No Good to Me Dead – Robots Root 25 May 2018

Mangold… on board Boba Fett?!? I mean, look: I’m part of the generation of fans that irrationally LOVES Boba Fett, but not part of the generation of fans that loves all those clone business. But if they took the right approach, this could be a pretty innovative piece of the extended SW saga. I want a heist and hunt film, come on!

Meanwhile, these items:

  • Regina King leads a new cast for the Watchmen series on HBO, and while the interwebs seem upset that they aren’t just retelling the same story as the film (and book) I’m looking forward to a story set post-Manhattan in the same continuity. Optimism alert!
  • One of my favorite touches in Deadpool 2 was the inclusion of queer characters where it wasn’t a thing. It wasn’t NOT a thing, either. It was about as controversial as Negasonic moving from one hawt haircut to another, as it should be. More on that when we release the Robot-Kraken Podcast, but look, none of it matters, as far as the haters go, and it REALLY matters, as representation for others, so I’m down.
  • ZOMBIE ALERT!
  • Matt Groening’s Disenchantment. What do you think?
  • Predator = Iron Man 3 + Dark Knight
  • The music is a departure, but everything else is spot on. Preacher S03!
  • Nothing is confirmed until its confirmed, but supposedly non-Batman may be joining previous-Batman in Spidey 2
  • Thanks Comcast. Thanks again. And for SPORTS.
  • One half of this John Wick 3 news is acceptable.
  • OK no joke: the finale of Six Feet Under’s final moments still haunts me. It just wrecked me. Somehow the Simpsons parody STILL has an effect.

Reminder, the latest episode of Robot-Kraken is available now: Legion, Expanse, and more! Please do rate and review us on iTunes…

Short Tunic and a Loooooooooong Cape – Robots Root 31 Oct 2017

Robots Root, 64 oz size!

  • Kind of obvious, but I was stoked to see D’Onofrio officially on board in DD S03, especially given the kind of underwhelming, if classic, Born Again plotline. It gives me at LEAST a Kingpin to enjoy.
  • If Gareth Evans does indeed sign on to Deathstroke, that means if nothing else a kick ass fight film. Which seems appropriate.
  • The full Runaways trailer shows some powers, familiar looks, and at least do far isn’t ruining any major surprises comic fans would know.
  • The new Justice League trailer shows Steppenwolf more fully. I wasn’t going to watch, then I realized I’d be overseas when it comes out so things will be spoiled anyway…
  • Um. I mean, I’d still buy one. I love that stuff. But hey, bonuses I guess.
  • Zachary Levi has been confirmed as playing Captain Marvel, I mean SHAZAM I guess at this point, which I’m enjoying. I like the actor, and I think he can bulk up to where it needs to be, as John Krasinski and Chris Prat did. It will be interesting to see if we get a young Billy Batson, or an older one in keeping with the apparent continuity of the DCEU. My favorite of the fan art that came out early this week is above.
  • I don’t watch Supergirl or any of the CW super shows… but wow… check out the costume for new villain ‘Reign’… that’s realllllly badly envisioned. A chattering skull in a super sigil logo on a black version of Supergirl’s costume, plus a Hot Topic mask? GUH.
  • Paramount has been auctioning off costumes and props from the recent Star Trek film. I haven’t talked mush about ST: Discovery yet, as I’m waiting for my cohorts to watch it so we can discuss on the podcast, but one positive, at least in part, has been the overhaul of the Klingon designs. Seeing these Klingon armors, especially the helms, makes me even happier with the show.
  • Best bike-based Star Wars styled Halloween costume anything EVER.
  • This R/C Batmobile is BAD ASS. I still prefer the Tumbler, but hot damn, rotating turrets (for murderdeathkill DCEU Batman!) 24″ of pure powah.
  • He was answering more broadly about his willingness to return to Marvel for another film, not specifically a Black Widow film, but Taika Waititi noted he’d like to see a funny Black Widow. I don’t doubt he’d pull it off, one of those ‘she’s the straight face with lots of eye rolling and groaning at the incompetence of everyone else’ type projects… but I still just want my urgent spy thriller.
  • Speaking of, Olivia Munn has been cast in Hummingbird, which is, you know, that.
  • And here’s the opposite of Olivia Munn, Mads Mikkelsen in Polar. Also awesome. WANT!
  • I forgot to mention this after retweeting it on Twitter… because thats what the cool kids do… but Preacher has been greenlit for S03, which is great news.
  • Our review and discussion (and befuddlement at trying to map out the plotline after seeing it in the middle of the night) of Blade Runner 2049 is forthcoming on the podcast, but this was interesting: they considered making it a two part 4 hour film. There is a definite divide in the narrative, indeed each half begins with the eye, etc. I’m glad they took it the direction they did, though.
  • This is the stuff of superhero or paranormal or alien film prologues…
  • Finally, here’s a Stranger Things candle that I love highly.

Happy Halloween y’all! Enjoy your syringes and bath salts and Charleston Chews!

Whose Soul Is This – Robots Root 28 July 2017

Let me just quickly say that the latest episode of Preacher was devastating. I don’t recall if this Cassidy detail was in the comic, but it was beautiful and tragic and so well done. Gilgun is owning this show. Moving on…

Robot’s Root!

  • Disenchantment, a new animated series from Matt Groening, is coming… at some point… and will be excellent. Postmodern, adult fantasy. I’ll take it!
  • Suburbicon is George Clooney doing his best Coen Brothers impression, but I’m fine with that.
  • This posits that Villenueve is on the shortlist for the next Bond film. While I loved the speculative rumor about Nolan taking on a future version of the franchise, I’d be very interested in a Villenueve version as well.
  • Here’s that infamous suit, which you can, and surely should, own today!
  • The latest in Deadwood non-news: now the script is in, and is excellent, and HBO… just needs to… get all cast together, get a budget worked out… you know, little things.
  • Everything you wanted to know about Batman’s ‘tactical suit’ in JL… including floating armor plates that don’t do anything, and straps to nowhere! It’s not that I don’t like it. It has strengths, too. But still, some odd choices.
  • Spencer Wilding has been discovered working on Han Solo. WHAT DOES IT MEAN.
  • Apparently, the next Arrested Development season will be a whodonit about the murder of Lucille. What a great concept.
  • Still struggle with all the humanoid, smooth armored new Jaegers, but the promo from SDCC looks pretty OK.
  • This is NOT the publicity that WB wanted for JL… sort of like all the other publicity they didn’t want. I love all the Cesar Romero Joker images on Twitter this week…
  • Having flown all week, I’ve been thinking a fair amount about this boondoggle after SDCC, in which United claimed travelers couldn’t check comics, and blamed the TSA, which turned it back around on United again. Can you imagine how upset those congoers must have been? I can.
  • “She’s a robocop with a weird robo-walk with a weakness for being snuck up on by dudes with tasers!” Honest Trailer for GitS. I love it.

Its a Wrap – Robots Root 18 July 2017

The making-of teaser released for the Last Jedi the other day was really fun. Of course, my favorite moment was at the end…

Well that’s just, like, your opinion, man… it’s Robot’s Root!

  • This is EVERYTHING.
  • I continue to hold out hope for this project, for nostalgic, formative childhood reasons: James Wan may be out, but Robotech landed a new director, of Stephen King’s IT fame (fame is a strong word)…Andy Muschietti.

  • The ST: Discovery producers continue to fumble into their own Burmese Man Traps, metaphorically. How hard can this be?! Just say it’s the Pineverse. Or say it’s a new vision. Or come up with some sort of timeline mutation explanation. Or introduce more than one species of Klingon. I want to enjoy this pretty awesome design work without hearing them wind themselves up trying to rationalize to the ST superfans why the Klingons look this different (yes, they look different from production to production, but this is a different order of magnitude)… I mean, if I can gloss over the fact that this supposedly takes place closer to both the ST:TOS and Pike’s first appearance than the age of my CATS… I can overlook design changes that aren’t consistent with the continuity they are supposedly locked into. Ending with a preposition. But hey, let’s keep them honest, right.
  • Justice League continues to have viral buzz, but as usual, for all the wrong, surreal reasons. This time, Zack Snyder deleted all the JL material from his Twitter feed. WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN, they cried.
  • According to inferences made in the panel line-up for the con, Punisher may be in the Defenders. I mean, he SHOULD be in the Defenders. But anyway. That’s a thing.
  • Weapon H is the kind of hot mess that drove me away from comics in the 90s. I can’t even.
  • Thinking about the new Last Jedi posters… is it simply rad design work, or is their some meaning behind the eyes being cropped out of every shot?
  • Two excellent posters for the Revenant. Probably need to have SEEN the Revenant, but…  I did, and I love them. The tone is perfect.

Lastly, I want to note one thing that isn’t being talked about on Preacher: set design. I love most of the sets we’ve seen, and how evocative some of these environments have been, particularly with their use of color. Last night’s ep was impressing me for the huge long shelved wall of tchotchkes Jesse and Tulip had as the background at their dinner table. Amazing.

I Dreamt Music – Robots Root 5 July 2017

Sure, I posted this header because my man Deckard is demonstrating excellent taste in upholstery. But also, as of tomorrow, we only have to wait a nominal 3, I say 3, months until the new film’s release. That pleases me.

Thus and therefore, Robot’s Root!

  • If you watch Silicon Valley, and you should, one of the best parts is the opening sequence, which features a Sim City style narrative about the setting of the show. It’s changed from season to season (as the tech industry is literally SO volatile that companies come and go from prominence in between seasons) and this 7 minute video does an excellent breakdown, highlighting some cool easter eggs and references.
  • New Mutants: Rosario Dawson is out as Celia Reyes, and Alice Braga is in. I hope this is indicative of Dawson’s ongoing role in the Marvel Netflix universe of shows, as she’s 90% of their value.
  • Best X-Men: Dark Phoenix news thus far: Evan peters is confirmed to return as Quicksilver. It’s really all I need. More important than Jean Grey, in fact. Snap! Meanwhile, the buzz is that Magneto will be (shoehorned) into the Dark Phoenix storyline in a messianic style which means Acolytes and Genosha and everything that has bored me to tears about the X-Men comics of recent decades. So yay.
  • Patty Jenkins is apparently confirmed to direct WW2… which isn’t the foregone conclusion it SHOULD be… so that’s hopefully a true thing. Bonus GIF because Wonder Woman.
  • It’s early yet, but as an unapologetic True Detective fan, hearing that Mahershala Ali could join, and that a third season may still be moving forward are well-received bits of business.
  • What is this even: a six-part western anthology by the Coens… The Ballad of YES IM SOLD TAKE MAH MONEHS.
  • Here’s a relevant but not relevant diversion: new favorite brand-aware graffiti crime spree. I think it might be Torsten.
  • JAWS as viewed in an outdoor pool-based theater? NOPE.
  • I havent watched this yet, because I’m waiting for the new season of Preacher to end first, but when I do, I bet it’ll be spicy.
  • This is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. For today! Shoen, a kimono wedding dress line…
  • Nicolas Cage as every character in GoT because of course.
  • Discussion regarding the Spidey suit, and where it moves from practical to CGI, and how rarely it does…

And finally, because it exists: FELT TARDIGRADE.

Manilla Folder Time – Robots Root 17 June 28

Preacher S02 started this past weekend, but I won’t see it until a few nights from now, after settling down from the last two week’s of cons. But man, I’m stoked. STOKED.

I’m back from Portland and the Heroes and Villains Fanfest/Walker Stalker Con, but it will take a few days to decompress all that and talk about it. In the meantime, I present:

Robot’s Root!

•  In my mind, the biggest news of the weekend was about the Han Solo firing. First, it was that Kennedy didn’t like Lord and Miller’s choices. Then it was about improvisation. Then we learned, after a brief speculative period, that Ron Howard had stepped forward to complete the film. This late in the production, it raises questions. I thought this article offered some insight. I choose to be optimistic. I know the talk of ‘acting coaches’ is alarming, but this is often employed, not simply to bolster a performance, but to tweak it to a specific vision; when you are essentially doing an impression of a well known actor in a famous role, this could be expected, I’d wager.

• This may not be thrilling news for some, or most, but both Brad Pitt and David Fincher are confirmed for WWZ 2. Now, the original strayed far from the book, and I’d be interested to see what direction they take for the sequel, which I really liked, particularly seeing it at midnight in a coffin hotel in Singapore, which makes everything weirder. Meanwhile, Pitt has signed on opposite Rickie Lee Jones in an interesting project about a near-spectrum engineer heading into space to find his astronaut father, which I am 10% into.

• Here’s the best [Hot Toys] look at the Iron Man armor featured in Spidey. I’m of two minds. Make it three minds, for brand awareness. For one, I’m struggling as much with the silver +red/yellow motif nose as I was in Ultimate Iron Man, from a design logic standpoint. I can understand if the gravity of things have led Stark to focus on the tech and less on the ‘hot rod’-ain’t job. But why any red/yellow at all? Two, I want a rational explanation in the script for why he’s wearing this after supposedly dumping the gear after IM 3. Third, science! No, but here’s my thing: I was thinking about an armor post-Civil War. I imagined something black and tactical. I imagined Stark going purpose-built, not the way all of his gallery of disposable armors was in IM3, but a no-nonsense, complete weapon armor. Anyway, there’s that. Meanwhile, here’s Stark on the set of Infinity War wearing curious, deliberate cammo gear with orange striping and what looks like another chest reactor.

• I’m choosing, I mean REALLY choosing, to be optimistic about ST: Discovery. So. Here’s a photo of the proto-transporter and a diagram explaining the uniform delineation, the latter of which being a critical resource for arts. I can’t yet get over the choice to make this the Shatnerverse and not the Pineverse, and how this supposedly takes place AFTER Pike and a few years before Enterprise, but hey. You know I have that strange ability to ignore visual continuity. But I WANT it to be different, anyway.

• Great story of JCVD getting fired from Predator for all the awesomest reasons. Amazing.

• The word of Dazzler’s inclusion in the next X-Men brouhaha appears to have been confirmed, along with quite a bit of vitriol aimed at suggestions that Taylor Swift be cast. I was really on the fence about the 80s X-Men stuff and the setting in the 90’s for the next film. However, I saw some pretty amazing period cosplay this weekend at Fanfest that warmed me to the idea. Well, Izzy was Jubilee, but same point of reference.

• I remain skeptical of the non-dubious application of such a product: Dubious Product.

• I like the casting… well, 99% of that like is on a certain mad brother, but why, WHY, did they release that first image with Medusa’s plastic weird hair to sour everyone on this? Posters, thus.

• I haven’t been able to watch a Bayformers film past the first one, but the 3% hope I have for this Bumblebeee spinoff is the hint that he might have the Bug chassis. Maybe? I mean, guys, U GUISE, all you have to do is exactly what the cartoons did in adapting the toy design language, but dump the mysterious planor sections of gray ‘robot’in the transformed limbs, and just… do… THAT. Anyway, who knows.

Robotech is the first physical comic I’ve committed to in about 10 years. I love what Marco Turini dove into here, after following him on IG for a few years. Really looking forward to the series, and hope it works.

Hey Look Theres Jeff Goldblum – Robots Root 6 June 17

As if the Thor: Ragnarok trailer couldn’t get any better

Lo, tis Robot’s Root for 6 June 2017!

  • Charlie Heaton of Stranger Things up for Cannonball in New Mutants? I’ll take it. Meanwhile, Blu Hunt, a relative unknown, has been cast as Dani Moonstar. On the, uh, surface, she looks good to me. Acting? Ethnicity? Can’t say. Finally, Henry Zaga has been cast as Sunspot. Shrug!
  • Here’s a trailer for Preacher S02 I didn’t watch because blackout. Please, let me make it until 20 June…
  • I’ve seen at least 13 different clickbaity articles about the ‘leaked Punisher poster’… let me save you some time. It’s a skull. Sorted! Now, to hold breath until November…
  • So Millie Bobby Brown auditioned for the role of X-23… that’s interesting. I wish we learned that before recording our latest podcast on the subject. An interesting what if? comparison there…
  • John Wick 3 is GO!
  • Janelle Monae is on board for the Phllip P Dick anthology. That’s intriguing to me, as I love her deal, and I love that she wanted to be involved. I still don’t love anthologies, though.*
  • I don’t know if its true or parody that this ‘Paramount’s Dark Universe’ group shot was a composite (damn potochop!) but now I can’t stop staring at Russell Crowe’s hand. But man I still love most of this pic, especially bad as nails Sofia Boutella. When I first saw this pic last week, I cropped her out as pose reference for an upcoming art. I mean damn.
  • Earthling Cinema kills it, so to speak, once again with a review of Ex Machina. “AKA the Pollack Method”
  • Chris Hemsworth isn’t hurt about being left out of the last few films, right?
  • I’m no fan of Todd McFarlane or Spawn, but I love love love seeing the youthful iterations of later commercial properties. Close to my heart, of course.
  • The new Runaways series has been officially announced. I like Anka, but we’ll see how this new creative team, and direction, works in the context of the high standards of the past.
  • Finally, it sounds like the ST: Bridge Crew immersive VR game has stepped up to the promise of both the VR platform and the Star Trek gaming experience. I’m not in the market for more Playstation gear to languish unused in my living room, but I like what I’m reading.

Back to your work friend friending!

Ah Said No Peekin – Robots Root 30 May 2017

Last night we completed another session of the Robot-Kraken Podcast recordings for inclusion in the June episode. Special guests! Special liquors! Hot messes!

In the meantime, however, this is Robot’s Root for 30 May 2017:

  • I was talking with One Lung this morning (or typing) about films we’re looking forward to, beyond all the obvious marquee stuff coming out, and that led me back to trailers. So here, have some, for science:  Trailer 1: Baby Driver
  • Trailer 2: Logan Lucky. “ah said no PEEKIN!”
  • Trailer 3: Hitman’s Bodyguard
  • BONUS: Shimmer Lake on Netflix. IN!
  • This supposed brief on the new Silver and Black disaster-in-waiting Sony is cooking up for their Spider-Man Universe Without Marvel or Spider-Man or Something sounds sketchy. Like fanfic stuff.
  • Surprising precisely no one, SW VIII has been postponed while they violently rewrite the entire thing.
  • First look at Lockjaw from Inhumans: yep, giant bulldog. Missing the signature tuning fork and collar though, which is weird. So many weird choices on this project. I still haven’t recovered from the wig.
  • A little less than a month to go and we’ll have new Preacher. YASS.
  • In another (rather odd) example of studios remaking instead of building anew, Amazon just bought a series based on the film Hannah which (I haven’t seen, actually) I hear is based on every other young teen orphan assassin trope. Not that I don’t want to see the film. But I’d rather see original content greenlit.
  • The thicken plots… possibly… now they are admitting Joss Whedon has been quietly working on JL for awhile. This could be a sign that they knew and were planning to transition Snyder stepping down on a schedule, OR that he was already on board for script/shooting corrections. I do think it’s no coincidence that he was randomly announced as the writer/director of Batgirl this spring…
  • I’m half-way through the current glorious season of Silicon Valley, and I can’t conceive of the next season moving forward without TJ Miller. Dammit.
  • Really odd one here: Rosario Dawson is supposedly being courted for the role of Dr. Ceclia Reyes in the New Mutants film. It feels… fan speculationish… given that she’s already in the Marvel Universe (one of them) as a nurse… but hey, +1 always works for me.

And with that, I’m off to see if I can scrape some of this rum off of the inside of my cranial cavity…

Robots Root – 6 April 2017

Above, let’s take a moment to relish Keron Grant’s Gotham City Garage design as executed in this statue. The badass pose, the ink, the translucent bike farings… I mean… I look at this often for inspiration. Gorgeous.

On to Robot’s Root for 6 April 2017

Meanwhile, out there, these:

  • Trip out: One of Ridley Scott’s proposed endings for Alien involved Ripley being facepunched and then the xenomorph, via tentacle(?) using her com panel perfectly mimicking a human voice. I mean. I love it.
  • I know it’s not super cool to be buzzing about the Defenders right now, but that’s how the backlash works. This weird viral teaser involves the team looking wiped out in an elevator… there’s a URL that gets you into interesting territory involved, and it reveals the launch date for the series… but all i can focus on is Matt Murdock’s headpiece. I get it: no one else has a secret identity, but this is the Netflix equivalent of the old ‘spare FF costume’ thing in the 80s when Peter Parker, after ditching the symbiote costume at the Baxter Building (maybe? It’s hazy) left the building in a spare FF jumpsuit minus gloves and boots, and wearing a paper bag on his head. It was surreal. He couldn’t just leave the building in some of Johnny Storm’s spare clothes as Parker?? Like through the lobby? I remember thinking: TOO MUCH DRUG U GUISE. Anyway, there you go. No one would recognize Murdock’s suit I guess. Or rather, ask the basic questions. But whatever, still into it. See you in August.
  • Welp, Rainn Wilson has signed onto the new ST series as… Mudd… so that’s a thing that’s happening.
  • Uh, Marvel’s VP is stepping into it… and then, maybe 24 hours later, two ‘diversity’ titles got Hugos. Nice.
  • Justin Theroux and Tom Hardy supposedly in SW VIII works for me. Entirely works.
  • Give that Mouse laptop company from Japan some due credit: good ad agency. Number one good.
  • Um WHUT. But Yeah Preacher S02, can’t come soon enough.

Less Chimichangas for Tim Miller – 24 October 2016

Image
This one I initially discounted as rumor, but apparently the fallout stems from, aside from a general power struggle, the fact that Tim Miller wanted to do a stylized sequel, and Reynolds wanted to stick with the 4th wall lunacy of the first film.
via

In other news…

Image
ITEM: Very sad news this weekend: Steve Dillon passed away at age 54. Quite a shock. Makes me a bit nostalgic, and sad for his family certainly. TICKETS WAITING TO BE PUNCHED ABOVE US ALL, friends.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Season 2 of Jessica Jones will include all female directors as a mandate. As a rule, I think that’s pretty awesome.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: So many things over the weekend! This was announced officially later Friday afternoon, ending months of speculation and years of fantasy casting. People were talking about Glover as a young Han even before there was a Han Solo movie.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: I tend to ignore ‘science’ features that include a soundtrack and snippets of interviews with a single source. But I thought the ‘microburst’ concept was interesting, if nothing else. Weather pRn!
via

:::

Image
ITEM: This rad Lego nod to Rogue One is pretty layered in its coolness. It’s a great relief sculpture of K-2SO as it is, but then they framed it like an illustration and built Lego MARKERS. That’s nuts. I love it.

Image
And finally, I made another Lego mech… this time at the lego store in my neighborhood. You can rent time with their bins so I take my son there while my daughter is in ballet sometimes. Concepting/Search/Assembly time, about 35 minutes.
