Fett’s Vette – 7 October 2018

Quick snap! No sooner than I posted the news from yesterday regarding the Mandalorian, they released the first photo and the director list. Both are pretty awesome. I do wonder at YET ONE MORE BROWN BLECHHH but the armor looks cool and the smooth helmet is a nice touch. I’m into it. It seems like they are going for an anthology vibe in tone, given that we have a wide range of styles present in these directors… Taika Waititi?!? So, optimistically this could be nuanced and pessimistically, worst-case, it will be like X-Files, like Kris said last night, where only the eccentric episodes are worth revisiting.

Thus, in space, this may be happening:

  • Lobo has finally been presented in live action… that Deadpool of the 80s… and he has… a top-knot… this looks very Monster Magnet, doesn’t it?
  • We talked about this on last night’s pod, but Chris Evans is sure heavily sayonara-ing it with his tweet. But I contend thats the sort of thing Marvel would have him do, regardless of what is happening in Avengers 4. Believe nothing. And everything!
  • Here’s 5 minutes of Aquaman for you. I’m trying to not watch any more trailers or content, but it’s probably hopeless…
  • Wait… this guy was working on this Lego model for almost as long as the actual construction. He must have started the minute the images for the planning department presentation were leaked.
  • I don’t make it out to the comic shops these days, but this new anthology of Ghost in the Shell material by guest creators is pretty amazing. I like what I see!
  • I REALLY need to see Ant-Man and Wasp again.

And with that, I leave you with a carefully curated collection of nightmare toilets.

Mount the Curb To Scale – Robots Root 14 September 2018

I HAVE SO MANY DESIRES FOR THIS R/C TUMBLER I CANT EVEN. Only second to my desires for a fully functional 1:1 scale version. HA.

Meanwhile, for science:

  • I remain on the fence regarding all this Henry Cavill business. I like him, and I’m not convinced that this isn’t all just some contract negotiation or something. His tweet last night was WEIRD. Anyway, the internet is rumbling forward, like those Mortal Engines… here’s some good thoughts about a fresh take on Superman… and here’s the current (apparently) Vegas odds… along with another set of ideas, with some overlap…  of course Bosslogic is already at it, as well, pissing off some people who can’t grasp a non-anglo Supes….
  • Han Solo in carbonite costume! SWEET! Lung was mortified…
  • This actually took me by surprise: Jason Todd and Dick Grayson face to face in Titans. Lots of fans will be into that.
  • I have seen virtually nothing with Aaron Paul, though I’m well aware of him and his pedigree. Sounds like a great add to Westworld!
  • This series of arts featuring warrior versions of Disney Princesses was controversial in my home. It was first seen by my lovely wife, who had a very negative reaction to the weapons “That’s the answer? Arm them?” and I realized that I saw it, positively, coming from the young adult/adult RPG/cosplay perspective, not the viewpoint of young girls. Interesting!
  • I saw this Lego KITT and cracked up, imagining a stop motion thing where you move a red brick left to right along the front to make the light bar. HA. I amuse me.
  • Venom as PG-13? All hope is lost.
  • Oh boy, what have they done. Robot Man was looking cool in profile… but check out his smashed together eyes and jangy mouth. GUH.
  • This fan theory about Iron Man I agree with. I felt similar. Like any good time travel/time revert story, the pivotal character must be faced with losing something. Think that incredible end of Fringe. That it would be Iron Man makes the most sense.
  • I’ve been begging for a Jon Hamm Bruce Wayne since forever. So YES.
  • Accurate.
  • A new Coen Brothers trailer is a reason to celebrate. Break out the frontier whiskey!
  • Finally, Rupert’s new Captive State seems never more relevant, doesn’t it?

An Event! – Robots Root 17 August 2018

I don’t know what you plan on doing for the next two months, but I plan to hold my breath until this is out. Good lord, am I the target market.

Meanwhile, this happened:

  • From the Thanos of Hollywood… “using Rocket Raccoon as a side-arm”… oh man. The dinosaur… THE DUSTICE LEAGUE?!??! I can’t.
  • I hadn’t seen Predators, so I didn’t know these were already sorta a thing. But now they are another thing. And a further example of how Predator is just creep-sliding into being Aliens.
  • Here’s a Dune tabletop game, in which you could never afford scale Spiceworms so whatever.
  • I love these digests of director commentaries, since I barely have time for movies, let alone commentary tracks. I haven’t seen Manhunter in years, but you know I love me some Michael Mann.
  • Look, I’m holding out a bit of hope for Iron Fist S02… even though at this point the bar is so low that the new season aspiring to basically be a Marvel Phase I plot is an accomplishment.
  • Good news, Watchmen fans: the HBO series was greenlit and is in production. I’m optimistic.
  • I was already in because Danny McBride, but the timeliness of this plot line is prescient, given how close we are to the same goddamn mistakes as the housing crisis of 2008.
  • If I had cold hard cash (and loved Disneyland more, as apparently all the adult friends of mine in LA do) this would be the auction to see.
  • Interesting observation about the Ruby Rose as Batwoman ‘controversy’… didn’t consider, or wasn’t aware of, how much the character’s heritage was a part of her identity in the books.
  • I think the cell shading feels a little soft here, like Slugterra looks, rather than how Tron looks, but hey, I’m still down with more of the Star War.
  • The premise of Joel Kinneman’s next series is interesting, in so much as we know very little about it but it sounds promising.
  • Netflix continues to kill it. The Angel is bad ass historical spy drama that I’m going to eat RIGHT up.
  • Treadstone as a series was greenlit, proving once again that Hollywood is afraid to tell a story unless it has the name of another story glued to it. I mean, come on. Couldn’t it have just been ‘Cool Spy Assassination Team’…?
  • Interesting tidbits about a Catwoman solo film that didn’t happen, from John August, a screenwriter I quite like and whose podcast I follow…
  • Lego Voltron. That is all.

And in closing, here’s ANOTHER one for which I am the target market, in the opposite direction, spectrum-wise…

Where Are You Now? – Robots Root 8 Aug 2018

Ruby Rose’s casting as Batwoman was of the most interest to me in the recent news cycle. I alternate between liking her and being cool on her… but I think she has chops and edge, and I like the LGBTQ element, even if it’s pandering to some. I guess it goes both ways though: casting a straight actor in a hugely prominent non-straight role is equally controversial, as we have seen before many, many times. I’m all for it. My one concern, and this is somewhat like how I felt when Gal Gadot was first cast as Wonder Woman: Rose is very, very wiry. They’ll make it work, but it’s going to be interesting. I just hope it’s not about burying her in armor. Bury her in a good wig!

Beyond the deepest of deeps, something emerges:

  • Endlessly pairing Star Wars characters together to rationalize a lineage for Rey is pretty boring stuff, and while I get the symmetry in having Rey’s folks be Q’ira and Han, MEH I says. What about Bossk? Lobot? Give me something more interesting, if they have to be anyone at all. Fuck it. IG-88!
  • When I first read possible news of Jon Favreau’s Star Wars series being set on Mandalore, I was B O R E D… but then I read that it would be post-Empire Mandalore, which becomes much more interesting. Maybe? $100M interesting, anyway.
  • In the ongoing fiction that Infinity War’s stakes mean something, Maria Hill and Nick Fury will appear in the next Spder-Man film. Sure, it could be flashbacks. Or whatever. Just show me a good film!
  • Well, Bruce Willis, man of a million low budget projects, WAS to star in a Moviepass feature film. HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH. uh.
  • I was never convinced by this project. However, I held out slim hope that they’d somehow make it batshit crazy and therefore entertaining. Hiatus doesn’t mean dead, but they JUST cast the female lead and had a director on board. I smell a script problem.
  • This isn’t quite the LEGO BATMAN R/C car I was envisioning, but I’m still in favor. Go to hell, doggo!
  • My daughter will be interested in this.

Protect Ya Neck – Robots Root 18 July 2018

Man, I like Manta and Oceanmaster, although the latter feels naked without neck armor. I know the talk of today is the sea dragon upgrade and all… I also  like that Fisherman King design. I’m more interested in these other six undersea realms than I am in Aquaman and his false anti-buoyancy. United the seven, indeed.

Meanwhile, in space:

  • Look I don’t know much about Dr. Who, but apparently the new Doctor can generate pizza, so I’m in.
  • Always the eternal idealist, I like to believe, I CHOOSE to believe, the 48 stars were intentional. Like Robin’s armored tunic and little boy shorts. Snyder knew whats up!
  • The History Channel is releasing an Area 52 series called Project: Blue Book. Because history. Aiden Gillen is in it though, so i’m there.
  • I remain optimistic about Bumblebee, but uh, these are starting to look a bit familiar and complicated…
  • Gotta appreciate that first Meg poster. Almost makes up for the Photoshop disaster of the second one.
  • The Starcourt Mall! Best Stranger Things teaser ever. EVER.
  • I was only interested in this fan-made film news because of learning the excellent term… Ludonarrative dissonance: is the conflict between a video game’s narrative told through the story and the narrative told through the gameplay. Ludonarrative, a compound of ludology and narrative, refers to the intersection in a video game of ludic elements – or gameplay – and narrative elements. Thats useful in my daily life! Somehow.
  • Hmmm… Marvel better get that A-Force movie together soon. If DC botches an all-female supers film first, it could become harder to get it pushed through.
  • How surreal is it that The First will feature Sean Penn (it’s a Mars colonization story) but from the creator of House of Cards, featuring his acrimonious ex-wife situation?
  • I like this Lego DB5 build even more than the MINI and the VW Type II, both of which felt hampered by the system’s challenges with compound curves.
  • I can’t tell if Patient Zero is a good movie or a bad movie, but I like intelligent, creepy zombies, and I like the conceit that Matt Smith’s character can talk to zombies only because he was once bitten, but not turned. Seems like the sort of reveal that would have been better in the film itself, rather than the trailer… the thing about music bothering zombies is interesting, too.
  • If Batwoman goes forward, it will be groundbreaking. Assuming executives don’t meddle.
  • While I’m REALLY tired of humanoid aliens in Star Trek, Discovery seems to have landed a second interesting design that outshines it’s TV budget.
  • I love Pena, but I don’t know if this film is going to work.
  • The Overlord trailer is finally out. I hope the new Hellboy film has this vibe of historical horror.
  • Millerverse adaptations are proceeding at Netflix, and they look pretty good on paper.
  • How has this not happened already? I would have thought feature film, but if sufficiently budgeted, a series is more nuanced…
  • Robot poster! Alert!
  • PLEASE let the Chameleon be in the new Spidey film. And Kraven. DO IT! I’m having Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends fever dream flashbacks.

That’s all for now. Back to power-loading on fight milk.

Thats Not Silly String – Robots Root 22 May 2018

The new West Coast Avengers is everything I want in a supers comic today. I’m delighted. Also one of my favorite artists currently working, and a great writer. Optimistic!

Also, for science:

  • Well thats great. They can RUN now, jump through holes in obstructions, and get back on their feet. Its cute that they aren’t admitting these are all prototype work for future cybersoldiers, and oh, by the way, I’ll be in my quite penetrable bunker.
  • I first heard the term “tank paratrooper” in the gag final punchline of a first season Ren & Stimpy. It’s even better in the real…
  • Here’s a cool video about the costume design on Shape of Water and others.
  • I had enough trouble as a kid dealing with the New Gods (as much as I adore Kirby now) so Eternals were WAY off the back for me. But hey, good luck! I’m on board if they do it right…
  • I don’t know if its because I’m traveling, or because I dislike the excessive abuse of the service animals system, but this struck me funny. I liked it.
  • Lung recently informed me he wasn’t a fan of Morena Baccarin because she has, to him, mean eyes. I’m usually focused on her lips and other bits, but anyway, that’s all neither here nor there because I’d be fully supportive of her playing Catwoman in that Gotham City Sirens film…
  • Here’s Bandai’s armored cats series, which, had they been available when I was in Japan, I’d have bought out like the whole supply.
  • Everyone needs a brutalist garden gnome, I says.
  • Tiny Superman. I’m jealous I didn’t think of it.
  • First, the new She-Ra is teased and it looks a bit stylized, so people got grumpy. Then the new Thundercats was revealed and it’s chibi so the all-srs fans freaked out. I can’t believe it. I mean, srsly. It looks great. CALM down. I actually enjoyed that behind-the-scenes featurette. Not the topknot tho.
  • best news of my day, tho? BEST news? Amazon picked up The Expanse. FFS that’s a relief u guise.
  • Courtesy of Lung, this custom operable Lego Tron Light Cycle display is dope. My favorite part is the little slab of light behind the cycle.

Finally, I leave you with the trailer to the Happytime Murders, which is proving to be as batshit crazy as I’d hoped!

Get this Man a Facet Tool – Robots Root 11 May 2018

Disappointed at the lack of attribution, but this is my current desktop, and I used it in our latest Robot-Kraken Podcast. So good.

  • Looking forward to American Animals, as one does.
  • I’m 100% on board with whatever regarding Birds of Prey, honestly.
  • Thinking about the future of the franchise, what ‘big event’ could replace Avengers movies? I think this is a maguffin, because the narrative had bled into other films already, such as the last two most amazing Captain America films. I was thinking about this last night. Maybe ‘Secret Wars’? Not the stitched-together battle planet, but rather the idea that the heroes and villains would be shunted into an environment forcing them to organize and fight their way out. I can see this fusing concepts from the original Secret Wars, Champions, and frankly, a good dose of what we got from Thunderbolts and Exiles: versions of characters pulled from the multiverse. Makes sense to this guy!
  • This is HIGH TREASON.
  • Donald Glover got wonderfully weird on SNL. But this novelization of the backstory of Lando is even weirder.
  • Captain Marvel already has a very intriguing cast… but they just added Annette Bening, and I’m even more intrigued.
  • Look: I’m horrified by the project, but I LOOOOVE her honesty. Legit.
  • Ron Howard + Arrested Development + Star Wars. Gold! Marketing at its best.
  • Listen, I have too much stuff, and I’m trying to get less stuff. But I’m really having trouble resisting this.
  • TAKE MY MONEY (that I don’t have)
  • I haven’t finished Clone Wars and haven’t started Rebels (kids too young) but this is very interesting to me, stylistically.
  • Everything about this. EVERYTHING. Thanks to C Ferrren for finding it…
  • Jon Favreau’s new SW series will take place during the first years of peace in the New Republic. Interesting territory for the show, I think.
  • While I understand WHY Syfy is dropping the Expanse (bad deal they made) I will just say that this better get picked up by Netflix, fast.
  • Here’s that teaser for Predator that came out yesterday. Optimism abounds, more on Kris’ side than mine. But still, love the cast. Here’s a snap of the current Predator design, in all of it’s sizzlechest, tall headed glory.
  • All the behind the scenes business is done, and Rick and Morty will be back for… 70 EPISODES… FFS that’s good news.
  • 355 is an all-female spy thriller, which is 100% better news than whatever was happening the day before it was revealed to be happening. The cast.
  • LEGO car building factory awesomeness…

And with that, a reminder to listen to our latest episode of Robot-Kraken, and in general, you know, fear not and be just…

The Cavalcade of Helmetless Heroes – Robots Root 9 Mar 2018

Herewith, witness the Calvacade of Helmetless Heroes FFS!

Meanwhile, in space, this may be happening:

  • Honest Trailers does He-Man
  • My favorite How to Dad video yet.
  • I kinda like this promo pic for Daredevil S03… done by Joe Q, even. I’ ve always been a fan of lettering pushed into the environment of the piece.
  • I have to agree: if we couldn’t have an actually FORMIDABLE foes in Phasma, at least give her this scene to show her ruthlessness…
  • Now here’s the full trailer for Prospect, which still adorns my desktop as a background screen…
  • Killmonger concept art shows that the final version was the best choice. I still wish he kept the mask on the whole time… it was awesome.
  • More neural net fun, this time with sentence gradients.
  • Again, not a horror fan, but Endless looks pretty interesting. Lovecraftian doomsday cult business. Sure!
  • Dafne Keen is on board the new big budget take on His Dark Materials… I think they are abandoning the Golden Compass released prior…
  • Krysten Ritter says no Defenders S02 was planned, nor does one look likely. Depending on how you felt about S01, your mileage varies on this news…

  • Official confirmation direct from Patty Jenkins of Kristin Wiig joining WW2 as Cheetah. I’m intrigued!
  • Karl Urban confirmed that, as suspected, Alex Garland not only wrote Dredd, but stepped in and directed it once the director was canned.

  • Welp, pre-FX aside, Shazam’s costume does indeed appear to be the classic one, with the ubiquitous fine texture weave I hate so much. The fake muscles are weird, but I like the way they handled the lightning bolt, and the cool nod to the golden age books with those Talky Tawny symbols at the cape. The cape design itself, with the stiff hood, is creating a weird massing to his upper half, something I’ve worried about when designing a similar vibe on some TRDL characters with hoods…
  • Rumors are afoot that Jessica Drew may be brought into Spider-Man 2 as a female lead. I’d be down with it. Super down!
  • Neat: Jon Favreau has been announced as helming a Star Wars live action show, presumably for the new streaming service.
  • Mackenzie Davis from Halt and Catch Fire (and more recently, Blade Runner 2049) may have been tapped for Terminator 6… which bodes well for Terminator 6…
  • Elseworlds may be dead… but Black Label is new, and is basically the same thing. I like that Wonder Woman, if nothing else.
  • I love that Westworld not only embraces their obsessive fan community of conspiracy theorists and plot hypothesizers (like this guy) they are actively involving them/us in S02.
  • Reshoots on Deadpool 2… after bad test screenings… thats not good. As nice as the current pedigree technically is (re: our recent podcast about Atomic Blonde and John Wick 2) I wonder what we lost when Tim Miller left.
  • NEED
  • I remain uninterested in Superman comics, but I think BMB is right: optimism is what sets him apart from other characters, and needs to be the focus. All Star Superman was successful in this way.
  • I am SO DOWN with the Morrison/Quitely New X-Men costumes happening here. FINALLY.
  • Lastly, Lego Pacific Rim sweding! Excellent. I’d rather watch that.

Luke Stargruber – Robots Root 21 Feb 2018

Watch out for broken space glass! It’s Robots Root!

  • Welp. I think they may be getting my ill-gotten gains.
  • I love this sort of thing: half-remembered Star Wars
  • FINALLY sane minds prevail on those white eyes… Just imagine if the last two Batmen had them…
  • Jock’s Mondo poster for Empire is finally available, and it is as glorious as I hoped. His rejected piece is just as good.
  • As a kid that played Lazer Tag, among other games like it, I really like the concept applied to Harry Potter wands.
  • New Legion season starts in March. This is both hot and terrifying. As usual. Aubrey Plaza.
  • Danny Boyle directing Bond? Well. Possibly a good thing. Not as good as a Nolan version though, surely.
  • The teaser for the new Netflix series reboot for Lost in Space looks like a reimagining and a completely different direction, and I quite like it. Great cast too. Design work looks solid so far. CANT WAIT TO SEE THE BOT.

  • According to the production crew, this is a close reference on the film version of Shazam/Captain Marvel’s costume.
  • I still have no faith in the Krypton series, but how sad is it that their version of Braniac looks better formed and designed than any villain in the DCEU?

That’s all for now. Back to the ventilation system…

An Elaborate Cat Food Dinner with my Friend – Robots Root 16 Feb 2018

This, from those Skynets that brought you the Predictive Text Harry Potter chapter… ST:TNG via Predictive Text AI. Read the whole thing. It’s amazing.

Meanwhile, in space:

That’s it for this guy. Off to get Mexican…
