That Will Buff Out – Robot’s Root 28 Nov 2017

I am definitely the target market for a 1:1 scale mutilated and torched Vader helmet. Thanks!

That root, that sweet, sweet root (very minor JL spoilers below)

  • The interesting thing about this casting for Daredevil S03 isn’t the actor, who I’m sure is fine, but the idea that the role sheet alludes to Sin-Eater, which i would vastly prefer to Nuke being involved in a Born Again storyline.
  • I honestly feel like the superhero film mainstream acceptance has allowed smarter people than me to start slipping in solid cyberpunk projects without the snarky types noticing. Altered Carbon at Netflix??? Awesome.

  • What is even.
  • This video of Daisy Ridley being interviewed supposedly building a Lego Millennium Falcon is peak linkbait. It’s everywhere. Unfortunately, it fils for me in several ways.
    • Her mouth freaks me out
    • She laughs at herself a lot, but not in an endearing way
    • I like her in her roles more than as a human being interviewed, which isn’t often the case
    • She has a curious, if admirable in this oversexualized culture, obsession with stodgy, heavily-patterned clothing
    • And most importantly: she neither builds the Lego herself nor appears to really respect it. RESPECT THE LEGOS.
  • Do you know how much I approve of the concept of a Mendo Doctor Doom? 100% MINIMUM.
  • Lots of hyperbole over what does and doesn’t work in Justice League, and I’m saving my comments for the podcast overall. But one thing I thought I’d note here: some fans have clamored for a Zack Snyder cut to be released (which does not exist) and since he apparently ‘liked’ the petition, it has been taken to mean that it does, and should. I think he just liked the sentiment. Who wouldn’t? His son made comments about how the film was ruined by WB meddling and comedy, and I think that’s a valid position. It’s also a valid position to say that the original likely direction in Snydervision would be a disaster without the lighter tone pulled in by Whedon. The biggest legitimate criticism to be leveled against the finished project is that it feels, as you watch it, uneven enough that you detect when the hands change, like you’re watching two different films smashed together. For the record, I think the Whedon adjustments were a good idea. It is a messy landing, but it still lands as a more ‘superheroic’ film and frankly a lot of people were unhappy with the dark tone of the DCEU and wanted more of what they call the ‘Marvel’ vibe, but mean a more traditional, inspirational comic adventure experience. This is of course ironic as hell given that DC comics was traditionally about vanilla comic adventuring and marvel was borne from real-world, serious civic issues and told stories about relatable humans. That all said, a lot of what doesn’t work in the film is because of schedule, not an overarching ideological divide. They just needed more time. More time for finished FX, more time to properly pace and blend the two tones. Marvel movies can be both dark and comedic at the same time, both heroic and troubling. I’m looking at you, Russo Brothers. So, anyway, when I see all this Snyder vs. Whedon blamery over the film, it amuses me, because both voices are valid. And BTW I still like the darker DCEU tone just fine.
  • PS I also believe Joss Whedon is still actively working on a Batgirl film, and that the rumors of his dismissal are about as legit as the rumors of WB canceling the DCEU after JL… propaganda that came out over the weekend that didn’t do anyone any favors.
  • I like the look of some of the new designs, but the photoshoppery is killing me. Interns aren’t the answer to every chore. I do think we’re going to see alternate universe or post-reality manipulated versions of characters in A3 and A4 but we’ll have to wait and see.
  • Looking at these pics of a test suit unused in the final film (featuring a Kingdom Come style red-S) reminds me that I wish we saw a black suit in JL. Cavill teased it months back, and Zod’s look when he still had the cape was just B A D A S S S S S S S S.
  • Supposedly Gambit starts production in early 2018 after years of delays. Listen, I still think Channing Tatum is far better as a comedian than as a dramatic/action actor, though if they pull off the same sort of tone as he had in Logan Lucky, it could work. He’s risen in my book over the last year or so, and I’d LIKE to see this film happen, especially as a heist story, despite hating the character.

  • Now, Lizzy Caplan being involved is of course 99% why it could succeed. But hey. Bias.
  • I have a perverse love for seeing the voice actors recording dialog from cheesy animation.
  • Here’s some great cosplay (with all that fancy post work) of Ventress from the Clone Wars cartoon, a character on my to-draw list and one I’d love to have seen make it to film.

OK, that’s enough for today. Until next time, crush your darlings, and by darlings, I mean granpappy’s helmet!

Whose Soul Is This – Robots Root 28 July 2017

Let me just quickly say that the latest episode of Preacher was devastating. I don’t recall if this Cassidy detail was in the comic, but it was beautiful and tragic and so well done. Gilgun is owning this show. Moving on…

Robot’s Root!

  • Disenchantment, a new animated series from Matt Groening, is coming… at some point… and will be excellent. Postmodern, adult fantasy. I’ll take it!
  • Suburbicon is George Clooney doing his best Coen Brothers impression, but I’m fine with that.
  • This posits that Villenueve is on the shortlist for the next Bond film. While I loved the speculative rumor about Nolan taking on a future version of the franchise, I’d be very interested in a Villenueve version as well.
  • Here’s that infamous suit, which you can, and surely should, own today!
  • The latest in Deadwood non-news: now the script is in, and is excellent, and HBO… just needs to… get all cast together, get a budget worked out… you know, little things.
  • Everything you wanted to know about Batman’s ‘tactical suit’ in JL… including floating armor plates that don’t do anything, and straps to nowhere! It’s not that I don’t like it. It has strengths, too. But still, some odd choices.
  • Spencer Wilding has been discovered working on Han Solo. WHAT DOES IT MEAN.
  • Apparently, the next Arrested Development season will be a whodonit about the murder of Lucille. What a great concept.
  • Still struggle with all the humanoid, smooth armored new Jaegers, but the promo from SDCC looks pretty OK.
  • This is NOT the publicity that WB wanted for JL… sort of like all the other publicity they didn’t want. I love all the Cesar Romero Joker images on Twitter this week…
  • Having flown all week, I’ve been thinking a fair amount about this boondoggle after SDCC, in which United claimed travelers couldn’t check comics, and blamed the TSA, which turned it back around on United again. Can you imagine how upset those congoers must have been? I can.
  • “She’s a robocop with a weird robo-walk with a weakness for being snuck up on by dudes with tasers!” Honest Trailer for GitS. I love it.

Robots Root – Because Vespas Amirite 8 April 2017

In this edition of Robot’s Root, many things happen. But none are as interesting or profound as Deadpool riding the Rainbow Bridge on a Vespa.

But we’ll give it a go…

  • Here’s a wonderful collection of pickup lines generated by AI. It’s glorious. My personal favorite: “I have a cenver? Because I just stowe must your worms.”
  • Another great interview discussing America Chavez and her new ongoing from Marvel. Gay, Latina, aggressive, modern. Very cool.
  • This, on Inhumans: it will be an entirely revolutionary supers series never seen before on TV (unlikely); also, the Royal Family have been deposed and are in hiding in Hawaii (OK) the one bright spot is that this means Maximus on the throne and lots of scenery chewing by Iwan Rheon.
  • Mignola has a new book coming out from Dark Horse; it’s a vampire story and should be sufficiently surreal. Art will be by Warwick Johnson-Cadwell. Check out his blog: another wacked-out style for the Mignolaverse and I approve.
  • You have probably heard before that Henry Cavill wore the original Reeves Superman kit in his audition for Man of Steel. I always wondered how that would look. Not great, as it happens. Granted that was 100lbs of steroid meat early and it was a dated 70s nylon material or whatever.
  • I’m still attempting a media blackout on Ghost in the Shell (and by the way, I know one person who said they LOVED it… and they are even Asian… completely going off script) but here’s an interesting look (in the hero image) of early concepts with Margot Robbie in the title role. Interesting. Looks super hot. But then again, obviously.

That’s all for today. As a reminder, Kris of Deeplydapper is at Cherry Con in Salem, Oregon this weekend. If you are in the neighborhood, go buy stuff or bring him booze or both!

Six Seven Go To Hell or Go To Heaven – 21 Mar 2017

Let me tole you: if I didn’t have kids in the home, and DID have $899 laying around…
link!

Meanwhile:

– As much as I crave new Hans Zimmer soundtracks, this interview, reposted across various sites, warmed my heart a bit, because I share a devotion to the Nolan Batman films as well. It’s a very intimate and purposeful connection, the soundtrack developed for that trilogy and the material itself. Nolan and Zimmer work well together, thematically (witness Inception and Interstellar for examples outside of the superhero genre) and when Zimmer did the Man of Steel soundtrack, while it was excellent and distinct, it was lending some of that former world’s pedigree to the new films in a way I found disconnected. link!

– Sony wants to proceed with fast-tracking Venom, without a script or director… in the post-Marvel-deal era, what do YOU want from a Venom film? I can’t decide. I really don’t like the character outside of Spidey using the suit and then slowly going batty from the symbiote’s influence. Once it jumped to other hosts and became 90seriffic, I was out. I do like the black ops version from recent years in the comics, but I don’t see how it would translate. link!

– Similarly, WB / DC seem intent on keeping the Flash moving forward (heh) despite multiple issues with the pre-production. That’s not a good sign. link!

– RIP Bernie Wrightson. That escalated fast.
Not my artistic influence, and I didn’t read a lot of his stuff, but I always admired it from a technical level and enjoyed reading about his convention persona. link!

– We’re doomed. More. link! Mega-rich oligarches in powered armor!

-I’m trying not to read anything about GOG2 these days… but I can’t get enough on Yondu’s cyber mohawk. link!

Image
– Expanse has been greenlit for Season 3, so I can now relax.
link!

– Alicia Vikander may be joining a new Ben Wheatley project involving kicking nocturnal underground beastie ass. His current project looks insane and awesome, so let’s be optimistic.
link!

Image
– Becky Cloonan’s poster for Ghost in the Shell is EVERYTHING. link!

– Reddit is questionable for a lot of things. But the AMA (Ask Me Anything) series is not one of them. Here’s Gareth Edwards… link!

Image
Your random Mike Mignola block-rockin art used as a bossbot’s iphone screen for today.

– I’m generally not a fan of cosplayers photographed and then given a bunch of post FX. I like the craft of the costuming itself, and that’s as far as I go. However, this is really well done. link!

– Apparently Hela knows capoeira in the new Thor film. I appreciate it’s a gladiator road trip movie, but that’s quite a diversion from the comics. Then again, probably a welcome one. Stand around and glower megagod types are boring on film. link!

– Good news for this guy, having just finished Peaky Blinders S03… S04 is due to begin production, and Tom Hardy will return. link!

– So Fox’s X-Men show for broadcast TV? The one with a family on the run with a mutant child, which seems to have little to know recognizable X-anything in it except for Sentinels? Is it going to be called Mutants on the Run? MutantsSuxxxx? Mutant? Nope. GIFTED. Srsly. I was gifted. I had to do more homework. That is all. link!

Image
Here’s your random Black Adam speculative rendering for today, by Chris Diem. Love it. Great proof of concept…

– Henry Cavill is on board for MI: 6. That’s interesting! I hope he’s a villain. Not a team member who betrays them, but a proper villain. link!

– How strange the wheel is… Matt Vaughn gave the X-Men franchise a brief moment of hope, before getting forced out by Bryan Singer. Now, after doing his own thing (Kick Ass, Kingsmen) he’s back in the big studio system’s favor for supehero tentpoles, being supposedly courted for the next Superman film. If true, that’s something to be modestly optimistic about, similar to what happened with batman. link!

Here’s your random Bill S. pic of the day: Dr Doom!

Anyone Not Wearing One Million Sunblock – 160916

Image
It astounds me how much people are griping about these new Japanese Rogue one posters that came out this week. I think the juxtaposition of the idyllic beach and the DS in the background are perfect. In fact, the tropical beachhead setting for that component of the film fascinates me in general.

Anyway, this:

Image
ITEM: Great article on how to approach the way Disney/Lucas canon is formed and maintained, and how the retcon/infill nature of projects like Rogue One must be viewed, here. As a creator of a much smaller, but thoroughly complicated, universe of continuity, I totally get it. One of my gripes (to be featured on a Robot-Kraken podcast soon) is how continuity police freak out about things in canon that are tied to either the technology of the day when the project was created, or the entirety of that continuity prior to the inevitable retconning. This has to be a fluid history, or it doesn’t work. The inability of some fans to separate from elements of canon that were the product of production (actor fired or killed, technology limitations, limited plot vision) vs. the elements that are retcon baffles me. via

:::

Image
ITEM: Henry Cavill’s manager stated that he is in pre-production on a Man of Steel sequel beyond Justice League. That’s not really news. It doesn’t even need to be accurate. It just becomes interesting for non-industry readers who click through and discover Dany Garcia (manager in question) is also manager/ex-wife of Dwayne Johnson AND a competitive bodybuilder as well. It’s steroid city!!! via

:::

Image
ITEM: Cailee Spaeny has been cast as a lead in Pacific Rim 2. Is casting an unknown pop star a good or bad sign on this project? via

:::

Image
ITEM: Forwarded to me by One Lung, this has me written all over it. Or rather, all over the cockpit window of one of these if I were unfortunate enough to pilot it. In organ paste. I remember the last round of this. I don’t care how staged it all is, I still endorse it like a heat sink on a plasma rifle!via

:::

Image
ITEM: By Cthulu, the degree of my want is massive. MASSIVE. A little TINKERING, they say???
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Secret Agent Stan Lee coming your way… I was waiting on this one, for, like, a next day debunk, but none has been forthcoming, so who knows. Hey, film it and they will, you know, but seriously dude. No Big Hero 6 sequel… but THIS is happening. via

:::

Image
ITEM: Welp, they can have like 33 ryes and do THIS. I can’t. There goes the big plan of shooting one of its legs off…via

:::

Image
ITEM: Jeff Nichols remaking Alien Nation? Sure, OK. I mean, District 9 was better, but… wait… WAIT… that was Mandy Patinkin in that prosthetic dome?!? via

:::

Image
ITEM: Fury Road without FX is 99% Fury Road. Amazing. via

And with this, I leave you… for eternity. Or a day or so.

I’m not often envious of Los Angeleans, but hot damn, I’d love to see this LACMA show in person. At one point we were planning on being in LA this month with the kids, but didn’t end up doing so. Check these out, as posted by someone in the Mignola Appreciation Group on FB…

Image
ITEM: This is beyond obvious, on the face of it, but then again, you never know when actors will walk away from films or aren’t contracted for multi-film runs, or melt down over the financial arrangements and become replaceable, etc. Or frankly, studios just being dumb about what did and didn’t work in the previous film’s casting vibe. But anyway, Pena is returning for the Ant-Man sequel, so all is right in the world, specifically about Ant-Man stuff anyway.

Some of this is from special editions in different formats, but the rest, who knows. Works for me though.

ITEM: Just a random side tangent here. This comic has introduced Stormtroopers that are effective. Stormtroopers with different specializations within the same unit, much like traditional infantry. And we saw a good amount of this in Force Awakens, the different functions, better soldiers, etc. When Rogue One first promo material went out, everyone pointed to the black troopers and declared them to be ‘Death Troopers’ from the old SW Extended Universe. This is all an interesting problem, I don’t know if 4th wall is the way I’d put it. But, it’s this perception that Stormtroopers are terrible soldiers because they never hit anything, fall off ledges, etc. But that was all artifice from the filmmaking of the early films. It was framework allowing the heroes to succeed. Even in New Hope, when the blockade runner is boarded, while neither side demonstrates tactics of any kind, the Stormtroopers do take out all the rebels. But the legend sprung from the jokes about that film. Strormtroopers suck. Can’t hit anything. Same as how GI Joe and COBRA were all terrible because in the cartoon they just shot random lasers in the sky. And another layer to this: over time, most general infantry aren’t crack shots. They are hastily trained, young, scared kids. Disoriented, panicked, etc. So yes, in military structure, you have experienced, highly trained soldiers vs. general soldiers, and you have experienced general soldiers vs. inexperienced, new soldiers. But we don’t think about the military and imagine them all being ineffectual, shooting blanks… the greenest soldier, eyes closed, shitting their fatigues, heavily stressed, can accidentally pop an opponent in the forehead. ANYWAY, what I’n getting at is that the bruhaha about this comic is that the Stormtroopers are ‘worryingly effective’ as the writer noted. While I think there’s room for stories about highly trained, advanced operatives serving the Empire’s military, just as we have such units in conventional real-world militaries, the trope that the general infantry of the Empire are worthless is false, based on the Star Wars setting. The Empire is the EMPIRE. They’ve got unlimited resources, manpower, droidpower, clonepower, have captured, and maintained, countless worlds.
Stormtroopers can shoot.

Image
ITEM: Another random aside.
We’ve talked several times about how I tend to think of Alien 3 more favorably than most, colored by my experience seeing it in the theater as a pre-release edit that was prior to the studio cutting it into oblivion. Anyway, I was reading something that referenced ‘the Assembly Cut’… a rework of the film based on a lot of unused or removed material, based on Fincher’s shooting breakdowns, with new content, lots of remastering… you can read about it in detail here. While I’m certain the pre-release early version I saw is different than this cut, some of the things referenced here jive with my memory: the film being longer, with more development for the characters, greater emphasis on the religion, the lack of chestburster grappling in the suicide scene… though there weren’t any cattle in the version that I remember. Anyway, cool.

ITEM: Interesting article about Tick, specifically the new, upcoming relaunch, on Warburton, why the new one was cast so differently, the tonal changes, etc. I used this image only because we’ve already posted the only content from the new one so far, AND I just miss the design and cast from the original. But I’m definitely looking forward to the reboot.

ITEM: This stunt smells pretty artificial to me: Cavill showing up at Comicon in disguise, then surprising Will Smith at the SS signing, then the later cut of him playing a prank on Batman/Affleck/Whatever… see, I’ve always enjoyed learning that celebs were wandering the con floor in costume, specifically because it seemed to show that they didn’t want to be recognized, just wanted to nerd out in peace. Cavill here looked like he was egging to get called out. Muscles out, Faulkes mask on, that’s it. Like he’s broadcasting precisely 0% nerd interest, more like a jock putting buck teeth in and masquerading as a geek to amuse his friends. It feels obviously staged. Same with the bumper sticker thing. My takeaway was that WB was trying to pad the post-BVS ‘lighter DCCU’ thing they pushed hard in the Justice league footage, by sort of retroactively trying to vibe that BVS, the actors, etc were actually good natured fans of the genre full of smiles and that our collective memory of BVS being overwraught and serious and heavy and unfun (murderverse, as Sight says) is inaccurate in light of the new lighter direction*. WHich feels pandering and unnecessary. Had Cavill seemed to relish being at the con and nerding out about products and creators, the way I’ve seen many genuine nerd celebrities do, I’d have a different feeling about it. Odd part is, Cavill doesn’t have a rep for hating the material. He’s not one of these actors looking down on the work. He’s vocally appreciative of the opportunity and fully enjoying the fame and money. Hes just, apparently, a superjock and partier/womanizer blowing his cash and hooking up and being hedonistic and egotistical. According to the word on the street and the content of his interviews anyway. And there’s NOTHING WRONG WITH ANY OF THAT. it just susprises me when they send him out to pretend to be a comicon participant. Meh!
http://geektyrant.com/news/watch-henry- … will-smith

*That is not another jab at that film, either. I’m talking about general perception and cultural presence of it.

:::

Image
ITEM: Films featuring western leads set in foreign countries are a tough nut sometimes. Fodder for controversy and criticism. But China is a huge market for Hollywood, and this is a first-english-dialog film for a prominant big budget Chinese director, and it’s a neat concept for a movie. Plus Damon. And Pascal. I’m optimistic.

I wanted a period one, really awesome, detailed, pulpy Indiana Jones stuff, with, and this is important, A HOT BRUNETTE PINUP GIRL. This Disney reboot will feature a young, female, afirican-american lead, which has already caused some to cry foul, wring hands, complain about the overly-compensating progressive remakes (ie. the Ghostbusters flip-out)… but who’s to say we lose the pinup girl angle? There’s all sorts of directions this could take that keeps it period, pulpy and sexy. You never know. I mean, it wont. But it COULD! But it wont. But maybe.

I even have not one, but THREE aborted sketches in the archives. That all said, I see a lot of good cosplay these days, but I’m particularly impressed when someone makes a design I don’t like actually look good. Great job on this one. I’d still prefer her cosplay any other version of the character or whatever, but she pulled this look off… somehow.

ITEM: Thinking about the tech focus of the new Spidey continuity, how the Vulture appears to be going, and how Stark gave Parker his new suit… the upcoming film is sure to have a suit with gadgets. Look, I don’t like Spidey gadgets. That teaser described awhile back that showed him with a gadety Spidey belt buckle and some sort of horseshit on the shooters bothered me. Just give me the Spidey from Civil War, and 3 hours of it. HOWEVER, if the costume generates web wings a la old Ditko, I’d be down with that!

On Robot-Kraken last time, I mentioned I had a shot of the full Spidey costume from Civil War… well, it turns out, on closer inspection, and by closer inspection, I mean sourcing the photo I had and backing it into the origin post, it was fan-art. Still, not too shabby, and certainly not an offensive design to me. I quite like it.

1. I’ll show YOU a Hard-Water Object: Amber Heard is apparently confirmed for Mera, Queen of Atlantis, in the upcoming Aquaman film. From what I read, and being a Marvel Zombie I had to research her, she’s like Aquaman but can use water-based telekinesis, or something. Isn’t that what Aqualad can do? I dunno. Anyway, Amber Heard. Presumably in some sort of bikini.

2. What Could Go Wrong: Netflix won a protracted bidding war for Will Smith’s Bright, a fantasy film that is to be written by Max Landis and directed by David Ayers, snatching it away from Warner Brothers. This is an interesting thing: Netflix gobbled up a mainstream tentpole action movie with the star and director of Suicide Squad and the writer of savvy genre material like Chronicle. They will be spending easily over $100M before this is done, and that’s excluding marketing. NETFLIX.

On the other hand:
“In the film, Smith will play a (human) police officer who joins up with an orc played by Edgerton to find a magic wand that could do some damage in the wrong hands. In the world of the film, humans live alongside fantastical beings (like orcs and fairies). Naturally, the police have a unit committed to solving supernatural crime.”

god damn iot I hate Shadowrun.

4. Put that Sizzlechest Away: In this bit for Kimmel, Cavill sat around Times Square under a Batman V Superman sign, in a Supes t-shirt, and went unrecognized. Look, he was recognized. He was undressed and sexually savaged by men and women that saw him. This is just New York. They didn’t have time or interest in letting him know about it, that’s all. It’s like how that limber asian dancer was with me in college. WE KNOW WHAT SHE WAS THINKING.

1. Marco DelFonso has produced a number of fanarts featuring Deadpool and Harley Quinn, which make sense on a surface level I guess, both of them being goofy, irreverent, bloody anti-hero types in their current incarnations. It got me thinking though: setting aside how Margot Robbie’s version will land in Suicide Squad, imagining a Harley solo film… would Miller’s Deadpool technique work for this character. I’ve never been fond of her cutesy, lovestruck, swooning cartoon Jersey thing, but take that away, and have her unhinged, looney, playful and sadistic… given the right plot circumstance (you know plot, right? Missing from Deadpool but they squeaked by on that film) I think the 4th wall component could really be interesting. 3,333 quips launched like area-affect weapons, not so much. The challenge would be that she’s a female character. I feel like even today, audiences are harder on female solo films regardless of format or context, and I can see a backlash on Harley done this way, even if it had happened before DP.

4. Look, I’m not shy in saying it: I’m not overly into the MCU Scarlet Witch. I’ve liked Olsen in other roles, but I’m not yet warming to her here, and I think this is an example, a rare example, where there’s neither enough of the comic version, nor enough new redesign innovation, to pull me into this version of the character. I don’t think I need the kinky hair and gypsy stuff necessarily, but the design hasn’t felt fully baked yet. These images of her Cap3 costume aren’t yet winning me over. They read to me like those superhero costumes in TV series where they don’t want to fully commit, like what they used to do on shows like Smallville. Anyway, my eye sees a few changes that would make it more palatable. I think my problem here is matching the costume design to the actress for an overall effect. When I drew the AoU version last year, I was not drawing Olsen the actress, and frankly I liked the look of the design more in that instance. Looking at this refined version, I want changes, and maybe I’ll have time to sketch them out.

Speaking of, I haven’t really seen Cavill speaking his native accent since Henry VIII, so it’s kind of refreshing. He’s certainly more charming here than his stern Clark, his solemn eyebrow-cocked Superman, or his douchey Solo from UNCLE. Then again, that’s ACTING FOR YOU! And on the other hand, it’s challenging to a thespian to be told Batman can fly and has heat vision and they’d rather ride in a car than sit on your thigh in a helicopter or whatever.

Review: The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

Image
Kraken Reviews aren’t always thorough, and they’re rarely objective. No rating scale, nothing like that. Rotten Tomatoes already has that covered. We just like to talk about movies and the like.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

The Summary:
In the early 1960s, CIA agent Napoleon Solo and KGB operative Illya Kuryakin participate in a joint mission against a mysterious criminal organization, which is working to proliferate nuclear weapons.

Starring: Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, Alicia Vikander, Jared Harris with Hugh Grant thrown in for fun

I was initially jazzed about this film during production. It had all the good signs going in: period setting (60s), great casting, cool director, off mix of humor and action (just like Guy Ritchie did with Sherlock Holmes) and finally, it was an espionage story.. so despite never watching the TV series, I was on board. Then it was released shortly before SPECTRE and during the early blitz for Force Awakens and seemed to just fade into nothing in the media eye. I remember it hitting the theater but then rapidly disappearing. That was disconcerting. Like John Carter OF FUCKING MARS and similar projects, I was concerned modern audiences would dismiss this film as being a knock off of other films in the public consciousness. Where John Carter OF FUCKING MARS was an excellent adaptation of the story that predated and directly birthed all of modern fantasy, UNCLE was not necessarily an originator (it was a side project from Ian Fleming pulled from ideas from one of his Bond books) but WAS and is an interesting story device, pulling agents from both sides of the Cold War together. Anyway, I fired it up the other night and crossed all me fingers and all me toes, except those holding my martini glass (containing the homebrew gin, courtesy of One Lung) and dug in.

I was initially turned off. The smarmy, affected debonair Henry Cavill was doing as CIA Agent Napoleon Solo was grating, and the rivalry and cocksure one-upmanship between him and his soviet rival, Illya Kuryakin (played by Armie Hammer) felt tired and cliched. I was frustrated. Only the wiles of Ex Machina’s Alicia Vikander kept me watching. And then somewhere in the second act, I realized I was enjoying it, and in the third act, having a good time and wanting more. What I think did it was dispensing with that initial alpha posturing and almost farcical rivalry, and getting into the meat of the plot, and most specifically, doing it in 60’s Italy, which really kicked up the period fashion and imagery a notch. I personally tire of super so-and-so’s who act unmoved and unsurprised, unflinching, as bullets fly and cars careen and whatever, like it’s all part of a Matrix sim they mastered a long time ago (something that I LOVED in the later parts of All You Need is Tole, when Cruise was plowing through his day like replaying a level with perfect precision in some FPS)… and initially, Solo was very much like this. I get it I get it, it was drawn purposefully broad. But it bugged me. But when things toned down on that front and the guys started working together, I got into it. It only made about $130M internationally on a $75M budget so it’s unlikely to get a sequel, which is disappointing. I’d love to see another one in this series. I’m perpetually starved for period adventure films.

Image
Also, let me repeat, Alicia Vikander.

Image
One last thing: a cool scene at the beginning featured the two spies sitting down at the same table and realizing the handlers hat put them together, and as they start to freak out, the handlers get up and leave them to discuss the joint mission, and as they do, the entire cafe cleans out (ie. the whole place was undercover agents) was fun, and a cool nod to Ritchie’s previous film, Game of Shadows, in which Jared Harris was the same role: the guy that signals for the room to clear. I recognized it but didn’t register where from until I looked it up.
