Save it for Comic Con – Robot’s Root 12 June 2018

This Spider-Verse movie may be the best comic-related anything ever, film specific. I’m astonished at how good it FEELS. Also, i’m in it for the cop dad.

  • Doctor Doom looks less likely, meaning even more likely a wholesale transition to Marvel’s stable.
  • For this guy, the Hit-Girl and related properties have lost their luster, but Millar and Vaughn have plans for more. Meanwhile, there’s another Kingsman movie in the works (I’m OK with it I suppose) and a turn of last century prequel (that’s what caught my eye, obviously)…
  • How about a GoT prequel set millennia earlier? You got it. Add it to the flaming pile…
  • I’ve got a fever, and the only cure is more Predators in my Predator. I guess.
  • Geoff Johns is out, but is he down? He’s still writing Green Lantern Corps, and now rumor has it Jim lee is stepping up to try and right the DCEU ship.
  • Kidding looks A M A Z I N G.
  • Bad Times at the What i TOLE!
  • Here’s a summary of all the supposed DCEU films in development. It’s stir crazy.
  • I admit I kind of want to draw all these heroes killed in Incredibles 1… or already dead… or what have you. Capes, bots, etc.
  • A well-reasoned and thoughtful consideration to the question: Is is disrespectful to drive around a dead Autobot as a car?
  • Tran leaving social media was probably good for her mental health, but sucks for all of us. She was an awesome celeb to follow, and really loved Star Wars fandom, the same crew that ate her alive and then complained about the taste.
  • I don’t know why, but I like when supers costumes are damaged or modified, as if purpose built and then evolved as circumstances change. Like Captain America’s main suit transitioning to a ‘covert ops’ version, in turn basically debadged and worn down by the time Infinity War happens. Or, as we see in this pic of Janet Van Dyne, layered.
  • So stoked on the new Hellboy film. Mignola nails it.
  • These games continue to fascinate me, even as I have no time to play them. The societal evolution in the worlds and the mechanics that allow for it is good reading.
  • I haven’t even CRACKED Star Wars: Battlefront 2 yet, but the Han Solo packs look good.

Thats all for today… still decompressing from SFCC and preparing for Fandemic!

Murder, Melody, and Minced Pies – Robots Root 25 Sept 2017

Anna and the Apocalypse is easily my most-anticipated holiday film ever. Ever ever? Ever EVER.

Robot’s Root!

  • According to the Exgovernator, Robert Patrick won’t be back for T6, which is a bummer. Also, Genesys is wiped from continuity, which suggests that Salvation is not (?). Also, here’s a reasonable roundup on dos and donts regarding saving the franchise.
  • Surprising precisely zero people, Willis and Jackson will be back for the Glass film. I mean.
  • I haven’t seen Kingsman yet, but srsly, the reveal that Colin Firth’s character was somehow still alive was quite a blunder in the previews, and the director is now speaking out about it. Good on him. What a fuck up.
  • A new Murder on the Orient Express trailer for you. SO STOKED.
  • Evangeline Lily in costume is somehow less whelming than I expected, but then again, they probably plan on CGI-ing in the visor lensing, and her wings too…Goggins, of course, owns everything.
  • Best worst knife blocks ever.
  • This article posits that Punisher doesn’t belong in the Marvel Netflix Universe. I think, rather, what they are referring to is that he’s an unrepentant domestic terrorist. He’s an anti-hero at best, in the way we root for guys who got a raw deal getting revenge in some contexts… but he’s mostly a villain. I’ve always seen him that way, despite the ways Marvel tried to sugar-coat him. As presented in DD S02, he was a psychopathic vigilante and while yes, he restrained himself from killing Daredevil, and does seem to have a moral code that prevents him from wiping out innocent civilians, I think the problem is less that he doesn’t belong in this universe, and more that he doesn’t belong in some fan-fever future Defenders team. Let him be a villain.
  • So Avatar 2 began production… and Cameron spent a fair amount of quoted effort talking up how “badass” it will be to have Stephen Lang back as the villain for four speculative films… specifically because the character died… I just can’t muster my usual optimism here: how is he going to maintain interest in this franchise over four films… how is he even going to DO four films, when only the LOTR/Hobbit stuff seemed to be willing to go apeshit pre-scheduling a million films, while every other hopeful franchise talks the talk but then caves after a weekend in global release… and how is any of this going to happen in tandem with Terminator, unless he produces on that franchise and directs these… EH! I feel like we’re seeing some of these guys just being barkers these days: Cameron, Scott, etc. “I’m making THREE awesome movies!” “No, mine is a SEVEN movie ARC OF POWER!”
  • Possibly related, here’s Doug Liman ranting about how amazing his inexplicable All You Need is Tole sequel prequel would be.
  • In a surprising plot twist, I actually LIKE this supposed brief on the Gambit project. Help me.

That’s all for today. No, I haven’t seen ST: Discovery just yet. I was catching up on Preacher. More to follow!

Just a Flesh Wound – 25 April 2017

I didn’t watch the first bridging minifilm for Alien: Covenant, but I did watch this one. I think it’s relevant.

Meanwhile, in space, this Robot’s Root is happening…

  • Best comment ever, regarding that trident there. Yes, I know the 5 point weapon has been in the comics before. Your argument is invalid.
  • I’m stoked at the Robotech resurgence. And an artist I follow, Marco Turini, was tapped to handle art chores on the new comic by Brian Wood. What a cool team-up! My concern is that they will mimic the tone and style of the anime, rather than do a grittier take that suits their own styles. If left to their own devices it would look a lot more like what Paul Pope did with Batman 100. Turini has a detailed, inky thing going on.
  • These 16th c. redesign cosplays are OUT OF CONTROL

  • The highlight of Iron Fist continues to be Jessica Henwick, who I’ve tried to fantasy-cast as pretty much anyone and everyone on the podcast.
  • Great prohibition era photos, feeling right out of the Coen Brothers playbook… but you can tell, as you go through them, that they were staged, even at the time. Still cool.
  • Spoilers if you didn’t listen to our Robot Kraken podcast review of Powerless, or watch it your own self: no longer an option.
  • Is Once Upon a Time in Venice a good bad movie, a bad bad movie, or just the worst example of trailer editing in the history of the form? I want it to be good.
  • DC just announced a Teen Titans live-action series launch. Which is great for DC fans. However they are using it to launch a streaming service, showing they learned nothing from Paramount.
  • I love James Bond. Which is Kingsman, these days. Just look at it. LOOK AT IT.
  • I also didnt watch Split, but I did learn about the stunt ending, tying it to Unbreakable (sorry, common knowledge now) and saw the awesome film recap here from Earthling Cinema. Anyway, M. Knight Toleyou announced Glass, the third film, will bring them all together. I look forward to it.
  • When Zoe Saldana says she wants to be in Dune, LET HER.
  • Shane Black confirms Predator will use practical FX. Music to my ears. And by eyes. Or something.

That’s all for now! Wipe your eyeballs down and find your center.

Precisely what we DIDN’T need from WB in the wake of BvS: overreaction and misplaced compensation for the tone of that film, by reshooting an already darkly funny, but generally urgent, film like Suicide Squad. GREAT.

Even though I liked the Lego Movie, I wasn’t generally thrilled with the prospects of a Batman Lego movie. I figured I’d see it with the kids, but more important things had my attention. However. HOWEVER. The trailer looks great. I love it. MY PARENTS ARE DEAAAAAAD! Callbacks to all the films was fun too.

Preacher is looking good. I’m stoked. First, Daredevil S02 makes BvS look bad… and now Preacher is going to own. I love love LOVE these comic adaptations being allowed to breathe over the duration of a series order.

“A team of four (a biologist, an anthropologist, a psychologist, and a surveyor) set out into a place known as Area X. The area is abandoned and cut off from the rest of civilization. They are the 12th expedition. The other expeditions have been fraught with disappearances, suicides, aggressive cancers, and mental trauma.”

Kingsman: Golden Circle. That’s the name. Kind of weak. However, traveling to the US to meet the american version of the Kingsman, which is apparently batshit crazy, almost as bad as the domestic villain, that all sounds pretty interesting. Casting, too.

Robin Wright is everything right now. First, she’s shown as one of the Amazonians in the WW film (great casting choice)… and now, she’s on board the Blade Runner sequel… as a replicant? Maybe? Who’s to say?

Hans Zimmer claims to be retiring from superhero film scoring… what a strange (and saddening) statement. My sense is that he’s spent a metric ton of time on this, especially on Man of Steel and BvS where he collaborated… and then the films are panned enough that it feels like a slap. His work on the Nolanverse is legendary (and not just my viewpoint; they are widely accepted as part of what established the tone of the film) but look, I wasn’t even a superfan of these last two super scores. His work on Inception was awesome, and his Interstellar is his BEST WORK. So, if less ‘superhero films’ means more Interstellar scores, I’m game. But not more Kung Fu Panda scores. It’s always linked to the type of project, the director’s vision, and the tone. Just like the Batman stuff, Interstellar was Zimmer and Nolan in sync.

Supposedly, you can find Wayne Manor on Google Maps, and dive down and do Streetview inside the Super Clean Industrial Design Wet Dream Batcave. I couldn’t find it. I spent three minutes! But I did find a clever Wayne Manor BS listing…

We have lots on the calendar to look forward to in 2016, and now we have one more firm date to add…

1. COCKTAILS OFF THE SPEAKER: That’s a Puddy reference. Anyway, when I learned the Amazon Tick series would be going forward, not just without Patrick Warburton, but the rest of the cast as well, I was nonplussed. Then I read Pfister may direct. Since he was the right hand of Nolan on the Dark Knight trilogy, that’s a big step back into interest piquing for this bot.

3. That CGI Looks Terrible, They All Said: While somehow, at least according to GT, people are complaining about Spider-Man ALREADY and claiming he looks like bad CGI… (this is not my experience, and everyone I know or e-know was enthusiastic) even though he’s not CGI at all… but anyway Gunn has come out and said that not only is Civil War his favorite Marvel film (even prior to FX added in) but Holland will define his role as Parker.

Meanwhile, Millar has his head up his ass. I mean, sure, that’s a fan favorite moment. But really? REALLY? The BvS trailers have been universally panned as structures in and of themselves. He’s excited about a scene.

7. Eyes Up Here: Most of this detail is now less newsworthy because of the Hot Toys statues and some of the HD screencaps out there, but here’s a gallery of close-up shots of details from the test fits. I have to try and remember and post this with the jam next week, as WW will be the subject. I was just amused at the unfortunate placement of that watermark. The detail itself is my favorite in the entire costume…

9. Treat a Queen Like a Whore, and a Whore Like a Whore. Wait: We’ve talked before here about how Miller has one viewpoint for female characters, and it’s unpleasant. Anyway, in this article on the hot mess of his Elektra: Assassin mini-series, which Bill Z drew and I thoroughly disliked at the time, the first comment in the article featured this cartoon, which OWNED.

10. Haters Gon Hate: I am floored by the negative reaction to the Ghostbusters trailer(s)… and to those, especially in advance of seeing it, I say this: WINK SMILE FUCKOFF don’t tank this movie from poor word of mouth.
