Mount the Curb To Scale – Robots Root 14 September 2018

I HAVE SO MANY DESIRES FOR THIS R/C TUMBLER I CANT EVEN. Only second to my desires for a fully functional 1:1 scale version. HA.

Meanwhile, for science:

  • I remain on the fence regarding all this Henry Cavill business. I like him, and I’m not convinced that this isn’t all just some contract negotiation or something. His tweet last night was WEIRD. Anyway, the internet is rumbling forward, like those Mortal Engines… here’s some good thoughts about a fresh take on Superman… and here’s the current (apparently) Vegas odds… along with another set of ideas, with some overlap…  of course Bosslogic is already at it, as well, pissing off some people who can’t grasp a non-anglo Supes….
  • Han Solo in carbonite costume! SWEET! Lung was mortified…
  • This actually took me by surprise: Jason Todd and Dick Grayson face to face in Titans. Lots of fans will be into that.
  • I have seen virtually nothing with Aaron Paul, though I’m well aware of him and his pedigree. Sounds like a great add to Westworld!
  • This series of arts featuring warrior versions of Disney Princesses was controversial in my home. It was first seen by my lovely wife, who had a very negative reaction to the weapons “That’s the answer? Arm them?” and I realized that I saw it, positively, coming from the young adult/adult RPG/cosplay perspective, not the viewpoint of young girls. Interesting!
  • I saw this Lego KITT and cracked up, imagining a stop motion thing where you move a red brick left to right along the front to make the light bar. HA. I amuse me.
  • Venom as PG-13? All hope is lost.
  • Oh boy, what have they done. Robot Man was looking cool in profile… but check out his smashed together eyes and jangy mouth. GUH.
  • This fan theory about Iron Man I agree with. I felt similar. Like any good time travel/time revert story, the pivotal character must be faced with losing something. Think that incredible end of Fringe. That it would be Iron Man makes the most sense.
  • I’ve been begging for a Jon Hamm Bruce Wayne since forever. So YES.
  • Accurate.
  • A new Coen Brothers trailer is a reason to celebrate. Break out the frontier whiskey!
  • Finally, Rupert’s new Captive State seems never more relevant, doesn’t it?

Bye Felicia – Robots Root 12 September 2018

All signs point to Cavill abandoning the cape… or the cape abandoning Cavill… truth be told, it would make it a lot easier for the WB to reboot both Superman AND Batman together (while somehow keeping the rest of the JL I guess)… however, I’m somewhat in the minority as one who likes him in the role… I liked him RELOADING in Fallout better, though.

Meanwhile, in space:

  • Thanks to Robert Zemeckis, and the apparently insatiable teen appetite for those CW shows, you can expect a ton of sexy pirate costumes at upcoming comic conventions…
  • Rumor has it Guy Ritchie may be developing a Captain Britain film for Marvel. I suppose that works. I can see him doing Excalibur as well. It’s on the nose, but honestly keeping him working in the London street-level environment would be the most interesting for a Marvel property.
  • It’s potentially optimistic news that New Mutants reshoots *supposedly* are to push the horror we were promised.
  • This whole thing with Mendho just Mendho-ing about while supposedly talking about ‘Skrullin’ felt very Mendho. If you follow.
  • SOLO SPOILER: What struck me most about these Maul pics was that the robotic legs appear to have been practical, when I assumed it was all CGI. That’s cool.

  • Some sweet callbacks here! I can’t wait to rewatch Infinity War and suck up all the cool tangential crumbs…
  • Lovecraftian gaming is ramping up: The Sinking City over here, Cthulhu over there…
  • While this thing here is about Jude Law being Mar-Vell, which we assumed, I’m just super into seeing Ronan as a Kree Enforcer prior to the later film.
  • Deadly Class, Deadly Class, Deadly Class!
  • Rebecca Ferguson from Mission Impossitole just joined Villaneuve’s Dune project. I can see it!
  • I know its just a teaser, but I’d take the year one black suit on DD any day…
  • If you like stunt choreography, check this out. Great perspective from the female side of things.
  • I appreciate the production’s honesty that the Shazam suit is still in evolutionary development. Especially today, where so much of the detail is tweaked in post, it’s quite reasonable. But it might surprise some… I just hope they edit down the Jersey Shore hair…
  • Lana ‘Jubilee’ Condor is joining an interesting looking film project… I wish there was more of her in X-Men…
  • So many Han Solo deleted scenes!

Arm Reloading Since 2018 – Robot’s Root 31 July 2018

All anyone’s talking about (other than that it’s really good and will make a lot of money) regarding Mission: Impossible – Fallout is Henry Cavill’s arm reloads. That was my favorite part of the trailer as well. It cracks me up so much.

Meanwhile:

  • Tessa Thompson can simply do no wrong. I mean, when I can’t even SEE Chris Hemsworth?  That’s a thing.
  • It’s pretty impressive that the cast of GOG issued a support letter re: James Gunn. That’s a lot of political risk for them, and I like that they committed to it. They avoided outright calling out Disney on the hypocrisy, but the letter was well constructed to be positive rather than reactive.
  • You don’t often see a creator get the rights back to the work made from their original material. Controversies on all sides, but still…
  • I defer further comment until I actually finish Altered Carbon S01, but Anthony Mackie is on board as the lead for S02 and I do like him muchly.

  • Well, uh, I guess that counts.
  • Carrie Fisher’s unused footage being in SW Ep VIII is both kind of a nice touch AND indicative that whatever her original arc was to be, it will still nonetheless be radically reduced, and I think that makes sense, all things considering. I was also intrigued that Gwendoline Christie’s name wasn’t included in the returning cast… I smell a maguffin.
  • This is why the Interwebs were invented.
  • This does not look good, but is trying to be indie-weird-heisty, and this does not look good, and is trying to be edgy-die hardie-actioney. Maybe they should have- wait, I have it. Switch CASTS!
  • Look, I’m in, but also, I just LOVE checking out where all the Jonah Hill went. He’s an example to me of a person whose weight loss fundamentally changed how they look. He doesn’t look like a thinner version of himself, like with John Goodman. He looks like his own cousin or something.
  • From Lung: a horde of Thor related tweets that are glorious.
  • OH MG GOD I NEED ALL OF THESE WHY . THE . FACE!
  • This is NOT what I was expecting for Pedro Pascal’s look in WW 1984…
  • More Venom, less enthusiasms. I already had maybe 3% enthusiasms. And this accent? “Ohh, I havah paower saite.” what is even. And look, Phase 1 era fighting your clone. I just. I mean, even putting Michelle Williams in a plaid miniskirt feels desperate.

He Even Paid for That Suit – Robots Root 30 July 2018

As rumors of the Batman solo film increasingly draw comparisons to Batman: Year One, I grow more and more cautiously optimistic. I want facking dark gray under-armor, combat boots, hand stitched cowl and cape, an army/navy surplus belt, flash bangs and sharpened steel knives. And I want failure. [Art by the One Dave Johnson ]

Meanwhile…

  • Honest Trailer for Ready Player One is honest.
  • Captain America’s proposed cameo in Ant-Man and Wasp would have actually been pretty good. Though I agree with the choice to exclude it. Not necessary.
  • The logic here is pretty screwy. Them lost all sense.
  • Reading the creators wax optimistic about future Venom films, I’m reminded of a logical but problematic detail: in reports from SDCC it was noted that Venom doesn’t have the chest symbol. Makes sense, in an origin without a Spider-Man connection. Yet, without that white spider across the chest, this will just be a big rubbery black blob with teeth and googly eyes.
  • The latest on again, off again rumors are that New Mutants shit the bed and X-Men is a hot mess, and that both may be scrapped by Disney. Its both premature and hazy, and I don’t yet take them seriously.
  • Henry Cavill says he’d be down to play Bond, because of course he’s a tall white European and he wears a suit well. I’m OK with it.
  • Against all odds, Deadwood as a film has finally been greenlit, and actor schedules have been sorted out.
  • Stoned Alone. This is like that grocery store animated film from a few years ago. The concept is more stoney than the end result could even be, and I love them both for being things.

  • Iron Fist’s twitter has been posting episode names as battered storefront signage. .I’m really in love with this marketing concept.
  • In an interesting development, AMC and their legal representation have vetted Chris Hardwick and are bringing him back. They don’t outright state the claims against him by his ex are unfounded, but they are taking the risk of reinstating him. This not being the certain political world where gross people are doing gross things with impunity, but rather the world of sensitive entertainment business where creators have been sacked in recent days for old tweets.
  • I’m delighted that Denis Villeneuve is planning to shoot Dune as only the first half of the first book, rather than cramming everything in. More room to breathe and build the world with some elegance.
  • The moment the actress was cast, I knew there’d be a racist dust-up over Starfire. After the trailer, it was certain. Some pitiful trolls are on the attack, surprising precisely no one.

  • August 24th, AMC… let’s not let this one slip past us, pals.

Finally, I know it’s an important film in culture, etc etc but I’m just so in love with this shot of Tessa Thompson.

Clark Kenpo Karate – Robots Root 18 May 2018

I’m stoked on the new M:I trailer. I really want to see mustachio’d Caville wrecking a bathroom. And not in the way I usually wreck it.

This is happening IN THE FUTURE (because I’m in Jakarta) but also in the past (because I’ve been out of network for 2 days):

  • “Journey to Wakanda: a cross between the Jetsons and a 90s JET Magazine” Honest Trailer for Black Panther. Dead on. I just rewatched it on the plane. One thing that was more aggravating the second time around was the rubbery CGI. This BTS video of that aspect of production is really interesting. I just cant shake though how much the rubbery physics took me out of the immersion of those scenes. He never looked real doing his super movements. And frankly, I prefer the look of the practical work. Check this side by side:

  • I’d be so down with a USGrant biopic from Spielberg and DiCaprio. It seems tailor-made for them.
  • Someone, somewhere, greenlit a Pennyworth series, featuring Alfred and Thomas Wayne in the 60s. I mean.
  • Look, I don’t know if these sneaky snaps of S01 style black costume Daredevil are to be flashbacks or a return to the old school I loved so much, but either way, 10:1 that’s Bullseye he’s sparring with.
  • Interesting comments from Simon Pegg, that Tarantino’s ST script won’t be madcap, but more respectful of the franchise. That’s refreshing actually. I’d like it either way, probably, just as I loved Waititi’s good-natured abuse of the MCU. But I’m more interested in seeing what Tarantino would do when trying to play nicely with someone else’s toys, rather than just Warren Ellising the hell out of it, so to speak. Not to be confused with THIS project, also discussed this week…
  • While Agents of SHIELD’s relationship with the MCU has been controversial and one sided at best, I do like what I’m seeing: the final season is being delayed until after Avengers 4 comes out. No accident there…
  • It’s not entirely the first time I’ve read fan theories about The Dark Knight’s Joker having a military background, but FFS it’s Patton Oswalt so of course it’s such a well defined and executed theory I can’t even. I’m in! I also love, tangentially, the idea that some have proposed: that the SS’ Joker is a former Robin. Unrelated really, but there it is.
  • Zombieland 2 with the original cast??? It’s like a fever dream made real.
  • I was thinking on the plane, watching a film with a lot of scenes with little or no dialog (The Hostiles) how much I’d be interested in an action movie with no dialogue. There have been more than a few contemporary films over the years with no script, though I’ve wondered if and how there are screenwriter credits for such projects. Anyway, I was imagining a John Wick with no dialog. Damn. Anyway, they greenlit a Snake Eyes solo film. Maybe thats an opportunity. I mean, there’s no way Paramount would screw this up right?
  • Feige kinda sorta confirmed there’s a plan for Kamala Khan’s teen, Muslim Ms. Marvel in the MCU. Which is a good thing, because if Marvel doesnt use the whole Phase 4 thing to bring a younger, more diverse and interesting view of the marvel world to screen, then they are dumb as rocks. Space rocks.
  • holy crap, Villaneuve’s Dune is actually moving forward. STOKE!
  • This supposed plot-summary for Obi-Wan is yawnerrific. Can’t we just have space Lone Wolf and Cub already?
  • The coolest thing I’ve ever seen, Mayan pop culture monsters specific.
  • How dope is it that Nolan released a restored ‘original’ cut of 2001 complete with grain? I mean, what a project.

Hokay… back to watching the world burn…

Mount The Curb – Robots Root 9 May 2018

This is what the internet is for. STOP LYING, BATMAN.

Meanwhile.

  • I cant make heads or tails of what’s going on with TJ Miller’s implosion, but he won’t be in Deadpool 3, apparently. I do miss his energy in Silicon Valley, though. Not talking about behind the scenes value, just the finished products…
  • I’d be down with an all female Knights of Ren. This is like the rumored post-Avengers all-female supers team-up. You don’t even have to market it that overtly. Just DO it. Such as with Annihilation.
  • Let me just day, for the 333th time: I want a Bucky Barnes Cap. I mean, i NEEDS it. It was great in the comics.
  • So here’s the magical photo full of unicorn sparkles that apparently convinced Snyder to cast Cavill as Superman. And it’s… yeah… well, maybe I’m biased by how bulked he was later, but this isn’t thrilling.
  • I didn’t watch this AD S05 trailer, as I’m just going to dive right in and watch the show directly… but here you go.
  • The amount of misdirection in the Avengers: Infinity War trailers was peak. It does beg the question of how are they going to market the 4th Avengers movie… I’m of the mind they have all the actors do promo and press anyway, because come on… just don’t tell us HOW they come back. It’s like that hot mess of Superman/no Superman in the JL ads.
  • Super into what I’m seeing of Luke Cage S02. TOO much charisma. “They have to know we tried.”
  • As if the Infinity War situation couldn’t get more brutal.
  • Black Widow has gone through some hyperbolic number of director interviews, according to the supernet, so it must be true. More important subtext is the concept that they are looking for the right voice, not JUST an indie, or female, or controversial, voice. Hopefully, though, all those things in the end.
  • Sherlock Holmes 3 is coming, and I’m delighted.
  • It will be interesting to see how the original Wasp suit looks in motion. That helmet and the coat design were always something that barely made sense even in the comics.
  • Good to hear that Artemis actually has some old-school bite to it. The trailers were cut so as to look like every other post-John Wick project. Neat to hear it’s more 80s action movie…
  • Beautiful Last Starfighter art…
  • GUISE: MUTATIONS! ALIENS! DEATH FROM DUST! I mean, not like we ever went to the moon, but still.

OK, go to itunes now and check out or latest podcast which was released yesterday: Black Panther, Jumanji, insouciance…

You Mess with the Gadot You Get The W Gang Signs – Robots Root 24 Mar 2018

Despite resolving as the lowest moneymaker in the DCEU lineup thus far, fan interest remains strong enough to put Justice League at the top of weekly DVD/Blu-Ray sales, which isn’t surprising: the film may not have had staying power in theaters, but it’s a no-brainer for comic and action movie fans to have at home. Also, this image above.

Meanwhile, in space:

  • Lord and Miller are getting an Executive Producer credit on Han Solo, which is actually a positive thing: easy to imagine them having no credit at all, given how much of the film was reshot. Meanwhile, Ryan Reynolds is getting a writing credit on Deadpool 2, which shows how much his personal sense of humor has helped shape the character’s success, I think.
  • These unfinished shots of the aborted Justice League film costumes are pretty interesting in that Fringe Universe sort of way. I don’t hate them as much as others on the supernet, that’s for sure. I certainly struggle with redesigns of major franchise characters, but the Superman look here reminds me of something hovering between Rance’s redesign and mine. Don’t pay any attention to this Batman design, though. It’s atrocious.
  • The new Deadpool 2 trailer is super fun. Cool to see the X-Force team in action. Plus, a bonus Skarsgard I had no idea was involved.
  • Doug Liman’s Youtube RED series Impulse is basically a redo of his Jumper film… and actually looks compelling, to be honest. And I didn’t hate Jumper.
  • Noah Hawley has hit it out of the park with Legion, so I’m inclined to be optimistic about his incredibly challenging Doctor Doom film challenge, which appears to be challenging.
  • Astro City has been optioned for a live-action TV series, or series of series, as the case may be. Astro City was an inspiration to me in my youth as far as worldbuilding goes, so I’m down with it.
  • Less than one month to go before Westworld S02, and the viral is viral.
  • Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth reuniting in the Men in Black remake? Is this fan casting?! Excellent.
  • Pretty stellar ode to the stache here
  • In keeping with tradition, WB have announced a production schedule for a DCEU film without having the script or casting resolved. Batman, 2019.
  • It’s awesome that Elizabeth Olsen called out Empire on the savage photomanip of her face in these covers.

Thats all for today… off to drag Thor’s head around as I hunt for Infinity Stones in my disassembled bathroom subfloor.

A Cape Story – Robot’s Root 7 Feb 2018

The full trailer for Solo is looking really good. I was talking to Lung about this: I really hope they discouraged the actors from trying to do impressions of the older actors we know so well, and just focused on the character and, at most, mannerisms. The picture perfect Ewan McGregor Obi Wan didn’t do our expectations any justice. I really want this film to be more about mining a new story and less about mimicry. I’m super in.

  • Jumanji 2 is happening. And spoiler alert for an upcoming episode of Robot-Kraken: that’s a GOOD thing.
  • Here’s a first look at Rukia from the live-action Bleach film. Which reminds me, here’s a super sweet art print you might like:

OK it’s my last night in Indonesia, so I’s signing off to do more work. See you on the other side!

That Will Buff Out – Robot’s Root 28 Nov 2017

I am definitely the target market for a 1:1 scale mutilated and torched Vader helmet. Thanks!

That root, that sweet, sweet root (very minor JL spoilers below)

  • The interesting thing about this casting for Daredevil S03 isn’t the actor, who I’m sure is fine, but the idea that the role sheet alludes to Sin-Eater, which i would vastly prefer to Nuke being involved in a Born Again storyline.
  • I honestly feel like the superhero film mainstream acceptance has allowed smarter people than me to start slipping in solid cyberpunk projects without the snarky types noticing. Altered Carbon at Netflix??? Awesome.

  • What is even.
  • This video of Daisy Ridley being interviewed supposedly building a Lego Millennium Falcon is peak linkbait. It’s everywhere. Unfortunately, it fils for me in several ways.
    • Her mouth freaks me out
    • She laughs at herself a lot, but not in an endearing way
    • I like her in her roles more than as a human being interviewed, which isn’t often the case
    • She has a curious, if admirable in this oversexualized culture, obsession with stodgy, heavily-patterned clothing
    • And most importantly: she neither builds the Lego herself nor appears to really respect it. RESPECT THE LEGOS.
  • Do you know how much I approve of the concept of a Mendo Doctor Doom? 100% MINIMUM.
  • Lots of hyperbole over what does and doesn’t work in Justice League, and I’m saving my comments for the podcast overall. But one thing I thought I’d note here: some fans have clamored for a Zack Snyder cut to be released (which does not exist) and since he apparently ‘liked’ the petition, it has been taken to mean that it does, and should. I think he just liked the sentiment. Who wouldn’t? His son made comments about how the film was ruined by WB meddling and comedy, and I think that’s a valid position. It’s also a valid position to say that the original likely direction in Snydervision would be a disaster without the lighter tone pulled in by Whedon. The biggest legitimate criticism to be leveled against the finished project is that it feels, as you watch it, uneven enough that you detect when the hands change, like you’re watching two different films smashed together. For the record, I think the Whedon adjustments were a good idea. It is a messy landing, but it still lands as a more ‘superheroic’ film and frankly a lot of people were unhappy with the dark tone of the DCEU and wanted more of what they call the ‘Marvel’ vibe, but mean a more traditional, inspirational comic adventure experience. This is of course ironic as hell given that DC comics was traditionally about vanilla comic adventuring and marvel was borne from real-world, serious civic issues and told stories about relatable humans. That all said, a lot of what doesn’t work in the film is because of schedule, not an overarching ideological divide. They just needed more time. More time for finished FX, more time to properly pace and blend the two tones. Marvel movies can be both dark and comedic at the same time, both heroic and troubling. I’m looking at you, Russo Brothers. So, anyway, when I see all this Snyder vs. Whedon blamery over the film, it amuses me, because both voices are valid. And BTW I still like the darker DCEU tone just fine.
  • PS I also believe Joss Whedon is still actively working on a Batgirl film, and that the rumors of his dismissal are about as legit as the rumors of WB canceling the DCEU after JL… propaganda that came out over the weekend that didn’t do anyone any favors.
  • I like the look of some of the new designs, but the photoshoppery is killing me. Interns aren’t the answer to every chore. I do think we’re going to see alternate universe or post-reality manipulated versions of characters in A3 and A4 but we’ll have to wait and see.
  • Looking at these pics of a test suit unused in the final film (featuring a Kingdom Come style red-S) reminds me that I wish we saw a black suit in JL. Cavill teased it months back, and Zod’s look when he still had the cape was just B A D A S S S S S S S S.
  • Supposedly Gambit starts production in early 2018 after years of delays. Listen, I still think Channing Tatum is far better as a comedian than as a dramatic/action actor, though if they pull off the same sort of tone as he had in Logan Lucky, it could work. He’s risen in my book over the last year or so, and I’d LIKE to see this film happen, especially as a heist story, despite hating the character.

  • Now, Lizzy Caplan being involved is of course 99% why it could succeed. But hey. Bias.
  • I have a perverse love for seeing the voice actors recording dialog from cheesy animation.
  • Here’s some great cosplay (with all that fancy post work) of Ventress from the Clone Wars cartoon, a character on my to-draw list and one I’d love to have seen make it to film.

OK, that’s enough for today. Until next time, crush your darlings, and by darlings, I mean granpappy’s helmet!

Whose Soul Is This – Robots Root 28 July 2017

Let me just quickly say that the latest episode of Preacher was devastating. I don’t recall if this Cassidy detail was in the comic, but it was beautiful and tragic and so well done. Gilgun is owning this show. Moving on…

Robot’s Root!

  • Disenchantment, a new animated series from Matt Groening, is coming… at some point… and will be excellent. Postmodern, adult fantasy. I’ll take it!
  • Suburbicon is George Clooney doing his best Coen Brothers impression, but I’m fine with that.
  • This posits that Villenueve is on the shortlist for the next Bond film. While I loved the speculative rumor about Nolan taking on a future version of the franchise, I’d be very interested in a Villenueve version as well.
  • Here’s that infamous suit, which you can, and surely should, own today!
  • The latest in Deadwood non-news: now the script is in, and is excellent, and HBO… just needs to… get all cast together, get a budget worked out… you know, little things.
  • Everything you wanted to know about Batman’s ‘tactical suit’ in JL… including floating armor plates that don’t do anything, and straps to nowhere! It’s not that I don’t like it. It has strengths, too. But still, some odd choices.
  • Spencer Wilding has been discovered working on Han Solo. WHAT DOES IT MEAN.
  • Apparently, the next Arrested Development season will be a whodonit about the murder of Lucille. What a great concept.
  • Still struggle with all the humanoid, smooth armored new Jaegers, but the promo from SDCC looks pretty OK.
  • This is NOT the publicity that WB wanted for JL… sort of like all the other publicity they didn’t want. I love all the Cesar Romero Joker images on Twitter this week…
  • Having flown all week, I’ve been thinking a fair amount about this boondoggle after SDCC, in which United claimed travelers couldn’t check comics, and blamed the TSA, which turned it back around on United again. Can you imagine how upset those congoers must have been? I can.
  • “She’s a robocop with a weird robo-walk with a weakness for being snuck up on by dudes with tasers!” Honest Trailer for GitS. I love it.
