Cackling in 3 Frames Per Second – Robots Root 30 June 2018

Now you too can have a laughing Prince Adam figure of your very own. Memetic!

I’m done with my Spring conventions, and now in Washington on a short vacation with the younglings. Here’s a blast of interesting somethings over the last few weeks!

  • Wonder Woman + George Orwell? You decide!
  • Everyone’s talking about that Black Manta helmet, but I’m all about Orm’s sweet hairstyle.
  • Apologists and recontextualists aside, these comments nauseated me.
  • If nothing else, Red Notice sure has an eye-catching cast.
  • You too can build an Alexa-enabled L3-37. But… should you?
  • Preacher 3 is only a week away!
  • Incredibles 2 was a hoot… and the weekend box office sure seems to indicate people realized it. It does look decidedly familiar… by design.
  • Here’s a great video of Andy Serkis discussing mocap’s evolution
  • Here’s an interesting article positing that Shazam should be the path to the future of the DCEU.
  • As someone who works in a small, pressure-cooker environment without HR and with unconventional, lets say, communication from time to time, I’ve been following the discussion on workplace abuse in Hollywood (a mechanism for talking about it not in Hollywood, of course. ie. the real world)… the sexual abuse and sexual politics are very obviously evil, but the verbal abuse has been something that creators in the entertainment industry have been forgiven for (as long as they are ‘successful’ and ‘auteurs’, my emphasis… on the one hand, some people need to be more prepared and clear about the hostile environments they are getting into, and on the other hand, people should be respectful, or there should be consequences. Interesting debate.
  • Everyone’s laughing about how they isolated Iron Fist knowingly. I just loved that they included Colleen Wing!

More to come!

Shes Bloody Hot Mate – Robots Root 12 April 2018

Milla Jovovich posted this photo… of her own character… the other day, and the Mignola side of the interwebs screamed. I know I did. Can’t wait.

Meanwhile, in space:

  • Literally: Expanse S03 e01 aired last night, but us streaming types have to wait until FRIDAY FFS, throwing off our planned Robot-Kraken Podcast recording agenda for tonight. But if you need a refresher, here’s a primer. Better yet, quickly go read ALL THE BOOKS. Then watch all the eps.
  • I present: Icky Mouse, by Dann Matthews. Amazing.
  • Thinking about the classic X-Men/Teen Titans crossover from my youth, while I agree that it is still surprising that the two rival companies collaborated while both properties were at their peak, thinking about it now, I would offer that this was back when the company rivalry was good natured, and hadn’t turned vitriolic as it did in the 90s and beyond… back then, if readers knew there would be Justice League and Avengers movies out within a year of each other, they’d be collectively ecstatic. I know I would have. Today fans of one property actively try and sink the movie of the other. It’s unreal. The other aspect of this that I have a different perspective on today is that creators move from company to company. At the time, the idea that Claremont was able to write, and Simonson draw, the DC characters effectively seemed exotic. In today’s market, however, creators sometimes work at both shops, or move from one to another. It’s just story. Anyway, blast from the past…
  • A Bourne prequel called Treadstone is in development. I mean… why even call it Bourne. It could be any black ops agency.
  • You like movie sequels? Atomic Blonde has one cooking. You like sequels for your sequels? Then Jumanji has one… and the Rock is generally cooking something. You like sequels for your TV shows? Jessica Jones has one too!
  • Predator has undergone extensive reshoots for the third act. I keep saying this, but today significant reshoots are common on most major productions, and do not necessarily signify problems. We want the best film possible, after all.
  • Jeff Wadlow had a script treatment for He-Man that I have to say, I agree with generally. I think this film wants to be nostalgic and referential and fun, not a grim redesign.
  • Mulan is getting serious. Donnie Yen! Jet Li and Gong Li! I want to go to there.
  • David Leitch is apparently on board for the Fast and Furious spin-off. All I can say on that point is that he might be too good for it, but it might elevate the property.
  • What is EVEN with the Stan Lee situation?! It gets more and more surreal by the day.
  • Like tabletop games? Like Starfleet Battles and BSG? Here’s everything in one package for you. I mean, probably not one package. From what I’ve seen of the recent Star Wars tabletop stuff, you have to buy a million different expensive expansion packs and individual ships. Obviously I haven’t done table top gaming in years, but it was always that way. Which is all to say, my enthusiasm for this project will be directly related to how many pieces are included in the basic kit.
  • Jeff Goldblum noises.
  • They taught an AI to make its own Flintstones animatics. This can’t be good. I mean, I don’t know how its not good, but it still feels useful to SKYNET. Somehow.
  • Here’s a new Incredibles 2 trailer… filled with all the things.

Finally, look what ole Deeply Dapper found in Fallout 4:

The Cavalcade of Helmetless Heroes – Robots Root 9 Mar 2018

Herewith, witness the Calvacade of Helmetless Heroes FFS!

Meanwhile, in space, this may be happening:

  • Honest Trailers does He-Man
  • My favorite How to Dad video yet.
  • I kinda like this promo pic for Daredevil S03… done by Joe Q, even. I’ ve always been a fan of lettering pushed into the environment of the piece.
  • I have to agree: if we couldn’t have an actually FORMIDABLE foes in Phasma, at least give her this scene to show her ruthlessness…
  • Now here’s the full trailer for Prospect, which still adorns my desktop as a background screen…
  • Killmonger concept art shows that the final version was the best choice. I still wish he kept the mask on the whole time… it was awesome.
  • More neural net fun, this time with sentence gradients.
  • Again, not a horror fan, but Endless looks pretty interesting. Lovecraftian doomsday cult business. Sure!
  • Dafne Keen is on board the new big budget take on His Dark Materials… I think they are abandoning the Golden Compass released prior…
  • Krysten Ritter says no Defenders S02 was planned, nor does one look likely. Depending on how you felt about S01, your mileage varies on this news…

  • Official confirmation direct from Patty Jenkins of Kristin Wiig joining WW2 as Cheetah. I’m intrigued!
  • Karl Urban confirmed that, as suspected, Alex Garland not only wrote Dredd, but stepped in and directed it once the director was canned.

  • Welp, pre-FX aside, Shazam’s costume does indeed appear to be the classic one, with the ubiquitous fine texture weave I hate so much. The fake muscles are weird, but I like the way they handled the lightning bolt, and the cool nod to the golden age books with those Talky Tawny symbols at the cape. The cape design itself, with the stiff hood, is creating a weird massing to his upper half, something I’ve worried about when designing a similar vibe on some TRDL characters with hoods…
  • Rumors are afoot that Jessica Drew may be brought into Spider-Man 2 as a female lead. I’d be down with it. Super down!
  • Neat: Jon Favreau has been announced as helming a Star Wars live action show, presumably for the new streaming service.
  • Mackenzie Davis from Halt and Catch Fire (and more recently, Blade Runner 2049) may have been tapped for Terminator 6… which bodes well for Terminator 6…
  • Elseworlds may be dead… but Black Label is new, and is basically the same thing. I like that Wonder Woman, if nothing else.
  • I love that Westworld not only embraces their obsessive fan community of conspiracy theorists and plot hypothesizers (like this guy) they are actively involving them/us in S02.
  • Reshoots on Deadpool 2… after bad test screenings… thats not good. As nice as the current pedigree technically is (re: our recent podcast about Atomic Blonde and John Wick 2) I wonder what we lost when Tim Miller left.
  • NEED
  • I remain uninterested in Superman comics, but I think BMB is right: optimism is what sets him apart from other characters, and needs to be the focus. All Star Superman was successful in this way.
  • I am SO DOWN with the Morrison/Quitely New X-Men costumes happening here. FINALLY.
  • Lastly, Lego Pacific Rim sweding! Excellent. I’d rather watch that.

Have You Ever Danced With Shermin-Williams in the Pale Moonlight? – Robot’s Root 11 Feb 2018

I don’t know what to make of this Todd Phillips 80s Pre-Joker movie with Jaoquin Phoenix. I mean, I like when they experiment. But DCEU has such a low track record as far as experimenting with VISION. On the other hand, a film about that whole Vision Family in Suburbia book would be legendary. The image above, though, from a set of fan arts, really appeals to me… or peels… I love the flaking paint situation happening.

Meanwhile, these things:

  • When your director backs out of He-Man because they’re too busy with… Krypton… then you KNOW its serious.
  • Even deleted scenes are hilarious. Ragnarok still owns me.
  • This deleted scene from JL is actually pretty good, from a world-building standpoint. It shows a newly revived Kal-El wandering the halls of his old ship, and as he approaches, it automatically offers various resources for him, including the all-black supersuit and the Kryptonian battle armor… internally consistent-ish with Man of Steel. I appreciate that.
  • The winner of that huge 10-year Class Photo MCU situation is clearly Benedict Wong, because player brought a pocket watch on a vest chain.
  • More stuff showing consistency with the McQuarrie front end on the Falcon. Even if it is all part of the longer front end ‘docking module’ which works fine for me, I just don’t know what to make of images like this, below, where it’s longer but there’s a slot. Maybe the central spine is also a modular element than can be removed, separately from the longer vice clamp bits. Maybe, though, these other images are just earlier in the production design… or possibly fake. These days, who knows. This example below, which has been around for months, is the most mystifying. It looks too consistent to be a total fake, so I wonder if it was just earlier in the production. Because it deviates too much from what we’ve seen now. Wrong dish antenna, different front end, no blue and white paint… it does have the turret.

That’s enough for today. Back to rolling housepaint over my face to appear edgy.

Solo Trailer Revealed – Robots Root 4 Feb 2018

It’s finally coming this Monday, they say. Or they lie, and it’s a Superbowl thing. Or they lie, and this project doesnt even exist.

Meanwhile, this is happening:

  • “Action that looks like two Radio Shacks doing kama sutra in a hurricane” – one of the best Honest Trailer lines ever.
  • We’ve Known BMB was moving to DC for awhile now, but it’s official: he’s wandering into the Superman quagmire. What concerns me more, though, is that there are implications that he may be bringing his creator-owned stuff with him. I very much do not want Powers absorbed by DC. Somebody talk me off the ledge, please.
  • I’m beside myself. Normally I’m disinterested in dark and grimy redesigns of classic characters as the solution to film adaptation. But in this one instance, these concepts for a He-Man project look pretty amazing. Cool ways to rationalize the toy elements that make no sense. I know I’ve argued multiple times that most of the designs should just be left alone and ran with, but still.
  • I don’t hate JJ Abrams so the fact that HBO bought Demimonde is fine with me. Budgets!
  • I dislike his modern movies, and I’m weirded out by his bulging face when he talks, but. “Aight potatoes, aight carrots, aight turpentine.” I think I need to know more about Scottish shopping habits.
  • I’m including this since we’ve made a general tradition of butchering her name on the Robot-Kraken Podcast, but this segment on ‘Galspalining’ cracked me up.
  • Look, dont let the fart sounds fool you: teaching Orcas to make human sounds is a B A D . I D E A.
  • The fundamental problem with Venom... which is why they are TOTALLY sneaking Spider-Man in there.
  • Fun, contextual easter egg from Doctor Strange over here.

Finally, my entire world feels like this right now.

We are a few hours away from recording another session of the Robot-Kraken Podcast! If you haven’t been keeping up, head over to itunes and subscribe! Reviews and stars and such don’t hurt either! Good stuff to follow…

The Cosplay Kids Are All Right – Robots Root 24 January 2018

Having wrapped up another comic convention the other weekend, I’ve been thinking a lot about cosplay. Among all the other aspects that I appreciate about this phenomenon (coming from the perspective of one who used to build powered armor out of cardboard and foam) such as the empowerment, expressive freedom, and creativity… it’s the technical precision and claver translation of comic and anime designs into a practical, physical look that blows me away. So. As we wait for the almost-assuredly controversial costume design for Captain Marvel, I keep going back to this particular photomanip. If they just put Brie Larson in this costume, as is, straight from the books, no helmet, no fauhawk even necessary, it would be PERFECT. Just saying: we’ve reached a tipping point the last few years where Hollywood struggles to catch up to homegrown cosplay designs rather than vice versa.

Meanwhile, somewhere in space, this may all be happening RIGHT NOW:

  • Here’s a new movie in which Jason Momoa throws a flaming axe. So, at this point, they just film him wandering around Momoaing about, and call it a day. Guiness!
  • Edge of Tomorrow 2, aka All You Need is More Kill Toleyou!, may be sooner to production than originally estimated. Which suits me fine.
  • Showcase Cinemas on the East Coast of the US are featuring a return of The Dark Knight to the big screen, two dates in February, entirely too far for me. But man!
  • I’m looking forward to Ant-Man and Wasp, mostly because we haven’t seen a ton of interesting married-hero dynamics in film, and I’d love to see that handled intelligently.
  • John Francis Daley and Jon Goldstein have been tapped to direct Flashpoint, which is interesting, as they co-wrote Spider-Man: Homecoming… but the news that overshadowed this is that apparently WB tried to get Affleck to direct it, and he declined. Which is only interesting because it pokes a hole in WB’s recent rhetoric through ‘gossip sites’ that they have been trying to push him out. Anyway, good on them.
  • I’m bored of Millar’s Kick-Ass, but I’ll NEVER bore of Tessa Thompson, so I second the motion.
  • To hell with Altered Carbon, cyberpunk remains firmly NOW.
  • All this talk about Jake Gyllenhaal as the most likely pick for a post-Affleck Batman is interesting to me. I’ve been reacting to it negatively, but more based on my impression of him and how he’s looked in the films I’ve seen, in which he’s leaner, and has a big head and very unusual facial features. But I’ve looked at his Southpaw stuff, and frankly, like Jon Bernthal, it’s very possible he could reclaim this character and mold it into his own iteration successfully. I mean, to be fair, I didn’t think ANY of the film Batman looked like either Batman OR Bruce Wayne… until Affleck, frankly, who suffered from poor scripting and direction, rather than not making the character SOUND and feel right.
  • Not only is The Boys still going forward, produced by Rogen and Goldberg (Preacher), they’ve been casting. How is this going to even.
  • Pegg and Frost are developing a paranormal investigator project, so take my money.
  • Denis Villeneuve made some enemies in an interview released yesterday, noting his plan to make his Dune the ‘Star Wars for adults’… admittedly I’m a fan of his projects, but I did not take that the wrong way. In fact, how interesting would it be if he took a page from Jodorosky?
  • John Wick 3 is greenlit, adding to the TV series also in development. More on this once I’ve watched John Wick 2, on my next trip overseas. Update: saw it.
  • Ron Cephas has been cast as the ancient hand-wavey wizard Shazam in the new film, which I find interesting. Love it, actually.
  • The new Cloverfield film has an interesting premise.
  • Going back to the header image… I dig seeing Brie Larson doing prep work and research for Captain marvel in period-appropriate flight gear. Also, everything else about Brie Larson.
  • Scots language Harry Potter is the best anything ever.
  • Doesn’t it feel like the producers of the He-Man film were just trolling us with this? Literally ALL they need to do is just take cosplayer interpretations of He-Man costumes and have at it.
  • A Robocop film may be in development, as a sequel to the original and sidestepping both the original sequels and the remake… which kind of saddens me, because I DID like the casting and design work for the remake itself… it just needed more thematic power.
  • Babish’s latest opus is the every meat burrito… I haven’t watched that show, but I love the effort…

Finally, a cephalopodic metaphor for what happens if you cross me.

Have a Bat Snickers and other things 15 July 2016

Image
That one time DC stuck an ad for Snickers featuring Batman interrupting a battle with Doomsday to give him a Snickers… in a comic involving a battle between Superman and Doomsday already. Jarring.

Meanwhile:

Super7 have teased a new He-Man short crafted slavishly so as to feel authentic. Other than mixing problems and the overall clarity of the imagery, it looks dead on. Plus I think that’s the original voice of Skeletor there.

This concept art by Andy Park is the first visual clue as to how Mantis will be portrayed in GoG2. My hope is that she will be as rad as possible, so rad so as to help me avoid looking at Starlord’s mech-chest…

Not that it’s uncommon for costumes to change from film to film, but did WW’s blue become bluer? This being the past, maybe it’s just…uh… fresher….

For standard nerds like me, this study was fascinating, and upended all of my preconceived notions about what was possible in plate mail, at least in certain periods, with well-trained, athletic soldiers. It’s an extreme example from history, but nonetheless. I always thought period plate mail would be more than 56lbs (converted) without a helmet, but that’s still a chunk!

Pretty good Honest Trailer for Big Hero 6, which I contend is a pretty great film no one seems to remember. Great points about it being the most Marvel, non-Marvel film ever… especially now that they OWN Marvel…

Good cosplay can help realize how comic costumes might look on film in future projects… it can also help confirm when costumes need changing. This is a great version of Ms. Marvel’s frequent look from back in the day, and I’ve seen other good ones at cons… and it definitely shows that the design needs to change if she’s going to be active and taken seriously. Much like they tried to clean up Psylocke’s look while making it vaguely familiar from the comics.

TWO WEEKS and other things 8 July 2016

Image
I KNEW I recognized Varys from somewhere! ha

In other news…

Image
ITEM: Angourie Rice has been cast in Spider-Man: Homecoming, bringing the new total to 3,333 castmembers. She OWNED her scenes in Nice Guys, so I’m very pleasantly surprised by this revelation.
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-v … ice-908831

:::

Image
ITEM: Interesting bits coming out of the GitS production… Japanese actress cast as the Major’s mother, and another Japanese actress cast in a mysterious role… given how ambiguous the Major’s origin has been… is Scarjo playing an AI shell, a mission shell, or something else?
Also, love the show of support in the photo, given the pedigrees of all involved… Mamoru Oshii, Kenji Kamiyama, and composer Kenji Kawai…

Image
ITEM: Thor 3 production snippets are amusing, as one would expect involving this particular director.

:::

Image
ITEM: good cosplay is good. Lung spotted this one in a good roundup of recent con cosplay photos, and I have to agree, battle damaged Wolvie is AWESOME. Plus, look, they pulled off white eyes!

Image
ITEM: I keep failing in shutting down SS related stuff so close to release. From these photos, it looks like Joker actively applies proper lipstick, not just a smear of clown makeup. Also I admit I like a gussied up pre Harley Harley just fine. Also those head shots are great. Lots of good details, like the gator-dude’s face or Katana’s scar or that Boomerang has bruises and a cut lip.

It amuses me that each of these covers sports at least one person doing a shoulder/neck jig-jag…

ITEM: 80s cartoon nemeses as besties? I’m IN!
So many options on this one.
It feels like a G-rated version of Rule 34 pairings, somehow.

Image
ITEM: Look, as you know, I’m three years behind in my reading (but catching up: I’m almost at Summer 2013!) but I’ve been doing my best to avoid spoilers for the Civil War II event. Of course, the mainstream press got involved, thanks to the movie, and I’ve read too much already, about deaths and such. This tidbit I don’t really think of as a spoiler, because the images are everywhere, and it’s sure to be a very short term headline-grabber. But hey, black teen Iron Man sounds fine to me, if we have a good story!

:::

Image
ITEM: Best news in a long time for a lot of folks, Aliens-wise… official-ish confirmation that films 3-4 are getting voided out of continuity.

Image
ITEM: Another one we talked about in last night’s podcast recording, I’m reassured by this snap of Holland in the proper suit. So many questions…

Image
ITEM: DC is getting on the smash-em-together 80’s nostalgia business, with a newly announced He-Man and Thundercats crossover comic. Those two properties actually work well together, I think.
