Thats Not Silly String – Robots Root 22 May 2018

The new West Coast Avengers is everything I want in a supers comic today. I’m delighted. Also one of my favorite artists currently working, and a great writer. Optimistic!

Also, for science:

  • Well thats great. They can RUN now, jump through holes in obstructions, and get back on their feet. Its cute that they aren’t admitting these are all prototype work for future cybersoldiers, and oh, by the way, I’ll be in my quite penetrable bunker.
  • I first heard the term “tank paratrooper” in the gag final punchline of a first season Ren & Stimpy. It’s even better in the real…
  • Here’s a cool video about the costume design on Shape of Water and others.
  • I had enough trouble as a kid dealing with the New Gods (as much as I adore Kirby now) so Eternals were WAY off the back for me. But hey, good luck! I’m on board if they do it right…
  • I don’t know if its because I’m traveling, or because I dislike the excessive abuse of the service animals system, but this struck me funny. I liked it.
  • Lung recently informed me he wasn’t a fan of Morena Baccarin because she has, to him, mean eyes. I’m usually focused on her lips and other bits, but anyway, that’s all neither here nor there because I’d be fully supportive of her playing Catwoman in that Gotham City Sirens film…
  • Here’s Bandai’s armored cats series, which, had they been available when I was in Japan, I’d have bought out like the whole supply.
  • Everyone needs a brutalist garden gnome, I says.
  • Tiny Superman. I’m jealous I didn’t think of it.
  • First, the new She-Ra is teased and it looks a bit stylized, so people got grumpy. Then the new Thundercats was revealed and it’s chibi so the all-srs fans freaked out. I can’t believe it. I mean, srsly. It looks great. CALM down. I actually enjoyed that behind-the-scenes featurette. Not the topknot tho.
  • best news of my day, tho? BEST news? Amazon picked up The Expanse. FFS that’s a relief u guise.
  • Courtesy of Lung, this custom operable Lego Tron Light Cycle display is dope. My favorite part is the little slab of light behind the cycle.

Finally, I leave you with the trailer to the Happytime Murders, which is proving to be as batshit crazy as I’d hoped!

Doug Jones is a National Treasure – Robots Root 5 March 2018

Not that this was necessarily the BEST choice (I’ve long given up on what’s right or wrong in these award shows) but what an interesting and cool surprise that Shape of Water took Best Picture and Best Director! A bit of nerd broke through…

Meanwhile, this:

  • What a random poster. Photoshop is sometimes your friend! Sometimes… not. So much dodgy dirt flying around them. HA!
  • Cheetah miiiiiiiiiiight be played by… Kristin Wiig? She can do anything. But SHOULD she?
  • April 22 can’t come soon enough!
  • Prospect looks really cool and retro styled for a sci fi horror project or whatever it is.
  • Cloak and Dagger has a new trailer… looks better than I expected, though still not my bag, maybe.
  • Here’s a Spotify playlist James Gunn put together as shooting music for the first film. Very interesting choices.
  • Here’s some peak Cage, looks like…
  • Looks like Flash has directors signed on officially. That’s a good step forward. Or hyperstep. Something.
  • All this talk about Captain Marvel being an action comedy… my first blush was that they are trying to apply the GoG/Ant-Man/Ragnorok concept to projects that don’t want it… but then again, the emphasis on her being ‘a sassy smartass’ suggest to me more that they wrote her to give zero fucks, which is something I could get behind.
  • “Set during the Italian Shirt Shortage…” Honest Trailers honest trailers about. In an honest trailery way.
  • Good Cthulu, Maya Thurman-Hawke looks like Uma Thurman. Soon she’ll be looking like Uma Thurman in the scary 80s.
  • That one time Schwartzenegger insisted they are preparing to film T6. Oh, I mean, every time.

OK, thanks for reading, my 33% Nation of Fish Banging!

Dinner is Served and it is Star Wars Forever – Robots Root 11 Nov 2017

This promo art for Deadpool slayed me utterly. I admit I was looking for grenades in the bird, and the perspective is a bit wonky up front, but the whole thing is a magical gem.

Meanwhile, so much Root in so little time!

  • Great news for Bossk lovers like me who have grand fantasies about finding time to play Star Wars: Battlefront II: BOSSK!!!!
  • As we watch Blade Runner fail to make its money back, as it was never expected to do (it is an 11/10 I’m telling you.) consider the previous ‘failure’ in cyberpunk adaptation/continuation: Ghost in the Shell. Mr. Oshii notes once again he approves of Scarjo, and so do I. So there.
  • Nacho Vigalondo is planning to bring Comeback to film, which is super fun and I’m down with it. Time travel rocks, as does running from the bad guys. I’m so envious of the concept for that title.
  • Hey, speaking of Star Wars, you mayyyyyyyyy have heard that Rian Johnson is doing a new trilogy, featuring different characters than the whole Skywalker situation. Just, you know, a little bon mot dropped into an investor update at Disney. I’m stoked! So much room for stories in this universe, and I love his vision, as far as I can tell, anyway. Yes!
  • By the way, you’ll be able to see those new films once they leave the theater, along with the current stuff, one way or another, on a new (and anticipated) Disney streaming service, including a fresh live action Star Wars something something, AND both current Marvel Netflix series AND a fresh one to be announced! Welp, they’ve got MY money.
  • Man, Shape of Water looks bonkers good. Can’t wait!
  • This isn’t the first time I’ve thought about zombies/vampires/whatever trying to exist after the epidemic is cured. I was dancing around a concept for that after seeing Shaun of the Dead… but this short film is wonderful.
  • Universal’s weird Monster Movie shared universe is now officially ‘on hold’… thats kind of a drag, to be honest. I know Universal made WB seem organized in terms of universe planning, but if Tom Cruise can’t keep a franchise, what can you do. I was kind of stoked by that extended cast they so beautifully photographed, as they are wont to do.
  • As if Black Panther didn’t already look amazing, Chadwick Bozeman dropped some anthropological science that made my mind reel. It’s so obvious, after you read it, but damn. So good.
  • Yay! SF in SF! Yay! Not that I’m biased. How could I be? I’m tolly bridge and tunnel now.
  • One Lung sent me this link to wake up to, and it made my very difficult day. I mean, it’s not over. But now I just want to watch this movie.
  • Speaking of the above hero image, this whole thing with Deadpool taking over Good Housekeeping is surreal. It’s not even bad advice.

By now your turkey’s torso should resemble “middle-of-the-movie” Lieutenant Dan,”

PRAY TO ME! – Robots Root 21 July 2017

I’m running out of space on my neck for all the Mondo poster recreation tattoos I need to do.

Robot’s Root!

  • To hell with the Blu-Ray. I don’t do the medias! But give me that ARM. This is how it starts… at least at one point in one of the timelines…
  • The Shape of Water looks like a whimsical cross between Del Toto’s Hellboy work (I mean, Abe Sapien, COME ON) and some sort of Coen Brothers fever dream.
  • This Rick and Morty S03 trailer requires a psych evaluation before viewing.
  • I am, unfortunately, a product of the target market.
  • Unlocked is my kind of jam! However, this oversharing trailer is not.
  • NIGHTMARE FUEL for nightmares that nightmares themselves have.
  • Continuing my theme of being optimistic about ST: Discovery, I love this retro tech. LOVE IOT. The costuming and design work for the Klingons is excellent.
  • Walter Goggins in an undisclosed role in Ant-Man and Wasp? I’m so in… I’m like OVER IN.
  • I know it’s profound and everything… but just look at how gorgeous they are.
  • I lasted three hot minutes in my attempt to not watch the second Kingsman 2 trailer… man I cannot WAIT.
  • Star Wars, but with Owen Wilson’s ‘WOW’ as the light saber sound FX. Brilliant and mesmerizing.
  • The weirdest things from these SDCC views of the Justice League costumes: the fact that the mannequins are shaped, posed, and detailed about 3% as well as the Hot Toys stuff, and that Flash’s hodgepodge is held together with arbitrary flex cabling.
  • This move to shove Shazam out the door before Marvel’s Captain Marvel film is both a little bit ballsy and also pure DC/WB at this point. No script, just an awkward live statement in a Kevin Smith interview.
  • Best ad for GOG2 Blu-Ray ever. EVER.
  • This Defenders promo is composited strangely, hampered by misplaced nostalgia and awkward narration by Stan Lee that doesn’t fit the tone of the Netflix shows… but the core concept of damaged, human heroes IS a Stan Lee base concept, and we DO get a shot of the Punisher, admittedly with a bad haircut.
  • Inhumans is getting worse instead of better. I’m struggling to be optimistic.
  • A recurring theme with the non-Marvel supers films that always bothers me: scheduling them, attaching creators, generating hype… all before a script. Sure, a number of the Marvel films had poor or missing shooting scripts, but especially early on, and they weren’t presented as empty tins with zoomy labels like this. Here we have the Venom people talking about what they plan to do, not about a script in place. That’s just fundamentally wrong.

  • Best Batman Black and White statue ever, courtesy of Becky Clooney, who first got to see it in people’s snaps from the con.
  • And here’s something interesting: Doctor Doom solo film, developed by Crawley and involving Dan Stevens? WOW.

Lastly, Kris and I began our second annual weekly-ish Game of Toles commentary last night, and it’s available today. I’ll post a formal thing about it later tonight, but here’s the itunes link: http://bit.ly/RoboApple
