Deep Fakes and Roguish Rakes – Robots Root 19 Oct 2018

Listen, I’ve been advocating for Han Solo loud and long, but I have to say, it’s surreal and delightful to see this deep fake amalgamation of a youngish Harrison Ford’s face onto this footage.

That said, somewhere in space, this may all be happening right NOW:

  • I wasn’t interested in the Kid Who Would be King until I realized Attack the Block’s Joe Cornish is directing it. So there might be some interesting there there.
  • This piece on nostalgic memory vs reality in comics is a good one: like the writer, I too favored Dakota North at the time, despite not really understanding why. Or rather, for specific reasons beyond the character and story. Because unlike the writer, i DID read the books and still have them, and I hated the art and the story. But I liked the use of a non-supers character in an unusual environment (spy + fashion) for a genre, and also, I really liked the haircut in the banner image. I used her a number of times in the Marvel RPG.
  • Speaking of Marvel, here’s your first live-action view of that new Spidey Suit. Plus parkour. No pressure, dude.
  • What are the chances the Joker film is trolling snoops with this 60’s Batman era Batmobile?
  • I really dig this new Daredevil S03 poster. I LOT. It’s evocative on a number of levels.
  • I only read a few paragraphs of this Prospect review, as I plan to see it with as open mind as possible (already accidentally spoiled something for myself within, dammit tole) but here you go.
  • I’m not a follower of the DC CW stuff, but points for including the black costume for Superman that we should have had in Batman V Superman.
  • Anti-zombie tips you can follow along with at home. I mean, I hope you don’t have to. But still, can’t hurt.
  • I’m not sure what is more news news here: that Flash is delayed, or that WB confirmed they are dumping Cavill and Affleck. I mean, it’s not really news. But still, I’m disappointed. I liked both of those guys.
  • Honest Thief is already an interesting premise (sort of an anti-Heat) but that it comes from the producer’s of the excellent Ozark… even better!

  • Here’s a pretty aesthetically pleasing Battle Angel- Alita poster. I’m into it.
  • Legit fourth wall action here, Sean Bean being the target in the Hitman 2 game.
  • A brief history of Mandalorian representation in canon… it’s all over the place.

That’s all for tonight. Dream of jetpacks and young rogues…

Speaking of Sticky Strands – Robots Root 7 Aug 2018

I like the Japanese poster Venom more than the trailer Venom. All those sticky strands holding the jaw together…

Speaking of sticky strands, THE NEWS:

  • Vantablack rules everything around me…
  • Good buzz coming out regarding Daredevil S03 coming this fall. I’m into it.
  • In the last year I’ve read three or four articles talking about the business of maintaining old CRT arcade machines. Pretty interesting. Outrun was definitely my jam.
  • Disney doesn’t appear to be responding to calls for Gunn’s return. I’m liking that Dave Bautista has taken a career-risking step further and thrown serious shade at Disney about it.
  • The John Wick and 300 folks are working on an Alcatraz movie. I THINK I’m into it. I don’t enjoy prison films, but I do like pressure cookers with some trickery.
  • What I find most interesting about Alex Garland’s new project is the casting. Sonoya made quite an impression on him… and me, of course. Plus, RON!
  • Shogun is coming back, and I’m all for that.
  • Lots of Birds of Prey casting rumors… which all sound fine. I did like Bosslogic’s Black Canary. I mean, I think I do?
  • UGH UGH UGH with prequels that make no sense. Die Hard prequel??? The events of the first film created the character (and it should have been a done in one)… we don’t need a prequel. And 24?? I mean, come on. Of course, I make an exception for Batman. But only if we never see any MAH PARENTS ARE DEADDDDD moments.
  • CBS is gunning for all Trek, all the time. The fact that Patrick Stewart confirmed at the con that he’s coming back for the new show, featuring an older Picard, struck me as both interesting and exhausting shows to me that they really need to strike a new tone and perspective for this show to make it carry weight. Same producers and writers as the current crop of stuff, though. I don’t mind the idea of an older senior command Picard torn with difficult, ore realistic political problems… I’d like to see him weather gray area military issues (or non-military, depending on what version of Starfleet we’re even talking about) in a way TNG never did. Just no more ‘once more unto the breach! bullshit like the films. Let everyone be dead or older and retired. No away teaming. PLEASE.
  • Well, here’s Todd McFarlane critiquing the new Venom for you. Happy Tuesday.
  • Edward james Olmos cut from Predator? HOW DARE YOU SIR.
  • I’m down with Jessica Chastain’s new spy project. MOAR PLS!
  • Lung sent me this: the best papercraft Darth Vader bust ever. Not that I have time or inclination to make it, but I COULD.

Its the Little Things – 4 July 2018

This is an old poster from a few weeks ago, but I still love it: the swagger, and the use of the popcorn and more importantly the dust or salt, really works for me. Early reviews are very complimentary, so I look forward to seeing it soon.

Meanwhile:

Still on the move, after San Francisco Comic Con and Fandemic Con… I’ve started putting photos up from both shows on our IG (find it at robotkraken_podcast ) but there’s still a lot to catch up on.

  • I do wish it talked to you in a mollifyingly calm voice or locked you out of your own house… but as a low-capacity, overpriced flash drive, it’ll do.
  • First pics of Linda Hamilton in the new Terminator filming sneaks, and no surprise, she looks RAD. Meanwhile, Mackenzie Davis just looks like a dirty Robin Wright, but with cyber-stitches.
  • Here’s some prosthetic limb experiments with ‘pain’ sensory input. At the least, tactile feedback is crucial.
  • According to some that have seen it, the upcoming Dark Phoenix trailer is ‘better than expected’ which is high praise. ha.
  • TMNT is headed for yet another reboot. I’m ok with it. There were a few concepts from the Bayification I liked OK, from what i saw, but I’d really like to see something more like the Incredibles style, where the stylization is more creative and animated.
  • The Disney acquisition plan is off and then on and then off and now looks greenlit by both investors and the SEC. I’m stoked. I want those toys played with in those hands.
  • Sylvia Hoeks is NOT who I imagined to take the Tara role in Queen and Country. However, she IS cool and I just love that the film is proceeding.
  • Silk has apparently been greenlit at Sony… look, this is the first one with half a chance. It’s the modern Spider-Woman that the younger set relates to, and while it will still feel like a Spider-Man knock-off, at least it has a female, and Asian, in the lead role. And if they run with Tiffany Espenson from the Spider-Man: Homecoming casting, I’m even more into it.
  • The fact that the news sites are running with this story that Ultron could have had a bigger, badder, better final act shows how blah the original was in the public consciousness… because a giant Ultron-globbed giant giant Ultron is lame as shit.
  • I mean, kids are dumb… but in this modern world we are descending into, I can actually SEE this being an issue.
  • If you are near Alamo Drafthouse (or one in particular) they are getting into the subscription game.
  • Not sure how I feel about Patrick Stewart supposedly getting close to signing on for another Trek series. I hope it’s the type of thing where he’s an elder Commander or something. I like seeing the passage of time and evolution of characters. I do NOT want to see the Good Ole Crew together on an old timey adventure again, though.
  • How would you feel about a V for Vendetta sequel? The unasked question, I think.
  • This Iron Man/ TRON mashup is A M A Z E. I love it 10,000 x 3 times.

Speaking of catching up, we are a bit behind in the podcast as we were unable to record during the shows and are now all scrambling in different parts of the world for a few weeks. We have a few films to review, as well as the finales of Westworld and Expanse to wrap up… so stay tuned!

Ben Barnes (“The Chronicles of Narnia”) joins the cast as Billy Russo, Frank’s Castle’s best friend from his days in the Special Forces. He runs a successful private military corporation called “Anvil.”

Ebon Moss-Bachrach (“Girls”) will play Micro, a former NSA analyst whose secrets may be of great value to Frank Castle and everyone around them.

And Amber Rose Revah (“Indian Summers,” “Son of God”) joins as Dinah Madani, a highly-trained sophisticated Homeland Security agent who is vexed by the Punisher.

ITEM: More casting and more sightings. Maybe it’s all Punisher, maybe the sightings are Defenders as I posited yesterday. Who’s to say? WE’LL NEVER KNOW, FRIENDS.

Best thing about this non-news is that we’re at a point in this era of scooper/spoiler hunting that pull quotes are coming out of AARP.

Everything about this. AI generated movie script after being fed sci-fi screenplays… acted out… it’s amazing. And so weird. They did a great job trying to make sense of it.

I like a haggard Wolvie and a toreback Xavier (if I must have any at all) though that better not be the aforementioned possible X-23…

Speaking of all for it: DC’s Super Hero Girls is now getting a film. I’m not one that thinks that female supers need to be heavily modified in order to be of interest to girls, any more than male characters. But I’m well aware that things for girls are marketed as cutesy and things for boys are marketed as violent and the way the genders are presented in projects for the opposing gender often lead to stereotyping that our kids don’t need any more than they already get around them. For better or worse, the rise of largely girl, semi-flirty/giggly/aesthetics and social dynamics based shows for young girls has at least led to shows marketed to them as opposed to prior dearth of that content. What I like about this product line is that the characters are given more real world or less skimpy uniforms, and engage with powers, intelligence and personality, rather than some of the less desirable tropes. Not perfect, but not bad. I like how some of the females are portrayed in Teen Titans or Young Justice cartoons for example, but the fact is, it’s 2 girls and a sea of bros.

Carlos Fabian Villa is doing a series of 90s X-Men portraits which are standouts because they manage to keep me from vomiting. Not even Warren Lau pulled that off. Not true, i’m sure he did. But hot damn. I recall seeing Villa’s DotD character awhile back, which i adored enough to save as a reference piece.

The details are hazy at this point, but it sounds like there MAY be a Scarlet series in development for Cinemax? I only got a few issue sin before I couldn’t find any more to read, but I have to think that a major cable adaptation will feel better than Sony’s curious Powers launch.

Cinematographer Larry Fong appears to be growing in confidence in recommending the BVS Ultimate R Rated Supercut. This is only news because any positive press on BVS is news. But what i liked about it was the change of tone to one less defensive and divisive, which I nonetheless empathized with, given how much work was put into the film.
