Ep 38: San Francisco Comic Con, Rose City Comic Con, It, Logan Lucky and More
Kris McClanahan and Thom Chiaramonte

If you follow on iTunes, please subscribe and review us (anywhere between 5 and 5 stars would be great)

It’s been a few months, but we’re back with this episode from the depths of our underwater vault in the black seas of geekdom!

Kris and Thom give their review and thoughts on San Francisco Comic Con, Rose City Comic Con, Logan Lucky, IT, Inktober and a whole pile of other geeky goodness!

This episode comprises a few recordings made between September (live recordings each night of Rose City Comic Con from Portland, OR) through November.

ROBOT KRAKEN is a MONTHLY podcast by two indie artists, Kristopher McClanahan of Deeply Dapper and Thom Chiaramonte of the Third Rail Design Lab. We get together and talk about comics, movies, working the table at comic cons, life in this nerdy wonderland, and whatever mumblings from the deep we come across.

We Are All Flipping Down Jones, One Way or Another – Robots Root 12 September 2017

The news of the morning is that JJ Abrams is looking to be the selection to write and direct Star Wars IX. Good news to some, less so for others worried about the cyclical and nostalgic nature of Force Awakens, or who wanted a female director etc. I for one feel that this is at least a known, accomplished choice, not only in their resume but in the SW film world, and loved Force Awakens despite issues. So I’m in.

Rose City Comic Con was super fun, and the report on that will be forthcoming here on the site, though available on the Robot-Kraken podcast on itunes in the next few days…

Meanwhile, this is happening. It’s robot’s Root!

  • Ant-Man and Wasp are flipping SUVs in our old hood (flipping down Jones St). One Lung was passing by, and yelled for them to watch out for ‘dirty dishes and cheeseburger meat!’ No word on if it makes it into the film.
  • Here’s the incredibly labyrinthine and overwrought way in which Phasma escaped Starkiller Base, apparently. Guh.
  • Daniel Dae Kim replacing Ed Skrein in the Hellboy reboot is the BEST kind of fan-casting made real. I love it.
  • One never knows with these “news” items, as there must be as much propaganda and misinformation leaking as any actual accidental leak, but now ‘creative difference’ in the firing of Colin Trevorrow to ‘difficult’ with anecdotal reports of raging ego and editiorializing on set. I find these stories interesting only because of the let’s say translucency of the modern era: Oscar bait films love to show stories about famous filmmakers struggling to complete their projects amidst personal faults, often  ciphers for true stories or biographies accepted as behind the scenes fact where the press of the day did not have access to this information, or studios more carefully managed the image of the productions. Josh Trank’s reported meltdowns on FF follow the same archetypes. My sense is that Hollywood has always been rife with imploding egos and set drama, both in front of and behind the camera, but we hear about it now because of that spoiler/gossip penetration. Similarly, the lack of studio management of the image of these productions these days baffles me. Sure, we read about scripts in non-photo and unique ID code paper, extensive onset security, decoy sets to trick drones, etc, but aside from those efforts, sometimes I can’t fathom what they are thinking. For example, after Jared Leto’s antics being described in press junkets backfired, going from ‘edgy’ to ‘pathetic’ in the public consciousness, why on earth was Villaneuve quoted as ‘tearing up’ over how Leto wandered around Blade Runner in opaque contacts FFS. This DOES NOT HELP THE UPHILL BATTLE OF SELLING A MOVIE LIKE THIS.
  • At least good news came in the form of Patty Jenkins signing on to write and direct WW2. Smart move in the DC house, for the second time, overall.
  • Lastly, Len Wein passed away this weekend, which was somewhat melancholy news while tabling a comic convention.

More to come! I’m still decompressing and Kris is still driving…

Rose City Comic Con This Weekend, pLus Robots Root 6 September 2017

San Francisco Comic Con is done, and tomorrow we head to Portland for Rose City Comic Con. Hope to see some of you there! Photos from both shows will start rolling out starting next week…keep your eyes peeled for sneaky shots of Friend of TRDL Lung at the table…

Meanwhile, Robot’s Root for 6 September 2017!

  • Lung turned me onto this last week but I never posted it. The Honest Trailer for Face/Off is one of their best yet.
  • You might think, from these comments, that Inhumans is a technical and visionary opus. I’ve heard the contrary. I’m not sure at this point if I’m even going to watch it at all. Your mileage may vary.
  • 2.5 Hours of Blade Runner 2049 goodness? I CANT WAIT I TOLE YOU.
  • Preview roundup, genre edition: Damnation on Netflix; Tin Star on Amazon; Hostiles, a feature film (yay Wes Studi); Brawl in Cell Block Whichever, a feature film; Mindhunter, on Netflix.
  • The ships, and their names, for these new SW films are really nuts. Same things but bigger and also bigger, sometimes bigger. I will give the Supremacy this, though: it says they have a shipworks on board, which could help rationalize the scale and span in the massing, if it can build Destroyers, for example. Huh. Meanehile, Poe’s new X-Wing gets a turbo boost to get past big lasers. BIG LASERS!
  • And speaking of the Star Wars, Colin Trevorrow being out for SW VIII has been spurring on some interesting speculation, in front of and behind the curtain. Calls for a female director, calls for Rian Johnson again, given his apparently smooth sailing on Last Jedi, calls for LUCAS FFS, and on and on.
  • Finally in SW news, Mark Hamill’s comments about wanting to play his own evil twin (actually a cool idea) reference a plotline in the Extended Universe books about which I was not familiar. Thrawn stuff. I’m always down with things referencing that hand.
  • Whedon apparently rewrote enough of JL to get a writing credit. Meanwhile, looking at all these photos used in the Alex Ross style poster composite, I keep laughing at how high Aquaman looks, and how appropriate that is, in a meta sort of way.
  • “That guy’s wife” saved the Star Trek franchise. Nice, Shatner.
  • There is apparently some controversy among rigid hetero fanboys or whomever about this commercial. I loved it. Start to finish.
  • Here’s your ubiquitous bosslogic manips of Leo DiCaprio as a Joker. For science. I prefer L E T O!
  • John Cena in the running for Shazam?, this was all over the con floor at SFCC this weekend. I’m not convinced this is real. However, on Sunday it occurred to me who he COULD play well, given his enthusiasm, size, and charisma: Guy Gardner!

  • This Hellboy summary, recently leaked, is sufficiently general and I like what I hear. LUNDUN ENGULUND!
  • Finally, I leave you with Key & Peele’s Sexy Vampires. Cracked me up, a little. Not out loud. But inside.

Back to the packing and the fire dodging! See you maybe in Portland!

TRDL Convention Schedule 2017

Image

Now that I have the shows arranged, here are my convention appearances planned for 2017.

Note: WW Sacramento, Heroes and Villains Portland, and Rose City, will all be shows that Deeply Dapper and I will table together, so if you are aa Robot-Kraken Podcast fan, now’s your chance to see us in the flesh, prod us for cybernetics, ply us with rum, etc.

This is somewhat subject to change: we are waitlisted on a few shows, and there are a few others we are thinking about, based on how the June shows go. But for now, if you are on the West Coast, you have an opportunity to come visit, talk comics and standard nerd stuff, pick up some art books, prints, and original work, and possibly be featured on the Robot-Kraken Podcast convention feature. Hope to see you in California or Oregon this year!

Goggles With Which to Bat-See You With My Dear – 15 09 16

Image
Batman’s tactical suit, which was teased in all that BTS Justice league business in London, has been revealed, seen here brightened and contrast-adjusted. I think it could go a few different ways. I love white eyes or goggles on him, and I have no problem with a lightly armored Batsuit, when it has a PURPOSE, as this apparently does, leaving him in his gray onesie otherwise. It is, however, very Owl Man esque, and the angles of the lenses are odd. Now, I happen to think Owl Man’s look was amazing, but anyway. Hey! Maybe they are just Bat-welding-goggles!via

Image
Side note, speaking of odd costuming: I’ve complained about the current DCU Batman’s yellow piping on the bat symbol and so on, but this is the first time I’ve seen the cape… scalloped… that can’t be right? I mean, I use cape detail like that a lot, but not on Bats. Bats don’t have scalloped wings. What is this even. via

Meanwhile, somewhere in space:

Image
ITEM: ruh-roh, Star Trek: Discovery has been delayed. Maybe that’s a good thing? I dunno. So surreal how Paramount completely blew the 50th Anniversary window. They didn’t market ST Beyond (one of their best received films) and the Discovery series shouldn’t have been announced, it should have been DELIVERED, in time for this summer. Nothing makes sense anymore. via

:::

Image
ITEM: Ben Barnes has been cast in the Punisher series. Maybe as Bobby Saint? I’m not up on my Punisher, so I don’t even. via

:::

Image
ITEM: Truth lassoed! Also, thighs. via

:::

Image
ITEM: Apparently Joker has been confirmed as not being used in Justice League. What will they do with those hours of Leto performances they stockpiled? Harley solo (ish) film? via

:::

Image
ITEM: Kind of funny, but also shows how easy this sort of thing is to dummy up, which is worth considering when you get all those false spoilers. Deadpool + Spidey. I mean, CAPTAIN Deadpool. via

:::

Image
ITEM: This deeply surreal escalator and elevator safety video is worth earphones, a deep dive, and some blueberries while you go. Just, the whole tin, right down the hatch.

Image
Remember kids, vertical transportation is SRS BSNS!via

:::

Image
ITEM: After weeks of speculation and dot-connecting and fan-manips, Joe Manganiello has been confirmed as the villain Deathstroke, in the upcoming Batman film. At least we have a big bad that is Bats’ rival (and occasional victor, in the comics) physically and tactically. via

:::

Image
ITEM: Great article on how important Luke Cage (NETFLIX) is, not only to the Netflix-MCU, but supers live action as a whole. via

:::

Image
ITEM: Points to this guy for effort. It immediately put me into a one hour half-focused exercise in trouble-shooting his scheme and optimizing it for success. My version includes BigDogs(tm) however. via

:::

Image
ITEM: Love this one. WB apparently routinely, inadvertently, send takedowns to Youtube over their OWN content. Talk about censure run amok. via

:::

Image
ITEM: Sphero is finally coming out with their licensed Force Band, to allow you to push, pull, and direct, your BB-8. They also included fake Pokemon Go business, but whatever. It’s sold separately, which is awesome, for those of us who sunk $150US into our bots this past fall. I’d like to see more about what this can do, but I certainly like an alternative to just using the phone as a joystick. Admittedly, I’m sure it will require tandem links. via

:::

Image
ITEM: That black and white version of Fury Road? It’s now called black and CHROME, which makes me laugh, and it’s coming in December, so save those rubles. via

:::

Image
ITEM: Jackie Earl Haley has been tapped to play the big bad, or rather the somewhat diminutive bad, in Rodriguez’ Battle Angel Alita film. I still, despite my manga interests in my youth, have no real sense of this project. But I’m 100% minimum into ANY project with Haley as the villain. So far he completely owned both Preacher and Tick this summer. via

:::

Image
ITEM: Margot Robbie has (wisely) been given a first-look deal at WB, assumed to include a Harley solo film (solo-ish) which shows that WB/DC understand that, better or worse, the character, and her performance, were the greatest takeaways of the SS film. via

We are back from Rose City Comic Con. I’ll have a con report forthcoming, timed with the release of our post-con podcast, but I’ll need a few more days…

IVE OBTAINED THE CASE – 31 Aug 2016

Image
It’s all about ‘wootini!’ and also ‘I’ve obtained the case, comma, and now I’m running with it.’
Seriously though, as Lung said offline, quite a difference from how Paramount handled their fan film issues. Plus, check out all that new stuff! I want a black series K2SO… which is black. Blacker than black!

Plus…

Image
ITEM: I don’t find myself with a lot of board game time these days, unless it’s MINIONS MONOPOLY, or the like, but both of these look pretty good!

ITEM: Stranger Things Season Two sneak is out today.
As I tole Lung, …so easy once they made that title generator!
The creators have talked about mapping out multiple seasons, just waiting on green light for renewal from netflix. As it was their most popular series ever, it was a foregone conclusion, but man how cool is it that they already have the episode titles,AND that they are keeping with another perfectly sized season of 7 or 8 episodes. And that it’s coming soon, in 1984!

Image
ITEM: Old stuff, but have you seen the video for Turn Down For What? Because holy hell WTF.
https://vimeo.com/88415705

:::

Image
ITEM: This listicle of bad unused movie supers costumes is a bit off. Sure, that Nic Cage Superman kit was atrocious. But while the concept art for Darren Aronofsky’s Batman: Year One looks randomly victorian (and the premise of that version of the story is freakishly off model) I can easily see how some edits would make this a good look for a year one Bats. Take the weird 60’s driving coat out of it and make it a tactical jacket and military goggles and such and you’re there.

Image
Others include this concept art for the CW Flash which I kind of dig, especially the helmet…

Image
And the Alex Ross Spider-Man design for the Raimi version, which actually looks kind of interesting with the bulbous eyes and old school silver wrist launchers.

Eh, maybe I’m just forgiving of design experiments.
