Red Markers Turning Green – Robots Root 11 October 2018

$15M for Black Widow? Good work, Scarlet Johansson. Along with the news that Brie Larson signed on for seven films, I’m optimistic we’ll be seeing a lot of powerful Marvel women on screen in the next several years.

Meanwhile, in space:

  • James Bond “will never be a woman…” because… REASONS. Le sigh.
  • If nothing else, Ruby Rose’s Batwoman is about as close to comics continuity as we’ve seen in one of these projects.
  • The screenwriter of Kraven insists Spider-Man will be in his film (because, again, how can he not; see Venom) and Morbius continues to lumber along in pre-production… Sony is trying to Phase IV it before having Phase I-III, ha.
  • “ballistic descent” is pretty much how I describe Lung’s riding style…
  • The Secret Six, an evolution of Suicide Squad (briefly Villains United) is headed to TV in some form or another… that does not fill me with optimism… if it were heading to cable, then maybe, but this is CBS…
  • More Glass. I need to get on Split, post-haste. I didn’t watch this trailer…
  • Matthew Mcconoughey has joined Guy Ritchie’s latest gang caper, and thats good news as far as I’m concerned.
  • Disney you done erred.
  • I assumed Janet Van Dyne was coming back TOUCHED… and was surprised they didn’t broadcast more uncertainty about it. Maybe she will be.
  • God Country has been optioned for live action. Stoked! I’ve talked with one of the creative team and it sounds very promising.
  • When I read that there was to be a Fantasy Island remake, the FIRST thing I thought was: those won’t be fantasies… they’ll be nightmares. And sure enough, I think that’s what they are doing. Dave Bautista and Michael Pena are attached. With that cast, I don’t know if it’s going to be a dark comedy or just… dark.
  • Dwayne Johnson is doing League of Extraordinary Gentlemen for Netflix. No, wait… John Henry and the Statesmen. Same difference.
  • The man that killed Neil Blomkamp’s Alien film in his over-reaching declaration that he would somehow make 33 more Aliens films despite being 80+ … is now working in TV too, soooo…..
  • Months from now, we’ll be talking about Knives Out like EVERY DAY. I can feel it.

That’s all for today! If you haven’t yet, download and listen to the latest episode of Robot-Kraken, and if you are willing, please subscribe, rate, and review on iTunes so we can get some exposure thanks to their dubious algorithm…!

Freaky Tikis and Other Things – Robots Root 22 Aug 2018

First up: Check out Deeply Dapper’s latest Kickstarter, for all of your Tiki Halloween needs! Pretty awesome goodies!

:::

Meanwhile, under the sea:

  • Well, that’s unfortunate to hear: Happytime Murders may not live up to its potential.
  • Seems legit. Nice move, Kalishnikov! Very Cyberpunk 2012 of you.
  • The blurb for an upcoming comic tie-in raises more question than it answers, regarding the timeline of Captain Marvel and other Phase IV films.
  • Danny Boyle is out on Bond 25. I’m kind of disappointed. I’m not SURPRISED, but disappointed.

  • So, uh, I don’t watch the Arrowverse shows… and I know the takeaway here is supposed to be the ‘oh look, Batwoman red symbol in the sky!’ but didn’t Flash’s new helmet enlarge and become weirdly proportioned?

  • Oh look: Punisher finally looking more Punisher-like.
  • What happened with Tran after The Last Jedi was deplorable, but damn, I love how she’s come back roarin‘.
  • Galaxy Quest 2 is on hold, (the show) but not for the obvious reasons plaguing productions… political ones regarding leadership shuffles in the wake of some toxic behavior at the executive level. Here’s hoping…

Thats Like Your Opinion Man – Robots Root 21 August 2018

That thing you need that you didn’t know you needed but now can’t haz because it’s sold out. But WANT.

Meanwhile, in space:

  • That Unity engine robot design used for Adam and the NB short film work was leaked walking around in a driveway… it was a lighting study, but still, people got sufficiently triggered. TO THE BUNKERS!
  • It seems like an eternity ago (but not an Eternity, or Ego) that Mark Ruffalo spoiled Infinity War. Ha.
  • When Miller was still attached to Deadpool 2, he planned a post-credits scene with the cast of the collapsed FF movie. As a person who actually liked some of that project, I wouldn’t have minded this, thought it would have played for laughs mocking them, which I get. Anyway, about the costume redesigns. Not bad, actually. Better than in their own film! I don’t like how lumpy and meaty the neck parts are, but otherwise.
  • Here we have a scene with Daredevil stalking a copycat… meanwhile, on the same day, Gotham pics surfaced showing the stupid roided out punks from the Dark Knight comic. Coincidence? I THINK NOT! Everything is Dark Knight, and Dark Knight is everything.
  • John August has created a list for people to populate, of movies not available digitally… he’s hoping to spin this into a mechanism to get some of these released. Great idea.
  • I really want to see a trailer for I Am Mother. It IS an odd observation that Swank appears to be wearing the same outfit as Winstead in 10 Cloverfield Lane… anyway, the titular bot was seen at SDCC and looked amazing. WETArrific.
  • About time Ironheart got a different look. Really didn’t like that she was just wearing an Iron Man armor around.
  • I love how much Idris Elba has been trolling fans about the James Bond thing. He wins either way.
  • Finally, a great primer on what is, and isn’t true kung-fu in film, and how it doesn’t really pay to value one over another.

He Even Paid for That Suit – Robots Root 30 July 2018

As rumors of the Batman solo film increasingly draw comparisons to Batman: Year One, I grow more and more cautiously optimistic. I want facking dark gray under-armor, combat boots, hand stitched cowl and cape, an army/navy surplus belt, flash bangs and sharpened steel knives. And I want failure. [Art by the One Dave Johnson ]

Meanwhile…

  • Honest Trailer for Ready Player One is honest.
  • Captain America’s proposed cameo in Ant-Man and Wasp would have actually been pretty good. Though I agree with the choice to exclude it. Not necessary.
  • The logic here is pretty screwy. Them lost all sense.
  • Reading the creators wax optimistic about future Venom films, I’m reminded of a logical but problematic detail: in reports from SDCC it was noted that Venom doesn’t have the chest symbol. Makes sense, in an origin without a Spider-Man connection. Yet, without that white spider across the chest, this will just be a big rubbery black blob with teeth and googly eyes.
  • The latest on again, off again rumors are that New Mutants shit the bed and X-Men is a hot mess, and that both may be scrapped by Disney. Its both premature and hazy, and I don’t yet take them seriously.
  • Henry Cavill says he’d be down to play Bond, because of course he’s a tall white European and he wears a suit well. I’m OK with it.
  • Against all odds, Deadwood as a film has finally been greenlit, and actor schedules have been sorted out.
  • Stoned Alone. This is like that grocery store animated film from a few years ago. The concept is more stoney than the end result could even be, and I love them both for being things.

  • Iron Fist’s twitter has been posting episode names as battered storefront signage. .I’m really in love with this marketing concept.
  • In an interesting development, AMC and their legal representation have vetted Chris Hardwick and are bringing him back. They don’t outright state the claims against him by his ex are unfounded, but they are taking the risk of reinstating him. This not being the certain political world where gross people are doing gross things with impunity, but rather the world of sensitive entertainment business where creators have been sacked in recent days for old tweets.
  • I’m delighted that Denis Villeneuve is planning to shoot Dune as only the first half of the first book, rather than cramming everything in. More room to breathe and build the world with some elegance.
  • The moment the actress was cast, I knew there’d be a racist dust-up over Starfire. After the trailer, it was certain. Some pitiful trolls are on the attack, surprising precisely no one.

  • August 24th, AMC… let’s not let this one slip past us, pals.

Finally, I know it’s an important film in culture, etc etc but I’m just so in love with this shot of Tessa Thompson.

Alfred Has the Moves – Robots Root 9 July 2018

Look, I’ve watched this about 33 times and it’s not old yet. It’s amazing. AMAZING.

Meanwhile, for science:

and more (with jacket)

Doomed Mos Eisley movie

More grim and gritty Robin

How Infinity War should have ended.

Why a Baby Driver sequel?

Who is Captain America’s costume designer?

Tom Hardy as the next Bond?

Early concept art for War Machine and Black Widow

Here’s a Call of Cthulu game review. If you read it, you’ll start smelling colors, so beware!

MIA’s Paper Planes supercut with MUSKETS instead of gunfire. It’s a nearly 13 minute video, so high concept and pretty great. You don’t have to watch it. Just enjoy that it exists. Two minutes in and it wasn’t even done with the first volley in the main refrain, because the musket rate of fire is like 30s. The video is intercut with some Austrian 18th century recreationist group on a parapet somewhere. Hilarious. I appreciate.

Anime style fanarts of popular 80s action/SF movies activated!

7,000 degrees Kelvin. ha! Also I love both of those, though i’ve never tried them together…

Merpeople Attackeds! WOCHOWT, guy from Masterpiece Theater’s Victoria~

I just can’t wrap my head around the idea that there hasn’t been a live-action Gundam yet. Seems the technology is ready.

Thats all for now! Back to melting alive while your eyeballs implode!

Ah Taek Pleashuh in othah people’s HEAD SHOTS – Robot’s Root 1 June 2018

Morrissey has been officially tapped to direct Bond 25! I mean Danny Boyle. More interesting, even, is that he’s bringing his writing partner with him. This could be an intriguing project…

  • Surprising precisely no one, the Silver Sable/ Black Cat film from Sony with no tie in to the character that defines their existence, is very likely dead.
  • However, Legion has been greenlit for a third season! Don’t lose your nerve, Fox. I’m watching you.
  • Now you too (can’t really) have a TARS of your own.
  • Good lord! Lung turned me onto this DEEP study into the symbolism of Fury Road. I just thought it looked cool.
  • Body Bags, Jason Pearson’s old indie project (which I loved) is finally happening as a film from the Wickosphere… with Dave Bautista as Mack. That it’s called ‘Dogtown’ rather than Body Bags’ makes me wonder if we’re going to see it pull away from the randomness of the aesthetics of the book, including Mack’s mask and Panda’s busting at the seams cheerleader outfit and fro.
  • I’m not sure if it will pan out as much as it could via the premise, but Peppermint is at least notable in that I’m all for female led revenge action movies to offset all the male ones. It will be interesting to see if the ‘fridging’ talk will change now that it is the husband and daughter being killed as a plot device.
  • This animatronic achievement may or may not haunt your dreams, but it feels closer to Ghost in the Shell geishas than Pirates of the Caribbean drunk robots…
  • Sesame Street already lost their lawsuit. I love it.
  • The Sisters Brothers… could be a thing…
  • Han Solo Spoiler Section below…

Keep going…

  • I’d have liked to have seen Dryden Vos look like the second concept piece below. Interesting to read that he was one of the catlike designs when Michael Williams (Wire) did his scenes, but was changed to humanoid when Bettany came in… so I wonder why the physical design change for a mocap performance which it was originally. Make no mistake, I think Bettany was awesome. And apparently those weren’t scars, but tissue ridges that flared as hsi blood pressure rised, him not apparently being a scarred human at all… still, anyway, interesting.
  • Regarding these Falcon concepts, I like #12 and #23 because I wanted to see the pincer tip used as a cargo or device grabby bit… the pointy tip was never really explained. I also like #29 because it uses those side parts to siggest there were one more engines or… something… there.

Isle of Take My Money Now – Robots Root 15 Mar 2018

Isle of Dogs, 8 days and counting. CANNOT. BREATHE.

  • Jon Hamm joined Pale Blue Dot with Natalie Portman. I love it!
  • Or… maybe Deadpool 2 reshoots are because people want MORE of all the THINGS!
  • this is Super Monster Wolf and its real. Because Japan.

  • “Beep Bloop Bloam… Goodbye to your home” Another great bad lip reading song for The Star War.
  • Fan reaction to Ghostbusters wasn’t awesome, but Paul Feig has doubled down with Powderkeg.
  • I loved the last round of posters, cribbed though they may have been, but on these, they maintain the great weirdly prescient retro colorscheme, and also the drawn aspect of it… very nice.
  • Perfect looks sufficiently beautiful and unnerving. I’m in.
  • This Mondo series celebrating Batman:the Animated Series is wonderful. My favorite was the Cat and the Claw…
  • Danny Boyle has been officially revealed as the director of the final Daniel Craig-based Bond film… by Danny Boyle.
  • I still crave more info about this Russo + Keannu Reeves superhero project.
  • Here’s some interesting (and awesome) casting on Luke Cage S02 with some direct referencing to the storylines of Punisher, at least in the comics.
  • I will always require more Angela Bassett… though really, I don’t think, in all seriousness, you can top Michael B Jordan.

Luke Stargruber – Robots Root 21 Feb 2018

Watch out for broken space glass! It’s Robots Root!

  • Welp. I think they may be getting my ill-gotten gains.
  • I love this sort of thing: half-remembered Star Wars
  • FINALLY sane minds prevail on those white eyes… Just imagine if the last two Batmen had them…
  • Jock’s Mondo poster for Empire is finally available, and it is as glorious as I hoped. His rejected piece is just as good.
  • As a kid that played Lazer Tag, among other games like it, I really like the concept applied to Harry Potter wands.
  • New Legion season starts in March. This is both hot and terrifying. As usual. Aubrey Plaza.
  • Danny Boyle directing Bond? Well. Possibly a good thing. Not as good as a Nolan version though, surely.
  • The teaser for the new Netflix series reboot for Lost in Space looks like a reimagining and a completely different direction, and I quite like it. Great cast too. Design work looks solid so far. CANT WAIT TO SEE THE BOT.

  • According to the production crew, this is a close reference on the film version of Shazam/Captain Marvel’s costume.
  • I still have no faith in the Krypton series, but how sad is it that their version of Braniac looks better formed and designed than any villain in the DCEU?

That’s all for now. Back to the ventilation system…

Whose Soul Is This – Robots Root 28 July 2017

Let me just quickly say that the latest episode of Preacher was devastating. I don’t recall if this Cassidy detail was in the comic, but it was beautiful and tragic and so well done. Gilgun is owning this show. Moving on…

Robot’s Root!

  • Disenchantment, a new animated series from Matt Groening, is coming… at some point… and will be excellent. Postmodern, adult fantasy. I’ll take it!
  • Suburbicon is George Clooney doing his best Coen Brothers impression, but I’m fine with that.
  • This posits that Villenueve is on the shortlist for the next Bond film. While I loved the speculative rumor about Nolan taking on a future version of the franchise, I’d be very interested in a Villenueve version as well.
  • Here’s that infamous suit, which you can, and surely should, own today!
  • The latest in Deadwood non-news: now the script is in, and is excellent, and HBO… just needs to… get all cast together, get a budget worked out… you know, little things.
  • Everything you wanted to know about Batman’s ‘tactical suit’ in JL… including floating armor plates that don’t do anything, and straps to nowhere! It’s not that I don’t like it. It has strengths, too. But still, some odd choices.
  • Spencer Wilding has been discovered working on Han Solo. WHAT DOES IT MEAN.
  • Apparently, the next Arrested Development season will be a whodonit about the murder of Lucille. What a great concept.
  • Still struggle with all the humanoid, smooth armored new Jaegers, but the promo from SDCC looks pretty OK.
  • This is NOT the publicity that WB wanted for JL… sort of like all the other publicity they didn’t want. I love all the Cesar Romero Joker images on Twitter this week…
  • Having flown all week, I’ve been thinking a fair amount about this boondoggle after SDCC, in which United claimed travelers couldn’t check comics, and blamed the TSA, which turned it back around on United again. Can you imagine how upset those congoers must have been? I can.
  • “She’s a robocop with a weird robo-walk with a weakness for being snuck up on by dudes with tasers!” Honest Trailer for GitS. I love it.

Just a Flesh Wound – 25 April 2017

I didn’t watch the first bridging minifilm for Alien: Covenant, but I did watch this one. I think it’s relevant.

:::

Meanwhile, in space, this Robot’s Root is happening…

  • Best comment ever, regarding that trident there. Yes, I know the 5 point weapon has been in the comics before. Your argument is invalid.
  • I’m stoked at the Robotech resurgence. And an artist I follow, Marco Turini, was tapped to handle art chores on the new comic by Brian Wood. What a cool team-up! My concern is that they will mimic the tone and style of the anime, rather than do a grittier take that suits their own styles. If left to their own devices it would look a lot more like what Paul Pope did with Batman 100. Turini has a detailed, inky thing going on.
  • These 16th c. redesign cosplays are OUT OF CONTROL

  • The highlight of Iron Fist continues to be Jessica Henwick, who I’ve tried to fantasy-cast as pretty much anyone and everyone on the podcast.
  • Great prohibition era photos, feeling right out of the Coen Brothers playbook… but you can tell, as you go through them, that they were staged, even at the time. Still cool.
  • Spoilers if you didn’t listen to our Robot Kraken podcast review of Powerless, or watch it your own self: no longer an option.
  • Is Once Upon a Time in Venice a good bad movie, a bad bad movie, or just the worst example of trailer editing in the history of the form? I want it to be good.
  • DC just announced a Teen Titans live-action series launch. Which is great for DC fans. However they are using it to launch a streaming service, showing they learned nothing from Paramount.
  • I love James Bond. Which is Kingsman, these days. Just look at it. LOOK AT IT.
  • I also didnt watch Split, but I did learn about the stunt ending, tying it to Unbreakable (sorry, common knowledge now) and saw the awesome film recap here from Earthling Cinema. Anyway, M. Knight Toleyou announced Glass, the third film, will bring them all together. I look forward to it.
  • When Zoe Saldana says she wants to be in Dune, LET HER.
  • Shane Black confirms Predator will use practical FX. Music to my ears. And by eyes. Or something.

That’s all for now! Wipe your eyeballs down and find your center.
