Cackling in 3 Frames Per Second – Robots Root 30 June 2018

Now you too can have a laughing Prince Adam figure of your very own. Memetic!

I’m done with my Spring conventions, and now in Washington on a short vacation with the younglings. Here’s a blast of interesting somethings over the last few weeks!

  • Wonder Woman + George Orwell? You decide!
  • Everyone’s talking about that Black Manta helmet, but I’m all about Orm’s sweet hairstyle.
  • Apologists and recontextualists aside, these comments nauseated me.
  • If nothing else, Red Notice sure has an eye-catching cast.
  • You too can build an Alexa-enabled L3-37. But… should you?
  • Preacher 3 is only a week away!
  • Incredibles 2 was a hoot… and the weekend box office sure seems to indicate people realized it. It does look decidedly familiar… by design.
  • Here’s a great video of Andy Serkis discussing mocap’s evolution
  • Here’s an interesting article positing that Shazam should be the path to the future of the DCEU.
  • As someone who works in a small, pressure-cooker environment without HR and with unconventional, lets say, communication from time to time, I’ve been following the discussion on workplace abuse in Hollywood (a mechanism for talking about it not in Hollywood, of course. ie. the real world)… the sexual abuse and sexual politics are very obviously evil, but the verbal abuse has been something that creators in the entertainment industry have been forgiven for (as long as they are ‘successful’ and ‘auteurs’, my emphasis… on the one hand, some people need to be more prepared and clear about the hostile environments they are getting into, and on the other hand, people should be respectful, or there should be consequences. Interesting debate.
  • Everyone’s laughing about how they isolated Iron Fist knowingly. I just loved that they included Colleen Wing!

More to come!

Shes Bloody Hot Mate – Robots Root 12 April 2018

Milla Jovovich posted this photo… of her own character… the other day, and the Mignola side of the interwebs screamed. I know I did. Can’t wait.

Meanwhile, in space:

  • Literally: Expanse S03 e01 aired last night, but us streaming types have to wait until FRIDAY FFS, throwing off our planned Robot-Kraken Podcast recording agenda for tonight. But if you need a refresher, here’s a primer. Better yet, quickly go read ALL THE BOOKS. Then watch all the eps.
  • I present: Icky Mouse, by Dann Matthews. Amazing.
  • Thinking about the classic X-Men/Teen Titans crossover from my youth, while I agree that it is still surprising that the two rival companies collaborated while both properties were at their peak, thinking about it now, I would offer that this was back when the company rivalry was good natured, and hadn’t turned vitriolic as it did in the 90s and beyond… back then, if readers knew there would be Justice League and Avengers movies out within a year of each other, they’d be collectively ecstatic. I know I would have. Today fans of one property actively try and sink the movie of the other. It’s unreal. The other aspect of this that I have a different perspective on today is that creators move from company to company. At the time, the idea that Claremont was able to write, and Simonson draw, the DC characters effectively seemed exotic. In today’s market, however, creators sometimes work at both shops, or move from one to another. It’s just story. Anyway, blast from the past…
  • A Bourne prequel called Treadstone is in development. I mean… why even call it Bourne. It could be any black ops agency.
  • You like movie sequels? Atomic Blonde has one cooking. You like sequels for your sequels? Then Jumanji has one… and the Rock is generally cooking something. You like sequels for your TV shows? Jessica Jones has one too!
  • Predator has undergone extensive reshoots for the third act. I keep saying this, but today significant reshoots are common on most major productions, and do not necessarily signify problems. We want the best film possible, after all.
  • Jeff Wadlow had a script treatment for He-Man that I have to say, I agree with generally. I think this film wants to be nostalgic and referential and fun, not a grim redesign.
  • Mulan is getting serious. Donnie Yen! Jet Li and Gong Li! I want to go to there.
  • David Leitch is apparently on board for the Fast and Furious spin-off. All I can say on that point is that he might be too good for it, but it might elevate the property.
  • What is EVEN with the Stan Lee situation?! It gets more and more surreal by the day.
  • Like tabletop games? Like Starfleet Battles and BSG? Here’s everything in one package for you. I mean, probably not one package. From what I’ve seen of the recent Star Wars tabletop stuff, you have to buy a million different expensive expansion packs and individual ships. Obviously I haven’t done table top gaming in years, but it was always that way. Which is all to say, my enthusiasm for this project will be directly related to how many pieces are included in the basic kit.
  • Jeff Goldblum noises.
  • They taught an AI to make its own Flintstones animatics. This can’t be good. I mean, I don’t know how its not good, but it still feels useful to SKYNET. Somehow.
  • Here’s a new Incredibles 2 trailer… filled with all the things.

Finally, look what ole Deeply Dapper found in Fallout 4:

The Cavalcade of Helmetless Heroes – Robots Root 9 Mar 2018

Herewith, witness the Calvacade of Helmetless Heroes FFS!

Meanwhile, in space, this may be happening:

  • Honest Trailers does He-Man
  • My favorite How to Dad video yet.
  • I kinda like this promo pic for Daredevil S03… done by Joe Q, even. I’ ve always been a fan of lettering pushed into the environment of the piece.
  • I have to agree: if we couldn’t have an actually FORMIDABLE foes in Phasma, at least give her this scene to show her ruthlessness…
  • Now here’s the full trailer for Prospect, which still adorns my desktop as a background screen…
  • Killmonger concept art shows that the final version was the best choice. I still wish he kept the mask on the whole time… it was awesome.
  • More neural net fun, this time with sentence gradients.
  • Again, not a horror fan, but Endless looks pretty interesting. Lovecraftian doomsday cult business. Sure!
  • Dafne Keen is on board the new big budget take on His Dark Materials… I think they are abandoning the Golden Compass released prior…
  • Krysten Ritter says no Defenders S02 was planned, nor does one look likely. Depending on how you felt about S01, your mileage varies on this news…

  • Official confirmation direct from Patty Jenkins of Kristin Wiig joining WW2 as Cheetah. I’m intrigued!
  • Karl Urban confirmed that, as suspected, Alex Garland not only wrote Dredd, but stepped in and directed it once the director was canned.

  • Welp, pre-FX aside, Shazam’s costume does indeed appear to be the classic one, with the ubiquitous fine texture weave I hate so much. The fake muscles are weird, but I like the way they handled the lightning bolt, and the cool nod to the golden age books with those Talky Tawny symbols at the cape. The cape design itself, with the stiff hood, is creating a weird massing to his upper half, something I’ve worried about when designing a similar vibe on some TRDL characters with hoods…
  • Rumors are afoot that Jessica Drew may be brought into Spider-Man 2 as a female lead. I’d be down with it. Super down!
  • Neat: Jon Favreau has been announced as helming a Star Wars live action show, presumably for the new streaming service.
  • Mackenzie Davis from Halt and Catch Fire (and more recently, Blade Runner 2049) may have been tapped for Terminator 6… which bodes well for Terminator 6…
  • Elseworlds may be dead… but Black Label is new, and is basically the same thing. I like that Wonder Woman, if nothing else.
  • I love that Westworld not only embraces their obsessive fan community of conspiracy theorists and plot hypothesizers (like this guy) they are actively involving them/us in S02.
  • Reshoots on Deadpool 2… after bad test screenings… thats not good. As nice as the current pedigree technically is (re: our recent podcast about Atomic Blonde and John Wick 2) I wonder what we lost when Tim Miller left.
  • NEED
  • I remain uninterested in Superman comics, but I think BMB is right: optimism is what sets him apart from other characters, and needs to be the focus. All Star Superman was successful in this way.
  • I am SO DOWN with the Morrison/Quitely New X-Men costumes happening here. FINALLY.
  • Lastly, Lego Pacific Rim sweding! Excellent. I’d rather watch that.

Danger Netflix Streaming Bandwidth Caps – Robots Root 6 Mar 2018

The Lost in Space trailer is looking pretty fresh to this guy. I like how weird this version of the Doctor is, and that the robot appears to be xenobiological… maybe…

Thats Just Lazy Writing – Robots Root 9 Feb 2018

Deadpool 2’s new trailer is pretty much spot on what you’d expect, and it works perfectly. Favorite detail: Chunk’s shirt from Goonies! I love it.

  • In Movies that Aren’t Black Widow News: Milla Jovovich has replaced Olivia Munn in Hummingbird. I think she’ll do a fine job but I was looking forward to Munn, who, for all the other obvious reasons i’d be on board about it, hasn’t had a series role like this to date and I was interested in seeing how she’d work.
  • The magical world of what Netflix buys and for what reason continues to intrigue me: for three different reports I’ve read, it appears Abrams and crew new the whole ‘slap Cloverfield references on a sci fi film’ experiment was collapsing, so they sold the project to Netflix for $50M, putting them in the green, as it exceeded their production budget and more importantly allowed them to sidestep the quagmire of marketing costs. Netflix paid a huge sum (though half of the total for Bright) even though they fully understood what they were getting. To say they bought it for post-Super Bowl buzz alone seems almost cynical to write, but that’s the space Netflix is operating in, with the original content streaming wars. We used to ooh and ahh and tssk  the outrageous prices for Super Bowl ad time, but that’s an incredible sum just to convince the 5 remaining non-Netflix subscribers to join, and the remaining 99.9999999% of the civilized world to stay on the service. Which is not to say I won’t watch the film (I will) and BTW, Robot-Kraken Podcast guest host Blake ‘Begin Again’ Simmons implored me to watch Bright, saying it was actually pretty good. SO! More on both projects in next month’s show, I’m guessing.
  • Drunk History features Nichelle Nichols which is pretty awesome. I’d watch it but something in it tripped the sensors in my current host country, so it’ll have to wait.
  • The most reassuring thing about the details on Harrison Ford’s advisory role on Han Solo is reading that he basically just bullshitted about his experience and what Lucas was always talking about, and then just said, go nuts! Paycheck for light aircraft repair bills… but also, no pushing about the impression or some big speech about looking like a young Harrison Ford, just insights into how Ford felt Solo ticked. Pretty great, actually.
  • Apparently the Venom trailer will be released while I’m flying across the Pacific. Either I’ll land to accolades or scorn. About the trailer, not my arrival. Everyone’s excited.
  • Jessica Jones S02 is imminent, and the full trailer looks great. Tone is consistent, actors remain solid… PLUS the addition of Expanse’s Terry Chen (Prax Meng) in a very different role than we last saw for him. That’s AWESOME.
  • So, not sure, but Titan looks like it might be B-Movie material. However it ALSO reads as a video summary of my entire TRDL Universe situation, more or less, so. There’s that! Accidental marketing.
  • I’m sure you’ve seen this by now, but this fan-made alternate opening for Force Awakens is pretty rad. Not for what it was intended, because the mystery and interest in the setting of Jakku was perfect as-is and didn’t need explaining. But rather, just to see them tow a Star Destroyer carcass to a jumk planet and then dump it. The movie made it feel, without explanations, like it crashed there from an aerial battle… never thought of it as wreckage being cleared from dangerous hyperspace traffic areas or what have you. Star Wars has always played loose with the idea of space junk. It’s only there when serving the plot.
  • Delos Destinations viral is making me HOT HOT HOT!
  • This whole exchange on ‘the mutant cure’ is hilarious.
  • An articulated, jet boot sorta havin, repulsor sorta usin, ultra rad Iron Man cosplay… but doods IT CHARGES HIS IPHONE TOO.

Finally, I leave you with this: yawning is contagious.

Custom Decorative Tissue – Robots Root 30 Jan 2018

The Ultimate Unboxing Video, by goneintorapture.com. I still can’t stop staring at it. I love it so.

Meanwhile, in space:

  • While the execution is a little rough, i like the concept of Westworld viral being Delos interfaces and data screens that have been corrupted by bloody warnings and cries for help. Also, I’m holding my breath until Westworld S02, thanks. LOVE it.
  • This look at the new tech used to film the Valkyrie flashbacks in Ragnarok is fascinating, if you’re into that sort of thing, which I am. Otherwise, just look at the test footage, which feels like a microcosm glance at how fun that shoot must have been. All the behind the scenes stuff makes Waititi feel like a force of nature. A subversive one.
  • I loved this video. I love scale videos. Scale fascinates me. I appreciates that the scale reference module shifts in the video, from a human to a dump truck to the Statue of Liberty. I don’t quite understand the scale mismatch on the Xenomorph (2.1m) and Predator (2.2m) but otherwise very cool. I think my favorite was classic Mothra, complete with a 747 for scale.
  • The fanbase for Monty Python is dying out (more figuratively than literally, one hopes) but for those of us who remember the animations, here’s great archival of Gilliam walking an interviewer through the cut-animation process. Love it. As the so . of past-up artists in the days before digital, I enjoy reminders of the hands-on crafter approach to all of this prior to the advent of modern tools.
  • Jessica Jones S02, March 08, that’s all we need to know. No spoilers so far, which I appreciate, other than hints of Purple Man.
  • Here’s an amazing miniature VHS library. For science.
  • Hans Zimmer is apparently scoring Dark Phoenix. This is only important because Zimmer was supposedly retired from supers films. I just love his scores, regardless of the super side of it, but I do think he elevates material.
  • Indiana Jones 5 begins production in 2019, supposedly. Cue all the skeleton memes from Raiders.

That’s all for today. My today. Probably your last night. Time travel is weird.

Bruce Wayne Drinks Martinis – Robots Root 2 January 2018

Jon Hamm as Bruce Wayne is all I’ve ever wanted, suddenly. Where all the photomanips are, can’t tell you.

Belated Root! This was written and scheduled to post right before Xmas… but since the Internet is now ruined, it did not.

  • Good news. The Dark Phoenix movie swears it passes the Bechdel Test. Pretttttty low bar, but then again, look what we’ve become.
  • Just failed to resist watching the new BP international trailer. I swear this one is going to be almost as fun color theory as Coco… the shots are breathtakingly arranged.
  • I just read this satirical article about how terrible A-Wings are… and it reminded me: I used to hate, but now love, B-Wings. Somewhere in my late 30’s I fell in love with asymmetry. Admittedly the Falcon still bothers me, but it’s more of a line of sight thing.
  • I don’t mind waiting until 2019 for a Stranger Things 3. It takes time to do it right. My one concern is that kids age up pretty rapidly. But hey. Can’t stop biology.
  • Supposedly a Ben Kenobi film will begin production in 2019 for release in 2020. I still have my doubts on this project, if it’s on Tattooine. I’d like to mine a different well and tell a story that doesn’t involve that planet. I can imagine a number of interesting explorations post Ep VIII that could be fun, and even pair a few legacy characters in an interesting way. What if he goes into hiding but Boba Fett is on the hunt? We could see him on the run across numerous cool worlds, and outsmarting the supposedly best bounty hunter in the galaxy, a cat and mouse game where the pair are almost equal, until Kenobi lands in Tattooine and manages to stay below Fett’s radar despite his employer in IV. There, Disney. Free.
  • I didn’t think I’d be interested, but hot damn is this animation style not working for this project! Looks awesome.
  • Jessica Jones S02 trailer is up. My favorite detail was her receiving a Maleev cover as a painting or some such.
  • My response to the Battle Angel Alita trailer was initially so severe I didn’t have interest in actually WATCHING it. The eyes killed me. But I finally did. And you know what? I still think this literal reaction to anime is an art school experiment gone awry… but the rest of it looks like good cyberpunk. I really like the translucency and detail in her arms.
  • Your chance of being accidentally murdered by a pizza bot in SF has reduced dramatically. And by accidentally,  I mean on purpose, because robots.
  • I WOULD TOLLY GO.
  • This is supposedly a model test for Venom. if true, I’m disappointed. I wanted something less literal, more like the commando version from recent years.
  • The concept for the ongoing series spinning out of What We Do in the Shadows is brilliant.
  • I want those plans.
  • Having apparently learned nothing from the Dark Universe implosion, Paramount have announced a number of release dates for Hasbro properties, without any concept to guide them. There’s some real gems in there… maybe even a Jem… ha. I mean no. But maybe.

Stay tuned for fresh Root, as well as more info on the next Robot-Kraken podcast episode and our upcoming convention appearances, later this week!

Needs More Tuning Fork – Robots Root 14 July 2017

Look, I try to be optimistic. I like Maximus the Mad and the actor playing him (the most interesting component of the Inhumans storyline in the comics) and I like the Ken Jeung KARNAK probably the most of all of the adapted designs… but the hair. THE HAIR. This header image, though, presents the Inhumans as seen in the show, but as drawn by the artist best associated with the modern Inhumans comic: Jae Lee. Just like Dillon did with Preacher and Jock did with Losers, when the comic artists redraw the characters for adapted continuity, I really enjoy it. So, now you can too!

Thus and therefore, Robot’s Root!

  • This is the best advertising for this sex club… in fact, for all of Australia, I’ve ever seen…
  • Gary Oldman is amazing. That is all.
  • Umbrella Academy is greenlit for a Netflix series. Stoked! I know of the creators, well, tangentially, from over a decade ago, through Terra Major Press.
  • Speaking of Inhumans: Who’s this mystery woman, and does she hold the secrets to somehow saving this show from itself… and that medusa wig?
  • Surprising precisely zero people, Matt Reeves is writing his own Batman script. I had optimism about the last one, but I have more now.
  • Rick and Morty awesome claymation is awesome.
  • Gang of Bad Photoshop Compositing!
  • What’s this? Typhoid Mary (maybe) in Jessica Jones S02? YES PLEASE. I like the crazy girls!*
  • Blade Runner photos. GIMME THIS NOWS
  • Well, Blake Lively has been cast in a female-driven spy vehicle. Time to learn acting…
  • More Black Panther costume radness.
  • A bunch of Gifted minivids featuring the characters. I’m always interested in how they nod to comics imagery while not doing so overtly. Such as the latest Defenders poster, with Danny Rand’s collar being flipped up, evoking his crazy 70s flare collar in the comics, or here, how Jamie Chung’s Blink turns pinking/purple only when using her power.
  • Lastly, something we’ve talked about on the Robot-Kraken Podcast before: the enticing possibility of turning Stark into a supervillain in the MCU. This post goes into a fair amount of detail positing that he will be the MCU’s Doctor Doom, which is a flawed premise, given licensing and other issues, but I still like the idea. I have trouble imagining they would flip their cash cow, but hey. From a narrative standpoint I’d be down.

*apparently, according to dating history, possibly accurate. I know people SAY that. But srs.

OK, back to working on the TRDL Sourcebooks…

This Just Happened – No Digileias and Other Things 170117

Image
Either those rumors of Disney swooping in to secure digital rights to Carrie Fisher’s likeness generated a hot storm of bad press and they backed off, or they were never true to begin with. Either way, I think I’m in the minority when I say it wouldn’t offend me if they made CGI General Organas in the future. But either way, the story has certainly changed.

Meanwhile…

– Witness Chewie pull Unkar Plutt’s arm off. On repeat!
link!

-Witness John Boyega run around in unfortunately garish jaeger pilot gear with rubbery bits.
link!

– Witness evidence of alternate death scenes for K2SO and Cassian… I mean, we know they shot several, but I was amused just watching Tudyk act it out. He’s a champ.
link!

– Witness everyone involved in Defenders talk about Defenders. I’m excited!

– Witness Inumans casting descriptions that are totally not the royal family u guise totally!

Look at this targeted ad fail on FB. An article on the Bombshells product line and ‘feminist empowerment’ followed by an ad for Frank Cho’s FB Page… Frank Cho being the new poster boy for sexist and exploitative comic work after having overtaken Adam Hughes in the public consciousness (which is all overblown in my opinion)…

Aha! Not that I know my Dr. Who. But still.

I like the concept of stealth nerd attire. I don’t need a yellow liner on a blazer, but the bat symbol was a nice touch.

Less Chimichangas for Tim Miller – 24 October 2016

Image
This one I initially discounted as rumor, but apparently the fallout stems from, aside from a general power struggle, the fact that Tim Miller wanted to do a stylized sequel, and Reynolds wanted to stick with the 4th wall lunacy of the first film.

In other news…

Image
ITEM: Very sad news this weekend: Steve Dillon passed away at age 54. Quite a shock. Makes me a bit nostalgic, and sad for his family certainly. TICKETS WAITING TO BE PUNCHED ABOVE US ALL, friends.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Season 2 of Jessica Jones will include all female directors as a mandate. As a rule, I think that’s pretty awesome.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: So many things over the weekend! This was announced officially later Friday afternoon, ending months of speculation and years of fantasy casting. People were talking about Glover as a young Han even before there was a Han Solo movie.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: I tend to ignore ‘science’ features that include a soundtrack and snippets of interviews with a single source. But I thought the ‘microburst’ concept was interesting, if nothing else. Weather pRn!

Image
ITEM: This rad Lego nod to Rogue One is pretty layered in its coolness. It’s a great relief sculpture of K-2SO as it is, but then they framed it like an illustration and built Lego MARKERS. That’s nuts. I love it.

Image
And finally, I made another Lego mech… this time at the lego store in my neighborhood. You can rent time with their bins so I take my son there while my daughter is in ballet sometimes. Concepting/Search/Assembly time, about 35 minutes.
