Have You Ever Danced With Shermin-Williams in the Pale Moonlight? – Robot’s Root 11 Feb 2018

I don’t know what to make of this Todd Phillips 80s Pre-Joker movie with Jaoquin Phoenix. I mean, I like when they experiment. But DCEU has such a low track record as far as experimenting with VISION. On the other hand, a film about that whole Vision Family in Suburbia book would be legendary. The image above, though, from a set of fan arts, really appeals to me… or peels… I love the flaking paint situation happening.

Meanwhile, these things:

  • When your director backs out of He-Man because they’re too busy with… Krypton… then you KNOW its serious.
  • Even deleted scenes are hilarious. Ragnarok still owns me.
  • This deleted scene from JL is actually pretty good, from a world-building standpoint. It shows a newly revived Kal-El wandering the halls of his old ship, and as he approaches, it automatically offers various resources for him, including the all-black supersuit and the Kryptonian battle armor… internally consistent-ish with Man of Steel. I appreciate that.
  • The winner of that huge 10-year Class Photo MCU situation is clearly Benedict Wong, because player brought a pocket watch on a vest chain.
  • More stuff showing consistency with the McQuarrie front end on the Falcon. Even if it is all part of the longer front end ‘docking module’ which works fine for me, I just don’t know what to make of images like this, below, where it’s longer but there’s a slot. Maybe the central spine is also a modular element than can be removed, separately from the longer vice clamp bits. Maybe, though, these other images are just earlier in the production design… or possibly fake. These days, who knows. This example below, which has been around for months, is the most mystifying. It looks too consistent to be a total fake, so I wonder if it was just earlier in the production. Because it deviates too much from what we’ve seen now. Wrong dish antenna, different front end, no blue and white paint… it does have the turret.

That’s enough for today. Back to rolling housepaint over my face to appear edgy.

Well, looks like Jeff Goldblum wasn’t being courted for the Spider-Man villain after all. Apparently he’s been cast as the Grandmaster, one of Marvel’s space-LSD-era’s wierder demigods, and I’ll hazard a guess, the one responsible for a Planet Hulk type situation in Thor: Ragnarok.

Grandmaster, or as I used to call him, Gamesguy

In an interview about his acclaimed new show Lady Dynamite, Hurwitz confrmed everyone’s on board for an AD Season 5… but more interesting to me at this juncture: they recut Season 4 as a 22 episode traditional season of AD with the cast and scenes interwoven and the narration redone. Agent Carter is looking grim for S03. Low ratings, largely due to them delaying it on the schedule for so long, combined with greenlighting the Most Wanted spinoff of SHIELD made it seem like threes a crowd, sounds like. Which sucks, because, you know, we have such a surplus of complex, empowered female leads AND period adventure stories.

This will be near and dear to Kris aka Deeplydapper’s heart, but a brief sampling of awesome fantasy movies… not action fantasy like Lord of the Toles, but rather old school fairytale fantasy. And, while I love Princess Bride and continue to be unable to parse Labyrinth, I was surprised to read about Stardust… with Matthew Vaughn over Neil Gaiman featuring Claire Danes and MOTHERFUCKING DAREDEVIL… so yeah, guess I’m watching that!

I like the premise of this one.

The story focuses on a group of eccentric international assassins who become fed up with Gunther, the world’s greatest hitman who also happens to be an arrogant show-off, and decide to kill him. Their master plan, however, quickly turns into a series of embarrassing encounters as Gunther always appears one step ahead.

Plus, for those keeping track at home, this cast!

Cobie Smulders (The Avengers), Bobby Moynihan (SNL), Paul Brittain (Hotel Transylvania 2), Kumail Nanjiani (Silicon Valley), Randall Park (The Interview), and Ryan Gaul (Identity Thief).

And that’s including Schwartzenegger scenery chewing…

Thinking a lot about a comment I read online the other night, in the comments on an io9 article about SWVIII stuff, where people were going on and on about how Disney should dump the Prequels from continuity… someone pointed out that SW isn’t exclusively for 40 year olds. There are now two generations of kids who grew up with Prequels not only being canon, but being THE THING HAPPENING at the time. And it made me think, there’s a new generation, my kids, maybe, who as they age may be focused on the new Disney films and even look down on the original trilogy (admittedly, warts and all)… though I’ve done my duty in showing them all the films. Anyway, this was a good opinion piece video on nostalgia and hype in the SW world.

Lastly, on last week’s Robot-Kraken Podcast, I challenged Deeplydapper to name a comic project that, by changing one member of the creative team, would have turned it from a hot mess into something he’d love. For mine, I chose artist Olivier Coipel to do the Iron Man run from the #170s-#199 or so, leading into #200. This was an incredibly influential period of Iron Man continuity, thanks to Denny O’Neil and co. Stark’s descent into alcoholism, his loss of the company to Stane, Rhodey in the armor, Stark rebuilding his old gray suit… leading up to the final confrontation with Stane, in the classic Silver Centurion vs. Iron Monger battle. The art on those final issues was good, but I never could get down with Luke McDonnel’s work on the majority of the issues in this period. It was influential in leading me to draw so much Iron Man myself (badly)… it’s just my opinion, my preference… anyway, here’s an example of how awesome Coipel’s Iron Man (and Stark) can be. Granted this is fairly contemporary stylistically, with inks, colors, etc to match. But you get the idea. The full scene (from Thor #3 in the original CW days) is below.

9. Beat Them With Their Own Shoes For a Mile: According to Frank Miller, whom I admittedly don’t often enjoy in his modern works, the original pitch for Batman: Year One, was so dark thanks to Darren Aronofsky’s input, that the studio panicked.

“It was the first time I worked on a Batman project with somebody whose vision of Batman was darker than mine. My Batman was too nice for him. We would argue about it, and I’d say, ‘Batman wouldn’t do that, he wouldn’t torture anybody,’ and so on. We hashed out a screenplay, and we were wonderfully compensated, but then Warner Bros. read it and said, ‘We don’t want to make this movie.’ The executive wanted to do a Batman he could take his kids to. And this wasn’t that. It didn’t have the toys in it. The Batmobile was just a tricked-out car. And Batman turned his back on his fortune to live a street life so he could know what people were going through. He built his own Batcave in an abandoned part of the subway. And he created Batman out of whole cloth to fight crime and a corrupt police force.”

I’d pay good coin for THAT.

There’s more in this interview…

Loved this quote: “nybody who thinks Batman was fascist should study their politics. The Dark Knight, if anything, would be a libertarian. The fascists tell people how to live. Batman just tells criminals to stop.”

It’s a good read. He’s surprisingly humble about his past mistakes and projects that did or didn’t live up to potential.
