That Will Buff Out – Robot’s Root 28 Nov 2017

I am definitely the target market for a 1:1 scale mutilated and torched Vader helmet. Thanks!

That root, that sweet, sweet root (very minor JL spoilers below)

  • The interesting thing about this casting for Daredevil S03 isn’t the actor, who I’m sure is fine, but the idea that the role sheet alludes to Sin-Eater, which i would vastly prefer to Nuke being involved in a Born Again storyline.
  • I honestly feel like the superhero film mainstream acceptance has allowed smarter people than me to start slipping in solid cyberpunk projects without the snarky types noticing. Altered Carbon at Netflix??? Awesome.

  • What is even.
  • This video of Daisy Ridley being interviewed supposedly building a Lego Millennium Falcon is peak linkbait. It’s everywhere. Unfortunately, it fils for me in several ways.
    • Her mouth freaks me out
    • She laughs at herself a lot, but not in an endearing way
    • I like her in her roles more than as a human being interviewed, which isn’t often the case
    • She has a curious, if admirable in this oversexualized culture, obsession with stodgy, heavily-patterned clothing
    • And most importantly: she neither builds the Lego herself nor appears to really respect it. RESPECT THE LEGOS.
  • Do you know how much I approve of the concept of a Mendo Doctor Doom? 100% MINIMUM.
  • Lots of hyperbole over what does and doesn’t work in Justice League, and I’m saving my comments for the podcast overall. But one thing I thought I’d note here: some fans have clamored for a Zack Snyder cut to be released (which does not exist) and since he apparently ‘liked’ the petition, it has been taken to mean that it does, and should. I think he just liked the sentiment. Who wouldn’t? His son made comments about how the film was ruined by WB meddling and comedy, and I think that’s a valid position. It’s also a valid position to say that the original likely direction in Snydervision would be a disaster without the lighter tone pulled in by Whedon. The biggest legitimate criticism to be leveled against the finished project is that it feels, as you watch it, uneven enough that you detect when the hands change, like you’re watching two different films smashed together. For the record, I think the Whedon adjustments were a good idea. It is a messy landing, but it still lands as a more ‘superheroic’ film and frankly a lot of people were unhappy with the dark tone of the DCEU and wanted more of what they call the ‘Marvel’ vibe, but mean a more traditional, inspirational comic adventure experience. This is of course ironic as hell given that DC comics was traditionally about vanilla comic adventuring and marvel was borne from real-world, serious civic issues and told stories about relatable humans. That all said, a lot of what doesn’t work in the film is because of schedule, not an overarching ideological divide. They just needed more time. More time for finished FX, more time to properly pace and blend the two tones. Marvel movies can be both dark and comedic at the same time, both heroic and troubling. I’m looking at you, Russo Brothers. So, anyway, when I see all this Snyder vs. Whedon blamery over the film, it amuses me, because both voices are valid. And BTW I still like the darker DCEU tone just fine.
  • PS I also believe Joss Whedon is still actively working on a Batgirl film, and that the rumors of his dismissal are about as legit as the rumors of WB canceling the DCEU after JL… propaganda that came out over the weekend that didn’t do anyone any favors.
  • I like the look of some of the new designs, but the photoshoppery is killing me. Interns aren’t the answer to every chore. I do think we’re going to see alternate universe or post-reality manipulated versions of characters in A3 and A4 but we’ll have to wait and see.
  • Looking at these pics of a test suit unused in the final film (featuring a Kingdom Come style red-S) reminds me that I wish we saw a black suit in JL. Cavill teased it months back, and Zod’s look when he still had the cape was just B A D A S S S S S S S S.
  • Supposedly Gambit starts production in early 2018 after years of delays. Listen, I still think Channing Tatum is far better as a comedian than as a dramatic/action actor, though if they pull off the same sort of tone as he had in Logan Lucky, it could work. He’s risen in my book over the last year or so, and I’d LIKE to see this film happen, especially as a heist story, despite hating the character.

  • Now, Lizzy Caplan being involved is of course 99% why it could succeed. But hey. Bias.
  • I have a perverse love for seeing the voice actors recording dialog from cheesy animation.
  • Here’s some great cosplay (with all that fancy post work) of Ventress from the Clone Wars cartoon, a character on my to-draw list and one I’d love to have seen make it to film.

OK, that’s enough for today. Until next time, crush your darlings, and by darlings, I mean granpappy’s helmet!

More Than Meets the Industrial Designer – Robots Root 9 October 2017

Emerson Tung is an illustrator I’ve been following for years, and I’ve posted his work here before. I was struck by how he casually solves the modern Transformers movie problem: let the tech in the transforming bits be complicated if you need to to make it parse, but leave the body panels and such along, and anachronistic enough that you look at it and think ‘car robot’…

Meanwhile, that Robot’s Root:

  • I’m super down with the new Mondo art book… I love their poster work and this looks to be a nice collection.
  • The New Justice league trailer as a bit of plot in it, which is nice. I’m not sure I’d want to be the one to cover Bowie, but they tried. My buddy Ryan pointed out last night how confusing it is that Aquaman has a good ole boy slash surfer situation going on. I like it. But when he makes me THINK about it, it’s an interesting choice. I think they just let Momoa be Momoa just Momaing about. Here’s an international version with more ‘yee-a-UH!’ in it. Actually, no, less of it. But I like the theme music in the second trailer, and I wonder (optimistically) if it’s real.
  • I’m not convinced on the Mosaic project on HBO. A Choose-Your-Own-Adventure film by Soderbergh… eh. Feels like a video game.
  • You may recall that awesome short, Adam, done on the Unity engine backbone, by Neil Blomkamp? Here’s a sequel.
  • New X-Files S11 trailer has me shrugging. I realize, the last season was so random and disjointed (released in wrong broadcast order etc) and I had sort of forgotten about the hot mess they left it in. Anyway, all the ballyhoo from S10 was basically that their return to creature of the week format was the high point, and the serialized conspiracy eps the lowest. Now, I happen to love the conspiracy stuff… but I can’t imagine they targeted me specifically for S11… so huh.
  • The early reviews of Thor look very promising. Of course, that’s just about whether it will be good, not whether it will do well at the box office. I mean, Thor will. Blade Runner scores extremely high on Rotten Tomatoes and will be tanking (understandably) but I think Thor will have legs. They are very different animals. Speaking of, this is gorgeous.
  • I’m not sure that these photos are indicative of anything (other than that the poster doesn’t know the difference between an arm sleeve and a tattoo sleeve) but I do like the idea that for one reason or another Hawkeye will become Ronin. If that happens.
  • Ridley Scott says the next Alien film will be more about AI action than xenomorphs. I welcome it entirely. “I think the evolution of the Alien himself is nearly over, but what I was trying to do was transcend and move to another story, which would be taken over by A.I.’s. The world that the AI might create as a leader if he finds himself on a new planet. We have actually quite a big layout for the next one.”
  • Gore Verbinski MAY be on board for directing Gambit. That could be good or bad, depending on what you think of the director, and what he thinks of the material, because he’s pretty uneven in my opinion. I was so MEH on this project until I saw the synopsis. Now I want it to succeed.
  • Super bad luck on the Punisher release timing. I mean, the BAD LUCK is the horrible tragedy in Vegas, but I mean, tough time to release this project. Last time I posted about it they were delaying the screeners, but now the whole project may be pushed back. And probably should.
  • I’m a nerd, so I loved this: Hot Toys released a version of Boba Fett from the X-Mas Special. Believe it or not (believe it) I have this on my to-draw queue. HAHAHA. Now the ref material got 1,000x better.
  • If you liked Crank, you may be the target market for Happy on the Sy-Fy channel… I’m not sure where I stand on it. I like that it exists…
  • I wasn’t initially particularly interested in the Phillip K Dick anthology being cooked up. I don’t much like anthologies (though I make them out of necessity)… but having seen the promo, I’m intrigued…
  • Lastly, the Runaways full trailer still smacks of teen soap and doesn’t have the vibe I’m hoping for. EXCEPT. All the word of mouth is positive. So, maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised…

That’s all for today. Just sitting here pounding refresh on my alamo drafthouse page waiting for those Star Wars tickets…

PROBABLY the greatest detective in the world – Robots Root 8 June 17

Look, I’ll admit, I assumed, probably from leftover Grand Budapest fever dreaming, that Murder on the Orient Express would be a nutty surreal comedy. But I’m still in 133%. Plus, some would say Poirot’s mustache IS comedy. Not me, friends.

Thus, with suitable Kirby Krackle, it’s Robot’s Root!

  • These Hot Toys models are so eerily realistic. I just realized, not having been in the market for such things, that these have some sort of skeleton and a skin/covering system like a Realdoll(tm)… so basically a mini-Realdoll(tm) lacking, theoretically, certain anatomical features. Ugh, I’m creeped out. That said, impressive sculpt on this Amazonian Battle Chestpiece Diana.
  • The Buck Rogers plane is killing me.
  • I think I’d be fully into Ozark on Netflix anyway, but Jason Bateman totally elevates it.
  • I didn’t think I’d be interested in a Get Shorty remake. But the CAST!
  • This looks like a hot mess compilation of every other alien invasion action movie, but done on a 2008 iMac. BUT! I’m a glass half full (of broken glass) kind of guy: as about 1:35 in the trailer, one guy gets vaporized, and Lee pace runs over and catches the weapon the guy was holding and keeps firing it. It’s total Road Runner business. Revolting. Yes I said it.
  • Red Letter Media released the single best review of Covenant ever. And I say that, after recording thirteen hours of Coveant reviewage (rhymes with sewage) for Robot-Kraken. Best part: 5:30 into this majestic video.
  • Battlecat Mittens.
  • Lung pointed out the new Coco trailer, so I pulled up the Book of Life trailer for comparison. Loved the latter, will love the former. So much win all around. Except death. Death-win!
  • Hannah John-Kamen has been cast in a ‘key role’ in Ant-Man and Wasp. Curious… She’s best known for Killjoys, but she’s been in Game of Toles and Force Awakens… and will be in Ready Player One.
  • There’s ANOTHER Trek something something coming, with a serious pedigree (aka Wrath of Khan/Undiscovered Country) and supposedly NOT a rewrite of the new untitled film script for the Pineverse. I wonder if they are plotting out series’ or films set at different points in the timeline? Seems like it would be monumentally confusing to many viewers. I mean, Force Awakens vs. Rogue One was hard enough for mainstream fans to process. Anyway, courtesy of this technicolor yawn of a web page, which makes my eyes burn even as it is often right.
  • Jennifer Connelly is on board (see what I did) the Snowpiercer TV adaptation. Quite a catch for AMC, but while the film was a refreshing surprise in its quality (I haven’t seen the original) yet ANOTHER property makes me return to the basic question os who would build a ‘global’ train track and perpetual train during an ice apocalypse. It’s very Playstation.
  • Thandie Newton just described Han Solo as a ‘dope-a-franchise’ … I love her HARD.

And with that, I leave you to tend to your furious mustache…

ITEM: So, last week, right before I left for the mountains, CW inexplicably released THIS now infamous photo of Tyler Hoechlin in costume as the new Superman as featured on the Supergirl show. The internet cried for 10 hours straight. Admittedly, the backlash memes have been excellent. My favorite reference was: someone move the Kryptonite away from him. He came off as incredibly seedy looking, with a build and posture that said whatever’s the opposite of Superman, and a creepy gaze. I felt like I was seeing some alternate universe thing where one of the Falcones was wearing the suit. Also, my design sensibilities are outraged: loose belt, weird long underwear texture in the bodysuit, and those strange smooth ‘cape ends’ as they attach to the chest (which in other photos are all he wears, the cape being digital) with those gold trim pieces… along with the always-unpleasant stretched-out supercollar.

Reality is, TH can look ruggedly handsome and much more on-model, so I think this may be a fluke. But it takes me back to all the other marketing flubs I can’t grasp: how they could let it out the door. All the eyeballs on it. If its one of those ‘all the designers and marketing folks said it sucked but the executive insisted’ things, I hope it comes to light. The show has shown pretty consistently good costuming, as far as I can tell, and good casting choices… so who knows. But wow, way to FAIL THE WEEK AFTER SDCC.

Image
ITEM: We talked about all the SDCC stuff in our latest Robot-Kraken podcast due for release later this week, but one of the things I thought strange about Kong Island, despite the trailer being full of many cool images (including this) is that the money shot for the poster is a direct riff on Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla. Now, Kris noted that, especially with the larger Kong, they HAVE to be angling for a monster mash film… I just feel sort of surprised at the blatant nod.

ITEM: While I 100% loath this campaign Marvel has been doing where they photoshop the design onto the actor posing or waling around (not just Marvel, i see it by HBO too) … the shirt itself cracked me up.

That’s all for now. Cuddle thy chestbusters in peace…

I know we talked about the new trailer in the other post, but this is one of my favorite details…

In other news…

1. Well At Least There’s That: I don’t know if the first Lonely Island film, Popstar, will be funny. I can’t tell anymore. It doesn’t really feel funny. And it’s a strange choice, when Entourage ate itself with seriousness and ended up being a farce. But I will say: any movie with Pink as a unicorn tamer is at least a thing that is happening. A Perdment, as we say at Robot-Kraken.

3. Ready Player Three: A long-awaited upgrade to the PS4 has just launched, for free, that allows users to remotely play off of their console from other devices in the same network. This is an example of the kind of feature that previously would have held no value for me, and now sounds amazing. The private access to my living room TV is quite limited, and the kids don’t get access to games at their age by my lovely wife’s request… and she’s watching shows most nights. So that all means that gaming for me is relegated to a night a week I set aside, after everyone is in bed. Now, if I want, I can hop on the PS4 from the Cloffice and have at it.
Probably wont.
Arting to be done.
But I COULD.
