Its the Little Things – 4 July 2018

This is an old poster from a few weeks ago, but I still love it: the swagger, and the use of the popcorn and more importantly the dust or salt, really works for me. Early reviews are very complimentary, so I look forward to seeing it soon.

Meanwhile:

Still on the move, after San Francisco Comic Con and Fandemic Con… I’ve started putting photos up from both shows on our IG (find it at robotkraken_podcast ) but there’s still a lot to catch up on.

  • I do wish it talked to you in a mollifyingly calm voice or locked you out of your own house… but as a low-capacity, overpriced flash drive, it’ll do.
  • First pics of Linda Hamilton in the new Terminator filming sneaks, and no surprise, she looks RAD. Meanwhile, Mackenzie Davis just looks like a dirty Robin Wright, but with cyber-stitches.
  • Here’s some prosthetic limb experiments with ‘pain’ sensory input. At the least, tactile feedback is crucial.
  • According to some that have seen it, the upcoming Dark Phoenix trailer is ‘better than expected’ which is high praise. ha.
  • TMNT is headed for yet another reboot. I’m ok with it. There were a few concepts from the Bayification I liked OK, from what i saw, but I’d really like to see something more like the Incredibles style, where the stylization is more creative and animated.
  • The Disney acquisition plan is off and then on and then off and now looks greenlit by both investors and the SEC. I’m stoked. I want those toys played with in those hands.
  • Sylvia Hoeks is NOT who I imagined to take the Tara role in Queen and Country. However, she IS cool and I just love that the film is proceeding.
  • Silk has apparently been greenlit at Sony… look, this is the first one with half a chance. It’s the modern Spider-Woman that the younger set relates to, and while it will still feel like a Spider-Man knock-off, at least it has a female, and Asian, in the lead role. And if they run with Tiffany Espenson from the Spider-Man: Homecoming casting, I’m even more into it.
  • The fact that the news sites are running with this story that Ultron could have had a bigger, badder, better final act shows how blah the original was in the public consciousness… because a giant Ultron-globbed giant giant Ultron is lame as shit.
  • I mean, kids are dumb… but in this modern world we are descending into, I can actually SEE this being an issue.
  • If you are near Alamo Drafthouse (or one in particular) they are getting into the subscription game.
  • Not sure how I feel about Patrick Stewart supposedly getting close to signing on for another Trek series. I hope it’s the type of thing where he’s an elder Commander or something. I like seeing the passage of time and evolution of characters. I do NOT want to see the Good Ole Crew together on an old timey adventure again, though.
  • How would you feel about a V for Vendetta sequel? The unasked question, I think.
  • This Iron Man/ TRON mashup is A M A Z E. I love it 10,000 x 3 times.

Speaking of catching up, we are a bit behind in the podcast as we were unable to record during the shows and are now all scrambling in different parts of the world for a few weeks. We have a few films to review, as well as the finales of Westworld and Expanse to wrap up… so stay tuned!

Isle of Take My Money Now – Robots Root 15 Mar 2018

Isle of Dogs, 8 days and counting. CANNOT. BREATHE.

  • Jon Hamm joined Pale Blue Dot with Natalie Portman. I love it!
  • Or… maybe Deadpool 2 reshoots are because people want MORE of all the THINGS!
  • this is Super Monster Wolf and its real. Because Japan.

  • “Beep Bloop Bloam… Goodbye to your home” Another great bad lip reading song for The Star War.
  • Fan reaction to Ghostbusters wasn’t awesome, but Paul Feig has doubled down with Powderkeg.
  • I loved the last round of posters, cribbed though they may have been, but on these, they maintain the great weirdly prescient retro colorscheme, and also the drawn aspect of it… very nice.
  • Perfect looks sufficiently beautiful and unnerving. I’m in.
  • This Mondo series celebrating Batman:the Animated Series is wonderful. My favorite was the Cat and the Claw…
  • Danny Boyle has been officially revealed as the director of the final Daniel Craig-based Bond film… by Danny Boyle.
  • I still crave more info about this Russo + Keannu Reeves superhero project.
  • Here’s some interesting (and awesome) casting on Luke Cage S02 with some direct referencing to the storylines of Punisher, at least in the comics.
  • I will always require more Angela Bassett… though really, I don’t think, in all seriousness, you can top Michael B Jordan.

Have You Ever Danced With Shermin-Williams in the Pale Moonlight? – Robot’s Root 11 Feb 2018

I don’t know what to make of this Todd Phillips 80s Pre-Joker movie with Jaoquin Phoenix. I mean, I like when they experiment. But DCEU has such a low track record as far as experimenting with VISION. On the other hand, a film about that whole Vision Family in Suburbia book would be legendary. The image above, though, from a set of fan arts, really appeals to me… or peels… I love the flaking paint situation happening.

Meanwhile, these things:

  • When your director backs out of He-Man because they’re too busy with… Krypton… then you KNOW its serious.
  • Even deleted scenes are hilarious. Ragnarok still owns me.
  • This deleted scene from JL is actually pretty good, from a world-building standpoint. It shows a newly revived Kal-El wandering the halls of his old ship, and as he approaches, it automatically offers various resources for him, including the all-black supersuit and the Kryptonian battle armor… internally consistent-ish with Man of Steel. I appreciate that.
  • The winner of that huge 10-year Class Photo MCU situation is clearly Benedict Wong, because player brought a pocket watch on a vest chain.
  • More stuff showing consistency with the McQuarrie front end on the Falcon. Even if it is all part of the longer front end ‘docking module’ which works fine for me, I just don’t know what to make of images like this, below, where it’s longer but there’s a slot. Maybe the central spine is also a modular element than can be removed, separately from the longer vice clamp bits. Maybe, though, these other images are just earlier in the production design… or possibly fake. These days, who knows. This example below, which has been around for months, is the most mystifying. It looks too consistent to be a total fake, so I wonder if it was just earlier in the production. Because it deviates too much from what we’ve seen now. Wrong dish antenna, different front end, no blue and white paint… it does have the turret.

That’s enough for today. Back to rolling housepaint over my face to appear edgy.

Kellys Got My Number – Robots Root 16 January 2018

Look, I haven’t seen ANY of the Ash vs. Evil Dead series, but this photo of a character called Kelly, played by Dana DeLorenzo, sold me.

Meanwhile, some Robot’s Root… as we prepare to prepare for Heroes and Villains Fanfest / Walker Stalker Con…

  • Surprising precisely no one, Krypton looks like garbage.
  • More Altered Carbon, this time a full trailer. I did not expect the man out of time situation.
  • Another day, another Director defection from Gambit. This, just as Fox released the schedule for the upcoming supers films in active development. It’s still pretty strange that Fox is putting Deadpool 2 within two weeks of Han Solo. Even if the negotiations for final contract on the merger/sale are going to take years, you’d think they’d already be moving these projects a bit farther apart…
  • Natalie Portman just hopped onto Pale Blue Dot, replacing Reese Witherspoon who remains producer. I love ‘affected-astronaut’ stories. They sort of remind me of the ‘haunted sailor’ thing from the 1700s-1800s…
  • Duncan Jones’ Mute hits Netflix next month, along with Altered Carbon. I’m never leaving the house. Except for when I leave the house.
  • It’s early yet, so I’ll be convinced when it’s officially greenlit, but the Black Widow film has been assigned a screenwriter, which is 100% more than they’ve done on this project so far. And, while I would prefer an espionage film similar in tone to Winter Soldier, it sounds like it might be a Lady Liberators situation.
  • I watched the entire thing with Maisie Williams on the show, and it was delightful.
  • They Were Never Here looks AAAAAMAZING
  • I missed the window on this, but be advised:
  • A Shane Black Avengers (60s version?) YES PLEASE.
  • More optimistic talk about the Deadwood film… which I’ll totally accept as fact at this point, because I NEED it.
  • I sold a few prints of Superman: Red Son this weekend, probably a little bit driven by this news
  • Ridley Scott’s The Terror series on AMC feels tailor-made for me. 1800s arctic naval suspense thriller with monster stalkery? YES.
  • These are amazing: Desktop dumpsters, sized for magazines and thereabouts. Ready for your graffiti skills. Or skillz, if you are young (or too old)… and while we’re at it, I also need a Vestaboard, THANKS.

We’re recovering from Heroes and Villains Fanfest/ Walker Stalker Con, but more to follow, including a show roundup…

Blacked Out Black Out – Robots Root 27 Sept 2017

Infuriating! The third and final prequel to the sequel Blade Runner 2049 is out, from an extremely accomplished anime pedigree, but stuck behind the crunchyroll firewall. I’m already being strong-armed into paying for CBS All Access for the Star Treks, so I’m not giving CR any money for this. Outrage! I mean, it isn’t… but it is. Right? Right. Here, for those that have a subscription to that site.

Meanwhile, Robots Root!

  • Annhilation looks A M A Z I N G…. everything I want in a film: mystery, tension, minor key urgent soundtrack, aliens, horror, Natalie Portman. I’m so in. And I lurrrrved Alex Garland’s previous, Ex Machina, so.
  • Unsettling politics in the continuing cultural war against tattoos in Japan (or re-war, I guess)…
  • James Cameron and Tim Miller seem to think they invented the concept of a Terminator’s skin aging… can’t explain the shrunken spine and saggy muscles though ey! EY! Still… and also, what’s with that old saw about body odor and bad breath? I get the former… but where would halitosis be happening on a Terminator? Oh, there I go thinking again. Next film: 2019. Better get crackin! Not getting any younger, the lot of em.
  • I’ve seen two or three of the character posters for Pacific Rim 2, and while I don’t like how humanoid the mecha became, I DO like the graphic design on these posters. A lot.
  • So, fresh off of being booted from Han Solo, Lord and Miller are now developing a film adaptation from the writer of Martian, about a heist on the Moon. Because cyberpunk! I’m in.
  • First look at the female Ghost in Ant-Man and Wasp. Looking ghostly! And female.
  • I’ve yet to comment on ST: Discovery, but I did watch it. My favorite thing so far has been the diversity in design and affect on the new Klingons. Here’s a peek behind the curtain from Face Off’s Glen Hetrick’s production house.
  • Hayley Atwell doing mocap for Avengers 4 perhaps? I’m saying, time travel fuckery!
  • And finally, Lego Grand Theft Auto. You’re welcome!

Thats all for today! Who’s ready for inktober? THIS GUY! Hope to see some sweet art from the rest of you next month, on IG or FB or the like!

I’ve Always Said Gin Cures All Infections – 15 May 2017

Here is the best Alien: Covenant promo material ever. Never to be topped. Ever.

Meanwhile:

LO, Robot’s Root for 15 May 2016 was born:

  • The words no one likes to hear, really: “You are paddleboarding next to approximately 15 great white sharks. They are advising you exit the water in a calm manner. The sharks are as close as the surfline.”
  • New Mutants casting is now confirmed: Split and GoT are involved. Here’s Phil Noto sketching them up, for science.
  • Agents of SHIELD was just renewed for S05. I thought last season was a mixed bag: Ghost Rider LOOKED good but was boring, LMDs were fun, sort of a back door into the Skrull style storyline I enjoy, and the Framework alternate reality stuff involving Agents of Hydra… well I love that mirror universe type stuff. We’ll see what next season offers. I’m hoping some Marvel fandom entirely new.
  • Shades is back for Luke Cage S02. That’s great news, not only because he was the cool villain, at least after the King was lampshaded… but also because he’s like the only one left.
  • Here’s Joss Whedon’s WW script we’ve heard so much about over the years. You be the judge. If you have that sort of time.
  • I don’t want to dive into GOG2 spoilers just yet (we haven’t recorded our review for Robot-Kraken) but I’m enjoying this bullshit about young Kurt Russell being practical FX. Yeah.
  • Is Taika Waititi trolling the interwebs?
  • Jason Bateman just announced he’s signed on for AD S05. More importantly, his Twitter title is ‘friend of Will Arnett’.
  • Have you gotten enough Heroes? I mean Gifted? If not, here’s more.
  • Zuul makes me very happy. This is where young life and older life merge in pleasant ways, culturally.
  • Here’s that Han Solo hair. Looks pretty good.

And with that, I leave you to continue your anti-facehugger preparations. I’m well on my way…

An Enjoyer of Life and other things – 8 June 2016

Image
All hail weird-ass Jeff Goldblum being himself on film again!
“He’s a hedonist, a pleasure-seeker,” Goldblum explained to Empire, while promoting his upcoming film Independence Day: Resurgence, “an enjoyer of life and tastes and smells. I thought, ‘ can do that, I’ll bet!’ I’m working on my part every day.”

Look, I get that The Shallows is just Jaws meets standard girl in peril slasher film meets Blake Lively porno… but for whatever combination of those things, I’m into it.

Check out these concepts for Black Panther. I love the rightmost one, that looks most like a big cat’s nose and snout. I’d have been down with that.

Toby Kebbell says the original cut of FF was great, and dark, and etc. I’m not even in the majority on this film: I didn’t hate it. But hot damn I’d like to see that cut.

Mackenzie Davis joined Blade Runner 2… and in fact, hmmm, she looks a lot like Robin Wright… HMMMMM…. younger and older models of the same replicant?

PS I just saw the Nice Guys… I’ve never been more comfortable with Ryan Gosling in BR2… not even the same style of film in any way, but a great reminder of how good he is.

In other news…

Spencer Wilding, from GoT and Guardians, will be the physical form of Darth Vader in Rogue One. He’s even taller than Prouse and I think has the right imposing mass for the character, who should instill fear on approach. I’m delighted.

Best Marvel news of the week: Black Panther’s future solo film is not envisioned as an origin story. I’m so OVER origin story films, so that’s awesome.

Natalie Portman is out on Thor 3, which isn’t really surprising, and Tessa Thompson is in, as someone ‘superhero-ish’… let the speculation begin. Nice to see more women of non-white ethnicity in these roles in general. Endorsed.

Inhumans is being bumped indefinitely. Between bringing Spider-Man into the fold and the ongoing war with Permutter’s TV division, I’m not terribly shocked. However, SHIELD has firmly established Inhumans as the MCU/TV version of mutants, and did a good job of it, so there’s no reason this can’t jump to film, if they ever just address the power conflict between Permutter (not my favorite) and Fiege. That said, if they would just move all the Marvel properties to Netflix, I’d be even happier.

Three different actors have indicated that AD S05, whenever that happens, will return the cast to an ensemble process in lieu of the schedule-driven solo character arc thing they did for S04 (which I still loved)… so it could be 2032 before this happens, but it’ll be awesome reGARTless.

That’s all for today. Our friend Deeply Dapper nearly did himself in in our podcast session last night, so anyone who has a spare liver, let a brother know. Or a spare bookshelf.
