PRAY TO ME! – Robots Root 21 July 2017

I’m running out of space on my neck for all the Mondo poster recreation tattoos I need to do.

Robot’s Root!

  • To hell with the Blu-Ray. I don’t do the medias! But give me that ARM. This is how it starts… at least at one point in one of the timelines…
  • The Shape of Water looks like a whimsical cross between Del Toto’s Hellboy work (I mean, Abe Sapien, COME ON) and some sort of Coen Brothers fever dream.
  • This Rick and Morty S03 trailer requires a psych evaluation before viewing.
  • I am, unfortunately, a product of the target market.
  • Unlocked is my kind of jam! However, this oversharing trailer is not.
  • NIGHTMARE FUEL for nightmares that nightmares themselves have.
  • Continuing my theme of being optimistic about ST: Discovery, I love this retro tech. LOVE IOT. The costuming and design work for the Klingons is excellent.
  • Walter Goggins in an undisclosed role in Ant-Man and Wasp? I’m so in… I’m like OVER IN.
  • I know it’s profound and everything… but just look at how gorgeous they are.
  • I lasted three hot minutes in my attempt to not watch the second Kingsman 2 trailer… man I cannot WAIT.
  • Star Wars, but with Owen Wilson’s ‘WOW’ as the light saber sound FX. Brilliant and mesmerizing.
  • The weirdest things from these SDCC views of the Justice League costumes: the fact that the mannequins are shaped, posed, and detailed about 3% as well as the Hot Toys stuff, and that Flash’s hodgepodge is held together with arbitrary flex cabling.
  • This move to shove Shazam out the door before Marvel’s Captain Marvel film is both a little bit ballsy and also pure DC/WB at this point. No script, just an awkward live statement in a Kevin Smith interview.
  • Best ad for GOG2 Blu-Ray ever. EVER.
  • This Defenders promo is composited strangely, hampered by misplaced nostalgia and awkward narration by Stan Lee that doesn’t fit the tone of the Netflix shows… but the core concept of damaged, human heroes IS a Stan Lee base concept, and we DO get a shot of the Punisher, admittedly with a bad haircut.
  • Inhumans is getting worse instead of better. I’m struggling to be optimistic.
  • A recurring theme with the non-Marvel supers films that always bothers me: scheduling them, attaching creators, generating hype… all before a script. Sure, a number of the Marvel films had poor or missing shooting scripts, but especially early on, and they weren’t presented as empty tins with zoomy labels like this. Here we have the Venom people talking about what they plan to do, not about a script in place. That’s just fundamentally wrong.

  • Best Batman Black and White statue ever, courtesy of Becky Clooney, who first got to see it in people’s snaps from the con.
  • And here’s something interesting: Doctor Doom solo film, developed by Crawley and involving Dan Stevens? WOW.

Lastly, Kris and I began our second annual weekly-ish Game of Toles commentary last night, and it’s available today. I’ll post a formal thing about it later tonight, but here’s the itunes link: http://bit.ly/RoboApple

GOG2 is Pushing my Technicolor Buttons – Robots Root 29 April 2017

It’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 weekend (somewhere) and the reviews look good. I’m drawn back to this comparison, above, of the marketing and how well those firms understood both the material and the target market. Not because I want to see JL fail, but because I want to see GOG2, and all the supers films possible, succeed.

Meanwhile, a Robot’s Root weekend edition for 4/29/17!

  • “That’s not MY Superman!” they all said.
  • Tyler Labine just joined Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency. Excuse me while I add that to my sizable queue. Netflix/BBC
  • Great second look at that Kingsman 2 trailer. I LOOOOOOVE all the cheesy americana details. The BASEBALLS.
  • Sobering encapsulation of everything clouding ST: Discovery’s production progress. Doesn’t look gooooood.
  • My lovely wife worked full time, took night classes, and did final presentations (twice) within a week of giving birth. She did not, however, table hop battlements.
  • SMASHY MOUTHY! I’m so down.
  • I kind of like the idea of a purple Gamora. There’s so much blue skin in the MCU space stuff with the Kree and other races… having the purple almost feels like it makes more sense.
  • I’m not in the sport camera market. I have a GoPro but it is mostly for documenting my deaths in the event I am flattened on the bike. But if I were, IF I WERE, this camera
  • BRB, have to go install Nightingale flooring. Because ninjas.
  • Is WALL-E Satan? Maybe.
  • Is this rad marketing or curious desperation or a meltdown? Who’s to say.

:::

Finally, I wanted to mention an add to our most recent few Robot-Kraken Podcasts, where we’ve been discussing our art process and how it has changed over the years: I talked a bit about my father’s experiences as a graphic artist when I was a kid, and how many of the early (and current) tools in the digital realm were approximations of physical actions from real paste-up work. Here’s a great video on how the industry evolved, if you’re interested in the details.

Spidey Should be Riding Fixed – 12 July 2016

Image
You knew this would be my banner image, but srsly, it should be a fixed gear, I’d wager. Unless he’s like rescuing a hapless NYC bike commuter. I like the shot of him starting to ride it, looking over his shoulder for errant Ubers, raging taxicabs, distracted SUV drivers playing Candy Crush, and the like.

ITEM: Not at all a secret at this point, but Colin Firth is back in Kingsman 2. Flashback? Resurrection? Clone? Twins? This is one of the few projects out there where I’m not even worried about it. They are batshit crazy. So it should be amusing, whatever it is. Plus, they’re confident enough about it to let it be known.

ITEM: Well, I vaguely reember a reference to this, but around the time Hotel Transylvania 1 came out… the original seeds of this project were back in 2007, when Genndy Tartakovsky was hot off of Samurai Jack. It’s languished until recently, when he was getting questions about it while doing press for the sequel to that film, now that Luke Cage is more familiar to mainstream audiences thanks to the Netflix series. Far out art, man. Not my cup of tea, but still.

ITEM: Unfortunately I already stumbled into the other article about the ‘true villain’ of SS, which was sort of what I expected, but still, takes some of the fun out of it. However, I really like, as noted here and in a few other articles this week, how Ayers notes that in the narrative of the film, Batman is the big bad, according to the POV of the villains. Love that. Always do.

ITEM: The WW film synopsis tells us nothing. Rather, it tells us two things: one, someone over there is smart enough to not just data dump everything about the project a year out, like they did with BVS in their nervousness… and two, Gal Gadot is aesthetically pleasing. Actually, it doesn’t tell us that. But we know of it.

ITEM: I had a friend and mentor in HS who was, at the time, starting to shepherd me into the FX industry. He had been working on Terminator 2 at the time, and this was my career path, following him into is, by virtue of distressed diorama practical work. Anyway, he told me, through a co-worker or acquaintance, about Deckard’s gun being heavy and mechanical, and how it adds to how you see Ford weaving it around with some slop in the film, particularly towards the end when he’s injured. I always loved that detail.

ITEM: OK, I’ll bite. This baiting article posits that Monopoly is the worst game ever: unfun, boring, time-consumptive by design. I counter that it is super fun, interesting, and makes time fly. My only complaint is easing children into it means a variable attention span that ultimately results in my younger flipping the board, just when it’s getting good. Also, we have ‘peculiar market forces and banking activities’ at our house, to make the full edition of the game more palatable for younglings, which beats the kid-oriented editions, which are so simplified so as to be of little challenge. Also, I have the Marvel Comics edition, which is the best ever. Though I’m tempted by some of the other genre editions.

Does James Bond Dance? – Robot’s Root 160529

Image
So much Bond speculation over the past week! First, it was that Gillian Anderson’s mockup Bond poster was being taken seriously. Then it was that Tom Hiddleston was in serious talks to take over (and boy, can he dance)… and then it was that outlier Jamie Bell was also in talks. Lastly, today, it’s that Night Manager director Susanne Bier might join Hiddleston on the next film, replacing Sam Mendes. All indications are that Night Manager is excellent and it’s certainly easy to imagine Hiddleston in the role (as a suave, intelligent, less physical Bond) though Bell has charisma and is certainly fit (the ears, tho) but maybe the most interesting point would be a female Bond director for the first time ever… on a franchise well known for either exploiting women or overcompensating half-heartedly about exploiting women.

I REBEL and other things 8 April 2016

Image
Look, we’ve covered this in three posts plus talked about it like 33 hours worth (and not even on Robot-Kraken podcast yet) so I’ll just leave this here as a reminder that it’s only been two days or so since the trailer was released, and I already am having fever dreams about it.
Here’s a good analysis from the usual suspect:

In other news…

Image
This Behind The Scenes/ Easter Eggs/Development video by my man Mr Sunday Movies was pretty good. His Easter Egg video for the film was pretty comprehensive as well. In this one, I was struck by how, on the one hand, concept Doomsday was more interesting proportions (I love drawing beasties with hunch musclebacks and long arms) but on the other, STILL MUTED BROWN. Imagine had they given him a striking blue or green look? I’m so tired of drab designs for major characters.

Cloak and Dagger was one of the projects that a poorly realized April Fool’s announcement someone made had been supposedly greenlit (along with She-Hulk and several others)… however, a few days later it was officially announced as a real series deal for the formerly ABS Family channel, Freeform. I doubt the two were related, but it sucked for the project announcement because I ignored it for days, assuming it was fake.

The Honest Trailer for Force Awakens was good. The trope about it being a clone (so to speak) of New Hope, thats kind of tired, but the rest of it was fun. “Han Solong”… and my favorite, above, Rey’s so poor she has to make her own action figures.

I had this whole elaborate rambling conversation with an interfriend about great female superhero film characters, who our favorites were, etc and the friend was positing that Gadot as WW was the best we’ve had yet. I still argue that Hayley Atwell’s Agent Carter takes it. She’s amazing.

Image
Her ROYAL THIGHNESS indeed.

Seriously, though, between Atwell’s acting, her character’s dialog and story arc, and the thematic material, she owns it.
