Paupers Graves and Saber Waves – 14 Aug 2018

This Mondo poster is by Mark Aspinol. I’m not fond of how the ships are flying off of Kylo Ren’s shoulder, but there’s other compositional choices I really like: for example, the symbolic imagery of the figure placement (Kylo’s back, the fact that they are back to back as per the big scene in Snoke’s throne room) is rad, and it allows the glow of each lightsaber to shine on the opposing character, expressing their instability in the light/dark choice and the concept of balance. I loved the ships in Kylo Ren’s cloak’s negative space. I like that his lightsaber breaks the frame, which I feel expresses his surprise Act 2 choice… Anyway, fun with arts.

From the Shimmer:

  • By the end of S01, Hulu’s Runaways started to follow the beats of the comic, which is exciting. Of course, they haven’t dipped into the big gut-punch of the comic’s first series, but I don’t know yet if they will. That gives it some refreshing urgency. Anyway, S02 synopsis is out, and it looks like it’s diving into the titular on-the-run period we’ve been waiting for.
  • I don’t know what Tax Collector is going to be about (no one does) but I like Ayers overall, and I don’t mind Shia Lebouf the way others generally do. This was an intriguing image for me. I’m into it.
  • The other week I was saying I never really liked the Predator design, and of course there was pity and outrage. Anyway, not like I didn’t watch the movies. I’m a generational dudebro. But anyway, I remember even as a kid wondering how that mouth works. This article is pretty entertaining: no tongue? What the hell? How does it eat, let alone eat sushi
  • New Wes Anderson film is in production! What about? Don’t know, don’t care, take my money.
  • This is the first Venom image I’ve actually liked, in terms of the design. I like that he’s big, and the eyes and grin look better in profile (the eyes want to be farther apart like an animal to me, not straight ahead in the simian manner) and I like that the white sinewy veins are taking the place of the spider symbol. I said this on the podcast though: sometimes Brock’s head is in the head, and other times (like when Riot takes his head off) he’s down in the core of the torso like a mecha pilot. I wonder if this is just sloppiness, or f it’s by design, like he’s being shifted around in an egg sac to protect him. Late night, a couple of cocktails, and I was amused that it was like the same sort of mystery pilot jenga that puts Batman face down when he wants to shoot something in the Tumbler. HA. Meanwhile, Sony shoots itself in every foot it can find: now it is going for a PG-13 rating so they can better ‘integrate’ into the MCU if that ever becomes a possibility. GUH.
  • Ongoing highly speculative theories about what Disney will do in dismantling Fox are ongoing. Mostly about two key points: bringing X-Men and FF into the Marvel fold (let alone all those other properties ready to be strip-mined), and the status of the raunchy R-rated stuff. At least the ‘months of reshoots’ story seems to be hyperbole.
  • Josh Trank’s Fonzo: Al Capone by Tom Hardy who, when faced with perpetual criticism for his weird vocal choices, triple-downed and based Capone on Bugs Bunny with vocal fry. I’m actually into it. I hate his accent and slur as Eddie Brock, but I loved his Bane, loved his Peaky Blinders stuff, and I’m all for this. Capone DID have a weird nasally, highly regional accent. Hardy give precisely zero shits.
  • I don’t think anyone believes Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth really walked away from ST4… here’s hoping the producers do, so they get their money. I’m not saying any of these actors deserve or necessarily NEED huge salaries that have so outpaced the scale of their work, but I do think the studios are generally stupid about these negotiations. They went to stars of major franchise work and just when you expect the battle will be about them wanting even MORE money (especially Hemsworth)… the studio scales the budget back and asks for pay cuts in violation of their contracts. I get this is how it works, on both sides, fighting to modify contracts… but seriously.
  • On the Robot-Kraken Podcast we talked about how it felt like a missed opportunity to not let Goliath grow in the third act of Ant-Man and Wasp… apparently there was a scene planned… but it was a flashback. I agree, though, that would have been narratively redundant.
  • Shane Black is all for a Nice Guys sequel… I don’t feel it is necessary. It’s a perfect standalone film. But I’d also 100% endorse it if he kept the vibe. Their charisma was electric. I guess neon, given the time period. Lazy incandescent?

No Good to Me Dead – Robots Root 25 May 2018

Mangold… on board Boba Fett?!? I mean, look: I’m part of the generation of fans that irrationally LOVES Boba Fett, but not part of the generation of fans that loves all those clone business. But if they took the right approach, this could be a pretty innovative piece of the extended SW saga. I want a heist and hunt film, come on!

Meanwhile, these items:

  • Regina King leads a new cast for the Watchmen series on HBO, and while the interwebs seem upset that they aren’t just retelling the same story as the film (and book) I’m looking forward to a story set post-Manhattan in the same continuity. Optimism alert!
  • One of my favorite touches in Deadpool 2 was the inclusion of queer characters where it wasn’t a thing. It wasn’t NOT a thing, either. It was about as controversial as Negasonic moving from one hawt haircut to another, as it should be. More on that when we release the Robot-Kraken Podcast, but look, none of it matters, as far as the haters go, and it REALLY matters, as representation for others, so I’m down.
  • ZOMBIE ALERT!
  • Matt Groening’s Disenchantment. What do you think?
  • Predator = Iron Man 3 + Dark Knight
  • The music is a departure, but everything else is spot on. Preacher S03!
  • Nothing is confirmed until its confirmed, but supposedly non-Batman may be joining previous-Batman in Spidey 2
  • Thanks Comcast. Thanks again. And for SPORTS.
  • One half of this John Wick 3 news is acceptable.
  • OK no joke: the finale of Six Feet Under’s final moments still haunts me. It just wrecked me. Somehow the Simpsons parody STILL has an effect.

Reminder, the latest episode of Robot-Kraken is available now: Legion, Expanse, and more! Please do rate and review us on iTunes…

Kellys Got My Number – Robots Root 16 January 2018

Look, I haven’t seen ANY of the Ash vs. Evil Dead series, but this photo of a character called Kelly, played by Dana DeLorenzo, sold me.

Meanwhile, some Robot’s Root… as we prepare to prepare for Heroes and Villains Fanfest / Walker Stalker Con…

  • Surprising precisely no one, Krypton looks like garbage.
  • More Altered Carbon, this time a full trailer. I did not expect the man out of time situation.
  • Another day, another Director defection from Gambit. This, just as Fox released the schedule for the upcoming supers films in active development. It’s still pretty strange that Fox is putting Deadpool 2 within two weeks of Han Solo. Even if the negotiations for final contract on the merger/sale are going to take years, you’d think they’d already be moving these projects a bit farther apart…
  • Natalie Portman just hopped onto Pale Blue Dot, replacing Reese Witherspoon who remains producer. I love ‘affected-astronaut’ stories. They sort of remind me of the ‘haunted sailor’ thing from the 1700s-1800s…
  • Duncan Jones’ Mute hits Netflix next month, along with Altered Carbon. I’m never leaving the house. Except for when I leave the house.
  • It’s early yet, so I’ll be convinced when it’s officially greenlit, but the Black Widow film has been assigned a screenwriter, which is 100% more than they’ve done on this project so far. And, while I would prefer an espionage film similar in tone to Winter Soldier, it sounds like it might be a Lady Liberators situation.
  • I watched the entire thing with Maisie Williams on the show, and it was delightful.
  • They Were Never Here looks AAAAAMAZING
  • I missed the window on this, but be advised:
  • A Shane Black Avengers (60s version?) YES PLEASE.
  • More optimistic talk about the Deadwood film… which I’ll totally accept as fact at this point, because I NEED it.
  • I sold a few prints of Superman: Red Son this weekend, probably a little bit driven by this news
  • Ridley Scott’s The Terror series on AMC feels tailor-made for me. 1800s arctic naval suspense thriller with monster stalkery? YES.
  • These are amazing: Desktop dumpsters, sized for magazines and thereabouts. Ready for your graffiti skills. Or skillz, if you are young (or too old)… and while we’re at it, I also need a Vestaboard, THANKS.

We’re recovering from Heroes and Villains Fanfest/ Walker Stalker Con, but more to follow, including a show roundup…

Even the Five-Pronged Trident Cant Ruin This Poster – Robots Root 3 Nov 17

I like this poster art so much, it not only transfers a slightly unearned optimism for the quality of the film, but makes me want to read a comic like this.

Behold! An international robot’s root!

I took a pass at a random victim generator on twitter or some such, and sure enough, I’m the first to go. So I’m THAT guy, if we ever play RPGs together…

SPOILER ALERT: So, we’ve recorded a ton of stuff on Bladerunner for the podcast already, but here’s a great look at the way they pulled off the Rachel reveal. When we recorded, we didn’t know much about how they did it, and the IMDB notes that Sean Young was on set made it confusing, but she was a ‘mannerism advisor’… anyway, here’s the thing, even as the final product was pretty OK on the uncanny valley scale, I wouldn’t have minded the physical actress they used.

Here’s a great piece of art for Fifth Element’s Leelu. I’m blanking on the artist right now, but I’ll find it. I was struck because of how much I dislike the majority of Leelu fanart, including my own.

And here’s my current favorite fanart from bladerunner, courtesy of Albinoraven. Amazing.

For whatever reason, bosslogic manipped Scott Eastwood as a Wolverine recast. Don’t hate it.

This makes me nostalgic: the original art for the corner-box Iron Man of my youth!

Last one, kind of random. Or more random. Found this Minecraft Matchbox car at the stoe. It’s empty. There’s no mindcraft guy in it. It’s a cart.

And yet thats not the weirdest part. COLLECT THEM ALL. Different box art… same toy. What is even.

Adamantium is Forever – Robots Root 16 May 2017

Have you ever seen anything as glorious as the Logan black and white trailer? Not I, says the bot. Cannot Wait. Comes with the Blu-Ray…

Meanwhile, Robot’s Root for 16 May 2017, because stuff is going on!

  • These unusual promo pics from Return of the Jedi are actually pretty great. Especially Han LEANING INTO IT.
  • the full GLOW trailer is out for the Netflix series. I’m stoked. Even as 80s make me puke. Stoked puke. Puking while stoked!
  • I’m not always on board with Seth MacFarlane, but I loved Galaxyquest and I hold out some hope on this project.
  • I feel like maybe the cast outshines the show on this one, but we’ll give it a go. Ghosted. I remember reading the brief on this some months back and thinking it sounded like a fake show within a show in some other project.
  • Knowing full well that at least 33% of readership on this post hates Cars with fire, this was amusing to me simply because I’ve seen this guy’s articles before, and he really DOES have a Humunculus Theory.
  • I couldn’t even bring myself to watch the full trailer for Gifted yesterday, but if you did, and want the low-down on what mutants are included, what the connections are to film continuity, etc, then read on.
  • First look at Shane Black’s Predator designs… Predatoring about

That’s all for now. Back to cleaning your scabby bloody rusty claw parts.

Just a Flesh Wound – 25 April 2017

I didn’t watch the first bridging minifilm for Alien: Covenant, but I did watch this one. I think it’s relevant.

Meanwhile, in space, this Robot’s Root is happening…

  • Best comment ever, regarding that trident there. Yes, I know the 5 point weapon has been in the comics before. Your argument is invalid.
  • I’m stoked at the Robotech resurgence. And an artist I follow, Marco Turini, was tapped to handle art chores on the new comic by Brian Wood. What a cool team-up! My concern is that they will mimic the tone and style of the anime, rather than do a grittier take that suits their own styles. If left to their own devices it would look a lot more like what Paul Pope did with Batman 100. Turini has a detailed, inky thing going on.
  • These 16th c. redesign cosplays are OUT OF CONTROL

  • The highlight of Iron Fist continues to be Jessica Henwick, who I’ve tried to fantasy-cast as pretty much anyone and everyone on the podcast.
  • Great prohibition era photos, feeling right out of the Coen Brothers playbook… but you can tell, as you go through them, that they were staged, even at the time. Still cool.
  • Spoilers if you didn’t listen to our Robot Kraken podcast review of Powerless, or watch it your own self: no longer an option.
  • Is Once Upon a Time in Venice a good bad movie, a bad bad movie, or just the worst example of trailer editing in the history of the form? I want it to be good.
  • DC just announced a Teen Titans live-action series launch. Which is great for DC fans. However they are using it to launch a streaming service, showing they learned nothing from Paramount.
  • I love James Bond. Which is Kingsman, these days. Just look at it. LOOK AT IT.
  • I also didnt watch Split, but I did learn about the stunt ending, tying it to Unbreakable (sorry, common knowledge now) and saw the awesome film recap here from Earthling Cinema. Anyway, M. Knight Toleyou announced Glass, the third film, will bring them all together. I look forward to it.
  • When Zoe Saldana says she wants to be in Dune, LET HER.
  • Shane Black confirms Predator will use practical FX. Music to my ears. And by eyes. Or something.

That’s all for now! Wipe your eyeballs down and find your center.

A Cockpit Full of Nerf Herders – 21 Feb 2017

Image
First, long-awaited cast photo for Han Solo. Note his Solo hair. Good stuff!

Meanwhile…

1. And as soon as hopes were raised, they were crushed. Matt Reeves may be out. link!

2. Points for this R/C Batmobile having a smoking exhaust port. Reminds me of train model tech from the 50s… link!

3. The Shocker appears a bit underwhelming, but on the other hand, at least we have the recognizable webbing look to his yellow bits. So to speak. link!

Image
4. The Predator cast is interesting, to say the least. Good news about the R rating…link!

5. For all of you who look at this stuff every time it comes out and say ‘sure, sure, but the robot overlords are going to be totally cool, bro, totally chill…’ I have news for you. link!

6. I have been doing my best to stay away from SW VIII rumors. But I fell into this one accidentally, and I’m totally fine with it. link!

7. Interesting and welcome series to be greenlit, for sure, especially during difficult cultural times here in the US, but also, if nothing else, more royalties for Jock I hope! link!

8. Lastly, I love my little Sphero BB-8, but I want at much autonomy as possible. Mine, thanks to an update, can at least go patrol on his own. But this long awaited large version has a ‘follow me’ feature which is almost worth the $200 for the thing. link!

Come With Me If You Want to Save the Franchise – 170126

Image
So, what do you think? Tim Miller on Terminator? Any chance of bailing this ship out? We talk about this one on the podcast in February… link!

Meanwhile, this:

– Look, I gave up on Gotham a long time ago. It was never great, but at least had some atmospheric style. It went from soapy cheese to a garbage fire in record time. That said, I will give them this and only this: I’ve been pining for someone to do the Joker thing from the New 52 where his face has been cut off and then haphazardly sewn back on. It’s so unnervingly icky (and infected, presumably)… so, at least they tried it. link!

– From now on, as far as cosplay goes, I will accept NO LESS than a full scale ED-209. link!

– Thomas Jane in Predator? Before seeing Expanse I’d have been against it. Now… link!

– Neill Blomkamp is not encouraging. link!

– I’ve been using these as desktop screens of late: focus on the retro-future GUI in Rogue One: link!

– GIJoe + Transformers… would you have been in? I would not have been in. I would have been more out than I already am. link!

– So, uh, according to this, DC/WB will give the obscure antihero villain of their obscure supers film his OWN film… yet still can’t figure out how to make the DC pantheon work? link!

– I liked the admittedly uneven Amazon Tick pilot… interesting to imagine Warburton back in the costume, though. link!

Shes a Good Secretary – 3 November 2016

Image
ITEM: This new trailer is really good. It lays out the structure of the film and the nature of the Amazonians and their relationship, at least somewhat, to the outside world, and established WW’s conflict with both the world and her own people. Also more amazing up and over leg kicks and knee scrapers and sword swipeys and that great bullet deflection in the alley and Pam doing her kung fu and…Image
well, of course, for me the highlight was this shot of the villain. SYMBOLISM!
via

Meanwhile…

Image
ITEM: I think it’s positively criminal that it’s taken this long for Talia Al Ghul to appear in some sort of live action continuity. I’m not discounting Marion Cotillard’s Miranda… that was a great element to the story, but I mean the Talia from the comics, a trained fighter, eventual mother of Damian Wayne…
via

:::

Image
ITEM: I sure like the idea that we can go for smaller films after Infinity Tole. I don’t know that that’s exactly what he means, but I do believe the group films can stand to not be global extinction events every time.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Christian reviewer warns Doctor Strange is, like Dungeons & Dragons, a gateway to satanism. I love it. IM THERE! Monday night in fact.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: I don’t know the book series, but I liked some of what I saw. Supposedly it’s just a delay based on the post-production schedule, but hopefully that’s ALL it is.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: I’m pre-sold, but still!
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Lung turned me onto this one. Simply brilliant. Haw did it take this long?? Reminds me of my old Nixon watch. But rad.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Titanfall 2 is another game I bought on concept alone, even though I don’t have time to play generally. I haven’t unwrapped it. But they added single player story mode to mech combat both in and out of the mech, AND it’s now on PS4 so I had to. This concept art spread is delightful.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: I may or may not have shuttered the bike news for TLTC these days, but check this out:
via

:::

Image
ITEM: This.
Predator…”plunks the deadly alien hunter, who audiences have seen fight in jungles, concrete jungles, frozen wastelands and alien planets, in the harsh environment of … suburbia.”
Also, as if the film needed the extra juice, Olivia Munn was cast as a ‘scientist’. That’s why I show her in glasses, you see.
via

Image
Also, speaking of the MUNN EFFECT, I was also pre-sold on Office Party, as we talked about when the first trailer came out, but since I laugh EVERY TIME Vance plummets to his probable death, I take it that’s a good sign that ALL THE REST OF THE AWESOME is good. Yet, the best part is once again Kate McKinnon.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: David Leitch is a rumored replacement for Tim Miller on Deadpool. I love John Wick. It’s interesting though, that it’s equally hard to envision his style applied to Deadpool farce as it was Tim Miller going ‘stylized’ and abandoning the fun parts. Dunno. This article Lung sent me, about Junkie XL leaving the project in solidarity, which I can respect if nothing else.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Lastly, I love the concept of an FPS maker FINALLY having the cojones to put a no-respawn mode into one of these games. THAT’s a challenge.
via

Birthday Buggas and Other Things – 27 October 2016

Image
Because, you know, I have nothing else to do, I decided to start doing Copic-based Birthday Buggas for friends who have birthdays upcoming. This was done for talented artist Mel Milton, a swell guy. You can see his stuff here.

In other news…

Image
ITEM: Here’s a nice concise history of Halloween has changed as a cultural holiday in the US. I love all that stuff from the teens and twenties and thirties and such. Back when the scarecrows were human corpses half the time, I figure.
via

:::

Image
EDIT: That one time Stephen King wrote a children’s book… sort of…
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Every time Shane Black talks about Predator, I get more and more optimistic.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: This excellent Oily Moss poster design was unused because they didn’t have the license to use the billing block under the title, which is the compositional core of this layout. What a shame. It’s so good.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: A brief history of all the Knight Rider reboots you never watched.
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Surprising precisely no one, Mexico City is moving forward with a Day of the Dead parade since it looked so awesome in Spectre. Granted, calling for a parade and actually getting something like what we saw in the film are two different things…
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Great news in concept: Titanfall II will decidedly NOT require a Season Pass or additional paid downloaded content after you buy the main game, which is satisfying to players like me who find those offensive moves by the game developers. I’m really looking forward to this, now that it will have a single player mode AND be available on the PS4…
via

:::

Image
ITEM: Bryan Fuller has agreed to step back from ST: Discovery, instead putting together a dream team of his previous collaborators to help manage the day to day production of the series. This was driven apparently by his schedule burden rather than general displeasure by the studio, though they aren’t pleased that the main character has not yet been cast…
via

Image
Meanwhile, Variety has some interesting ideas about either Adam Scott or Kelsey Grammar…
via

:::

ITEM: JJ Abrams and co have confirmed that his upcoming, and well cast, God Particle, is connected to the Cloverfield universe. I like this. A LOT.
via

Speaking of Cloverfield, I just noticed something:

Image

=

Image

:::

Image
ITEM: Bad news: Toy Story 4 is delayed a year. Good news: Incredibles 2 has been brought earlier a year. So yay for that! I love the Fantastic Four…
via

:::

Image
ITEM: The more I see of Old Man Logan, the more I like it. He looks awesome all haggard and bearded and scarred and rad. More than his usual look. For me, anyway.
via

:::

Image
And thus, it’s THIS kind of day. I’m fine with it.
