad concept… poorly sourced so far… but it could take off…
via

:::

Image
Scared Tauntaun or not, WANNNNNNNT! It’s all I ever wanted from R/C anything ever.
via

:::

Image
Finally, this wins for best costume [not hiding a wheelchair] EVER:
via

And with that, have a happy Halloween…

Birthday Buggas and Other Things – 27 October 2016

Image
Because, you know, I have nothing else to do, I decided to start doing Copic-based Birthday Buggas for friends who have birthdays upcoming. This was done for talented artist Mel Milton, a swell guy. You can see his stuff here.

In other news…

Image
ITEM: Here’s a nice concise history of Halloween has changed as a cultural holiday in the US. I love all that stuff from the teens and twenties and thirties and such. Back when the scarecrows were human corpses half the time, I figure.
via

:::

Image
EDIT: That one time Stephen King wrote a children’s book… sort of…
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Every time Shane Black talks about Predator, I get more and more optimistic.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: This excellent Oily Moss poster design was unused because they didn’t have the license to use the billing block under the title, which is the compositional core of this layout. What a shame. It’s so good.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: A brief history of all the Knight Rider reboots you never watched.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Surprising precisely no one, Mexico City is moving forward with a Day of the Dead parade since it looked so awesome in Spectre. Granted, calling for a parade and actually getting something like what we saw in the film are two different things…
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Great news in concept: Titanfall II will decidedly NOT require a Season Pass or additional paid downloaded content after you buy the main game, which is satisfying to players like me who find those offensive moves by the game developers. I’m really looking forward to this, now that it will have a single player mode AND be available on the PS4…
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Bryan Fuller has agreed to step back from ST: Discovery, instead putting together a dream team of his previous collaborators to help manage the day to day production of the series. This was driven apparently by his schedule burden rather than general displeasure by the studio, though they aren’t pleased that the main character has not yet been cast…
via

Image
Meanwhile, Variety has some interesting ideas about either Adam Scott or Kelsey Grammar…
via

:::

ITEM: JJ Abrams and co have confirmed that his upcoming, and well cast, God Particle, is connected to the Cloverfield universe. I like this. A LOT.
via

Speaking of Cloverfield, I just noticed something:

Image

:::

Image
ITEM: Bad news: Toy Story 4 is delayed a year. Good news: Incredibles 2 has been brought earlier a year. So yay for that! I love the Fantastic Four…
via

:::

Image
ITEM: The more I see of Old Man Logan, the more I like it. He looks awesome all haggard and bearded and scarred and rad. More than his usual look. For me, anyway.
via

:::

Image
And thus, it’s THIS kind of day. I’m fine with it.
