No Good To Us Dead – Robots Root 4 Oct 2018

My favorite news of the moment is the confirmation that Jon Favreau’s SW TV series will be called The Mandalorian, and have a lone gunslinger vibe. I’ve only scratched the surface of Mandalore in the Clone Wars series thus far, but I’ll be interested to see if it’s another species wearing Mandalorian armor, as with the Fetts, or if it’s a true Mandalorian, who eppear to have a pretty interesting story of their own. Either way, exploring the Outer Reach, shooting to kill, best helmet design in the series, I’m on board…bonus: Pedro Pascal in the live action SW series? YES PLS

Meanwhile, this may be happening RIGHT now:

 • I haven’t watched this, being in back to back meetings all day, but I’m optimistic. Ferrell’s haircut alone! DAPPER. Update: Welp, yep, I AM THE TARGET MARKET.
 • Despite my doubts, they just sold me on the Kingsman prequel. I mean, I didn’t have doubts about it being a prequel… or even about the speculative film’s value… I just figured that Millar was spouting without anything to back it up, given that Kingsman 2 didn’t do very well. But I like the concept of the series and I’m on board. But whoa: Ralph Fiennes?!? Yes please.
 • Want some candy? Yes, of course they do.
 • Bad Birds of Prey news, following on the heels, so to speak, of very good news earlier this week… Rosie Perez appears to have been cast as the Question. Why for the love of R’yleh… I held out this morning for awhile hoping it was a hoax.
 • I don’t know why they keep referring to the uniforms in Dark Phoenix as ‘classic’… I mean, I guess compared to others in the franchise they are, but these are Frank Quitely’s excellent designs from New X-Men thanks. Love it!
 • I don’t need a lot of Luke in my Star Wars IX, but I do dig the concept of a flashback showing him pulling Star Destroyers into orbit. What a great image. Well, THROUGH orbit.
 • Here’s a trailer for Runaways S02. I’m stoked!
 • Hey look: at least Venom is compared (fairly) favorably to Catwoman. But look, here’s a reasonably, contextually, positive review about what’s in the tin.
 • Entourage played the Aquaman movie concept as a riff on big budget supers films with no artistic merit, ie. the ultimate low-brow sellout move with devastating financial and professional risk. But as this look back shows, it mirrored the future reality pretty accurately.
 • Though it’s pretty likely Amazon will pull it once they figure it out, they are allowing Verhooven’s original X-rated cut of Robocop to stream on Prime right now. I need to get on that myself!
 • Disney just greenlit a Lilo and Stitch live action adaptation. I’m on board: great 3d alien and a more powerful non-traditional body image situation for young girls than the more famous Moana. Excellent!
 • This is a cool Millennium Falcom triptych, but I’d like it more if there was NO there there between them. Imply it, don’t show it!
 • Surprisingly, at least one review claims there’s MORE there there to the Titans series, in a way that JUST might be interesting enough to try out. Despite that Starfire.

Thats all for today. We are recording another episode of Robot-Kraken tonight, so if you feel a tingling, happy sensation, it’s probably your collective awareness of our enthusiasms. All hail the TRDL hive mind!

Sensing Death all Over the Place – Robots Root 19 May 2017

Despite it’s production problems, I’m happy to say I liked what I saw in this trailer for ST: Discovery. I like the cast, the alien designs, and the rework of the Klingons especially. I have some trouble with the ‘set 10 years before Kirk’ business, because we are stuck in that weird loop, where the technology shown in the prequel looks more advanced than the technology in the primary series, but at least this one is based on being a prequel of the Abrams-Trek*, so it’s more aligned in that regard. *WAIT now I’m confused. Two places have stated this is in the ‘Prime Universe’ aka prior to TV Kirk and the smooth as shit Enterprise, so I don’t even. There seem to be design elements nodding to TOS, as well as to Enterprise AND the Abramsverse.

Meanwhile, in space, this happened:

 • In this latest Mummy trailer, I think my favorite part was Tom Cruise screaming “MY FACE! MY FACE!” which felt meta.
 • The Alienist is right up my alley: dark business in old timey ways!
 • Mera’s revised costume is very green and so much SIMPLER than anything in the DCCU and I like it.
 • Aunt May wins.
 • Trip OUT: Steve Coogan and John C Reilly filming Laurel and Hardy…
 • This awesome Periodic Table shows what each element can be used for, which is a GREAT added detail. Kind of mind blowing. Fundamentally changes how you learn about them. Also, pretty current: Lead is used for ‘weights’ which is true, but twenty years ago the reference would be a more alarming use.
 • Another useful tool: 30 ways to die by electrocution in 1930. I found these fascinating, as in many cases i was grasping at what I was looking at. Not grasping the mystery pipe while standing in water, mind you.
 • So far, early fan and critic reviews of Wonder Woman are extremely positive. I mean, BVS was too, but still, given the early talk that this was a hot mess, maybe optimism is called for here.
 • If you don’t want to see any Han Solo anything, don’t click through. If you want to see some rad pre-CGI hoopties, tho…
 • Finn Jones let slip that Defenders takes place over a few days rather than weeks. That’s very good news, given the concept and central tension among the members of the team.

That’s all for today. Back to polishing your forehead ridges that you should or shouldn’t have in continuity.

Deeply Dapper at Saltcon Plus Other Things 3 March 2017

Image
Robot-Kraken fans take note: Deeply Dapper (Kris McClanahan) is tabling at Saltcon in Salt Lake City this weekend. Crack your coffers open and go pay him a visit!

Plus:

Trailer Updatery Commencing:

Image
I like everything I’m seeing from the latest Pirates film… even the new de-aged Jack Sparrow.
Optimisms! From whence there were none. I mean, I loved the first trailer, but based on the last few installments… link!

Image
and then, on the other side of the optimism spectrum, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which we never had any doubts about over here at Robot-Kraken (cue our March broadcast) and this new trailer brings plenty of new yeeee. link!
Even the trailer TEASER was awesome: link!]link!

Image
And then, the film most people wrote off based on Prometheus, but which is looking block-rockin*: Alien: Covenant, has a new trailer: link! Oddly enough, though, the otherwise quite aesthetically pleasing Katherine Waterston has been successfully blanched of interest, and I’m a little bit concerned about the ‘couples’ thing. I get it, Adam and Eve. Let it go, Ridley Scott.
The standout moment for me was the Xenomorph headbutting the cockpit glass.

Image
Finally, the new Kong trailer looks super fun. It’s one of those trailers that would almost seem more stylish than the film itself, except for how much the early reviews are saying this is a kick ass film. Thoughts:
/// The sound fx are amazing. Timed music and beats to elements of imagery.
/// John C Reilly continues to own my attention, which is saying something, since Brie Larson is like RIGHT THERE.
/// the use of ‘Gotta get outta this place’ and then recontextualized twice into different songs
/// that shell drop, so metaphorical and stuff
/// that nixon bobble
/// plus I spy a kraken
I still can’t get behind those dumb as Skull buggas. Why would THAT form evolve in nature? But anyway.

Meanwhile…

– Aquaman Always Uses the Butterfly Stroke: Snyder released some weird, blurry, underwater test footage of Aquaman. Look, that’s actually what I WANT it to be. I’m tired of underwater supershenanigans just looking like Simi Valley but with air bubbles. Or in this case, no air bubbles.
link!

– I’m the Grayist There Is at What I Do. Make That Greyist: I haven’t even seen Logan yet (Sunday) but I’m already chomping at the bit for the black and white iteration, if this comes to pass.
link!

– The Correct Amount of Cyberleather Olivia Wildes is N+1: Reading about the near-dead, moastly dead, pretty much definitely dead Tron 3 makes me have sads.
link!

Image
– I’ll Show YOU a Heat Sink Like You’ve Never SEEN Before: An artist I follow on IG, from WETA (PEARCE) is the hand behind their kickstarter board game. I love this thing. I’d buy in in a hot minute if I wasn’t trying to be reasonable after too many convention related costs. Read about it here:
link!
And here’s the Kickstarter plus more detail. SO GOOD. This guy is my current favorite mecha artist, BTW. And given my obsession with Shirow, that’s saying something. There’s rumblings about the cost, the actual playability of Cryptozooic’s other offerings, and the fact that a WETA-affiliated project doesn’t need crowdfunding. But it looks so fun.

– In Brightest Day, In Blackest Night, Marketing is Marketing: Everyone’s teasing Lantern being introduced in the Justice league film in some way. Which Lantern? Who knows? Do they immediately die? Probably. Is Henry Cavill being cheeky on IG? YES. Is Armie Hammer looking involved? Very much. But lets take a step back and Marvel, if you will, that the state of WB is such that they can make teasing the involvement of GREEN LANTERN IN A JUSTICE LEAGUE MOVIE an attempt at viral marketing for pre-release buzz. I mean, seriously. Why WOULDNT he be, and also, what about the three weeks of SEVEN SEVEN UNITE THE SEVEN they committed to (with 6 characters) until they dropped it. link!

– Flinty Actor Needed; Arm Optional: This round robin on Cable casting is hilarious. I like Pierce Brosnan, I can see Russel Crowe… but I especially like the rumor today that David Harbour from Stanger Things screen tested for it. If that’s even remotely true, my money’s on that one. I can see that working in the Deadpool tone much more easily. link! for a photomanip of Crowe, and link! for a cut and paste of Harbour. Just because.

– Or Maybe Change the Wifi Password: This is an amusing story, at least from a parental perspective. Seems severe. But hey, GET A JOB.link!

– Its My Party and I’ll Bat-Tusi if I Want to: Apparently, and again, much of this is rational-sounding speculation, really, like Matt Reeves really put WB over a barrel and got full creative control of Batman. Good on him, if so. link!

– Speaking of Leaping Robots: While we’re at it, let’s improve their freaky spider walking. For more urgent muderdeathkills.link!

– Nolan is Being Nolan: I love that he found a way to make the telling of a war movie in present tense become fractured and complicated. It really makes sense, though, what he’s talking about. I found it fascinating. Merging events that occur either as a week, day or a few hours, depending on POV, but all at once… link!

– Red Skull is Back Oh Wait: Rumor mumblings indicate the Black Mask may be in Gotham City Sirens. I like him more, visually, then the Red Skull, frankly, and I think he could look pretty cool tricked out and bedazzled or whatever in the Ayers-SS-Aesthetic. link!

Also, some casting updates, because happening:

Inhumans Casting Additions: Serinda Swan as Medusa (who I assume will always be preferred in her Zatanna fishnets over this no matter how good the costume and FX are) …
link!

X-Men Casting Addition: Steve Moyer of True Blood has jumped on board, as well as a few others. The girl that was weirdly annoying on Gotham for awhile, etc link!

Thus, I leave you for today. Go forth and apply your nerd standard trade!
