No Good To Us Dead – Robots Root 4 Oct 2018

My favorite news of the moment is the confirmation that Jon Favreau’s SW TV series will be called The Mandalorian, and have a lone gunslinger vibe. I’ve only scratched the surface of Mandalore in the Clone Wars series thus far, but I’ll be interested to see if it’s another species wearing Mandalorian armor, as with the Fetts, or if it’s a true Mandalorian, who eppear to have a pretty interesting story of their own. Either way, exploring the Outer Reach, shooting to kill, best helmet design in the series, I’m on board…bonus: Pedro Pascal in the live action SW series? YES PLS

Meanwhile, this may be happening RIGHT now:

  • I haven’t watched this, being in back to back meetings all day, but I’m optimistic. Ferrell’s haircut alone! DAPPER. Update: Welp, yep, I AM THE TARGET MARKET.
  • Despite my doubts, they just sold me on the Kingsman prequel. I mean, I didn’t have doubts about it being a prequel… or even about the speculative film’s value… I just figured that Millar was spouting without anything to back it up, given that Kingsman 2 didn’t do very well. But I like the concept of the series and I’m on board. But whoa: Ralph Fiennes?!? Yes please.
  • Want some candy? Yes, of course they do.
  • Bad Birds of Prey news, following on the heels, so to speak, of very good news earlier this week… Rosie Perez appears to have been cast as the Question. Why for the love of R’yleh… I held out this morning for awhile hoping it was a hoax.
  • I don’t know why they keep referring to the uniforms in Dark Phoenix as ‘classic’… I mean, I guess compared to others in the franchise they are, but these are Frank Quitely’s excellent designs from New X-Men thanks. Love it!
  • I don’t need a lot of Luke in my Star Wars IX, but I do dig the concept of a flashback showing him pulling Star Destroyers into orbit. What a great image. Well, THROUGH orbit.
  • Here’s a trailer for Runaways S02. I’m stoked!
  • Hey look: at least Venom is compared (fairly) favorably to Catwoman. But look, here’s a reasonably, contextually, positive review about what’s in the tin.
  • Entourage played the Aquaman movie concept as a riff on big budget supers films with no artistic merit, ie. the ultimate low-brow sellout move with devastating financial and professional risk. But as this look back shows, it mirrored the future reality pretty accurately.
  • Though it’s pretty likely Amazon will pull it once they figure it out, they are allowing Verhooven’s original X-rated cut of Robocop to stream on Prime right now. I need to get on that myself!
  • Disney just greenlit a Lilo and Stitch live action adaptation. I’m on board: great 3d alien and a more powerful non-traditional body image situation for young girls than the more famous Moana. Excellent!
  • This is a cool Millennium Falcom triptych, but I’d like it more if there was NO there there between them. Imply it, don’t show it!
  • Surprisingly, at least one review claims there’s MORE there there to the Titans series, in a way that JUST might be interesting enough to try out. Despite that Starfire.

Thats all for today. We are recording another episode of Robot-Kraken tonight, so if you feel a tingling, happy sensation, it’s probably your collective awareness of our enthusiasms. All hail the TRDL hive mind!

Arm Reloading Since 2018 – Robot’s Root 31 July 2018

All anyone’s talking about (other than that it’s really good and will make a lot of money) regarding Mission: Impossible – Fallout is Henry Cavill’s arm reloads. That was my favorite part of the trailer as well. It cracks me up so much.

Meanwhile:

  • Tessa Thompson can simply do no wrong. I mean, when I can’t even SEE Chris Hemsworth?  That’s a thing.
  • It’s pretty impressive that the cast of GOG issued a support letter re: James Gunn. That’s a lot of political risk for them, and I like that they committed to it. They avoided outright calling out Disney on the hypocrisy, but the letter was well constructed to be positive rather than reactive.
  • You don’t often see a creator get the rights back to the work made from their original material. Controversies on all sides, but still…
  • I defer further comment until I actually finish Altered Carbon S01, but Anthony Mackie is on board as the lead for S02 and I do like him muchly.

  • Well, uh, I guess that counts.
  • Carrie Fisher’s unused footage being in SW Ep VIII is both kind of a nice touch AND indicative that whatever her original arc was to be, it will still nonetheless be radically reduced, and I think that makes sense, all things considering. I was also intrigued that Gwendoline Christie’s name wasn’t included in the returning cast… I smell a maguffin.
  • This is why the Interwebs were invented.
  • This does not look good, but is trying to be indie-weird-heisty, and this does not look good, and is trying to be edgy-die hardie-actioney. Maybe they should have- wait, I have it. Switch CASTS!
  • Look, I’m in, but also, I just LOVE checking out where all the Jonah Hill went. He’s an example to me of a person whose weight loss fundamentally changed how they look. He doesn’t look like a thinner version of himself, like with John Goodman. He looks like his own cousin or something.
  • From Lung: a horde of Thor related tweets that are glorious.
  • OH MG GOD I NEED ALL OF THESE WHY . THE . FACE!
  • This is NOT what I was expecting for Pedro Pascal’s look in WW 1984…
  • More Venom, less enthusiasms. I already had maybe 3% enthusiasms. And this accent? “Ohh, I havah paower saite.” what is even. And look, Phase 1 era fighting your clone. I just. I mean, even putting Michelle Williams in a plaid miniskirt feels desperate.

Karl the Butcher – Robots Root 8 April 2018

Mot interesting news of the week for me has been the casting announcement of Karl Urban as Billy the Butcher, in The Boys. Many other casting nods within, as well.

Back for an extremely rare Nipponese Robot-Kraken session!

  • Rian Johnson is saying all the right things, in a way, regarding how to make another trilogy compelling and not saturated. Avoiding: ‘Oh, I loved that thing. Oh, I remember that thing!’ On the other hand, I DO love that thing, and remember it. But either way. The idea of making new stories set in the same environment but not with the ‘Skywalker royalty’ involved is a very good thing in my book. Thats a part of why Rogue One may be my favorite film from the series.
  • There’s a lot of memetic 4th wall business happening over Spielberg possibly saying a future Indiana Jones could be female. Beyond the awkward wrongness of ‘Indiana Joan’ (I think an affect of a badly processed verbal pun) it also reminds me of how badly fetishistic and pervy he and Lucas were about the original casting concepts for Marion. But anyway, I’m down!
  • See you in December.
  • Gary Whitta just ‘spontaneously’ released his active treatment for a Last Starfighter remake. I’m OK with it. Especially if it’s not Louis Gossett Jr. involved, which I could never handle.
  • Interesting treatise on why superheroes always fight their evil mirrors. Surprisingly good.
  • Someday, someone’s going to get Tony Gilroy to open up about what happened on Rogue One, and it’s going to be a hell of an interview. He gives no shits, and pulled off a salvage to make an excellent and refreshing Star Wars film in my book, and it’s reallllly tantalizing, imagining the state the Gareth Edwards version was in when he took over. Said as someone who likes Gareth Edwards, even.
  • Y: The Last Man may ACTUALLY become a show. It’s been a LONG process, to say the least.
  • The source material is a bit preachy for my taste, but the Fahrenheit 451 trailer is looking pretty good. It’s all about the casting.
  • What the shit! Netflix and their very deep pockets appear to be circling Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp production company.
  • Pedro ‘Can Do No Wrong’ Pascal just landed a mystery role in Wonder Woman 2… color me intrigued… and in Dornish gold.
  • The Fantastic Four are returning to Marvel as a team book… suspiciously timed to renewed harmony with Fox… could a reasonable FF film be far behind?
  • Fair Warning: I didn’t watch the trailer, as I’m on blackout. But the new Westworld stuff apparently looks like something to a lot of people…
  • I have to say, I’m honestly just nauseated by the allegations about John Kricfalcusi. I feel terrible for these women, and it absolutely colors my appreciation of his work.

I AM baby GROOT – Robots Root 22 August 2017

What I love most about this series of Mondo prints for the BR release of Guardians of the Galaxy 2 isn’t actually Rocket here, which I L O V E… it’s that the Baby Groot piece is smaller in scale. Check it out here.

Meanwhile, it’s Robot’s Root all of a sudden…

  • Here’s a summary of the new film Glass, completing the [surprise] Unbreakable trilogy. I wasn’t interested in seeing the second film, though I enjoyed reading about it… but I’m stoked on this one.
  • Punisher: good lord. What have they done. Chrome bustiers?!? Ah I can’t unsee it.
  • Ed Skrein (Deadpool) has joined the Hellboy reboot as a military dude from BPRD that can shift into a panther or jaguar or what have you. I’ll bite. So to speak. Also, David Harbour’s description of what tone he’s taking with the Hellboy character sounds more in tune with the comics and intrigues me greatly.
  • Pedro Pascal has joined Equalizer 2, along with returning Denzel Washington. I love this guy. I can’t wait.
  • Lung convinced me (with enthusiasms) to break my tenuous blackout on Blade Runner 2049 and watch this new promo. By Crom it’s wonderful. That said, I’m super tired of trailers preceding the trailer, as they do now.
  • I don’t think I’ve begun processing the news that a Joker solo origin story out of DC WB continuity is in development. I get the pedigree of the production. I get the balls in pursuing other versions of these characters. But it seems like such a poor, poor decision. Like, Confederacy poor. Not in continuity stories only work when mainstream viewers are sufficiently familiar with the prime continuity, and trust the studio enough to embrace non-continuity projects on their own terms (see Legion)… and really. Joker ORIGIN? Very few things we need less. Then again, as of today, Matt Reeves is claiming The Batman is out of continuity as well. Huh.
  • Meanwhile, and I know I’m in the minority in seeing some redeeming value in the DCCU Lex Luthor… but apparently his role was cut in Justice league. That’s alarming to me, as his relationship to Steppenwolf and the Mother Boxes was a big thing.

That’s all for now. Back to treating my own post-GoT PTSD… speaking of, our latest podcast is out, covering the most recent two episodes of Game of Toles. And please wish our man Deeply Dapper a happy 21st birthday!

I REBEL and other things 8 April 2016

Image
Look, we’ve covered this in three posts plus talked about it like 33 hours worth (and not even on Robot-Kraken podcast yet) so I’ll just leave this here as a reminder that it’s only been two days or so since the trailer was released, and I already am having fever dreams about it.
Here’s a good analysis from the usual suspect:

This Behind The Scenes/ Easter Eggs/Development video by my man Mr Sunday Movies was pretty good. His Easter Egg video for the film was pretty comprehensive as well. In this one, I was struck by how, on the one hand, concept Doomsday was more interesting proportions (I love drawing beasties with hunch musclebacks and long arms) but on the other, STILL MUTED BROWN. Imagine had they given him a striking blue or green look? I’m so tired of drab designs for major characters.

Cloak and Dagger was one of the projects that a poorly realized April Fool’s announcement someone made had been supposedly greenlit (along with She-Hulk and several others)… however, a few days later it was officially announced as a real series deal for the formerly ABS Family channel, Freeform. I doubt the two were related, but it sucked for the project announcement because I ignored it for days, assuming it was fake.

The Honest Trailer for Force Awakens was good. The trope about it being a clone (so to speak) of New Hope, thats kind of tired, but the rest of it was fun. “Han Solong”… and my favorite, above, Rey’s so poor she has to make her own action figures.

I had this whole elaborate rambling conversation with an interfriend about great female superhero film characters, who our favorites were, etc and the friend was positing that Gadot as WW was the best we’ve had yet. I still argue that Hayley Atwell’s Agent Carter takes it. She’s amazing.

Image
Her ROYAL THIGHNESS indeed.

Seriously, though, between Atwell’s acting, her character’s dialog and story arc, and the thematic material, she owns it.

Unrelated, this cracked me up.

Unrelated, Kingsman 2 is pushing hard on a supposed return of Colin Firth’s character. I suppose if he didn’t need a brain… or an eye… spoiler alert I guess.

Meanwhile, Pedro Pascal has joined the film as Jack Daniels. That takes me back to Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man (WTF WAS THAT EVEN)

This lifesize AT-ST recreation is desirable. I’d use a retractable ladder I think. Side note, I heard a great reference the other day: why do we call them ‘at-ats’ but not these being ‘at-stttttts’

I don’t even get all these random not in continuity projects Marvel’s been doing, around Gwen Stacy. I liked the look of Spider-Gwen, and I wasn’t surprised they’d bring her into the new continuity… but Gwenpool is killing me here. Sells well, or so I read…

To be fair, I only posted because I LOVE the MODOK plushie, there.

A bunch of posters were released for X-Men Apocatole… and then a bunch more. The four horsemen ones were the best, and this was the best of those. Yet, while I’m sure I’ll enjoy this film, it bodes ill that I’m not even motivated to research when it’s coming out…

Meanwhile, I’m ALL ABOUT CIVIL TOLE. I don’t want any more new trailers or reveals. Just get this month over with already.

This Batman fanart, which I’ve lost the reference to, really struck me because the way the arms and cape wings are structured much like a real bat. I love it.

Finally, the new Wonder Woman has courted controversy because gosh, how DARE they show what happens on an island without males… I mean, 2016, and this is still a problem for people. Le sigh.
