You Wouldnt Like Me When I’m Angry – 28 Sept 2018

My first three reactions, from my first three viewings, of Dark Phoenix’s trailer were not great. But there’s more optimism out there in the fan reaction world than i anticipated. Plenty of doubt, too. I suspect, and frankly hope, that the males talking about Jean instead of showing much of anything about her manifestation is because they’re trying to keep as much of her actual vibe secret as long as possible. I hold out faint hope for a proper Dark Phoenix costume, too. It’s one of the best in the comics. Anyway, the trailer was mild. I do appreciate them showing us very little of the external antagonist, who I suspect is a hybrid of the Sh’iar and Mastermind. They kept the focus as a guilty family secret type situation. The best part was the most subtle: the faint Phoenix Fire image in the logo animation at the end, thus:

Meanwhile, in space, this may be happening right now:

  • I’m well into Marvel. I’m a legit zombie. But I could never get behind Eternals. I mean, I could get behind Selene maybe. But that aside, I mainly used them as post-Celestial cannon fodder in the Marvel RPG. But hey, Kirby is Kirby, and if it makes for a good movie, I’ll be there.
  • I can’t speak for the actress playing Black Canary, as I do not have any familiarity with her, but I’m enjoying the idea of Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress in Birds of Prey. Where’s the photomanips?!

  • Also, I would LOVE Sharlto Copley as a Black Mask, if that happened.
  • An interesting point here about Han Solo’s cinematic failings, one that we were aware of in general, but it’s easy to overlook in the wake of fanboy raging: Disney dumped it into theaters two weeks after INFINITY WAR, and gave it minuscule marketing breathing room by Star Wars standards. Imagine if Han Solo came out in the December slot… not buried under the biggest Marvel film ever and still too hot to touch after the Last Jedi debates. And there’s this. And also this. But anyway, I’m a fan, and I’m looking forward to these deleted scenes
  • Do what you have to do. Make the best Hellboy that can ever be?

  • Finally, the first pic from The Boys. I’m down! It’s neat how much most of the cast looks like their comics versions and then Urban is just grizzly.
  • Nic Pizzolatto? Ben Foster? Noir grime? SO DOWN.
  • I know I’m the target age for this movie audience, but this was great.
  • I dunno. The classic comics colors on Aquaman are OK, but the gold armor is even better… hey, I’m just there for the vomiting.

  • I present: the Hybridizer. I mean, I did it for the old timey. But you do you.
  • Well, this is dope. Do the tapes fly out and attack you in Whole Foods?
  • The thing about the Venom movie is… I mean… just do THIS. Quit with the dancing around it.
  • This is beautiful and terrible. Boom!

And with that, I’m off into the redwoods to camp for the weekend, doing THIS pretty much non stop.

The Podcast That Forgot What it’s Like to Fear Death – Robots Root 6 Dec 2017

I WANT ALTERED CARBON IN MY FACE ASAP

Meanwhile…

Somewhere in space… it’s Robot’s Root:

  • Once again, Disney and Fox are “thisclose” to the deal… so, what do you think? Will Disney fold in the X-Men and FF properties as part of the likely multiverse thing coming after Infinity War?

  • Free Deadpool tattoos. What could go wrong? I’ll take free Negasonic tattoos though. And by free Negasonic tattoos, I mean applying tattoos onto what is already a peak hawt package. ZING!
  • I’d like all these Star Wars jackets a lot more if they didn’t have rebel logos or whatever on them. Less literal. Also, half this price.
  • Watch this GIF… do you hear it? I do.
  • It’s true: Nolan benefitted from a less compressed time of supers film production. He had a film in between each Batman film, and he told a story he cared about, largely or entirely without studio interference. However, he also benefitted from being Christopher Nolan in the first place. There’s a vision.
  • Interesting Stranger Things theory: is the demogorgon part of Eleven’s manifestation? I doubt it, given the events of S02… but still, good effort.
  • Here’s some cool concept art for Valkyrie from Andy park!
  • For Aeon-Flux fans, you can now watch the entire Liquid Television series streamed to your eyeballs like an errant fly.
  • As I’ve said on the pod, an AI vs AI vs AI direction in the Alien franchise sounds good to me. It just doesn’t make much more sense as a PREQUEL.
  • Batman almost had a shitty speeder bike in Justice League. Just look. Plus, somewhere, out there, there’s footage of the black Superman costume. I can’t wait until it surfaces.
  • Some potential Iron Fist S02 villain hints here in the casting notes… I mean, I could go either way, now that the showrunner has changed. Alice Eve was just cast as well…
  • NINJA TREE CLAWS
  • Margot Robbie is doing some sort of Harley Quinn something or other. I mean, who’s to say.
  • This Batman ninja business is the BUSINESS.
  • ADAM part 3 is no online. Hot damn.
  • Hellboy has a release date, and it’s too far away. Maybe, given what happened when they rushed JL, that’s OK.
  • Disney cast Mulan, and didn’t cock it up, even.
  • Historical nightmare fuel.
  • In an era of perpetual reboots, this plea from Alex Proyas against the Crow remake was pretty profound. Of course I’m of the age to have an emotional connection to that first film, too.
  • I haven’t watched any Black Mirror so far, but I might start

  • New images from next year’s Dark Phoenix surprise the hell out of me. My expectations were so low. This early look of Jean Grey transforming, even if its just stylized for these images… they’re really great. I like the cracking apart of her flesh. Not strictly consumed by fire, but also separating into component atoms. Wow. I also like the apparent change in concept for the Phoenix Force, and that the X-Men are popular, with Xavier being reckless in his deployment of the team beyond their capability, the hubris and overconfidence implied.
  • Finally, I’ve mentioned a few times that I’ve been watching, and enjoying, Runaways. We’ll be talking about that soon, but in the meantime, a good article about how the Hulu production makes good use of their established budget to put together FX for the¬†deinonychus, Old Lace, featured¬†in the show. It’s a good example of a production not overreaching beyond their budget, and spending the money wisely.

That Michael B Jordan would join Black Panther is not surprising, given his relationship with the director… what WILL be interesting is: what character? You don’t waste Jordan on a throwaway villain. I don’t know enough about Black Panther continuity.

Word on the street, and by street, I mean carefully orchestrated rumor buzz, is that the X-Files crew is close to sorting out a way to do another season. Just imagine, this time more episodes less crushed together with less hot mess and more fun! Maybe?

I’m slowly working my way through the Prequels with the kids. I still have many issues with them, and not just plot, dialogue, acting, direction, sound FX… I run hot and cold on the art direction. I can’t fathom the choice to put uninteresting Droid armies up against uninteresting other armies on a grassy field in broad daylight. There are many vehicle designs I dislike. BUT. One thing that continues to stand out is how much I love the the imagery associated with the elected monarchy (?) of Naboo. The buildings, clustered over waterfalls, the beautiful clothes, the neat hair, the tall civic building interiors… even the chromy starships. So, credit where its due.

Well, Gareth Edwards just dumped Godzilla 2… which doesn’t bode well. Supposedly amicable, supposedly wants to focus on Rogue One and then his smaller projects, all of which I can dig. But his direction, and DP choice, sort of made Godzilla work for me in the first place. I need to re-watch it, while not on a plane to Singapore with 10 rums in me.

Supposedly Snoke is not the reincarnated Plagueis, is this producer tweet is to be believed. I don’t needhim to be related to any other character, frankly, but some in the fan community will be frustrated. So many hours of fan theorizing, in the dumps! UNLESS, it’s another bait and switch. Perhaps Plagueis was a reincarnation of SNOKE, so it’s an artful dodge! But it isn’t.

Rian Gonzales is a wonderful watercolorist. I’ve been following her work for some time. I like that her pieces are playful, pretty and not particularly suggestive, but at the same time, spicy. You bring your own spice! As someone who has done a fair amount of 000 brush work over the years, I’m always interested in micro-painting. This is very impressive stuff.
