The Sun is Getting Low in the Sky Big Guy HEY WAIT – Robots Root 10 Jan 2018

Robot’s Root for 10 January 2018 – a roundup of stuff and things that may or may not be happening…

  • Adding Matt the Radar Tech into SW: Battlefront II is the best anything ever for today. I’m sold.
  • Apparently, if you want to avoid some legal difficulty, owning firearms with the Punisher logo on them is a bad idea. Especially pink ones… I guess. What about swords? What are the rules on Punisher logos?
  • Black Lightning isn’t a character I’m overly familiar with, but the fact that the live action show has been launched is a good thing, I think. Now, Thunder, his daughter, has a design element I really appreciate: a TRDL design style high collar! Ha! Stoked.
  • More trailer action for the new Black Widow film, Red Sparrow… WAIT. The poster, up top, I quite like, with the focus on the eye.
  • DeWanda Wise has joined the stellar cast of Captain Marvel. No word on the character, though wouldn’t it be interesting if there’s a Binary component to this script? Anyway, she’s rad as hell, so that’s a thing.
  • How is it that the Workaholics guys can just make whatever film they want at this point? It’s like a tighter band version of the Rogen gang.
  • Listen, I had high hopes for Robin Hood… but it’s starting to give me a Ladyhawke vibe. I mean, I had low hopes. But now I have lower hopes.
  • EVERYTHING about this film.
  • Gifted, which I have not started, has been granted a second season… and has lost the Singer factor, obviously. As has Legion.
  • Ever wanted to play a Bugbear? Now you can.
  • Love Game of Thrones and frostbite? GOOD NEWS.
  • Runaways has been renewed for S02 on Hulu, despite not having finished S01. I feel like it fell apart towards the back half, but it’s still serviceable. Not that this can be said for that abysmal looking Inhumans series. Guh.
  • Here’s a great interview with Mike Mignola on an array of subjects.
  • Collider claims Tim Miller is developing a Kitty Pryde film. I’m OK with it. Supposedly Drew Goddard’s X-Force film is scheduled to begin production soon as well.
  • Han Solo mayyyyyyy have just gone back in for 3 more weeks of reshoots… pretty late in the game. Ron Howard knows what he’s doing, so no panic. Other than the general anxiety about this film existing in the first place, I guess…
  • This one took me by surprise: Derrickson of Doctor Strange may be cooking a live-action adaptation of one of my favorite cyberpunk books of the 80s, Effinger’s ‘When Gravity Fails’, which is set in a futureshock Middle East. INTERESTING.
  • who doesn’t love fake amusement parks?
  • Mantic is preparing a Hellboy tabletop game! Stay tuned for Deeplydapper’s slavish review of said game in a year…
  • Finally, The Tick is returning, meaning I need to catch up in a hurry…

That’s it for today! Kris and I are both smashing atoms to get ready for Heroes and Villains Fanfest/ Walker Stalker Con this weekend in Portland. Come see us at tables 201-202 if you attend!

Youre Gonna Get Some Hop Ons – Robots Root 17 May 2017

Of course the important news of the day, moreso than impeachable offenses and wonky missiles and health care class warfare and space aliens beached in Indonesia, but no less as inevitable as any of those: officially official confirmation of AD S05. I mean, we knew it was coming, but I’m glad it’s here. In bits and pieces, we’ve learned that Hurwitz is inspired by the election disaster, and that he’s returning to ensemble scenes instead of the ‘follow each character around’ standalones. But also, wow, 2018. I looked it up: the S04 experiment was 2013. I can’t believe it will have been five years.

Meanwhile, THIS HAPPENED:

  • In some strange alternate reality, Robert Zemeckis, Sam Raimi and Matt Vaughn are supposedly in the running for the brutally underdeveloped and problematic Flash film. Why and how is any of that possible.
  • Look. I want Star Trek: Discovery to succeed. I always want these projects to somehow work. And on the face of it, I like this photo. I like the actors, and I really like the old school tricorder in the holster. But really? ENOUGH REY FOR YOU??
  • And look, I have no problem with hyperbole in film promotion… especially when it’s a translation from another language… but this promo material for Last Jedi cracked me up. Everyone’s focusing on how ‘THE BIGGEST SHOCKING REVEAL IN THE HISTORY OF SHOCKING REVEALS EVER EVER WILL BE REVEALED!’ language, but what I thought was funny was the assertion that things got serious once they killed Han Solo. You know, because the deaths of millions in the hand-wavy blowing up of a solar system wasn’t a tragedy or anything.
  • Slaughterhouse Rulez… I mean I’d already be in just because of the pedigree, but I do like that premise. Shithead power schoolkids getting lovecrafted to death while being shitheads? Sounds great!
  • I’m amused by the reference that by the end of Defenders, it will feel like The Hangover… because I don’t know about you, but my drinking increased progressively as I worked through Iron Fist.
  • I wasn’t going to watch any more trailers for Battle for the Toleyou of the Preparation for the Planet of the Apes, but then I did anyway. Looks kick-ass, of course. I didn’t like Woody Harrelson as much in the earlier trailers, other than shaving in front of his troops, which is always a winning move… but here, I love him ranting that (presumably) Caesar is ‘too emotional’ hahahahaha
  • Best quote ever, regarding the sensational lawsuit over blind date texting during GOG2: ““While damages sought are modest, the principle is important as defendant’s behavior is a threat to civilized society,” the suit said.
  • Here’s the first promo material for the new Hellboy film, which features, uh, Hellboy Hellboying around… notable only because hey, it’s new Mike Mignola art, and we need that in this world.
  • For the ultra-rich cosplaying Iron Man fan in your life: dig this concept armor

That’s all for today. Back to mixing your sloshy martinis…

Robots Root – Because Vespas Amirite 8 April 2017

In this edition of Robot’s Root, many things happen. But none are as interesting or profound as Deadpool riding the Rainbow Bridge on a Vespa.

But we’ll give it a go…

  • Here’s a wonderful collection of pickup lines generated by AI. It’s glorious. My personal favorite: “I have a cenver? Because I just stowe must your worms.”
  • Another great interview discussing America Chavez and her new ongoing from Marvel. Gay, Latina, aggressive, modern. Very cool.
  • This, on Inhumans: it will be an entirely revolutionary supers series never seen before on TV (unlikely); also, the Royal Family have been deposed and are in hiding in Hawaii (OK) the one bright spot is that this means Maximus on the throne and lots of scenery chewing by Iwan Rheon.
  • Mignola has a new book coming out from Dark Horse; it’s a vampire story and should be sufficiently surreal. Art will be by Warwick Johnson-Cadwell. Check out his blog: another wacked-out style for the Mignolaverse and I approve.
  • You have probably heard before that Henry Cavill wore the original Reeves Superman kit in his audition for Man of Steel. I always wondered how that would look. Not great, as it happens. Granted that was 100lbs of steroid meat early and it was a dated 70s nylon material or whatever.
  • I’m still attempting a media blackout on Ghost in the Shell (and by the way, I know one person who said they LOVED it… and they are even Asian… completely going off script) but here’s an interesting look (in the hero image) of early concepts with Margot Robbie in the title role. Interesting. Looks super hot. But then again, obviously.

That’s all for today. As a reminder, Kris of Deeplydapper is at Cherry Con in Salem, Oregon this weekend. If you are in the neighborhood, go buy stuff or bring him booze or both!

Let me tole you: if I didn’t have kids in the home, and DID have $899 laying around…

Meanwhile:

– As much as I crave new Hans Zimmer soundtracks, this interview, reposted across various sites, warmed my heart a bit, because I share a devotion to the Nolan Batman films as well. It’s a very intimate and purposeful connection, the soundtrack developed for that trilogy and the material itself. Nolan and Zimmer work well together, thematically (witness Inception and Interstellar for examples outside of the superhero genre) and when Zimmer did the Man of Steel soundtrack, while it was excellent and distinct, it was lending some of that former world’s pedigree to the new films in a way I found disconnected. link!

– Sony wants to proceed with fast-tracking Venom, without a script or director… in the post-Marvel-deal era, what do YOU want from a Venom film? I can’t decide. I really don’t like the character outside of Spidey using the suit and then slowly going batty from the symbiote’s influence. Once it jumped to other hosts and became 90seriffic, I was out. I do like the black ops version from recent years in the comics, but I don’t see how it would translate. link!

– Similarly, WB / DC seem intent on keeping the Flash moving forward (heh) despite multiple issues with the pre-production. That’s not a good sign. link!

– RIP Bernie Wrightson. That escalated fast.
Not my artistic influence, and I didn’t read a lot of his stuff, but I always admired it from a technical level and enjoyed reading about his convention persona. link!

– We’re doomed. More. link! Mega-rich oligarches in powered armor!

Your random Mike Mignola block-rockin art used as a bossbot’s iphone screen for today.

– I’m generally not a fan of cosplayers photographed and then given a bunch of post FX. I like the craft of the costuming itself, and that’s as far as I go. However, this is really well done. link!

– Apparently Hela knows capoeira in the new Thor film. I appreciate it’s a gladiator road trip movie, but that’s quite a diversion from the comics. Then again, probably a welcome one. Stand around and glower megagod types are boring on film. link!

– Good news for this guy, having just finished Peaky Blinders S03… S04 is due to begin production, and Tom Hardy will return. link!

– So Fox’s X-Men show for broadcast TV? The one with a family on the run with a mutant child, which seems to have little to know recognizable X-anything in it except for Sentinels? Is it going to be called Mutants on the Run? MutantsSuxxxx? Mutant? Nope. GIFTED. Srsly. I was gifted. I had to do more homework. That is all. link!

Image
Here’s your random Black Adam speculative rendering for today, by Chris Diem. Love it. Great proof of concept…

– Henry Cavill is on board for MI: 6. That’s interesting! I hope he’s a villain. Not a team member who betrays them, but a proper villain. link!

– How strange the wheel is… Matt Vaughn gave the X-Men franchise a brief moment of hope, before getting forced out by Bryan Singer. Now, after doing his own thing (Kick Ass, Kingsmen) he’s back in the big studio system’s favor for supehero tentpoles, being supposedly courted for the next Superman film. If true, that’s something to be modestly optimistic about, similar to what happened with batman. link!

Micro-Review: Blade Runner in the Wild and etc 9 March 2017

Micro-Review: Blade Runner in the Wild
A few weeks back I had the opportunity to see an outdoor showing of Blade Runner, accompanied by our own One Lung. It was pretty amazing. The cut was the director’s edition, no voice-overs, no happy ending.

Image
I got their early, expecting it to be packed, being a small outdoor viewing area with limited seating, and a hipster neighborhood in a hipster town (SF)… what I hadn’t anticipated was the fear of FREEZING, as it was extremely (regional context) cold and very windy, and the previous night’s original showing date was canceled due to heavy rain.

Image
As a result, I was sitting out there for about 40 minutes before Lung showed up, tucked into my blankets and snow gear, ha. The guys from Fort Point Brewery were on hand wth IPAs so I had one of those, and once Lung arrived I ordered a pizza from a deep dish place up the street.

Image
The pizza time ran long due to Saturday night crowds, so I missed a chunk of the film, after Leon’s test and up until Rachel shows up at Deckard’s house. So no owls for me. However, in the meantime, my handy Dharma flask from Deeply Dapper kept me warm! The pizza was excellent, the film was especially immersive, being outdoors in a high traffic area, where we had a line of honking cars and yelling pedestrians, and lots of lights and activity, just at the peripheral of the screen. It was like a poor man’s Star Tours, but in an expensive city and with less intended motion.
So awesome.

Meanwhile:

– Who doesn’t need ALIEN tiki mugs in their lives?
link!

– The first review of Iron Fist is in, and it isn’t… favorable. Wow. I’m still optimistic. I seemed to have tolerated Cage’s slow spots and dubious final boss more than most. But I think when you already have a street level martial artist (Daredevil) it is hard to make IF compelling unless you go WHOLE HOG with the asian mysticism… but from the trailers, and this review, it sounds more like another run at Stark, boardrooms, and whining. We’ll see. At least it’s going to be better than the ABC stuff.
link!

– GREAT ‘Different Spider-Man Comic’ … 100% MINIMUM ACCURATE

This remains my favorite standalone Hellboy image ever. Ever ever? Ever EVER. I had a print of it years ago, long destroyed, and I had an original pen sketch of similar profile, which was also destroyed due to UV foolishness. Love it.

Midnight last night… can’t wait! Really well reviewed so far…

In other news…

Image
And you know, watching this clip, it seems like they have a lot of personality and fun in the shows. I don’t know, I can’t get into them when i try to watch them, but I kind of like that they exist. Benoist as Supergirl and whatsisface as Flash are standouts in that regard.

The Best There is at What He Does for DC I Guess – 160830

Image
So I was waiting to see of this was debunked or proven to be a trolling exercise by Batfleck, but it’s still live, so maybe. I don’t get the pan to the Titan cooler, but frankly, like Deathstroke or not, it’s cool in concept because it’s not one of the traditional early Bat villains, and it is another stab deep into DC team book history. Everyone assumed it was a Justice league reference, but it could also be a nod to future we-swear-its-not-arkham-asylum Batman solo stuff. Anyway, I like that it exists and that he posted it.
https://twitter.com/BenAffleck/status/7 … 7940746245

Image
That said, it reminds me of THIS, which is even better:
https://twitter.com/Mleeds2048/status/7 … 8733086720

Image
This is a character I never cared about. He was sort of like proto-Punisher to me: hard to rationalize a superkiller supervillain in a colorful kit when he’s bouncing around Teen Titans books and liked to double as a swashbuckler. But more modern takes on him have looked a bit better.

Meanwhile…

Image
ITEM: Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick claim to be developing a true we swear its happening its actually good forget that aborted series we swear sequel with the original cast, meeting with Woody Harrelson and hopefully including the rest of — well, Ok, including Emma Stone. Actually, just Emma Stone. Zombies aren’t even needed…
I’ve said too much.

ITEM: This short by Thor 3’s Taika Waititi was the talk of Comicon, and while I don’t find it as funny as I’m supposed to, there were a couple of gems. It’s fun to see both Hemsworth, and Marvel, allow Thor to be deprecating in this way. Taking perfection down a few relatable notches goes a long way.
http://geektyrant.com/news/watch-thor-r … -civil-war

:::

Image
ITEM: I’m more than a little annoyed at Fuller’s note that only two universes can exist in ST: one with Sulu straight, and one with Sulu gay. This being Fuller, I have to think this was a sarcastic comment taken out of context and bled of intent. But let’s focus on the positive: I like that it will be a female protagonist, but even more, I like that the primary focus of the story will be a first officer, not a captain. I’ll take anything not a captain. In fact, my last Star Trek RPG campaign, which was 30 years ago and predates the Tactical Combat game, involved following red shirts around, so I’d go further.

:::

Image
ITEM: I’m generally one of those guys that likes a Rogue’s Gallery. I certainly ran my Marvel RPG campaigns that way. Just pile the goons on and see who lives. I like the rumors that Batman will feature him busting out of Arkham… I certainly want this sort of thing from Iron Man stories… and I’ve been partial to Flash’s Rogue’s Gallery as well. It’s a good way to try and scale down an over-powered hero particularly if they work smart (well…) so far we’re hearing Golden Glider and Captain Cold. Uh, well the comic reader (and pin-up artist) in me likes the idea, but a live action skater? I have to assume they’d give her a jetpack or quantum boots or WTF.

Oh look! I’ll just leave this here…

What I like about Jason King’s piece here is not the Joker, which frankly rubs me every which wrong way, but Harley, because it pairs the smeared makeup look that I liked on Robbie, with a twisted and shifty half-lidded gaze that puts me on alert. Nice!

And here’s another rare Mignola Moment: Humunculus with… a deployable parachute?

I Will Not Kill You – 11 Aug 2016

Well, I’ve been waiting all day for this one. No disappointments, other than that they should have never revealed Vader, period. But hot damn.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frdj1zb9sMY

Image
Watch carefully for this scene!

Meanwhile, somewhere in space, this is happening:

Image
ITEM: Brad Kremer just released a digital animated homage to the opening sequence in Akira, and it burns, IT BURNS. With white hot rage that i cannot see a digital or live action version of this film that is this faithful to the imagery and tone that made the original OAV so good.

“This project started many years ago when both Dean and I lived on Tybee Island. I came to Dean with the idea to do a tribute “trailer” to Akira. As a long time fan of the original film he of course loved the idea! As we brainstormed the story that we wanted to explore from the film we settled on focusing primarily on the bike. The Akira bike is one of those iconic symbols that still remains relevant today similar to the Millennium Falcon or Marty McFly’s beat up DeLorean.
Since that first day when Dean and I began this journey we have both moved a number of times. But we always kept the project alive with a lot of late nights (mostly from Dean), re-edits and re-renders, and a lot of discussions about how to improve it. And so, after countless hours of modeling and rendering we are ready to share with you this short tribute to the masterpiece that Katsuhiro Otomo created and shared with us so many years ago. We hope you enjoy!”

Image
ITEM: Die Antwoord have taken to IG to accuse David Ayers and his design team of apeing their steez. I think it’s mostly a stretch. But three watches, hey!
http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-enter … ebook-post

:::

Image
ITEM: Meanwhile, Ayers describes SS as an ‘anarchic punk rock art film’ and states it was never envisioned as an R-rated film, which we know. I can’t help but think he is protesting long and hard that there wasn’t a hellstorm of studio interference after BVS in the editing room, but I also think he’s been savvy ie. anti Trank, and resisting the defensive urge to bite the studio hands that fed him. Which actually isn’t very punk rock… but look, I think when they sign on to these big tentpoles they go in knowing the final product will be a mutation beyond their original vision, and some directors, like Ayers, takes it as part of the game, and considers it behind the curtain business not to be vented about, and others are less prepared, and complain. And I say all this, prior to writing or recording my review of the film, as someone who saw many flaws, or particularly missed opportunities, and especially noticed signs of heavy editing… but still REALLY had fun, so haters gon’ hate, and I appreciate Ayers for standing up for the commercial product he created. Additionally, I like his connections between choice and addiction, though it wasn’t as apparent in the film. PS, he indicated Joker killed Robin, not Harley.
http://geektyrant.com/news/david-ayer-d … -art-movie

Also, also, laughably these dudes are trying to sue because of not enough Joker, etc. I love it. Good luck, kids. It is QUITE apparent they cut a lot of Joker out of it, and not just from Leto’s running commentary, either. The trailer material alone, the narrative… and in fact, as an aside I’ll talk more about later, I LIKE that what they DID leave in paints the Joker/Harley romance as a love affair rather than a perpetual mindfuck of domestic violence.

ITEM: FINALLY Hot Toys is launching their Daredevil stuff… so I can understand how to draw that armor properly.

ITEM: Iron Doom’s whole armor is weak, save for being matte finish… but on the other hand, his hood and the fact that the mask is chrome are SICK.

Rad Big Trouble poster

Adult Mathilda by Connie Valentina

We have a Marvel Superhero Squad themed version of Chutes and Ladders at the house. Inexplicably, Cyclops is down with not one, but TWO, legs of Renfaire mutton.

NEW RULES

Image
WOW. Steam X-Men from Granov. Love it.

Image
One of the first Harley themed comic covers that really nails the character.

Image
Finally, an illustration of the new Batman design I can tolerate… by Jock of course.

Image
New Hope poster art by Karl Fitzgerald. I’m stunned.

Image
Image
Two great pieces of art from the Mike Mignola fan group on FB… the former, just rad for being a flower in a dome with mystery pipes, and the latter a master class of color theory.

Image
My version of ROBOT GANGSTER and their version differ somewhat.

Image
Super-awesome interpretation of the Bat-Pod by Sean Murphy

Image
Spidey + Ello Asti = HARDSTANCE.

Image
Finally, another great Die Hard commemorative piece by Chris Weston

Drinking with Skeletons and other things – 14 July 2016

Image
I’m sad Hellboy is at an end, for now anyway, though I’m WAY off the back in my reading. I have been catching post-mortems (so to speak) on the whole BPRD empire of concepts and stories and books and how Mignola’s work and process changed over time, and I owned, albeit briefly, the Masterpiece Editions Kris talked up so much, which had great process material in them. This pic here captures it all in one image. Look at that…the style evolution is fascinating.

Meanwhile

ITEM: Everything about this. I mean, I could do with less of the synth 80s wrong singing, but everything else. EVERYTHING ELSE. “They did some rapes” … “New War Request” … etc

ITEM: Unquestionable optimism from this guy over Guy RItchie’s gritty looking Arthur film. Needs more hot pink, though.

Image
ITEM: Saw this in the stoe yesterday… setting aside the general level of culture shock that they can just create tie-in cereals on the fly these days whereas when I was a kid it was a huge deal if it ever happened… WHAT THE SHIT where’s the marshmallow helmets or whatever!?

:::

Image
This is amazing.

That’s all for today… back to avoiding science nazis…
